dd spends too much time on msn imo.Basically ,she has a snack after school in the kitchen,we chat, about 15 mins. She then is upstairs either doing homework, most probably though most of the time she's on msn.
We always have dinner together.
She disappears upstairs after dinner and dishes.I know teens are obsessed with their peers at this age,but was wondering if setting a limit on time spent on msn was usual.

I think most people on here would be a bit hypocritical setting a limit on their teenager's pc time, to be honest....

It is probably doing wonders for her social skills

nothing wrong with setting limits. If you think that her homework is suffering then do so.

If it's not a battle that you want to fight, then hang back, keep an eye and see.

Teens prefer their friends to us. We've never lived you see lol

A work colleague has just tracked down some software to limit her teenage daughter's use of MSN.

Her homework doesn't suffer, she's bright and motivated ...thankfully.

Part of it is that I miss seeing her/talking to her .She rolls her eyes when I tell her this btw.

Mars I don't know the details, but could ask my colleague for them if it would be useful?

Report
MarsOnLife · 17/01/2006 17:41

yes please dino. Be good to keep that one on the back burner.

The soft ware would be very useful.
i am lucky as DH is a computer whizz kid and has installed a key logger which means i see everything she types and it also takes screen shots at intervals so i can see what others are saying to her but i am not entirely happy with what i see.
however she can only acess net from pc in front room so we can keep eye on her any way

I've just gone up and spoken to dd about how I feel.
She doesn't think she spends too much time on msn but is willing to compromise.

Maybe if I let her use msn on the laptop downstairs I might get to see her.Should have thought of that sooner!

Oh dear, is it interfering with your Mumsnet time?

Ururupuin how/where did your dh get the key logger from? Sounds like something my Mum desperately needs for my 15yo sister who spends half the night on msn and some of the conversations I've seen of hers I think my Mum should be aware of!!

Ururupin, do you feel happy spying on your daughter's private conversations like that? If my parents had done that to me when I was a teenager and I had found out, that would have been the end of our relationship.

Report
starlover · 17/01/2006 18:53

erm.... you can set msn to save ALL conversations anyway... you don't need any key loggers!

Report
Tortington · 17/01/2006 19:04

yeh you can monitor their conversations - its great.

Report
DustAnyone · 22/01/2006 22:32

Can you monitor without knowing their log in details?

DP limits MSN for his dd when she comes to stay. She'd be on it all day if he'd let her

We'd be very interested to know how to log conversations, specially as her mum found some texts on her phone recently from a (male) classmate saying he wanted to sh*g her

She's 12

dd loves her msn but she doesn't know the password to get into it - haha! She has to ask so we are always in control. It also has parental controls so she can't access anything we don't approve of nor can she add any contacts without our prior approval.

We also save all her convos and check up on them too.

[I have no experience w teenage girls except being one]
Her behaviour sounds v familiar, except I'd disappear upstairs, read books and not do my homework!
At least you do get the 15min and dinner - perhaps you can work in Sophisticated Women time at the weekends for more indepth chats if you feel you're losing touch.

jules27 we've got our IT Manager from work coming to our house tomorrow night to do a few things with our laptop and he's going to show us how to log MSN conversations on dsd's laptop. I'll post either tomorrow night or during Friday and tell you how to do it
