Financial support for young adults with SEN

This online petition has been brought to my attention: //www.change.org/p/banks-across-the-uk-recognise-the-need-for-adapted-accounts

Very important for parents/carers of those with SEN, severe mental health problems (and also those with Dementia/Alzheimer's)

Please sign and share to facilitate financial management for those that need it, making our banks more inclusive and accessible and therefore giving people greater independence

Quoting from the petition:
"[It aims] to make British banks aware of the serious need for adapted bank accounts, particularly for those who suffer from conditions which affect their social interaction, comprehension, and mental capacity.

It is often the case that someone who has Special Educational Needs, for example, either cannot fully understand the ways in which a bank account operates or cannot control their finances in a safe manner. This is sometimes also the case for elderly people who cannot manage their accounts...and are susceptible to fraudsters. Although the option of Joint Accounts exists, this negates the argument that this person is an adult who possesses and controls their own money. If we had the option of an adapted bank account for those that want it, this would help ensure financial safety and independence.

An adapted bank account would:

  • Allow the Account Holder to have a special welcome session when they open their account, with a trained Advisor. This would give the Account Holder a forum to discuss queries and concerns.

  • Allow the Account Holder to nominate a chosen Carer, with access to the money in the account, to help manage finances.

  • Allow the account holder to nominate an Appointed Account Auditor, who would be able to see all account activity, but would not be able to withdraw any money. This would ensure the financial safety of the Account Holder.

  • Have instructions, terms and conditions written in an 'easy read' format, with symbols/pictures accompanying the text. There would be detailed instructions particularly regarding the use of Credit/Debit Cards, interest rates, overdrafts, and online banking.

Please, if you agree with the need for these accounts, sign and share the petition so that it can get as much recognition as possible. If enough interest and support is shown, I will pitch the idea of adapted accounts to banks across the UK."

(NB I originally posted this in the SEN recommendations chat, where it was suggested that this would be better off somewhere with more traffic)
