Is there ANYTHING nice in Next?

I'm in dire need of some new clothes & have a Next account that I can use. I've not bought anything from there for ages at it all just seemed a bit meh last time I looked.

Is there anything decent in there? In particular I'm looking for black leggings with tummy covering, skinny jeans (high rise if poss) and perhaps some ankle boots & going out tops. I'm a 10/12 (well 10 in Next sizing)

Went in for skinny jeans yesterday and tried on their legging jeans - ACE! Just a perfectly fitting skinny, proper denim feel, first ones that don't give me a weird bum/camel toe grin

They've got some good fur trimmed brown ankle boots too.

Rest - on a very quick skim - bit bleugh.

AgathaF Fri 27-Sep-13 16:10:23

I've had Next jeans in the past. They go baggy really quickly. I wouldn't waste money on them again.

I have a £30 voucher and there's NOTHING I want to spend it on. It's all grey.

squoosh Fri 27-Sep-13 16:18:22

No.

justkeeponsmiling Fri 27-Sep-13 16:19:25

I also had a £25 voucher and couldn't find anything I liked there last week, not one thing! Maybe online is better than in store?? I ended up spending it on DCs for a change sad

higgle Fri 27-Sep-13 16:19:44

I used to like Next jeans as 10 petite was a perfect fit for me. They are now made of very thin fabric with so much stretch that it doesn't feel like real denim - and much bigger. I don't mind being an 8 but it is just vanity sizing. I have bought some much nicer ones at Sainsburys (classic rise boyfriends) for about 1/2 the price.

HadALittleFaith Fri 27-Sep-13 16:27:34

I have £115 (!) in gift vouchers to spend...some of them I've had for a year

BetsyBidwell Fri 27-Sep-13 16:29:59

I got some cool ankle booots to wear with skirts... voila

pootlebug Fri 27-Sep-13 16:34:23

The last time I got given Next gift vouchers I spent them on stuff the kids needed and spent the money elsewhere instead.

RollerCola Fri 27-Sep-13 17:17:20

Not looking too promising hmm although those ankle boots are quite nice. I've got 2 pairs of Next high-waisted jeans & they've just gone a funny shape. The straight legged ones bend at the knees and just look silly.

Anyone else rate the jeggings?

SundaySimmons Fri 27-Sep-13 17:22:57

No.

Orangeanddemons Fri 27-Sep-13 17:23:55

Ugh, Next. So drab and plastic and boring. They only ever seem to sell grey, black, blush and shit yellow. With the odd bit of forest green. Yuk yuk. No where else has this drab dull colour palette....and the styling...well there isn't any really. Just trashy looking

SundaySimmons Fri 27-Sep-13 17:25:42

Next are crap.

dexter73 Fri 27-Sep-13 17:29:15

I have that jumper too Betsy!! I also bought a navy textured jacket in the sale for £14 that DMB40 has.

Orangeanddemons Fri 27-Sep-13 17:29:21

Oh, and mink...wtf is that colour? Do they have a massive job lot of mink shit that they need to sell year after year?

dexter73 Fri 27-Sep-13 17:32:14
GoofyIsACow Fri 27-Sep-13 17:33:45

I always feel a bit massproduced and mumsy in NEXT, but sometimes needs must! end of month account card spend

bishboschone Fri 27-Sep-13 17:51:27

As a rule I don't like next womens clothing at all but I did think they had some nice jeans and jumpers yesterday when I went to get ds some clothes. Nice soft coated jean if you fancy some of them.

TalkativeJim Fri 27-Sep-13 17:55:11

There is nothing nice in Next. Ever.

They must work quite hard at it.

Jeans are shite I bought coloured skinnies I was able to wear once before they bagged. I spend vouchers on sunglasses or home stuff

cocolepew Fri 27-Sep-13 17:59:59

I have their relaxed skinny jeans and love them.

ConfusedDotty Fri 27-Sep-13 18:00:15

No nothing unless you are a 3 year old.

<awkward silence after cocolepew's revelation>

Wuxiapian Fri 27-Sep-13 18:01:42

I only shop in Next for my DSs.

BetsyBidwell Fri 27-Sep-13 18:06:44

gah I think foolish to write off a whole shop.
dont go INTO the shop - just look online

MyBoysAreFab Fri 27-Sep-13 18:08:16

I have their relaxed skinny jeans too, and I also love them.

I used to buy all my jeans from Next, they were always perfect length for me. No more and also the sizes are ridiculously big all of a sudden. The relaxed skinnies were the only ones that fitted me. They are really comfy and flattering.

I get a lot of stuff for the DS' in the sale but I never get any tops in the sale for me. Have some quite nice house stuff just now.

MrsBennetsEldest Fri 27-Sep-13 18:10:02

No, nothing good in Next. High rise jeans turn into baggy mum jeans.

plentyofsoap Fri 27-Sep-13 18:28:01

I have ordered a v neck black jumper from their autum collection. Its not fitted as I wanted a baggy ish one. It was 28 pound. I am pregnant so I wanted one for after the birth. This is my defence.

SundaySimmons Fri 27-Sep-13 18:44:54

Just to add to my intense dislike of Next, some of the models wearing the knitwear are sporting sunglasses. Presumably so as to not be recognised wearing such hideous outfits.

BetsyBidwell Fri 27-Sep-13 18:45:16

Lol at Angel wings

home stuff is the HOME of twigs n pebbly shit

AGree a lot of next is shit but they carry a HUGE range. INcluding the odd blush shade mentioned below.

To dismiss all of it , though, is a bit blinkered.

dexter73 Fri 27-Sep-13 18:47:17

The thing is Sunday, you could post a grim piece of clothing from any shop so it isn't just next that sell horrible clothes. Just to back up my point - Horrible and expensive!

SundaySimmons Fri 27-Sep-13 18:49:23

"Wow! You look great in that".

www.next.co.uk/G4946s1#874188G49

Said no one ever.

SundaySimmons Fri 27-Sep-13 18:51:51

Dexter, that monstrosity looks like you went out out and got your mum to babysit and when you got back you discovered that grandma had got your favourite and most expensive jumper and told the children, "mummy won't mind if you decorate this old thing!"

BetsyBidwell Fri 27-Sep-13 18:52:18
dexter73 Fri 27-Sep-13 19:29:29

Do you know what, my mum would have done exactly that and then been surprised that I wasn't pleased with the lovely jumper. She wouldn't have done it with one of her own jumpers though (unresolved mother issues!).

I went in next the other week and was a bit disoriented wondering why the men's was on the ground floor.

Then I realised it was actually the women's, all grey, brown and denim. UGH!!

FellatioNelson Fri 27-Sep-13 19:52:22

No. Not for the last ten years, anyway.

littlemisswise Fri 27-Sep-13 20:00:09

I bought a nice top in there the other week, it's leopard print but instead of being black and white, or beige and brown it is beige and navy. It's gone from the website though which is a shame because it is cut well, slightly longer at the back to cover your bum a bit.

farrowandbawl Fri 27-Sep-13 20:49:42

No, not for years.

catanddog Fri 27-Sep-13 21:04:57

I am not a next fan at all, and went in today to look for vest tops, but came away with these shaping high waisted skinnies.....
www.next.co.uk/g49110s5
Haven't bought anything in Next ever, and worry that these will sag in time, but have got them on now and am impressed. Am a pear shaped sz8.

frankietwospots Fri 27-Sep-13 22:19:37

I highly recommend the PU front panel leggings. They are amazing. Just haven't figured out WTF to wear on my feet.

Erm, I quite like Next for the odd thing. I think I usually look quite nice. Where do people shop?

BetsyBidwell Sat 28-Sep-13 07:41:35

he's cute, but DD2 might laugh at me

But, yes there is too much grey grey makes my skin look dull and highlights the grey in my hair and I look 10 years older - V bad at 45

noddyholder Sat 28-Sep-13 09:25:30

I went with dp to one near us as he gets his work trousers there. I saw a couple of things a blue fluffy baggy jumper which was nice and a tartan top. I left with 2 lampshades!

bettsiom Sat 28-Sep-13 14:37:22

Next jeans do go baggy quickly and there is something up with the arse on them or the pockets that can make a good bum look bad.

LeoandBoosmum Sat 28-Sep-13 15:05:51

I'm amazed at how similar Next's clothes are to M&S's - that's not a compliment!

scarlet76 Sat 28-Sep-13 16:09:15

I used to buy a couple of things from the petite range each season but this year nothing. Sizing is insane with even some of the size 6 stuff too large for my petite frame. The clothes, frankly, all cheap and ugly.
I rather like their kids clothes for DC though.

MyBoysAreFab Sat 28-Sep-13 16:32:07

My sister bought the dress that Betsy linked to upthread - the black jewelled cuff one, and it is absolutely lovely on, really flattering. When I think about it I have a couple of nice Next dresses that I wear to work - jersey quite casual ones. But I still rarely get anything these days. Agree about the petite range scarlet it is weird - I am only 5'2" and their petite jeans are far too long on me!

HotCrossBunsForAll Sat 28-Sep-13 16:39:49

I've got some high waisted shorts from there that are excellent, but there's nothing else I rate there at the moment.

ColdFusion Sat 28-Sep-13 16:41:17

I am just back from Next. I bought two suits and a top.

LostMarbles99 Sun 29-Sep-13 11:40:53

I don't get all the hatred towards Next! It's like any shop, some of it is awful and some of it is nice.

I'm wearing this blue/black dress with these fab black courts and I feel good! I actually got the shoes in LKB but you can get them in Next also!

does not want to hear any bad things about Next as its all I can afford since ds arrived

smile

practicality Sun 29-Sep-13 11:53:53

I bought a duffle coat in navy which is marvellously comfortable, some multi buckle ankle boots which are really versatile and I can walk miles in them and a knitted dress in navy.

The coat sizes large but is really warm, light and flattering. coat

The boots appeal to my gothic side. boots

The dress is a very good shape for apples. dress

The dress needs to be sized down from your normal size and there is no difference between the petite and norm in terms of sizing.

dexter73 Sun 29-Sep-13 12:03:15

LostMarbles99 - I don't get it either. You are right, some is awful, some not.

This thread made me think of an article in the Daily Mash called 'Overreaction now the Standard Reaction'. You can't just not particularly like Next and not be that keen on their clothes, you have to HATE them, NONE of their clothes are nice, you INTENSELY dislike them, their clothes are HIDEOUS etc.

I just can't get that level of hatred worked up about a clothes shop!

LostMarbles99 Sun 29-Sep-13 12:08:35

Exactly dexter and I think perhaps some people like to have a bandwagon to jump on!

Maybe we should start a nice things in Next thread!

I also love the baby clothes- I would have been lost without Next for ds's clothes!

Some of the home items are perhaps a bit hmm but its not like people are going to kit their entire house straight out of the Next directory?! It's the same with the clothes, mayor just pick and choose the nice bits and pieces!

PinkSippyCup Sun 29-Sep-13 12:19:04

Practicality, I have that coat too and have had lots of nice compliments about!

I usually find things I like in there. Nice casual jumpers etc. It's just an average high street shop.

practicality Sun 29-Sep-13 12:19:36

Their high rise / high waisted jeans are the best shape for apples. They are so flattering and last ages. If they contain 2% stretch than go down a size as they do give, if 1 % than normal size should do.

They do great boots too if you have a wide calf but go for the designs where they have an elasticated panel as they will shape better to the leg rather than their wider fit ones.

squoosh Sun 29-Sep-13 12:22:20

It isn't a bandwagon it's recognising that for lots of people Next holds no appeal

Next = acres of drab shite

almapudden Sun 29-Sep-13 12:59:43

I saw some nice jumpers in the window a while back so went in to have a closer look. They were all incredibly boxily cut and made from synthetic fabric. I was quite disappointed.

Orangeanddemons Sun 29-Sep-13 16:51:08

It's the drabness that gets me. I cannot remember the last time Next had anything in that suited me. I look shit in black, grey and any shade of turd, flesh, and mustard which is all they seem to sell. Even if I found something, I hate the fabrics they use. They don't even attempt to use cotton or wool anymore

BetsyBidwell Sun 29-Sep-13 17:00:24

The stores are truly dated. Our local one was redone and looked the same afterwards.
the out of town ones are soulless temples to polyester

I bought this for my hols. Loved it -got lots of compliments. It's polyester though, but was cheap and quite lovely style.
So yes, I think there is the odd thing in there which is great. But it's not my first port of call.

practicality Sun 29-Sep-13 17:07:50

I shop online. I agree the shops are poor. Most of the good stuff is online. They are selling a nice navy cashmere oranges and some wool jumpers too.
wool

Like all shops at the moment you have to filter out a lot of crap but there are good things to be found.

impty Sun 29-Sep-13 17:08:13

The last thing I bought from Next was an 'oh cock an interview tomorrow' suit when I got it confirmed at 4.30pm was at work until 5.30 and it was next or tescos.

The rest is a weird combination of frumpy and slutty as one.

goingmadinthecountry Sun 29-Sep-13 19:47:47

No. Best thing I ever had from there was a bit of a grope with a lovely looking guy in their first ever catalogue.

OldRoan Sun 29-Sep-13 19:50:25

Can you buy from the 'brands at next' section of the website? Includes Hobbs! Joules, Lipsy, LK Bennett...

Orangeanddemons Sun 29-Sep-13 20:10:28

Frumpy and slutty sums it up perfectly.

practicality Sun 29-Sep-13 20:15:56

I am neither of he above! Are the items I have shown frumpy or slutty?

I think not...

Orangeanddemons Sun 29-Sep-13 20:51:59

Well that denim jumper looks a bit trashy to me...and surely bird prints are past it by now

practicality Sun 29-Sep-13 21:08:46

You are quite disagreeable.

I don't follow fashion and couldn't give a rats. I am all about style. If I like it, it works for me.....

scarlet76 Sun 29-Sep-13 22:27:13

Not jumping on any bandwaggon here.
Like I say, I've had some nice bits in the past. I'm disappointed at the moment by the drop in quality and the designs. It's all well and good thinking people can size down but when you are a size 6 there is no size down! I'm generally a 6-8 in Topshop.
The kids stuff on the other hand is fab. Just ordered DD some more bits.

BanoffeeSplitz Sun 29-Sep-13 23:01:50

I've just realised from reading this thread that Next's vanity sizing is probably the reason I've written their clothes off as frumpy & badly fitting in the past. I just used to try on clothes in my usual size, plus maybe one up or down, & wonder why everything hung so badly.

I liked the blue & black checked dress someone linked to earlier.

squoosh Mon 30-Sep-13 01:57:17

Frumpsville.

Down With Next!

dexter73 Mon 30-Sep-13 17:35:56

Just popping back in quickly to say that the navy textured jacket has just arrived and is fab! It does amazing things to my waist and makes it look teeny, I think it is because of the little cutaways at the waist. Love it and can't wait to wear it. Total and utter bargain for £14!
Oh and I don't look like a frump or a slut.

IWillOnlyEatBeans Mon 30-Sep-13 18:01:09

I don't have strong feelings about Next. But I did try on their denim leggings and did not like them at all! Would definitely avoid.

I think they had some fairly nice coats in - parka type ones.

Hi,
Back to report. The black jumper is very flattering in a semi slouchy way. This jumper feels nice too and is long enough to suit wearing with skinnies or a tube skirt. Really good buy.

The slouchy bag is gorgeous. Roomy, butter soft leather and a great size. I settled for the black.

The suede brogues are great if you are wider of foot yet are tapered enough so as to not look clunky.

The scarf is beautiful, lovely soft material and very lovely pattern.

Very pleased with these items.

Orangeanddemons Mon 30-Sep-13 18:15:31

I'm not being disagreeable, it's what I think. That jumper would have been OK without the 3 random studs on the arms. They are what make it look trashy

MorrisZapp Mon 30-Sep-13 18:22:33

I love grey, black and brown. Those who don't, what colours do you tend to wear?

I pointed it out ref the material not the style in answer to a point you made.It may not be your taste but could look really nice on someone else. I haven't bought that as I like a more monochrome look.

By the way they aren't studs.

cocolepew Mon 30-Sep-13 20:09:20

I had on their relaxed skinny jeans and a black and white stripey T-shirt with a black satin edging around the neck and a zip up the back. I wasn't slutty or frumpy thanks.

frankietwospots Mon 30-Sep-13 20:26:21

That soft V neck jumper looks really nice SteppedOnaFrog - tempted by the grey one to wear with my PU front panel leggings. What's the sizing like?

Size down and it's still slouchy enough for leggings x

Starts off as a "Next is shit" diatribe, then it's all "ooh, that's nice, this is lovely too, such a bargain...."

Me, I like a bit of Next, particularly for work. Not everything is nice, and they do have the odd "off" season, but I have several Next items in my wardrobe that I have worn and worn and worn.

squoosh Mon 30-Sep-13 23:05:16

Oooooh it's going to be an Apple and Oranges showdown. wink

applecrumbleandcream Mon 30-Sep-13 23:08:54

Next is a reasonably priced high street store that is catering to the whole family in one store They sell some nice things and also some shit things...same as anywhere else so no need to go overboard about how crap it is. If you don't like it, then don't go in. Simple really eh?

vjg13 Tue 01-Oct-13 11:39:22

I think all shops seem to have a lot of polyester things now, even higher end shops and they charge a corresponding higher price. I like some of the jumpers linked to and may buy online.

I did see some scary shoes in the Xmas brochure though, with cut out parts with net curtain in, can't find to link sadly.

BerryLellow Tue 01-Oct-13 11:52:37

The problem with Next, is they put all their shittiest things in the shops and somehow never have a good range of sizes.

Same with their childrenswear - all the 'I'm a cheeky monkey' and 'Mummy's little pole dancer' crapola ends up in there when you just want something relatively plain.

I have some lovely things from the online catalogue though
