What's your holy grail foundation?

So far my favourite is double wear light but its not quite my HG.

I've just ordered a lily lolo starter kit after a recommendation on here.

I like medium to full coverage but not mask like. I'm also very pale so finding a colour match can be difficult!

DisgruntledAardvark Sun 11-May-14 11:49:14

Armani Designer Shaping Cream. I've tried what feels like every foundation under the sun (very dry and pale skin, pink toned - so a lot of the paler foundations look way too yellow), and this has been the best by far. I wish it was cheaper, but you don't need to use much (and it's not mask like or anything.)

EyelinerQueen Sun 11-May-14 12:02:40

I'm very pale and have been on a foundation hunt for the last 2 years.

In that time I've bought and liked but not adored

Illamasqua Skin Base

MAC Studio Sculpt

Benefit Oxygen Wow

Clinique Even Better

Laura Mercier Silk Creme

NARS Sheer Glow

EL Double Wear

YSL Touche Eclat

but have finally found my holy grail foundation!

Makeup Forever HD Foundation (in shade 115).

I've had to order from Sephora US but even the £20 didn't make me hesitate. It's incredible. The best foundation I've ever used. Manages to provide medium to full coverage while making your skin look and feel completely natural and velvet-like and flawless. I'm in love!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen Sun 11-May-14 12:20:31

Revlon colour stay. I've tried them all and good old Revlon wins for me.

AmIGoingMad Sun 11-May-14 12:22:20

Thanks for your responses! Eyeliner what shade were you on the mac one? I was matched as nw15 but it was a big too dark really. They seem reluctant to match you to a sufficiently pale base!

Both sound good. Like you say I'm not too bothered price wise as long as its not extortionate and lasts!

EyelinerQueen Sun 11-May-14 12:24:18

NW15 as well but it's far too dark.

They don't do a lighter shade in the Studio Sculpt only in the Studio Fix which I don't like the formula of.

It's very frustrating!

middleagedspread Sun 11-May-14 12:28:58

Don't get the Bobbi Brown foundation stick, it's rubbish.
I quite like the Skin Foundation though.

proseccoco Sun 11-May-14 14:04:48

Am also very pale. I rate House of Colour foundation - it's the only one not to make me look like a clown or bring me out in spots.

goodasitgets Sun 11-May-14 14:17:18

Urban decay naked skin liquid
I'm pale and love it, it blends easily with a stippling brush and looks v natural
Definitely not mask like, I have it on here instagram.com/p/lf2H_QNd3u/

Have tried nars sheer glow which I like but is thicker and doesn't work on skin with any dry patches. Illamasqua skin base is nice but again is harder work to make it look good

BumWad Sun 11-May-14 14:37:27

I'm still searching!

Onsera3 Sun 11-May-14 14:48:32

They sell the Makeup Forever HD at Sephora France. Prob more exp but shipping might be less than from States.

I've tried the Armani and Nars ones. Preferred the Armani but too big a gap btw shades. They have some really pale ones.

Currently using ELDW and Colorstay and prefer the ELDW but alas still searching for my HG.

WitchWay Sun 11-May-14 16:20:25

I don't like to look too "done" & am currently using Clinique CC cream, which is more like a tinted moisturiser.

EyelinerQueen Sun 11-May-14 16:23:05

Thanks for the tip Onsera smile .

There are definitely some good drugstore options out there at the minute. Have recently bought both Revlon ColourStay and L'Oreal True Match which have shades pale enough for me - I'm just not in love with either product.

AlpacaYourThings Sun 11-May-14 16:28:39

I like to use MAC Studio Fix in NC15.

I find NW15 too dark, but NC15 is perfect. Why isn't there an NC10, I'm not particularly pale.

QuinnFabray Sun 11-May-14 16:32:41

Currently Clarins Everlasting. If anyone is looking for a good alternative to Estée Lauder Double Wear, this is very good. Pale shades too.

I was an ELDW fan for a long time, but it started to age me. The Clarins is much more natural.

Amethyst24 Sun 11-May-14 16:38:24

Looks like you can get the MUFE in the UK

Am really ken to try it as I'm after a new foundation, so thanks for the rec.

EyelinerQueen Sun 11-May-14 16:41:28

Yeah I got all excited when I found that link Amethyst but my shade isn't there sad .

Would have been much cheaper.

AmIGoingMad Sun 11-May-14 18:20:41

Thanks for the recommendations!

I've got a few to try over next few months now!

Keep them coming!

Mumelie Sun 11-May-14 18:22:40

Clinique Even Better mixed with Smashbox primer. I like medium to full coverage that lasts and this does. No slipping off my chin and no spots. Love it!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen Sun 11-May-14 18:35:06

If you like smash box primer you need lanacane anti chaff gel-same stuff for a fraction of the price!

EyelinerQueen Sun 11-May-14 18:37:19

Oh hell yes to Lanacane.

I changed from my ££ primer a few months ago and it's just amazing. Will be using it permanently.

A worthy MN recommendation (unlike the much lauded Soap and Glory foot file which I finally got this week and is shit!).

AmIGoingMad Sun 11-May-14 18:44:06

Yes Dame I believe it was your recommendation on another thread that led to that purchase here! It's great!

QuinnFabray Sun 11-May-14 19:07:33

Smash box/Lanacane isn't for everyone. I hate the silicone feel, makes me want to claw my face off, and it does nothing for my oil control. Instead of just being an oily mess, I'm an oily plasticky mess. I prefer a lotion type primer. MAC SPF 50 is really good.

EyelinerQueen Sun 11-May-14 19:18:26

Yeah from what I've read it's recommended to work best on normal to dry skins Quinn.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen Sun 11-May-14 20:32:51

Mac has silicone in it so it must just be the formula that's better for you rather than the silicone iyswim.

coffeeinbed Sun 11-May-14 20:37:23

I've been using Chantecaille Just Skin Tinted Moisturiser for over four tubes now.
And a tube lasts me six months or so.

Schmoochypoos Sun 11-May-14 20:41:13

coffeeinbed I can second your recommendation for chantecaille just skin, very light coverage, doesn't block pores, no horrible smell and lasts for ages!

eyeliner I buy MUFE from gurumakeupemporium

My HG is NARS Sheer Glow

coffeeinbed Sun 11-May-14 20:44:04

It looks really natural, doesn't it?
Good stuff, that.

FluffyDucky Sun 11-May-14 20:44:08

Elizabeth Arden mineral foundation (in the grinder pot), No7 Stay perfect Superlight and Stay perfect. I've been using No7 Instant Radiance quite a bit too recently.
I've used MAC foundations in the past, I think I used the cream one, I was very happy with it at the time.
I LOVE Bobbi Brown tinted moisturiser (in the pot) but alas a little too pricey for me thesedays

KenDoddsDadsDog Sun 11-May-14 20:45:12

YSL teint éclat

RubyrooUK Sun 11-May-14 21:02:45

Armani Maestro. Just brilliant on my skin. Tinted moisturisers make no difference to me; most foundations just seem to sit on my skin and highlight the flaws. This one makes me look like me but better.

I think it all depends on your skin type though. I have used others that have worked well at certain times (eg Bare Minerals, YSL airbrush one, MAC, Prescriptions) then pregnancy/temperature changes suddenly render it useless for me. So I think it's trial and error in the main.

TheWorldAccordingToJC Sun 11-May-14 21:47:14

I've tried them all. And I mean ALL

Currently on Stila 20 watts. Quite impressed

AmIGoingMad Sun 11-May-14 21:58:19

Hmm I like the idea of tinted moisturiser and bb cream etc but I'm always massively disappointed they haven't turned me into a perfectly glowing creature! I've come to the conclusion that I need more coverage and must find a foundation that does this!grin

icanmakeyouicecream Sun 11-May-14 22:43:58

Garnier BB cream, then bare minerals.

AmIGoingMad Tue 13-May-14 22:22:09

The lily lolo sample pack arrived today! Looking forward to trying it!

singaporeswing Wed 14-May-14 02:27:04

I've been wearing Laura Mercier Moisture Supreme recently, which looks fantastic on my dry skin.

It's a great colour match too (NW20 - Blush Ivory).

I love the formulation of MUFE HD but can't seem to get a great colour match, it's all a little too yellow for me, but is my go-to for when I've got more of a tan.

I'm desperate to try out NARS Sheer Glow and the Giorgio Armani one. I also use Lancome Teint Miracle when I'm doing bridal make up as it photographs perfectly and is a great formulation.

EyelinerQueen Wed 14-May-14 07:10:10

Yeah singapore my MUFE shade, Ivory (115) is for palest and pink toned skin. After that there's a 9 shade gap before the next shade for pink tones confused.

Maybe I'd built it up too much but NARS Sheer Glow was a huge disappointment to me sad.

On a makeup ban now for a while so won't be indulging in any new ones anytime soon!

TheFillyjonk Wed 14-May-14 07:21:00

Nobody's mentioned my absolute holy grail foundation - Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua. It gives a beautiful fresh finish and makes me look more velvety, if that makes sense.

polyhymnia Wed 14-May-14 10:05:44

The lighter (in texture not colour) the better for me. Heavy foundation is very aging.
Second the Chantecaille one. Also love Laura Mercier and Becca tinted moisturisers.

aster Wed 14-May-14 11:03:22

I have to agree with middle the Bobbi Brown Foundation Stick is a great colour match (Natural) which goes on nicely but has zero staying power. I now need a new foundation and have to start the whole palaver again.

Onsera3 Wed 14-May-14 12:04:34

Yes Nars Sheer Glow was a bit of a let down. Good coverage without being too heavy but pooled in my pores making them noticeable when they never usually are.

middleagedspread Wed 14-May-14 12:17:50

aster, I wonder if I'm putting it on wrong? I couldn't get on with using a brush so tried to swipe it straight on. It feels very thick.
The reviews I read were glowing, which seems very odd.

EyelinerQueen Wed 14-May-14 12:39:33

Blimmin eck!

My MUFE HD that I ordered only 4 days ago from Sephora U.S. has just arrived shock .

What amazing service! And it's so pretty grin .

Rochiana54 Wed 14-May-14 17:05:23

Mac sits on my face like a second skin.

If I could afford it, I would buy Mac brushes, eye shadow and blusher. Sadly my budget only stretches to foundation and concealer.

BerylStreep Wed 14-May-14 17:08:46

Trish McEvoy tinted moisturiser.

TickleMyTitsTillFriday Wed 14-May-14 18:11:12

Benefit Oxygen Wow

NeverEndingLaundry Wed 14-May-14 18:24:50

TheFillyjonk I love Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua too. Best colour match ever for my skin is the second palest one.

This is the only high end make up I own and I'm going to buy it again when it runs out.

amothersplaceisinthewrong Wed 14-May-14 18:26:36

No 7 Stay Perfect with No 7 Airbrush Away primer underneath it. I glow.

AmIGoingMad Wed 14-May-14 18:47:44

Which mac do you wear rochiana?
