I shit you not!

She has just returned from a festival where they were all smoking it Hmm but apparently it's fine because it was Watermelon flavoured and not tobacco at all (right!)

She's not having one but I am tired and can't be arsed to have a sensible discussion tonight so could I have some suitable responses from Mumsnetters please?

Watermelon my arse Grin

they have herbal shisha flavour with no tobacco, whu do you think your dd is lying?

it is not common to use drugs in shisha if that is what you are implying, most people these days actually use them for the flavour and social interaction.

I think you should trust your dd more tbh.

have a look here, you will see smoke free tobacco free flavours etc (the smoke free one produces steam) //theshishashop.com

I think you're madly over reacting. My eldest and his friends love them and they are just fruity steam.

I've always found them far harsher then cigarettes TBH, they might not have tobacco in them but they are still corrosive!

Tell her they're kewel at a festival with loads of lanterns and low tables/bean bags but naff at home - like travelling fashion worn back home etc

I hardly think I am massively 'overreacting'

So are we saying that even the fruit inhalations are corrosive? Or is it just fruit steam?

The majority are fruit flavoured tobacco so not overreacting in my opinion at all.

How exactly would you police it only being fruit Confused as far as I can tell they smell the same

When my ds went this 1st festival a few yrs ago they loved the fruit Shisha and didn,t even associate it with drugs! There is a cafe cross the road from us which has it teenagers love it!

Surely I could just bung a few strawberries in? What's the difference?

She is citing 'social reasons'

It's this sort of stuff.

hookah

Tar free, tobacco free, nicotine free.

I've seen them at festivals and they are Tobacco free. There is a company that do all the festivals so I imagine it's that one. Think they're called the happy hookah!

Shisha/Hookah smoking has a higher incidence of mouth cancer. Show her some images of that and she might be put off.

Pure fruit ones are presumably fine, but I've never come across one...

They love the whole sit on the floor on cushions with candles chatting etc. he is 18 now and they have kind of got bored with it. None of them are into drugs all sweet kids

shisha is a big trend among teenagers, there are millions of shisha cafes in my area where teens hang out in an alcohol, drug free environment, most of them are marquee type things in back of cafes serving coffee and pannini, most of them do use tobacco flavours but there are a few that dont.

This is why she is stating social reasons as it is a big part of where teens socialise and congregate these days.

you could bung a few strawberries in but it wouldnt work! lol

yanbu for not wanting her to have a shisha, it is easy to check if it is tobacco free if you allow her to have it as you can see what she is buying and from where, but if you dont like the concept of her smoking fair enough. Also shisha uses coals so there is high possibility of burn holes in carpets etc if you let her have one.

There is absolutely no association's with drugs in the majority of shisha smokers minds. cannabis users wouldnt waste their weed putting it in to a shisha as it doesnt work properly and isnt as good as normal smoking weed to them. probably plenty have experimented once and found it to be not worth it.

aah! God, I have become a dinosaur and left my "cool" status behind for ever!!

It was all speed and snorting vodka in my day Wink. So it looks relatively harmless compared to that! but wouldn't she feel a bit daft sitting smoking a big hookah pipe thing sitting in the living room? I'd probably let her get it, make sure there was no tobacco in it, then sit snickering in a corner when she got it going. Bet if you were to join in enthusiastically it wouldn't seem quite so cool..even invite a few friends round?

No tobacco in the ones I have seen.

Fair enough - there are definitely tobacco free ones then, but the ones I've come across (and the ones that people in their 20s at work use) are not tobacco free.

I'm sure the ones that teenagers use are fine, but proper ones aren't and are as bad or worse than smoking.

See, even my thread title is uncool. Shouldn't it be that she wants a Shisha Pipe? Wink
