I know it's £££ but am considering it as an investment bag.

Anyone got one? How big is it? Worth the money?

This one:

buttercrumble Sun 23-Feb-14 23:10:57

I've got the large oak and it's absolutely beautiful , I use it for smart and casual .It always gets admiring looked. Would defiantly recommend smile

buttercrumble Sun 23-Feb-14 23:13:57

Meant to say definitely recommend blush

MauriceMinor Mon 24-Feb-14 00:30:21

I have the smaller one in oak. It's pretty old now but still looks good, very easy to wear.

Dancergirl Mon 24-Feb-14 07:39:55

Think I prefer the smaller one.

DuchessFanny Mon 24-Feb-14 13:11:20

They are lovely, i would go for the larger one. In oak too.
A few friends have one and they've lasted them years !

Doyouthinktheysaurus Mon 24-Feb-14 14:12:16

I love mine, it's aged really well.

Mine was bought in the sale a few years back, it looks as good as new tbh.

I do think they are a but overpriced now though, the hike has been massive. Mine was half price and I think it cost £180, now full price for the size I've got is £500+!

I did seriously think about the navy one they did a few years back but the prices went up by nearly £100 while I was debating it.

Anyway, if you've got the money, it really is a lovely bag.

Gorgeous bags I have the small in oak - was £315 two weeks ago and a large ink with silvery/dark metalware was £395 before Christmas. Get thyself to the SheptonMallet outlet!!

NewChoos Mon 24-Feb-14 15:44:44

I love mine but wish I had got the larger size.

Dancergirl Mon 24-Feb-14 22:37:12

newchoos how much can you get in the smaller one? I don't really like huge bags.

Where's the best place to buy? John Lewis have sold out of the oak.

buttercrumble Mon 24-Feb-14 23:15:25

I bought mine in house of fraser, and took dd with me to use her student discount. £60 off was a big saving smile

Ring the outlets 315 instead of 495 no brainer grin

annaban Mon 24-Feb-14 23:27:41

The purse forum is great for info..

outlet info

It's an old post, but updated regularly. I hope you get your bag!! grin

NewChoos Tue 25-Feb-14 07:37:43

You can fit a purse, mobile, lip balm and a min hand cream smile Sunglasses without case, just….

DuchessFanny Tue 25-Feb-14 10:35:56

I happen to know there was a small one in chocolate for £315 at the Somerset outlet -- but that was over a week ago and not sure how far from there you are.

stringbean Tue 25-Feb-14 10:47:13

I've got a large Antony, in chocolate, and I love it; it's such a classic, understated bag. Personally, I think the small one is a bit too small, but that's just my preference. I bought it at John Lewis when there was 20% off on the Black Friday w/end last November, which represented a good saving.

GypsyFloss Tue 25-Feb-14 10:52:13

I've got the large oak, bought at the same time as stringbean. Initially I bought the smaller one but returned it as it didn't hold enough and I felt that it looked proportionally wrong on me. I love the larger one and it holds every I need to to without being oversized on my frame.

MissMilbanke Tue 25-Feb-14 11:21:04

I have the large one in oak, bought 7 years ago (to put nappies in what was I thinking ???? )

Bought it at Stansted airport for way under £200. Its a great bag, still going strong but i think they are to expensive now.

Lorelilee Tue 25-Feb-14 13:07:21

Yup, I've got the small one in Grey, with silver lock, love it - cost 200 5 years ago. They are WAY too expensive these days.

They just launched a new bag yesterday 'The Kensal' which is GORGEOUS but even the smallest one is 950 - WAY out of my league.

ClaraFox Tue 25-Feb-14 13:09:26

Yes I've got a large Antony in black and a small one in oak.

I like it , it's well made and always looks nice and smart. Bear in mind it isn't lined ( as per all of them really ) and only has a small zip compartment inside.

It's lovely quality though and mine looks as good as new three years on

Dancergirl Tue 25-Feb-14 18:43:16

Had a look at both sizes in John Lewis today. I now think the larger one is more practical, small one is really quite small!

carrielou - ink? As in navy? Sounds lovely. I thought it only came in oak, dark brown and black.

I'm nowhere near Shepton Mallett - do they do mail order? I could get to Bicester village though....

stringbean Tue 25-Feb-14 19:26:01

<Waves to GypsyFloss> - Hope you're enjoying using your bag as much as I am!!

annaban Tue 25-Feb-14 19:37:08

OP see my post above re: mail order

GypsyFloss Tue 25-Feb-14 19:41:41

I am stringbean grin

Ink is navy yes and gorgeous grin. Outlets will post but not everything. We went to look for small Oak they didn't have any so bought Alexa instead they rang me few days later as they had posted to me the same day wink

Dancergirl Tue 25-Feb-14 21:55:43

Thanks all for your help smile

I'm going to phone the outlets tomorrow. Not sure now if I prefer ink or oak!

annaban Tue 25-Feb-14 22:53:40

I'm with Carrielou - the Alexa is a gorgeous bag too... Back up choice if the Anthony isn't available?

cafecito Tue 25-Feb-14 22:55:52

but it's small and called Antony

tangyyoghurt Wed 26-Feb-14 00:22:09

I have the large Antony in the chocolate colour. I already have a Mulberry in Oak, so went for a different colour. It is a really nice bag and a good size (large). It's great when casual and I love being hands free.

Dancergirl Wed 26-Feb-14 11:08:38

I just phoned the Shepton Mallett shop and they said they don't have any in at the moment and don't get them very often as they are a regular line and very popular.

I really want it now but not sure I can justify £595 shock

Lorelilee Wed 26-Feb-14 12:16:43

Bugger, I now want the Antony in Ink!

Dancergirl Wed 26-Feb-14 12:39:52

Me too loreliee very hard to find by the looks of it.

tangyyoghurt Wed 26-Feb-14 12:45:13

Party pooper alert.

Is the ink colour a passing phase or is it a colour that will hold the test of time? I am now coveting the ink one, but desperately trying to convince myself that my chocolate one is classic.

Arghhhh I want it too.

Dancergirl Wed 26-Feb-14 12:59:08

Anyone know where you can get the ink??

forbreakfast Wed 26-Feb-14 17:37:10

Hate them. I think they're the cheapest Mulberry you can buy and they're ubiquitous round here

forbreakfast Wed 26-Feb-14 17:39:09

And I dislike the canvas strap. It's a really masculine looking bag too

Sorry for being voice of dissent

mrsrhodgilbert Wed 26-Feb-14 18:56:32

I like them, I have two small ones. They are very practical. What's wrong with them being at the cheaper end of the range? Nearly £600 for a bag is not what many people would call cheap. It may not be fancy and very feminine but I have other bags for when I want that look. I don't want o look the same everyday.

thesaurusgirl Wed 26-Feb-14 19:05:03

I'm not a fan either. They're a bit five years ago without the design credentials to be a classic.

Mulberry prices in recent years make me laugh now - they're priced to compete with the likes of LV Epi leather and Ferragamo but don't even come close to the same quality.

thesaurusgirl Wed 26-Feb-14 19:08:47

Are you looking for a cross-shoulder bag? What about the Laurence bag from Jaegar? I've seen it in the flesh and it's excellent quality for the price.

Or do you specifically want the utility look? If so, one of the Cambridge Satchel duffles is worth a look?

If you want the luxe treat of a designer bag, for the same price as you could have something nicer from Smythson.

forbreakfast Wed 26-Feb-14 19:16:30

The Anthonys were £295 approx three years ago or so. They're still, even with the price increase to £495, the cheapest (I mean relatively speaking, when compared to a Bayswater or similar) bag Mulberry sell. I don't know if that's why they're so common.

forbreakfast Wed 26-Feb-14 19:17:17

And the quality of Mulberry has plummeted, in my opinion.

thesaurusgirl Wed 26-Feb-14 19:19:33

Mimi Berry bags are made in Manchester. A girl in the office has one and I covet it daily.

Might this one be a possibility?

thesaurusgirl Wed 26-Feb-14 19:31:42

Another cross-body bag, this time by Michael Kors. Very well designed inside and there are other colours, though NAP only has it in this orange and in black.

TwinkleSparkleBling Wed 26-Feb-14 19:52:04

I have a small one in dark brown. TBH I find it a bit small but I do take 2 sippy cups, a nappy, purse and mobile in itgrin

I find I use my Seth in oak much more as it's bigger. I also use my Daria as a cross body and that's quite roomy. I want an oversize Alexa which I could pack full of junk

LadyMaryLikesCake Wed 26-Feb-14 19:56:44

Mine's ink and soft leather. I bought it about 4 years ago when it was in the sale, so was £200 instead of close to three. I wouldn't buy one now, £500 is far too much.

The coating on the joins around the side (where the leather is stitched together) peels off, just to warn you.

Stepawayfromthezebras Wed 26-Feb-14 20:04:31

I know most people don't like them but I'm a big fan of the man bag for ladies. Gucci and LV do some nice ones which look similar to the Anthony but are a bit different. And they're cheaper than the women's lines. Also Longchamp have some lovely leather cross body bags for a lot cheaper than Mulberry

Gorgeous ladies Longchamp

Black leather Longchamp with a silver hardware toggle

Sod it, the whole Longchamp cross body line

I'm not actually answering the question that you asked but I do love a cross body bag me

annaban Wed 26-Feb-14 20:07:41

I adore Mulberry and have bought a few over the years, but I would have to agree with some other posters re: the ridiculous price hikes of late - totally unjustified!!

What about chloe, and in particular for the style / size you are after...

Dancergirl Wed 26-Feb-14 20:09:02

Thanks theasuars. They look a bit small.

What I like about the Mulberry is that it's roomy and sits well on your body. Neat looking.

I would welcome any other suggestions that fits the bill!

thesaurusgirl Wed 26-Feb-14 20:14:00

Cross body bags do tend to be on the small side, I think because they're not so comfortable if you load them up with lots of stuff.

But if it's that size you're looking for, I would look at men's bags, particularly at Coach and again at Mimi Berry.

If you have won the lottery tonight, have a look at the Evelyne and Jypsiere bags from Hermes wink.

Dancergirl Wed 26-Feb-14 20:14:46

I don't really like that shape annaban

But you're talking. Love the veau folonne one.

Dancergirl Wed 26-Feb-14 20:16:31

That Longchamp one is 27 x 28cm, I think that's about the same as the large Antony..?

These suggestions are fab, thanks all, keep them coming!

bialystockandbloom Wed 26-Feb-14 20:19:41

Yes, agree about unjustified price hike for Mulberry. DP and I exchanged a fair few Mulberry bags/wallets for birthdays and Christmas some years ago but ridiculous prices now. Also, nice leather and style, but many of them don't have enough inside pockets or compartments compared to other brands. Maybe that's changed though, I haven't had a new Mulberry bag for a few years.

Stepawayfromthezebras Wed 26-Feb-14 20:20:01

grin @ thesaurusgirl! My first stop after a lottery win is going to be an Evelyne in olive green!

annaban Wed 26-Feb-14 20:25:50
Stevie77 Wed 26-Feb-14 20:30:46

OP, look at Michael Kors. I have a cross body one which is no longer made but like the new Weston. Quite a few of the styles have a short and a long strap so you can wear both on your shoulder and across the body, which I quite like. There are a number of outlets in the UK, there's one at Cheshire Oaks for example.

IMHO, I do like Mulberrys but they've become a bit of a thing to have by those with fashion herd mentality purely due to the brand name and feel their cost now is unjustified so would personally not have one.

thesaurusgirl Wed 26-Feb-14 20:37:00

You may need to tread carefully with the Longchamps as they have also adopted the step-down in quality/step-up in price business model.

I have a Roseau tote from 15 years ago and it is infinitely better leather than the one used for the current range. I was in the shop the other day and was shocked at the decline.

Dancergirl Wed 26-Feb-14 20:38:48

Thanks I'll look.

It's not that I want a particular brand, I'm not really into labels as such...I just want a cross body bag that's not too piddly small yet sits comfortably.

I just might have a look at Bicester village...

CheeseStrawWars Wed 26-Feb-14 20:44:40

For a moment, reading only the title, I genuinely thought this was a Baby Names thread.

I buy bags that I like not worried about the make. A bag I bought as I did not want to pay for small Antony is medium Radley Grosvenor - cross body , several pockets, sits nicely andi know a lot of people sneer at Radley on here. Doesn't bother me, I like the bag smile

Dancergirl Thu 27-Feb-14 13:02:56

I am home from my visit to Bicester!

In Mulberry, they only had the small size Anthony in a not nice muddy brown colour (not chocolate), it was indeed £315. They said they v rarely get the larger ones in.

carrielou I tried the Radley Grosvenor, I quite liked it. They only had strange colours though.

Another possibility was a Michael Kors bag a bit like this one:

It seemed to sit quite nicely.

But after all that, I still prefer the Mulberry one, it's a classic. But seeing as getting one from an outlet is pretty slim, I can either buy a new one <gulp> (although I do have £120 JL vouchers) or buy a second hand one on Ebay.

Dancergirl Thu 27-Feb-14 13:33:12

They've got loads on Ebay!

A question - how is the Seth different? Is it an older model?

mrsrhodgilbert Thu 27-Feb-14 13:38:48

If you have JL vouchers and can comfortably afford the rest then why not go for it? This style doesn't tend to go in the sales and, if recent prices continue, it's only going to get more expensive. Sounds like you have established its the style for you, it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks, but actually it's the style my DH likes the most. He as been well educated in Mulberry. I got mine for much less from the outlets, I think the prices have gone crazy, but you have a voucher so go for it. I'd always be wary of eBay, but that's because I have never used it.

I love mine, really pleased I got one and with JL vouchers pretty much same price you would pay on eBay?? My grosvenor bag is in burnt orange lovely for summer not that will prob ever use it now !!

annaban Thu 27-Feb-14 15:07:05

Might be worth getting in touch with the lovely lady at naughtypigin to see if she has one, or to see how often she gets them? 100% genuine and strictly vetted for quality... A much safer option than eBay in the circumstances?

Doyouthinktheysaurus Thu 27-Feb-14 16:48:20

I have the Seth in Oak, it's very heavy!

I don't use it all that much tbh because even with nothing in it seems to weigh a lot.

Other than the weight it's a great bag, just not as lovely and user friendly as the Antony IMO.

I'm really liking the Michael Kors bags, especially Selma in pink. Looks very nice, I wonder what the leather is like.......

mintymellons Fri 28-Feb-14 10:43:32

I have the large one in a sort of tan/ginger colour - it's lovely. Got mine from the outlet store a few years ago and it was about half price. I love the colour and have never seen anyone else with the same one!
It's a very versatile bag as others have said. Can look smart or casual and the large size holds a fair amount.
