Leeds University

DS1 has Leeds as his first choice for Sports Journalism next year. [his choice of course!] Does anyone have good things to say about the uni?

DS1 is rubbish about sorting this stuff out and I'm floundering to be honest!

Don't know much about Leeds or Sports Journalism, but work for a university! KIS (Key Information Stats) widgets go live this year in course pages, and the Unistats website will make it easy to compare courses based on student satisfaction rates, facilities, employability, graduate income and all sorts of other things.

Open Days are a great way to get more information and a feel for the campus, and you get a good insight into the student experience from speaking to student ambassadors.

Print media or broadcast? I was a student journalist on the newspaper at uni, and got incredibly useful experience from working on the paper - has he checked that out? Most of them have an online presence these days, and the uni I went to has now got a TV station as well as radio and print.

I would expect that they'd also have a Facebook page, which might be worth looking at. Oh, and if they have any placements/bursaries - that's something I'd want to look into too; a lot of places do and with the new fees it's certainly something to investigate!

We were living in Spain when DS applied to Uni so I had to become more involved in the process than I would have done if he had been at school in the UK as he had no support from his school unless he wanted to stay in Spain.

As well as the sites suggested by Zoraya we used //www.thestudentroom.co.uk all the league tables from the Guardian, Times etc and, of course, the prospectus for each Uni he was interested in. However, it was really the course itself plus the experience of the Open Day which was crucial to informing his choice. He got to see the top 3 of his final 5 and knew immediately which he wanted to go to (not my choice but never mind - he's totally happy there).

As we were in Spain it wasn't cheap or easy to do but I couldn't imagine him turning up to live 4 years at somewhere he'd never even visited but loads of people do!

Finally, if you want more Leeds Uni based advice you could post this again under further education as I'm sure a number of mn's have kids there. Good luck.

I don't think they offer sports journalism at the university of Leeds but they do offer it at trinity college in Leeds. It's a catholic college and it's quite a way out of Leeds. I think being there would be quite a different experience to being at Leeds - not necessarily a bad thing but worth considering.

Eons ago I went to Leeds and Trinity and enjoyed living in Leeds a lot. I liked the small college environment more than being at a huge one.

Several lifetimes ago I went to Leeds Uni and it was FANTASTIC!! Great city to be a student in, the uni is campus based but central with Leeds Metropolitan just down the road so lots of students in one area. Lots of cheap rental places in walking distance etc

no idea how it fares for results and jobs etc now but try the new unistats website?

That's Leeds Trinity, not Leeds Uni.

And I know it's early days and I'm probably not telling you what you want to hear- but if he wants to go into 'Sports Journalism' he'll have a much easier time doing an English degree and getting relevant work experience with in the sport reporting sector. He'd also be able to work on the student news paper in the Sports section.

I'm sorry if you think I'm being harsh, and like you're saying- it's his choice. But 'Sports Journalism' at the ranked 113 university out of 120 at £9k per year plus living does not seem value for money.

I'd speak to his teachers in school before he sends off his application and maybe think about going for an English degree and picking journalism related modules.

I agree with EuroShopper. Unless your ds is predicted to get very low A Levels, he'd be much better off going to at least a medium-ranking university and do English Language.

Leeds Trinity is quite a long way out compared to Leeds Uni and Leeds Met, and going there would be a very different experience to being at one of the other two.

Yes there's been a misunderstanding,he thought Trinity was Leeds. He's not going to be an ABB achiever which he would need for course at Leeds Uni unless he pulls off something miraculous, he's predicted C's. It's causing some stress here to be honest at the moment and I'm speaking to college next week.

He's always been so easy going but he's being tricky at the moment.

Sugar, there's a brilliant website [http://university.which.co.uk/search/course]] here which a MNer put me onto; your son puts his predicted grades in, picks a course, and a rough area of where he'd like to study, and it comes up with a list of Unis which would be a good fit.

Saves the trawling through individual Uni websites.
