14 year old US visitor wears ultra-short skirts all the time - parents asking for advice

hi! my sister in law's step-daughter is 14 and usually dresses in mini-mini skirts apparently. She's coming to visit us in a few weeks. My SIL reckons that it isn't the done thing in Yorkshire to wear such clothes (and my SIL did live here for a couple of years so probably is right) and asks for some tips/ links to cool dressing for 14 year olds round here.

I was hopeless - all the 14 year old girls I see are wearing uniform!

Any inspiration?

Well, i'm in North Yorkshire.
I went to my sons awards evening at school last night & i couldn't believe how short some of the girls skirts were.
My son just said that if a girl didn't wear a short skirt they would be made fun of.
When one girl went up on stage ( we were near the front) myself,DD & OH could see the girls knickers!!
I'm dreading my DD in two years going to the same school & wearing a skirt that length.
The school is an "outstanding" one with very good results.[hshock]

Just to say the girls blazers were longer than their school skirts.[hgrin]

most 14 yr old girls around here are wearing leggings, jeggings, jeans with /without shorts/mini skirts.[hwink]

Short skirts at 14 is normal I think. It goes with the orange foundation and black eye liner iirc

My 14 year old and her friends wear jeans, leggings, cut-offs. Never skirts unless with leggings under.

Interesting that teen fashion appears to be so different between groups/regions.

My two are both Top Shop-y.
White or blue denim hotpants with a chiffon-y top
Short skirt, vest top, pale denim jacket

I have to say, both of mine are leggy stunners and as I don't have a problem with them showing their legs unless it's inappropriate for the occasion. They won't be wearing hot pants and very short skirts when they're my age so they may as well enjoy it while they're young.

Can't bear laddered tights though - see other thread!

I'd let her wear whatever she wants really OP -she'll very quickly adjust what she's wearing to fit in if she wants/ needs to.

She would fit right in here, Lancs, with dd and her friends, all 14 -15. Their school skirts are shorter than their blazers.

thanks for that helpful advice. I know I'm sounding as though her dad and step-mum are control freaks - really they aren't, they are nice.

I'm going to tell me SIL that girls might tend to be wearing their short skirts with leggings underneath and with UGG boots type footwear.

Then she can bring her normal kit, perhaps be influenced by her dad into putting some leggings or skinny jeans into the suitcase as well and make her decisions when she gets here.
