do your boobs pass the "pencil test"?

ThatVikRinA22 Thu 10-Oct-13 01:47:18

there is a no bra wearing day coming up for breast cancer at work that day and would have someones eye out if id didnt wear a bra!

i never understood the pencil test thing. i thought id failed because i couldnt hold a pencil - but it seems that i got it the wrong way around.
im a 34 D. it just so happens that mine point forward instead of down - so pencil test is a no no for me - i cant hold them.

is this a good thing? my boobs apparently still point forwards instead of going narly 42 so am sort of counting this as a good thing! im about to have surgery on my stomach so i am guessing i will lose some weight and my boobs are always the first to go....

ExasperatedSigh Thu 10-Oct-13 02:12:16

It is a good thing. I could hold a fountain pen and mechanical pencil set under mine. In a presentation box.

No bra day sounds like a bit of a gift to perverts though hmm

ilikeFISH Thu 10-Oct-13 02:28:14

Exasperated I'm with you on both points!

Op congratulations it is indeed a good thing.

froubylou Thu 10-Oct-13 02:41:14

Could get a crayola caddy under mine. Hth!

Wishfulmakeupping Thu 10-Oct-13 03:03:42

One doesn't grin

Lifeisontheup Thu 10-Oct-13 05:55:06

I can but am not huge 34B. I'm 48 with three DC's all of whom I breastfed for a minimum of 9 months.

changeforthebetter Thu 10-Oct-13 05:59:53

no bra day shock shock shock shock shock shock

I could fit my pc under mine.

I will not be participating in Norks Akimbo Day! grin

Oblomov Thu 10-Oct-13 06:03:32

Not headed south? How have you managed that? Mine have passed Lands End, I think!!

RobinSparkles Thu 10-Oct-13 06:10:12

Pfft! No!

Not even when I was 14 sad. I tried. Although, on the bright side, they've stayed exactly the same since then.

But no bra day? No chance, not even for charity.

tumbletumble Thu 10-Oct-13 06:21:58

Mine are 36E. I challenge you to find a woman with size E boobs and 3 breastfed DC who passes the pencil test. I think mine are relatively perky but they could still hold several pencils!

However I see the OP is a D, so not exactly small-breasted herself. Impressed!

cupcake78 Thu 10-Oct-13 06:24:56

38 E, you must be joking grin

PuddingAndHotMilk Thu 10-Oct-13 06:28:58

No bra day?! What fresh hell is that?! Thought up by pervs somewhere... As a 32FF I can hold WHSmiths whole stationery display and would NOT be going braless for any purpose! I am proud of my Niels but they need to be tethered in public!!

Also, doesn't going braless add to the pencil holding 'problem' confused

PuddingAndHotMilk Thu 10-Oct-13 06:29:34

JollyScaryGiant Thu 10-Oct-13 06:35:24

The no bra day is a facebook invention. It's not supported by any cancer charities.

Just checked and I can hold my kindle under mine. In its case.

JollyScaryGiant Thu 10-Oct-13 06:35:46

I'm in my 20s too.

Bunbaker Thu 10-Oct-13 06:40:27

I am 54, BF DD for 6 months and would pass the pencil test with flying colours. But that is because I am a 32B and would look like a boy without a bra sad

coffeewineandchocolate Thu 10-Oct-13 06:42:20

32gg not a chance. I could lose ds in them! I shall be doing my bit for society and keeping mine on!

jasminerose Thu 10-Oct-13 06:46:28

Im same as you. Im a 30dd and mine just go out not down.

AwkwardSquad Thu 10-Oct-13 06:47:22

Just spent an idle few moments tucking random items under my boobs to test their storage qualities... So far, pencil, paintbrush, specs case and packet of Night Nurse (not all at the same time), but not the iPad.

'Go bra-less' day? Stroll on.

Pachacuti Thu 10-Oct-13 06:49:15

I don't think mine have ever passed the pencil test since I acquired them several decades ago.

And there isn't a no bra wearing day coming up "for breast cancer awareness" any more than posting cryptic nudge-nudge-wink-wink statuses on Facebook does anything for breast cancer awareness [curmudgeon].

marriedinwhiteisback Thu 10-Oct-13 06:50:54

I could 25 years ago! I most certainly can't now. My 36DD's would be most put out wink.

Ihatemytoes Thu 10-Oct-13 06:54:44

32DD, 46 years old, 2 BF DC, and yes they pass. But 32dd isn't that big.

SundaySimmons Thu 10-Oct-13 07:28:26

I have similar boobs to you op, I am a 34c and my boobs are round shape with no droop and I am in my very late forties.

I know breastfeeding for some makes larger boobs less full over time but I was lucky as I was a 32a before having children and I breastfed my son for a year then my daughter for two and a half years, went up a dress size to a size 10 which is better as I was skinny before and my boobs have retained their fullness.

I often used to not wear a bra and only wear one now because at my age it's not appropriate to see the outline of a nipple under clothing, but I wonder if not wearing a bra has strengthened muscle in keeping them upright!

Genetics play a big part and my mother has similar, high, round bibs and her mother was Malaysian and very, very petite and had the figure of a young girl all her life.

TallulahBetty Thu 10-Oct-13 07:30:49

No way envy 34F/G here and fail miserably.

MrsMaryCooper Thu 10-Oct-13 07:30:59

scarlet76 Thu 10-Oct-13 07:35:06

30C here - can hold none of the aforementioned items. They go out rather than down but really no more than a handful there ;-)
I run a lot so wear a sports bra often. I do have odd days when I wear a fitted vest under my clothes instead of a bra.

celestialsquirrels Thu 10-Oct-13 07:37:51

I have never understood the pencil test either. I don't have any underside of boob to hold one! They just go straight out and hold themselves up. 34c. I'm 44 and have had 4 kids so I guess I just have different shaped ones to most of the rest of the work.

I often don't wear a bra

ThePuffyShirt Thu 10-Oct-13 07:39:50

32dd and definitely pass the test as I have no droop.

I think it's because I had no boobs until I had children.

Cat98 Thu 10-Oct-13 07:41:00

I'm the same - mine point forwards, are 34c and definitely can't hold a pencil. I guess I'm lucky.. I do have scarring on one nipple from horrendous bfing experience though!

Lizzabadger Thu 10-Oct-13 07:44:26

30FF and never past it. Just tried and I pass the iPad test though!

Lizzabadger Thu 10-Oct-13 07:44:45

Passed not past

IcedTeaOneSugar Thu 10-Oct-13 07:45:32

If I'm cold yes, If I'm hot no.

No bra day, jog on......

I will not be participating in Norks Akimbo Day!

^ This has made me laugh aloud grin

At a south facing 32G that can probably hold weights never mind pencils, nor will I!

lubeybooby Thu 10-Oct-13 07:46:48

38GG/H and can hold an entire rainforest under one.

I've never been able to hold a pencil there.

I'm a 32D and sometimes go braless.

maresedotes Thu 10-Oct-13 07:52:10

I've read the thread and I don't understand the pencil test! What is it? I am a 36F.

Back in the olden days, the theory was that if you couldn't hold a pencil in place by putting it under your breasts, then they were small/firm enough not to need a bra!

Now read all replies again grin

My vile ex once told me it meant I had 'saggy boobs' because I wouldn't pass the test, but his ex did?!

I was 22 at the time, size ten and 34E. It made me paranoid

I am size 14 now with 34F boobs so certainly won't be partaking in no bra day grin

Left boob can, right boob cannot.
DH is staring at me in confusion asking "what has Mumsnet got you doing, now?"
I think the penis beaker convo this morning is giving him a certain, impression of here grin

PlayedThePinkOboe Thu 10-Oct-13 08:57:19

I'm a G cup. The day I pass the pencil test is the day I receive my Nobel Physics Award for defying the laws of gravity - and it's been this way since I was 12 years old.

I am quietly confident I can hold a pencil case under them though.

CelticPromise Thu 10-Oct-13 08:59:13

30HH and would never have passed it since I was about 12.

Incidentally, I used to think I was a 36DD (thanks M&S!) and wore crappy badly fitting bras. I expect it didn't help.

maresedotes Thu 10-Oct-13 08:59:57

Thank you marriednotdead Have done the test and, as a 36F, I'm just trying to retrieve it.

MrsLettuce Thu 10-Oct-13 09:01:02

Me too! Mine have never passed the pencil test, as soon as there was anything worth the name of 'breast' there was significant under bust storage ability.

I can grin

34DD, 2 years of bf-ing and they're still perky and pointing the right way.
Let's ignore that the remote control could get lost in my belly rolls shock

ubik Thu 10-Oct-13 09:02:43

Ha, ha.

Got up this morning and DP is squinting at Twitter going 'what is this penis beaker thing?' He looked quite worried.

I can fit a multitude of pencils and a spare cheese sandwich under mine.

Am horrified by the radical feminists burning bras in the 70s - I love my bra, I am a 32E.

MrsOakenshield Thu 10-Oct-13 09:04:26

even at school I failed the pencil test, my boobs have headed south from the outset.

ChippingInNeedsSleepAndCoffee Thu 10-Oct-13 09:06:18

I am large breasted - until I lost bit of weight earlier in the year I could pass the pencil test, but I lost some of the weight from my boobs so they're 'softer' (ahem, yes, less firm) than before, so the pencil is staying there. A bit of a bugger, but small price to pay.

I can't see how any of us going bra-less is going to help cancer charitied one bit - mine will be tethered as normal smile

SalmonellaDeGhoul Thu 10-Oct-13 09:07:09

I could hold a penis beaker with mine.

Amrapaali Thu 10-Oct-13 09:08:31

I am going to call my breasts Neils from today. Sounds a bit dirty....

Salbertina Thu 10-Oct-13 09:08:54

"A long, long time ago, I can still remember when..."

...They used to be pert hmm

Sindarella Thu 10-Oct-13 09:30:10

I'd not heard if this pencil test. I am 28, 36 B with two BF children.
I'm off to raid dc pencil case....

NoMoreMadCatLady Thu 10-Oct-13 09:32:50

Pencil? I could fit a branch of Paperchase under each one.

Sindarella Thu 10-Oct-13 09:33:41

I couldn't hold a biro (does that count)

Must be because i have small boobs as they are defiantly not firm! grin

Mumof3girlys Thu 10-Oct-13 09:37:20

I passed the pencil test...... But then I do have implants! I was a 32aa had implants when second was 6 months old taking me to a 32d, had one more child 2 years later and there exactly the same round and firm like a 18 year old!

Deathbyladybirds Thu 10-Oct-13 09:39:53

Fuck that. I'd fail the pencil case test, let alone the pencil test.

Salbertina Thu 10-Oct-13 09:45:53

Mumof3- you're seriously making me consider uplift or something. Want nice boobs again! Is that greedy for a 40-something? Should gravity just do its evil work?

Thants Thu 10-Oct-13 09:46:52

Bigger boobs will hold things under them. I'm a G so hold a lot!
It's not a good or bad thing whether you can or not, you should prob know if you have big or small boobs confused

SummerScone Thu 10-Oct-13 09:47:13

Either that "no bra" day was devised by a show-off wanting to flaunt their implants or by a man. I don't even answer the door without a bra on!

And I seem to remember Victoria Wood saying she could fit a whole branch of WH Smiths under hers grin

notso Thu 10-Oct-13 09:48:47

I can hold a roll of wrapping paper!
I hate my saggy old knockers, breast feeding has not been kind to them.

Thants Thu 10-Oct-13 09:48:48

Salbertina. Please don't risk your life for boobs. Yours are fine the way they are! Implants are not like real breasts at all so you don't look like you did when younger you look like someone with implants.

Salbertina Thu 10-Oct-13 09:50:41

Thants, you're right but -still a big part of me is vain do wonder. Uplift less radical, more natural, surely?

heidihole Thu 10-Oct-13 09:51:21

no bra day!! at work!! christ.

I could hold everyone on this threads pencils under mine.

mignonette Thu 10-Oct-13 09:56:33

Still pass the pencil test after BF x 2 children (don't hate me). I have medium sized breasts.

sonlypuppyfat Thu 10-Oct-13 09:56:57

A small branch of WHSmith would fit comfortably under mine.

PuddingAndHotMilk Thu 10-Oct-13 10:02:31

ROAR at Awkward attempting to hold her iPad might have to try that later

UriGHOULer Thu 10-Oct-13 10:04:37

Yes, when I'm lying down!

But seriously, have you nowhere to keep your pencil?

MummyPigsFatTummy Thu 10-Oct-13 10:11:38

I am a 34H and used to have to check DD's airways regularly when I was bfing. They stick out so far I once managed to smuggle beers into a festival under them when wearing a loose shirt.

They were disappointingly warm afterwards though.

MrsWedgeAntilles Thu 10-Oct-13 10:15:45

No bra day? No bra day? No flipping way day! As an E cup breast feeder I can both tie the girls in a knot and and a bow and if it wasn't for my timely discovery of Bravissimo I'd be able to toss them over my shoulder like a regimental soldier.
I think my boobs might eat pencils grin

I'm a 34 c/d. 5 children, 3 of them breastfed for over a year. Mine are lacking volume in the top half, but I couldn't hold anything under them! They just go outwards, not down. I'm only 30 though.

MrsWedgeAntilles Thu 10-Oct-13 10:20:28

Salbertina have you been for a proper bra fitting? Mine were like spaniels' ears until I got into the right bra and now they point proudly forth (at least when I've got a bra on).
There was a bra fitting thread on here which told you how to measure yourself properly, let me see if I can find it for you.

Amrapaali Thu 10-Oct-13 10:20:34

MrsWedge thats quite a picture you paint.... grin

Salbertina Thu 10-Oct-13 10:28:30

Thanks, Mrs, that would be fab! They're ok when encased in a bra just not otherwise. But horribly shrunken, slightly wrinkly cleavage shockhmm. Maybe i need a body-stocking? grin

heymetoo Thu 10-Oct-13 10:31:02

MrsWedge grin

Mumof3girlys Thu 10-Oct-13 10:36:27

Salbertina I was 26 when I had mine done, 33 now I had nothing though!!!! Even with my first 2 prgancies nothing changed, didn't even have milk come in! Had implants year later had third child and don't sure what they disturbed but my god on day 4 I looked like Jordan! Was leaking everywhere for a couple of days!

Implants are a lot more common than you think, 70% of my friends have them...... Hmmm maybe that's because we are all vain and and go to get lengths to keep the bodies we had before children.

I personally have not heard any horror stories from anyone I know with them but it is major surgery and not a decision to be taken lightly xxx

Mumof3girlys Thu 10-Oct-13 10:40:55

Also in reply to some of the comments yes if you have huge round implants then they do look fake, but if you get a good surgeon (mine refused to put anything to big in, he mostly does reconstructive for cancer patients) and implants that are in proportion to your size then they can look amazing!

Mine are a 32d and where they are not huge sticking out front, they are just round and full, people don't actually even know I have implants unless I tell them! X

piratecat Thu 10-Oct-13 10:42:38

ExasperatedSigh, that has made me laugh ! 'In a presentation box'

noddyholder Thu 10-Oct-13 10:44:58

God no not even with my bra ON!

Salbertina Thu 10-Oct-13 10:49:01

Thanks, Mum smile

lurkingaround Thu 10-Oct-13 10:55:37

PMSL at this thread! And now have discovered the penis-dunking thread. I am having an hilarious morning!!! <house a total tip>

Jeez WHO on earth thought of a no-bra day. Had to be a man. What a nightmare. No way.

28G and pencil? Snort!!

VenusDeWillendorf Thu 10-Oct-13 11:03:36

Mine sagged like deflated baloons after breastfeeding, now rather large 30GGs. They still point forward and up, but there's a lot of squashy massiveness to them. I guess I could fit a tribe of Neanderthals under mine as a rain porch, if they were caught out without their umbrellas.

I think all these VIZ no bras days are all very nudge nudge wink wink as well. Having said that I don't think I could heave mine into a wheelbarrow just yet.

Calabria Thu 10-Oct-13 11:14:04

Mine pass the test if I stand upright with my shoulders back. 38DD and I'm over 50 [preen].

Sadly I cannot say the same for my belly...

SorrelForbes Thu 10-Oct-13 11:18:53

30GG and more than able to hold up copious amounts of stationery.

Because I just can't help myself, has everyone posted on here read the Bra Guru Guide about measuring yourself? I'd put money on a lot of you not actually being a 34C/36B!

LegoCaltrops Thu 10-Oct-13 11:21:32

I have teeny breasts if I'm not wearing a bra, so do pass the test. However according to intervention threads on MN, I've recently discovered I am a 30DD/E. Which I can fill easily. The pencil test is clearly bollocks.

Amrapaali Thu 10-Oct-13 11:23:12

Do you think I can pass the test if I lift my arms up? That will hoik my Niels up... Hmmmm. But I need someone to place the pencil there and I am alone now.

Can I use DD's giant foam pencil? That's sure to fall off, right?

Thants Thu 10-Oct-13 11:25:50

Some of you are either lying or are wearing the wrong bra size!

Thants Thu 10-Oct-13 11:31:13

Mumof3girlys you need new friends.
Salbertina uplifts are usually combined with implants and are a much riskier op. Either way you are mutilating your body for no real benefit. Boobs are boobs there is no better or worse! Getting properly measured and getting good quality bras is a very good plan smile

mysticminstrel Thu 10-Oct-13 11:33:19

32E and mine never have.

My arse is extremely pert though

<clutches at straws>

lurkingaround Thu 10-Oct-13 11:39:03

I bet if we were men the title of this thread would be:

I can hold an iPad under my boobs. Beat that!!

I'd trip myself up if went bra-less

MrsWedgeAntilles Thu 10-Oct-13 12:07:46

Salb Here it is:

Sorry it took so long, there are in the region of 95 million bra fitting threads on MN grin

Try this method, its amazing, it really will change your life. I did the measurement and wandered about in a daze for a few days muttering to myself that it couldn't possibly be true. I then went to Bravissimo armed with the measurements, came out with the first two bras that have ever fitted me properly and for the rest of the day was functionally just a great big cheesy grin and 2 amazing boobs grin
I look thinner, my posture's much better, I've got a cleavage (which took me completely by suprise, I thought that bit of my lady kit was lost down the back of the sofa forevermore) and my boobs aren't as sore when I've got PMT.
The only thing slightly not great is that because I'd always worn the bra of least resistance in the past I wasn't quite ready for the breaking in effect that came with the underwires in the new size but it only took a day or so for them to be entirely comfortable.

Salbertina Thu 10-Oct-13 12:11:08

Thank you kindly, Mrs! Shall read that for when I'm next near a decent bra shop.

MrsWedgeAntilles Thu 10-Oct-13 12:12:03

I am rolling on the ground laughing at some of these.
I've created this mental image of tens of little Neanderthals sheltering from the rain, drinking beer and fiddling on laptops while the lady in question just goes serenely about her business.

haha no way. I am all for supporting breast cancer awareness, having lost friends to the disease, but no way will I be going without a bra. I'm a 34g and even in nightwear I wear those vest with the built in 'shelf' for support.

Thelovecats Thu 10-Oct-13 13:58:12

Err no, have never been able to pass the pencil test. sorrel I am showing that link to anyone that will look smile Have you seen this daily mail gem today- things isle this are so misleading to women who don't think they could possibly be above a dd cup because that's so huge hmm here, and don't even get me started on the fit of these bras!

fromparistoberlin Thu 10-Oct-13 14:19:19

"there is a no bra wearing day coming up for breast cancer awareness

right, so how the fuck will that help woman suffering with BC???? honestly! tosh

bollocks, and bad bad OP for the stealth board for your weirdly perky tits!

ThatVikRinA22 Thu 10-Oct-13 14:21:40

woo! 4 pages!

i wont be dazzling anyone with my norks either - i could get away with no bra but would horribly, erm, exposed! i did indeed see this no bra thing on facebook...i very much doubt women will be complying!

some of the pencil test answers had me chortling! i should take pics for prosperity...only knowing me i would lose my phone. best not eh....

as it happens i have quite a pert arse too - it seems that the bits of me that stick out are quite rounded!

Hell no, I will never attend a workplace braless. I answer the door to the postman and that scares the poor man enough! And yup, whole of my childminding husbands craft cupboard could be carried under mine (30HH)

BillyBanter Thu 10-Oct-13 14:29:25

40F 44 and I can not hold a pencil under them, providing I'm standing with good posture.

If I don't make the effort to stand properly then I can hold a pencil under them.

JollyScaryGiant Thu 10-Oct-13 15:20:23

Provided I'm standing on my head I can't hold a pencil under mine wink

SignoraStronza Thu 10-Oct-13 18:06:40

Oh yesgrin . My breasts are the only part of my body not destroyed by pregnancy (and I've breastfed dcs for a total of 3 years 9 months and counting). Come back to me after dc3 though.

COCKadoodledooo Thu 10-Oct-13 18:17:18

I can hold a rolling pin under mine blush

pocketandsweet Thu 10-Oct-13 18:20:11

I am also only ever calling them my Niels from now on!
