Do you know anyone whose holiday job has led to a permanent one?

A friend of mine has a son of 18 who is trying to decide which kind of holiday job he should get as he wants something that will lead to a permanent job eventually. He is thinking about getting into retail. Is there anyone you know who has done this and what results did they get?

my DD worked at Boots the chemist one christmas - worked her socks off, 12 hour shifts etc stacking shelves.

When she applied to another branch for a regular part time position (she's still in college), she got the job, now works every weekend and also works ad hoc shifts in the summer when not in college. Reasonable money too.

A friends daughter worked in Lush part time at 16. She did it all throughout uni, getting promoted as she went.

Upon graduation she moved to Hong Kong to work in the regional head office there.

Has an excellent career ahead of her now, all on a whim from a school time Saturday job.

Mine did, but this was nearly 10 years ago . It was with Boots and I ended up staying there 3 years, would have been longer if I hadn't moved 400 miles away.

Dd started a christmas supermarket job at 18 she is still there she is at uni she works 12 hrs and overtime she also took a weeks work experience related to her degree they now give her freelance work as and when

Me! I started working at a cinema the summer before starting uni, ended up staying there for 8 years! Best decision I ever made!

Me! I worked as a dental nurse in weekends and holidays from age 15. Am now a dentist. Not at the same place though.

Mothercare went for a sunmer job and stayed three years.

I had a summer job working for Tesco and was offered management training two months in. But i turned it down in favour of going to college.

Two years later i was offered a job by the company i'd done my college work experience for, accepted it and have never looked back!

Yes, a few over the years - all retail.

Lot of other people whose holidays jobs have been in things like play schemes / Outdoor Ed Centres / holiday camps, etc., which have helped in applications for things like teaching - so not directly but 'adding something to the CV' type jobs.

Lots of retail managers started out as temps or student jobs

Some retailers also now have graduate schemes to either accelerate graduates to management positions or into head office roles -internal applicants tend to do better through the interview process

If looking at retail I would always advise going into food rather than non food as the jobs are much more secure and the sheer volume of stores makes it much easier for career progression

I have a friend who's kid works at waitrose

My niece did. High street clothing chain - Saturday job to uni holidays to full-time job which she did for about a year before moving to a managerial scheme post with a very well known chain.

Sort of, I worked for Marks and Spencer one Christmas after finishing my degree, they offered me a place in their grad scheme. I turned it down as I'd had a PhD offer for the following year by then but I'd have been interested otherwise, seemed like a good company.
