Guinea pigs living in the garage: would you consider it in this situation?

Had our house extended/renovated last year, including a big kitchen/breakfast room with bifold doors, glass rooflights etc. This is where our four guineas have been living (we have two indoor cages) since the renovations were completed. it's not an ideal permanent location for them though as it gets quite hot on sunny days.

There isn't really any room to keep them in the lounge, or the kids room, so I was wondering whether the garage would be an option. I know garages aren't generally considered suitable due to car fumes/damp/poor insulation etc. However, this one is newly built, so has never and will never have a car in it, and we don't keep any other chemicals out there either. It's also been insulated, plastered and painted, has proper flooring, electricity and ventilation - it's basically done up to the 'spec' of a utility room, if that makes sense - and the door is one that seals flush to the floor, so no draughts or chance of predators creeping in. It wouldn't quite have the social aspect of the kitchen, but we're always in and out of the garage collecting bikes/scooters/wellies etc, and my eldest DS has some gym training equipment there too so it's in frequent use.

The only thing it doesn't have is a window to let in natural light. It does though have an internal door through to the utility room, which could be propped open to let some natural light through.

I am in a dilemma with this one...it's not perfect but then neither is the kitchen-diner. The garage would probably be a better temperature for them as it stays fairly constant, but the lack of natural light is troubling me a bit. Would you consider putting the pigs into the garage in this situation?

No I wouldn't.

Two reasons - firstly the lack of natural light and secondly they're likely to be forgotten about.

Our GPs live outside and they love sitting in the sun and watching the world go by - living alone in a windowless room seems a bit sad Sad

No window - no pigs Wink.

I just wouldn't because of the lack of window. Otherwise it sounds like a great space. No natural light would be a bit sad and depressing for them and not great for their health.

a sturdy hutch outside with a good all weather cover for when the weather gets chilly, but not a windowless garage, sorry.

Thanks guys...you have kind of confirmed what I suspected.

For the moment they're fine in the kitchen diner (will only become a problem come spring/summer) so I will leave them where they are for now and have a think about things over the winter.

Why not put them outside in spring / summer? They love being outside on the grass etc

They go out on the grass in their runs whenever the weather is good Olly but their hutches are indoor ones and not weatherproof. They've always lived indoors (in wheeking distance from fridge Grin) and tbh I like having them in the house, we just need to rehome them to somewhere other than the kitchen diner in the warmer months.

Until we got our GPs I had no idea how loud they could be - and just how cross they could sound!!

I know. Our youngest pig has one heck of a squeak on her. You could hire her out as a burglar alarm! Grin

No, they need company and you'd not see them much. Ndn has a GP in their shed, I've never seen it out of the shed and they only go in to feed it :(

I think that would be ok if you leave a light on and put it out in a run in good weather.
