I think my GP is on his way out :(

GP is almost 5 years old. His brother died earlier this year from a sudden illness including foaming at mouth. This GP has just been to the vets about his redennign eyes, manky flaking ears and impaction. Vet checked him over, gave him ear drops and showed me what to do with his bum (a lovely job). I was told to wash him in special shampoo three times per week, trim his long hair so he is easy to dry, dry his hair and apply ear drops.

That was a week ago. I only managed to wash him once as he didnt seem right a few days later, but I put it down to him feeling sorry for himself. Now, the fur has gone from round his eyes, and he seems lethargic. He is eating, but it is less. He seems happy, and has just spent a few minutes on my lap wheeking and doing that head flicky thing to make me stop.

His breathing sounds a bit rattly. I don't think he's in imminent danger of death, or that anyone could do anything. I have put his (indoor) cage nearer to the radiator and turned the heating on for a few hours so he can stay warm. But I can't see him lasting another week. Poor pig. Run free with your brother :(

Poor lad , he's been through alot hasn't he?

The rattly breathing is a worry though, most guinea deaths that I've seen have started with respiratory problems (like a tucked up, starey, leave me alone posture) and rough breathing.

The 3 washes a week seems alot too, it's very difficult to make sure they are 100% dry (we use a low blast of the hairdryer, lots of towels and finish off in a box of hay)

TBH if it's eyes, ears, breathing, bunged up bottom and feeling sorry for himself it sounds like he is on his road out.
Cherish him for whatever time he has left, spoil him with his favourite treats.
Keep a check on his temperature, I'd be inclined to insulate him with lots of hay rather than artificial heat , make sure he doesn't get too hot indoors.

You might need to syringe feed and water him if he gets too past it.

:( If he gets to the point of syringe feeding, I'll pop the poor lad down to the vet :( Would rather like to be able to do that monday evening though when DH home with the children (they're my dd's GP's) because I don't think its fair taking my 6yr old with me.

GP doesnt really enjoy sitting with us, but I'll keep popping in a bit of celery and cucumber and give him a head rub :)

They do go from Well to Dead alarmingly quickly though Sad

When my GP2 was on his way out, we dutifully pushed Critical Care into his little mouth and Vit C water because we felt we needed to do something though I knew deep down that he'd reached the point of no return,

Our pig saw the vet at 12 noon and died that evening . I really didn't want to have him PTS and to be fair , I did say to the vet that I wanted him to die at home (don't know if that comes across as a bit mean to my pig but I'm sure if the vet thought I was cruelly keeping him alive, he'd have said). But in the end, we had another 8 hours with him, and they were peaceful hours.

You might find that the next 24 hours will seal his fate one way or t'other.

Sad

sorry guys was dealing with a poorly family now! Piggy is still with us, in no better or worse state (but a bit more hay). Seems happy enough, breathing not as rattly,i think he has a bit of a cold though, is all sneezy. might try him down at vets with some antibiotics tomorrow (though I'm pretty sure they'll recommend something other than a cure for this poor boy :( )

70 - i am under a different name now, but I thought you'd like to know that sockpig is still going strong, and no need for socks any more ;)

Definitely get him antibiotics if he has a cold/chest infection. Mine has totally perked up since starting his. He has something else wrong imo but seems happy and perky enough

He's booked in tonight. DH and 2 kids had d&v so I've been pretty busy (poor pig :( ). He's just sitting, doing not much :( I don't think antibiotics will do much tbh but of course ill ask vets opinion. He's no longer snuffling or looking ill; just doing nothing. Only the odd nibble on cucumber xx

Took piggy to vet. they said his impaction had moved most of the way up into his stomach; but we could try flushing it out with regular syringes of water with probiotics in. plus obviously manual evacuation like i had been doing.

Also antibiotics for possible respiratory issues, and a cream for skin issues.

she said due to his age and amount of conditions he may well perk up in the short term, but long term prognosis wasnt great.

Having watched my father die an undignified death from cancer, i chose the kindest and quickest way out for this little fellow. Run free in fields of dandelions little pig, your brother is waiting. (got a bit teary writing that) xxx

I'm sorry to hear that, zumby. Must have been a sad decision.

Aww Sad but it sounds like you made the best decision, really the only decision for your piggie.

Antibiotics do have their place but they are not without side effects.
But when a guinea stops eating and poohing there's not alot of hope TBH.

His brother will be beyond The Bridge to share the dandelions.
Sleep sound knowing that you did your absolute best and your pig isn't going to suffer.

Sorry to hear your sad news Zumby. It's a hard and brave decision to make but was the best for him. He'll be over the bridge wallowing in plentiful dandelions with his brother. Hope you and your family are okay. Thanks
