Ok, I know we all love a good M&S bashing thread but I think they have really excelled themselves with this coat...

shock It's just awful! The model looks embarrassed.

Marylou2 Wed 18-Sep-13 16:41:22

DH is staring at me as I'm making a honking noise and have tea coming down my nose (classy chick). There ought to be some sort of warning on the website.

Beeyump Wed 18-Sep-13 16:42:11

How can they make a beautiful woman look...wonky?

onlysettleforbutterflies Wed 18-Sep-13 16:43:26

Horrific and the models expression is priceless.

runningonwillpower Wed 18-Sep-13 16:43:47

At £189 you wouldn't even buy it for a fancy dress party - I'm thinking medieval rat catcher.

And it's £189!

Methe Wed 18-Sep-13 16:44:19

There's another thread kicking around somewhere about this most magnificent coat. I think it was called something like 'how to look like a beaver' or something.

They really have excelled themselves,

spookyskeleton Wed 18-Sep-13 16:44:22

Yep, I am not sure that any amount of money would make me want to model that wink

kotinka Wed 18-Sep-13 16:45:29

Message withdrawn at poster's request.

BIWI Wed 18-Sep-13 16:46:57

I came on to this thread to defend them, as I've picked up some really nice stuff very recently - but actually, that coat is truly, magnificently shit! Who ever thought that would be a good idea?! grin

I have also noticed, though, that the website seems to have an uncanny knack of making anything that they sell look atrocious.

Longdistance Wed 18-Sep-13 16:52:15

Are their designers drunk when they think 'hmm, this will fly off the shelves, and make us lots of money'??

Seriously, who designs this crap??

FrancesFarmer Wed 18-Sep-13 17:15:51

It looks as if it was made by fur and leather fetishists.

LilyBossom Wed 18-Sep-13 17:17:35

I think her head was photoshopped on afterwards - I don't think they would be able to persuade anyone to wear that and let them photograph them.

Tortington Wed 18-Sep-13 17:18:39

sheep in a wolefs clothing

HandMini Wed 18-Sep-13 17:22:34

It is indeed extremely speziale.

Onesleeptillwembley Wed 18-Sep-13 17:23:14

I can just see that hanging in the South African house from yesterday not on a hook, just as a trophy.

ShatnersBassoon Wed 18-Sep-13 17:24:29

It's like something from Narnia, some sort of womanstoat homunculus.

Earthymama Wed 18-Sep-13 17:25:30

I was in M&S yesterday and thought of MN as I actually found some things I liked!
(Jumpers and, dreadful word, jeggings in the Indigo section)

Why would you think that jerkin (medieval, indeed!) would make anyone look wonderful?

It's as though they commission/design all the good stuff in one go fuelled by caffeine.. Instead of stopping, recovering, resting and starting again, they plough on regardless through the night adding a cocktail of drugs to keep them going, and then collapse, waking hours later, lifting their drooling faces from their desks in horror but unable to cancel the monstrosities they have created. blushblush

spookyskeleton Wed 18-Sep-13 18:04:31

Earthymama - I think you have got it there, only someone on drugs would ever create something so ugly!!!

I do have some reasonable stuff from M&S but is so difficult to find the gems amongst all the shit!!

sophiedaal Wed 18-Sep-13 18:07:08

And THAT is what Orville looked like when he got old and grey.

MacaYoniandCheese Wed 18-Sep-13 18:11:41

That's a coat for an aging rockstar's wife. I can see Jo Wood wearing it, or maybe Trinny.

MarshaBrady Wed 18-Sep-13 18:12:48

Oh my very speciale.

SundaySimmons Wed 18-Sep-13 18:22:09
PrincessKitKat Wed 18-Sep-13 18:25:54

grin - donkey tabbard!

BoulevardOfBrokenSleep Wed 18-Sep-13 18:46:55

Game Of Thrones re-enactment perhaps? It would be very useful beyond the Wall...

Belindaearl2 Wed 18-Sep-13 20:53:26

£189 Yeti tennis

WoW! in both looks and price.

£19 in Asda maybe wink

RaisingArizona Wed 18-Sep-13 21:48:35

It look's like Fred Flinstone's outfit. What on EARTH is their bloody problem! It's beyond ridiculous.

Continuing the speziale animale theme, why pick one animal print when you can mash them all up together? Bodycon for extra senzualeness.

CanadianJohn Thu 19-Sep-13 05:03:13

Same model. Either photoshop, or all the rest had too much self-respect.

spookyskeleton Thu 19-Sep-13 07:50:01

Wow that dress is awful shock

The model really did get the short straw didn't she?

bootsycollins Thu 19-Sep-13 07:51:31

It looks like something out of Planet of the Apes! grin

Rooners Thu 19-Sep-13 07:58:48

don't buy this

It looks innocent, pretty even. Inside is a little heart label and pink stripy lining. It is all over tiny heart motifs.

Oh my days it's going back.

Phaedra11 Thu 19-Sep-13 07:59:39

I don't think the designers have any respect for M&S customers. They're probably told to design something for women of a certain age and come up with something they think their mum might like, or aunt, or neighbour. I suspected Ben de Lisi of the same, when they took over Principles.

VestaCurry Thu 19-Sep-13 08:01:39

If it was actually a onesie, I could persuade myself to buy it (I feel the cold something terrible).9

ExcuseTypos Thu 19-Sep-13 08:14:35

I have no words!

Because I get a bit tired of the M&S bashing on here, I'm linking to something I bought recently. Not sure the website pictures won't make it look hideous in everyone else's eyes, but this IS a nice raincoat:

miffybun73 Thu 19-Sep-13 08:25:28

Do you think that anyone will buy it??!

Bet it will be reduced to £18 within a couple of weeks and still won't sell.

miffybun73 Thu 19-Sep-13 08:27:38
BIWI Thu 19-Sep-13 08:38:19

There is some nice stuff in M&S at the moment. But you wouldn't know it from looking at their website.

nicename Thu 19-Sep-13 08:43:58

Oh wow. Just wow. Sheep costume anyone?

SparkyTGD Thu 19-Sep-13 08:45:20

My eyes! shock

I'm like BIWI and do like some M&S stuff, Limited Collection can be good.

But that is beyond hideous.

ExcuseTypos Thu 19-Sep-13 08:46:40

I agree BIWI. I go in for the food department and usually, walking through the women's clothes makes me feel rather dizzy and nauseous. All those swirly patterns and horrendous colour combinations.

It's not like that anymore. I've not had time for a good look at the clothes, but it's a much calmer place to walk through!

SparkyTGD Thu 19-Sep-13 08:48:45

I like this jumper

miffybun73 Thu 19-Sep-13 08:52:31

Oooh yes, nice jumper SparkyTGH

I think that the really awful stuff all seems to be Per Una/Per Una Speziale.

AthelstaneTheUnready Thu 19-Sep-13 09:01:52

According to the availability, someone who's a size 6 has already bought one.

I can't stop looking at it.

LineRunner Thu 19-Sep-13 09:11:53

"Someone who's a size 6 has already bought one"

That'll be Baldric.

clippityclop Thu 19-Sep-13 09:19:37

Or Sylvester.

Edithmark Thu 19-Sep-13 09:34:38

Nah, it's me that bought it. I'm all sorted for when my PFB is cast as chief sheep in this year's nativity. Oh yes.

gazzalw Thu 19-Sep-13 09:48:12

That coat is for mutton dressed as mutton.....

BerryLellow Thu 19-Sep-13 09:53:32

And they are calling it 'high octance glamour' confused

BerryLellow Thu 19-Sep-13 09:56:10

octane even blush

BrigitBigKnickers Thu 19-Sep-13 10:00:38

Mmmmm what every modern cave woman is wearing this season!

Pumpkintopf Thu 19-Sep-13 10:26:34

And THAT is what Orville looked like when he got old and grey.
^ grin

SubliminalMassaging Thu 19-Sep-13 10:29:54

That actually made me burst out laughing.

They are mad aren't they? I mean some of their stuff is really great, but by God the bad stuff is truly beyond awful.

sophiedaal Thu 19-Sep-13 11:33:58

Some of M&S offerings are so surreally bad - in the face of their much-publicised attempts to get better/listen to customers/pare down the ranges - that there has to be a secret explanation. I would suggest:

1. some sort of tax dodge involved unsold/unsaleable stock
2. fashion internships open only to children of influential shareholders
3. very dark design studios, due to lighting budget cuts
4. drugs in the Very Chocolately Biscuits
5. an elaborate alien joke ("Watch how the earthlings puzzle over the nylon tabard!! Hahahahah! They're trying it on... with those leather-look skeggings! hahahah!" etc)

BIWI Thu 19-Sep-13 11:47:36

I think you have it spot on, sophiedaal! grin

DuelingFanjo Thu 19-Sep-13 11:51:23

omg, I LOVE the donkey tabard. The ebay one.

nicename Thu 19-Sep-13 12:34:32

I like prints with wee animals but this is going a bit too far with all the fur and animal print.

Bet Lynch chic.

LaQueenForADay Thu 19-Sep-13 12:38:13

In that photo on the opening post, the model looks like an extra from The Croods.

Why would anyone want to dress like a prehistoric cave woman? Why? Why?

Have the Per Una designers been at the crystal meth again hmm

LaQueenForADay Thu 19-Sep-13 12:40:50

nicename my Great Auntie had a faux rug, that looked exactly like that dress. She used to display it proudly on the wall above her small, indoor terrapin pond.

[yes, her house was a homage to late 60s Jungle-esque Vs. Bond Villain Abode]

ChunkyPickle Thu 19-Sep-13 12:45:56

They're all at it:

I couldn't stop giggling when I saw that in Asda the other day - I had to call DP over to see it too and he ran away embarrassed at the hysterical pregnant lady.

LaQueenForADay Thu 19-Sep-13 12:47:17

WTAF? Fur epulets hmm

BIWI Thu 19-Sep-13 12:47:40

That's ridiculous!

Furball Thu 19-Sep-13 19:21:55

Gosh - it makes me want to sing remember your a womble grin

ViviDeBeauvoir Thu 19-Sep-13 19:27:14

Rooners - did you not see in the description of that coat?
'Button fastening with concealed feature' it would seem that glorious pattern you're describing is the 'concealed feature' grin

God I love these threads

Kamchatka Thu 19-Sep-13 19:29:18

Oh nice one Asda, a jumper with two fannies grin

ViviDeBeauvoir Thu 19-Sep-13 19:29:34

shock at that asda jumper.
What were they thinking?!
Presumably as it's priced at only £14 they couldn't afford to cover the whole thing in fur, so opted just for the shoulders?!

Zoe678 Thu 19-Sep-13 19:29:37

it looks like one of those cute bug costumes people put their children in at hallowe'en. It just needs antennae and it would be a beetle costume.

scripsi Thu 19-Sep-13 19:35:46

ha! at asda "elevate your knitwear" wtf!

notjustamummythankyou Thu 19-Sep-13 19:35:49

If you had cold nips, those furry shoulder things would look like eyebrows.

Could catch on.

LRDMaguliYaPomochTebeSRaboti Thu 19-Sep-13 19:37:26

Oh, I so want to put DH in the fur-shoulder jumper. It would make him look as if his beard magically continued for about a foot horizontally.

onlysettleforbutterflies Thu 19-Sep-13 20:16:57

A woman at work had that jumper on the other day, I must admit I did do a double take when she walked past.

Kamchatka Thu 19-Sep-13 20:21:10

Did you think "Why does that woman have two fannies on her shoulders?"

goodasitgets Thu 19-Sep-13 20:22:26

Maybe they are spare merkins? grin

LaQueenForADay Thu 19-Sep-13 20:49:32

Surely those fur patches would have looked better applied under the arms.

Voila...instant hairy pits.
