Hello, my 11 1/2 year old Daughter has been complaining that her armpit/chest hurts.

I had a look last night and there is a lump underneath her nipple. I said to her 'Ooh you are growing boobies'! I would like to put our minds at rest though because it only seems to be on one side.

Not having been through this before and being far to old to remember when it all happened to me, could someone tell me if this is normal.

I hate being one of those parents that worries all the time - but I can't help it!!

Cheers

Viccar

So very normal - please don't worry! She's the right age for sure. I remember tucking DD in one night and feeling like a hard pea on her chest, it was quite shocking, then I realised what it was! Blush

It is just the breast bud appearing, and the other one will be along shortly.

Yes they usually appear one at a time Grin in fact I remembering worrying myself at that age because one breast bud grew ages before the other.. both the same now tho!

Incidentally boys can also get swollen bumps too when they hit puberty... my DS1 was very worried when it happened but it vanished after a couple of months:)

My dd who is 9 has just got one on one side only. She said to me that one nipple feels hard and when she let me feel it I could feel it was a breast bud! She also has under arm hair - she seems so young for this.
She was worried it was only one side but I told her the other side will catch up.

Thank you very much for that, you have put my mind at rest!

You know it's hard work being a parent, nobody gives you a manual. But I guess that is why we have Mumsnet!!!

My Daughter has been complaining of aches and pains and I did say to her that they were growing pains. Cannot believe she is growing up into a young lady.

Thank you!

This link has been so helpful. My ten year old daughter has started growing a little pubic hair and last night told be her nipples were sore. I know this is the start....I gave her the whole talk about periods last year and she's always known, with appropriate updates' about how babies are conceived. I really had hoped she would have another year before she started to move into puberty...I remember the breast pain myself...is there anything I can do to ease her discomfort...I can't just give her Calpol for the next six months or more.

Pam - when this was our DD she started wearing a camisole vest type top under her school shirt because she was a bit self conscious but also because the buds made her sore and they rubbed otherwise. I don't remember it lasting very long though.
