Can these boots be worn with a dress and look good? I am 36 5'9" tall and a size 12 if it helps!

I apologise if my links don't work. I am hopeless on this iPad. I'm looking for boots to go with dresses and thick black tights for a night out. I'm thinking of this dress with them..

Hideous or nice?

AndTwoBits Wed 02-Oct-13 21:10:22

Oh bugger, they don't work do they.. One day I will master links. One day.

BetsyBidwell Wed 02-Oct-13 21:14:17

Just click the convert links button

MrsWolowitz Wed 02-Oct-13 21:48:40

Love the boots, the dress is a bit meh.

AndTwoBits Wed 02-Oct-13 21:54:32

Ok thank you for your honest opinion. Would those boots go with other dresses of a similar style do you think? With tights?

bumperella Wed 02-Oct-13 22:31:41

Personally, I really like the dress. I've an unreasonable bias against ankle-boots, think is an '80's childhood-related issue.

AndTwoBits Wed 02-Oct-13 22:39:40

I just thought the dress was bright and so bit of a change for me. I always wear black on a night out. Which is rare! No idea how to wear it tho. I love the boots but they could be a very expensive mistake.

beepoff Wed 02-Oct-13 22:44:24

Like them both and think they go well but there are lots of ( cheaper) other black ankle boots out there if you're not sure.

AndTwoBits Wed 02-Oct-13 22:46:40

Ok thanks beepoff. I might try the dress on tomorrow before worrying about the shoes. I have 3 weeks to put myself together.

jackstini Wed 02-Oct-13 22:48:13

Love the dress!
Not so fussed about the boots

tethersend Thu 03-Oct-13 00:02:33

Option? Object!

I need to go to bed grin

MerylStrop Thu 03-Oct-13 00:09:57

i like the dress,
the boots are fugly and expensive. i like ankle boots but those have an orthopaedic air - they will look too try-hard trendy or frumpy
there isn't any black in the dress, so another colour would be better, a deep burgundy red or dark blue (lots of good blue boots about, try kurt geiger or dune black). tights to go with. or bare legs.
heels would also work
love those ash silver boots, but not with the dress

BetsyBidwell Thu 03-Oct-13 02:09:17

Like both

LeoandBoosmum Thu 03-Oct-13 02:49:16

I'm another one who likes the dress but not the boots. If you want ankle boots to go with that dress, I'd suggest something less clumpy, something along these lines:

BetsyBidwell Thu 03-Oct-13 03:07:57

Hobbs ones are dull. Old fashioned. Stick to yours

garlicvampire Thu 03-Oct-13 03:33:08

If you're buying these items specifically to wear together, I agree that blue boots will work better. Stick with your slightly clumpy style preference for the boots. It's more contemporary and will give an edge to the prettiness of your dress. I've seen some gorgeous teal boots & shoe-boots about this year.

At 5'9" and size 12, the world's your oyster fashion-wise! Because you could look good in anything, I think you're right to make a bit of a statement with your outfit smile

God. The hush puppies. No

garlicvampire Thu 03-Oct-13 04:18:14

Really, you hate them? I talk myself out of buying them every other day grin

garlicvampire Thu 03-Oct-13 04:23:15

... but thinking about it, they would look stupid with a mini dress. I bow to Betsy.

I like the Hush Puppy boots. But I really hate ankle boots with dresses, to me it just looks wrong, wrong, wrong. No idea why though.

Ifancyashandy Thu 03-Oct-13 06:36:41

LOVE the Cos boots. Dress is ok. Shape of dress goes with boots but not the colour - too grey and patterned and not enough black.

Hate the Hush Puppy boots - they are very wrong. The Hobbs ones are just very boring and dated.

AndTwoBits Thu 03-Oct-13 07:59:18

Thank you for your input, really appreciate it. As much as I love fly London, I've loads of pairs, I was thinking of a bit more glam for my night out. I just never dress up any more! I'm going out out, not out! Head wrecked!might go into cos ans see what they suggest. I do love cos, their clothes just work on me.

garlicvampire Thu 03-Oct-13 10:13:36

Ooh, let us know what you choose!

jackstini Thu 03-Oct-13 11:12:22

I know these are really cheap! - but love them in the blue or teal

jackstini Thu 03-Oct-13 11:14:30
PrimalLass Thu 03-Oct-13 11:16:11

I love the boots (but not any of the other pairs posted here). Whether they go with the dress or not depends on how wide they are at the ankle once on.

Somethingyesterday Thu 03-Oct-13 11:25:26

I love Cos - and wonder if you couldn't find a fiercer dress? But if you insist on the dress then perhaps these boots might be worth considering?

Or these?

Twinklestein Thu 03-Oct-13 11:35:11

I think a colourful dress is a good idea, but that particular dress looks like a bad trip to me...

Not a fan of ankle boots, but at 5'9 you can definitely get away with them. I don't love the ones in the OP but they're more stylish than any of the alternatives posted...

garlicvampire Thu 03-Oct-13 12:52:42

Jackstini - everything 5 pounds!!! Good grief! A thousand thanks! Well, five thanks wink This may change my life slightly ...

garlicvampire Thu 03-Oct-13 12:54:27

The blue Stories boots are nice, and 'safe' enough to be versatile.

bunnymother Thu 03-Oct-13 13:34:25

I think the dress is gorgeous. And my favourite boots thr have been linked to are the Hobbs Ria ones. Some of the others are too clumpy.

bunnymother Thu 03-Oct-13 13:34:54

bunnymother Thu 03-Oct-13 13:35:50

Bloody phone... I wouldn't do the other Stories one as I don't think mid calf works. On the other ankle boot thread, someone linked to some nice teal coloured ones.

garlicvampire Thu 03-Oct-13 13:41:51

But Fly are so lovely to wear smile

And we don't all want to look like high-class hookers Bond girls in pointy heels!

BuggedByJake Thu 03-Oct-13 13:46:03

Yes to both. Such a change to see someone linking to something that's actually stylish on here. S&B threads are usually full of links to dullsville.

BuggedByJake Thu 03-Oct-13 13:48:18

Shoes for £5 FFS sad

garlicvampire Thu 03-Oct-13 13:54:24

Jake, my first thought was "sad" too. My second thought was "I'm on benefits, this is only 2 days' food instead of 20 ..."

fizzoclock Thu 03-Oct-13 13:59:38

I think you have a great look in mind, might need colour tweaking like pp have said with the blue of the dress and the black of the boots.

The second other stories pair might work...don't do the mid calf as it will play havoc with your legs IMHO (cuts them at the widest point of the lower leg generally)!

If you had a black clutch/bag or black leather biker or tux jacket you could probably pull the boots together with the dress?

These boots might work? I don't love them but might be better colour wise? Teal or I love these for a hit of silver here

fizzoclock Thu 03-Oct-13 14:01:14

or these are gorgeous and really versatile!

BuggedByJake Thu 03-Oct-13 14:08:37

Sorry garlic I didn't mean to offend blush

garlicvampire Thu 03-Oct-13 14:25:01

No worries, Jake smile I shop virtually for the things I'd like to buy, but trawl the bottom for things I can! Got it down to a fine art.

garlicvampire Thu 03-Oct-13 14:27:45

The third Zara one's good, fizz! And in the style of OP's first choice ... Poor OP, your head must be swimming with boots now!

AndTwoBits Thu 03-Oct-13 14:40:35

Thank you girls, you're very kind to find suggestions for me. I adore those blue and other stories boots, they are fab. I do have a really old black leather biker jacket I bought 20 years ago that is still going strong, so maybe that would tie in with black tights and boots as fizz o'clock suggests. Didn't have time to run into cos today, it'll be sat at this rate. But I really appreciate the ideas. Garlic vampire, head defo swimming, but the responses has got me all excited for my night out now. I guess the dress is a bit marmitey going by the comments. I keep going back to it tho, do I must be in the love camp.

AndTwoBits Thu 03-Oct-13 14:42:35

I have this dress already. Just to throw another idea into the mix. Would this dress work with the boots in my op better, with it being grey fleck?

Somethingyesterday Thu 03-Oct-13 14:51:59

It's a bit dull for a night out....

Something more like this? as it's Christmas soon.

AndTwoBits Thu 03-Oct-13 15:00:14

I actually quite like that dress somethingyesterday. Be nice with my red hair.. The second cos dress in the grey is better in real life, honestly. Almost silvery. And would save me buying a dress. Hmm

AndTwoBits Thu 03-Oct-13 15:09:42

I like this too. With tan tights (if this isn't naff) and black ankle boots?

Somethingyesterday Thu 03-Oct-13 15:14:10

How about

this skirt with a corresponding top?

If you're planning to be out a lot separates might be more versatile....

Somethingyesterday Thu 03-Oct-13 15:16:31

....Tan tights......?

<Ominous silence.>

AndTwoBits Thu 03-Oct-13 15:22:47

Ok ok! Black thick tights it is so. I wouldn't go bare legged (pale and a bit chubby) and every dress is modelled with bare legs. Just thought maybe!

AndTwoBits Thu 03-Oct-13 15:24:11

Sorry I'm not ready for skirts, I am barely able to cope with dresses and they are more straight forward!

AndTwoBits Thu 03-Oct-13 15:50:36

Ok my last attempt at style.
This dress:

With thick black tights, and:
These shoes

Heads melted. This my last try of the day!

LeoandBoosmum Thu 03-Oct-13 17:21:24

I guess I'm getting old, Betsy... That, or 'one woman's dull is another woman's classic'... smile
Maybe it's just me but I think putting clumpy boots with such a pretty dress looks daft... It reminds me of that Morecambe and Wise sketch where they put work boots on Shirley Bassey... Clumpy shoes, for me, just look completely at odds with a beautiful, feminine dress. Just my two penneth...

feelinlucky Thu 03-Oct-13 17:30:16

Op, good taste, great combi, love it but I'm a big Cos fan.

noddyholder Thu 03-Oct-13 17:34:08

Love the dress. I bought the silver stories boots and they are v nice

MyBoilsAreFab Thu 03-Oct-13 17:54:03

I think your grey dress with the Cos boots, biker jacket, some really chunky silver jewellery, red hair and red lippie (or a strong colour you suit) would rock!

RainierWolfcastle Thu 03-Oct-13 18:14:22

that blue thing looks like a parachute

AndTwoBits Thu 03-Oct-13 18:53:47

Ok cool. I am going to end my suffering now, wear the grey dress with my biker jacket, red lippy and black tights n boots. Will try on the cos boots in shop. If they don't suit, and to be honest they're pricey anyway, at least I only have the boots to stress over. Thanks for all your opinions. They were very mixed but appreciate them all.

garlicvampire Thu 03-Oct-13 19:02:31

Agreed with Boils and you, TwoBits! It's a good strong look smile Have fun.

AndTwoBits Thu 03-Oct-13 19:05:20

Ah thanks garlicvampire!

MarianForrester Thu 03-Oct-13 23:07:27

I think that will look great.

But really really like those silver boots tethersend linked to..... I want them, why did I click on this thread..?

tethersend Sun 06-Oct-13 09:30:47

AndTwoBits- did you see? Your first floral Cos dress was listed in the Guardian Style section as a must-have yesterday. here Trust yourself!

tethersend Sun 06-Oct-13 09:31:50

Have often wondered if someone at the guardian readsS&B, as they they often feature things which have been discussed on here...

MyBoilsAreFab Sun 06-Oct-13 19:02:16

Ooh, shall we mess with their heads?

AndTwoBits Sun 06-Oct-13 20:45:45

Well now, I shall doubt myself no more! That's given me a boost, as I'm only recently getting back into fashion, now my baby sleeps and I have the energy! Might just have to buy the blooming dress now!
