Probably nothing to worry about i hope.DD is 14 and all her friends have started their periods. She has developed elsewhere and seems less hormonal than she was a couple of years ago.I have reassurred her that her period will prob. start in the next couple of years ?? I shouldn`t be concerned should i ?

I just googled for you and it said they usually start between 10 and 14 with the average age being 12 ( - a year younger than when I was a teenager). Anyway, so your dd is still within the normal range. I wouldn't imagine a doctor would be concerned yet.

I wouldn't woory, and unless it's changed they used to say no need for a GP until they're at least 16. I was 16.5 when I started my periods, yet it menat nothing bad.... Mum always said I might not have kids but I conceived each of my three in six weeks LOL!

Yorkshirelass is correct - Robert Winston did a docu a few years back and stated that a female body needs to be about 7 stone in order to carry & birth a baby.

I started quite late, 15, but only weighed 4 stone when I began secondary education, so no surprise really.

It is awful being the last of a bunch of girls to reach 'womanhood'. I didn't have boobs either and I was teased a lot.

However, I've since worked at the boat show wearing a bikini - and you know what those gals look like! (Why didn't I put that on the 'worse jobs' thread?)

I'm tall - 5'10" - and fairly solid but didn't start till I was 14.5 I was already 5'9" and plenty more than 7 stone - in fact I was about 8 stone at 12 and 5'2".

I literally conceived first time with both of mine - I've been told that some forms of cancer are rarer if you start your periods later - don't know if that's true.

Several of my friends were about the same age as me - one skinny one didn't start till 16.

Please don't worry

Dd is 14 (August) and she has recently had her first period. BTW she's not slim.

Mooshy, all her freinds might not have started, not unknown to pretend to keep up with pals, so DD might not be the only one.

Thanks everyone.
Shes about 7 1/2 stone i think.
I wont worry now for at least another 18 months. She was on anti epileptic med. for years and i suppose i ought to check that hasn`t interferred with anything.
Have been telling all my friends what a lovely and delightful teenager i have -does that mean she will change into the horror everyone keeps telling me to expect when periods do start.Shes very emotional now i suppose-but in a nice way really .

I think that 7 stone thing must be a minimum weight for menstruation, rather than a trigger point iyswim.
My dd1 is 11, tall and muscly, certainly not skinny. She must weigh over 7 stone, but is barely beginning to develop -- the merest beginnings of boobs and no pubic hair. I can't see her starting her periods for a good year or two. Whereas her best friend who is a similar height and build needed a bra from the beginning of Y6 and started her periods at 10.5.

I think genetic influence is an important factor.

I only started when nearly 17. I have not heard the 7 stone thing before, but that would be about right for me, I was very little and would have reached 7 stone around that age.

i started at 10

Don't think 7 stone can be a minimum, as I didn't get to that till after I'd had DS! I started at 14, DD at 11 - she's much the same build as me - or rather as I WAS - sadly I'm now rather plumper!

mine was 12th birthday, DS1 who is very thin was around 14/15 and DS2 was 13. Think they say dont be concerned until reach 16 or so then maybe speak to gp..but I could be imagining that.

My mum started at 9, but she was also wearing a bra and had pubic hair at that age too.

I was much later at 15, i started wearing a bra and gettiing hair at about 14.

I read recently that menstruation usually occors a little while after the hair and boobs.

I was 14 and a few months. My mum was about 12. Not sure when my sister's periods started.

All three of us were thin - I'm not sure if my mum has ever weighed as much as 7 stone (apaer from when pregnant)

apparently once your periods start, you only grow another inch or so...

I was 14. My sister was 17.

I thought 17 was considered normal range, too.

Dd started the day before her 13th birthday, but I know that many of her friends - some are 14 - haven't started yet.

Interesting what you say Rummum about not growing much after periods start. Fortunately dd is already taller than me!

My beautiful DD has the figure of a model and stands at 5ft 4". She is 11 and started at 10 poor baby was not ready to grow up. It sometimes makes me feel so sad but then I remind myself she was 11wks premature and I feel so overwhelmingly grateful to have such a strong and healthy child. Yes and I have to REMIND myself that despite all the physical attributes she is only a child. Its hard.
