You do realise Sleeping there is no such thing as Spoilt piggies

The RSPCA states (not word for word but approx)
They need:

suitable environment
suitable diet
freedom to exhibit normal behavior
to be kept with suitable companion or apart from other animals as applicable
freedom from pain, injury, illness

Our Pigs just think that we are providing all their legal requirements but a bit better.
Because they are speshul , Rescues and deserve it.
Are they in the least bit grateful? Hell no Grin

Our little boy (who is now huge- we were told he was a Swiss but DD and I did some online searches and reckon he's a Rex. We sent an email to the Rescue to let them know how he's getting on. She said 'Yes, he sounds like a Rex'. He came from a breeder who didn't want to keep the pigs).

We reckon he's landed on his rather large Rex feet . He's got GP1. The fuss and attention of DD who adores her boys.
And yes, they are spoiled.

And you know. There's nothing wrong with spoiling guinea-pigs. At all Wink

I've got GP envy looking at your lovely lovely cuddlies.

My DC are grown up now so I have no excuse to buy some. Sad

It;s strange having new piggies. I know from your posts about Salt and Pepper when you got your new piglets (from BIL IIRC)

I was the same with GP3. We got him because we needed him. Our GP1 wasn't happy alone,
But it was Sad because we'd lost GP2 (the little black one) and he was ds my pig.

Not that GP3 replaced GP2 - he's his own pig in his own right- but it was sad that we were in a situation of having to get a new pig.
Then even sadder that he was in the situation of needing a new home (ex breeder stock)

So it all worked out and DD was delighted to have a piglet. He's a character now. He is quite a big bold bolshy boar now,
If he doesn't like something he kicks with his back leg [weird pig].

It's lovely to hear them pootling about. Ours are in the small bedroom at night. They have towels and bathmats to sleep on. And a trug of hay.

They are very pampered pigs Wink

We are relatively new to this piggy malarkey (since August) and I'm worried ours are spoilt - they are in their indoor cage which is next to the fridge. They weeeeeep and look starved every time the I get the milk out for my tea. I was dead against having them so I think there is an element of guilt as they are quite definitely the best pets ever.

I think a trug of hay would be ideal, I might have to pinch this idea!

They get very wheeky when they learn what the fridge is for Grin

Our GP2 never squeaked but he purred and made nomnomnom food noises
GP1 does an unholy shriek when he's picked up, though now he's getting a bit middle aged it's more a whistle than a shriek.

GP3 - never stops. He;s the "food food food " alert one.

Chopping veg
Rustling a paper bag
All guarenteed to set him off (even if he's in the garden he can hear the fridge door open)

You cannot spoil pigs. Mine have a large cage within earshot of the fridge, daily access to a large run in the conservatory, lots of cuddle time, endless supplies of parsley, plenty of hay and veg, big boxes to play in and they still tell me they need more and stare at me judgily as though i'm neglecting them. I think they want to live with Auntie Guineapiglet Grin

Ours were born knowing what the fridge is for. I can't even have a sneaky packet of crisps any more, the rustle of the packet sets them off! Our two boars are obsessed with food, GP1 is bigger but GP2 is bolder so GP2 gets first dibs of the food bowl and GP1 snatches what he fancies out his mouth. GP2 isn't the brightest pig in the pen and spends a while looking for the missing food. They will eat a carrot like the Lady & Tramp and meet in the middle.

Both GPs get endless cuddles but cannot bear to be separated, GP1 gets particularly upset when he cannot see GP2 and shouts very loudly. GP1 hides in your hair and GP2 headbutts if you stop stroking.

They are great fun. I can't believe I've got to nearly 40 and only just got to appreciate the joy of GPs Grin

70 it is so strange having new piggies. As it happened so quickly I had no time to adjust :( my 2 year old calledone of our new piggies 'pepper' the other day and I had the biggest lump in my throat!

But what can I say, I couldn't bear to bed without Daisy & Poppy now. I do think it helped my eldest too.

They are currently scoffing broccoli and listening to the sound of our dishwasher! :)

GP1 and GP2 live in a cage on a shelf above our rabbit. Whenever I clean both cages I put parsley in for them to eat. I did the GP's this morning and put them back in their cage whilst I cleaned the rabbit cage out. The whole time I had GP1 wheeping in my ear as I hadn't put the parsley in for them.
I'm a terrible owner making them wait! Grin.
I put some parsley in GP3's cage and he's smelt it and walked off.
I'd better not tell GP1 and GP2 this as they weren't too happy about getting less parsley due to GP3 now living with us.
All I can hear when I walk past the cages is GP and rabbit munching.
There is no other sound like it!Grin.
They've all had big cuddles this morning and fresh hay so are now very happy GP's.

I'd be very suspicious of a guinea-pig that didn't leap on the parsley and devour it like they were starving.
Maybe your new piggie is just settling down and wants to make a good impression?
But your other pigs will be eyeballing him saying "Well it looks like a guinea and it smells like a guinea..."
One of my guineas I had years back looked like a rat with no tail. I was always Hmm in case I'd been conned. But she was pg when I got her and her piglet was a piglet. But a very weird one.

This is why GPs are the superior race over rabbits. The noises.

It's funny you say that 70, GP3 is pure white with red eyes and at a glance could be mistaken for a rat but he is definitely a GP ( I hope! )
He's eaten some of the parsley but is more interested in his food, hay and carrot.
I love our rabbit dearly but the GP's have so much character and are such funny little things!

Audi - my Smoothpig would like to swap his brother for your GP3 as he's then get more parsley Wink

Hi all - I too would be verrrrry suspicious of a non devouring parsley guineapig! Having said that, NONE of my girls liked the stuff, and were very judgey about it. I had to swap a parsley bed for a spinach bed in our garden and they were constantly found in it whilst they free ranged, nibbling it down to a stalk...... either there or under the lemon balm, which they loved when it was sunny, so they could get the shade and smell devine at the same time!

Fernie IF i still lived near you, your boys would be welcome for a spoiling sleepover, I have just had a photo of the two guinea nephews ( one the new adoped one who was 'no longer needed' - they are now BFFs and the arsey one is still sitting in his cage, being, well, arsey - the other two are having a whale of a time.... it shows you that you can never win with them, and they are their own personalities whatever we do to them!!

:) :)

Report
FernieB · 25/11/2013 20:28

Maybe the 'arsey' one just enjoys being like that. I did have an exceedingly grumpy rabbit once - she just liked being bad tempered Wink

Glad the other two have settled down together. My boys have just had a rousing game of 'that's my cucumber' which involved a lot of racing around and wheeking after a small bit of cucumber while a much larger piece sat and watched them from the middle of the cage Confused.

Awww you posted twice - one for GP1 one for GP3

They read the parsley word and are wrapping themselves in parcel tape as I type (watch you don;t wax yerself Dill, you'll be a skinny guinea )

They will be fine without a garden till Spring time, as long as the parsley keeps a-growing.

My piggies are DESIGNER today... They are currently each curled up in Aspinal paper bags that are stuffed with hay...

Before you get any ideas that I am rich and can afford to shop at Aspinal my boss bought me the bags in FOR the girls... They are famous in my office....

We've got 6 girls (3 lots of siblings). GPs1 are 2.5, GPs2 are 1.2, GPs3 are 0.7

They are currently on the living room floor, in their outside run (with lots of newspaper under and hay) fighting over (more than enough) cabbage and apple peelings!

I spoil my girls rotten! The youngest pair belong to dd2, the middle pair belong to ds and dd1, the oldest pair are all mine (they were my Mother's Day present!!)

I only work 2.5 days, and when I'm in I love to hear them chatting, fighting over the water bottle, squeeeeeeeeching with delight at a blade of grass or a carrot top, munching hay.

They are the best pets (with apologies to Speedy MacReadie, our house rabbit!).

guineapiglet my boys are packing up and booking their train tickets. They read about your parsley and feel that it needs pruning for the winter, so they're on their way. They are slightly worried that 'rockery' implies that climbing will be involved, but will take the chance and just use 70's boys as steps to reach any high bits.

Report
guineapiglet · 26/11/2013 11:29

Wow! So I need to get to the station after the postman has been with 70s boys - my rockery will be delighted to have all the boys doing some proper gardening, although it is a tad nippy, so make sure they have thermals packed as well. Sadly it is rather hilly, which is why I havent yet come up with a way of lawning it over, but it is full of guinea delights. THe deadly nightshade is in the back garden so they had better avoid that!
< prepares to walk down hill to station!>

weegiemum your house sounds just like my house used to sound :(
Full of delighted noises, fighting over ONE bit of food whilst the plentiful supply around them stares them in the face Fernie, I loved your boys fighting over one bit of cucumber .....

THey are indeed the best pets, and I am preparing, as we speak a dandelion salad for the nephews round the corner. After last guinea-less christmas, I shall have lots of boys to spoil Grin
