Which mobile phone does your son/daughter have?

As the title says, which mobile phone does your son/daughter have? Trying to get something reasonably current, so she'll be happy to use it for a year or two. Can you recommend any good contracts, or is it best PAYG?

At the moment my daughter has my husband's old one on PAYG and for the first time she has actually asked for something more modern. She says her friends have Samsung or HTC but they've had them a while, so not sure if they would go for something else if they had something more updated. She says none of her friends have Blackberrys, so not sure if their not fashionable here or something perhaps the older ones like.

DD is 13 and has a Samsung Galaxy Y on a £5 per month contract with talktalk.

However, I would add that after the initial novelty wore off she doesn't really use it very much and only uses a tiny fraction of her text/call time allowance.

Within her friendship group they tend to chat via Kik (instant messaging type app) on their ipod touches/Kindles etc or via Facetime/messaging on ipods/ipads.

Both mine (15 and 11) have recently got Samsung Galaxy S3 Minis - not the latest model of Samsung, but a good mid-price Android that runs up-to-date software and has a good camera etc. I bought them sim-free on Amazon and they have giffgaff and Tesco sims, which works out cheaper than a free phone on contract for their amounts of usage, but you might find a good contract deal if you shop around.

DD(16) has an Iphone 4s on a contract. I think it is about £20 a month. I don't think Blackberries are very popular any more.

ds (16) has an iphone 4s, its on giffgaff, we brought it 2nd hand from smartfonestore.co.uk, he has had contract phones in the past but kept running up huge bill. giffgaff is £10 per month and he gets 500 minutes, 1gb internet and unlimited texts.

ds(11) has a nokia lumia fab little phone and he's happy with it, has some xbox thing he downloaded. also on giffgaff, was brought on a Tesco misprice thing and cost £150 should have been £400! unfortunately it fell out of his pocket riding from school and the corner of the screen is smashed. He wants a blackberry curve, but im trying to persuade him to go for an android phone.

My DD (15) has a blackberry and moans all time because all her friends have got rid of theirs so we are changing it for something else - she likes look of Nokia Lumia or Samsung Galaxy S3 mini (like DD 17) I'm looking for a good contract for her under £15 as can't afford more than that. DS (18) & DD(14) both have cheap phones with a £5 rolling contract from virgin which suits them as they mainly text -no data allowance but phones have wifi.

One of mine has Iphone and one has a Blackberry. Both happy with. Bought phones or they are our old ones and get a capped Blackberry Sim with unlimited texts. They seem happy. If they want top of the range then they can get a job or get it for their birthday/Xmas.

20yr old has a rather battered iPhone 4

17 and 14yr olds have galaxy y.

Both on monthly sim deals with the important unlimited texts. (eldest giffgaff, the others virgin- cheaper with less data/minutes)

Be very very wary of contract phones for kids- even dd1 understands and hasn't taken her own contract the moment she turned 18.

Offered ds a better phone but he turned it down in favour of an extra 15 a month in ready cash!

Don't know what sort of phone DD has since my mum gave her it. I think it's a Sony something.
She's got a Tesco SIM only contract. I costs me £7.50 a month and meets her needs.
She did have PAYG but the cost of that is ridiculous.

both of mine have iPhones - 14yo ds has an iPhone 4s (it was his christmas present last year) and 13yo dd has an iPhone 3(my old one). They have monthly contracts. dd has asked for an iPhone 5 for her birthday.

agree blackberry no longer sought after ime.

I'd be interested in finding a cheaper contract though - so will be looking at giffgaff for them I think.

Just looked up giff gaff and sent for a free sim. Sounds really good.

Mine each have a Galaxy Y on giffgaff (the whole family are on it so we all call/text each other free).

dd 16 has Xperia j on 3 monthly contract
DS 18 just got Xperia Z on virgin which is good value.
If you are a virgin customer you can get £5 off a contract and if they have a ucas card a further 15%. The contract also includes free insurance.

ds (17) bought an older iphone off one of his mates and is on a contract of £7.50 a month for some talk, some internet and about 5000 texts

dd (15) has her Dad's old phone. She's on PAYG and £10 lasts her a year or more. She either talks to her friends in RL or FB chats with them in the evenings.

My twin DS have both got Galaxy mini 2 on T-mobile(EE) capped contract, it was a Christmas offer of £14 per month, unlimited internet, and texts and 50mins calls per month. I am sticking with this as long as I can, I have already done a free upgrade for them from the Mini1.

DD has a Galaxy S3 mini and loves it. When she started high school she was on PAYG, but kept running out of credit so I got a cheap contract (which wasn't enough as she sent 800 texts in the first month!). I upped her contract so she is on unlimited texts, but now she is 13 she tends to use Facebook rather than texting to keep in touch with her friends.

My DDs each have a nokia Lumia 520 and are very pleased with them. We pay £8.50 each a month with carphone warehouse (they're on talkmobile) and they get 250 minutes, 5000 texts and 250 mb of data. I told them to turn off the data and use wifi where possible, and only turn the data on for a short time if they need it.
