My younger sister started secondry school last september (she's now in year 8) and she has been bringing home some ridiculous homework, the worst one was "paint a sheet of paper blue" and then a few weeks ago she brought home something saying that her french homework was to "look for something french on the internet and print it out" the teacher told them that a picture of the eeifel tower would do...is this normal??

might the painting be relevant to shade and tone perhaps i know this cos my son is yr 8 also and had to do similar homework but it was to do with shade and tone.
Someimes my ds has to look for work from a specific artist and has to print out but it is part of amuch larger project usually.
If your parent are at all concerned about homework content they should contact the school we are lucky as we have simplyclick messaging system so answers to specific queries are quite easy to obtain.

My kids' homework (yrs 7 & 8)is very erratic in quantity and content even though the school is very successful in terms of % of children gaining 5 or more A*-C GCSEs. Apparently it all changes in yr 9 when they start to focus on ks3 SATs and then move on to studying for GCSEs.

I suppose if I'm honest I'm pleased that they still have time for play and other activities in the evenings - all work & no play makes Jack a dull boy.

I set some quite odd homeworks but they are well thought out, the other week my year sevens were star gazing. But if I set an odd homework I do send home an explanatory note.

At DD's previous school several parents were complaining that the girls weren't getting homework set, so the school told the teachers that if they didn't set homework they had to write the reason why & sign in every girl's homework planner - that led to some very superficial assignments - mostly of the 'print something off the internet' variety. It's one reason why DD is doing 6th form elsewhere.
