If you were in your 40s and going out 'clubbing' what would you wear?

(208 Posts)

I usually wear skinnies and high heels but am getting bored of it. I have decent legs but hate my norks.

If skinnies, are there any nice tops around? If not skinnies, what?

cece Fri 13-Sep-13 20:41:20

I was just going to come on and say skinnies and high heels... so watching with interest.

smile

CoteDAzur Fri 13-Sep-13 20:52:17

Try a dress?

But what KIND of dress, Cote? smile

iteminbaggingarea Fri 13-Sep-13 20:56:26

Wear what you feel great in. Skinnies short skirt whatever. What are norks? I would get me to Zara. A minidress that is the t shirt, silk sack type with heels.

Norks = boobs.

Never find anything I like in Zara, although love lots of it online.

Not sure I ever feel great in anything, tbh.

CoteDAzur Fri 13-Sep-13 21:02:00

Hard to say what kind of dress without knowing your body type & dress size smile

MikeLitoris Argentina Fri 13-Sep-13 21:06:02

Well I'm 30's and last time I went out clubning I wore a black flarey type skirt, black short sleeve lace top and nudey-beige cage shoes.

Black clutch with some bright 3d flowers on.

I like to think I looked good grin

MikeLitoris Argentina Fri 13-Sep-13 21:07:10

Clubbing obvz.

And reading that back it sounds rubbish.

ViviDeBeauvoir Fri 13-Sep-13 21:09:58

No idea of your colouring/size etc or if you hate your norms because they're huge or because they're tiny but I e just bought this
And this

Both look pretty good on - I'm mid-late 30s, size 10-12 with big boobs that I don't like on show, bit of a mum tum and pretty good legs.

What sort of stuff do you like/feel good in usually?

ViviDeBeauvoir Fri 13-Sep-13 21:10:49

Norms?! grin norks, obv.

MikeLitoris Argentina Fri 13-Sep-13 21:14:47

They are both lovely vivi

Thanks. I'm a 12. 32E. I like both ofthe 2 you linked to Viva, but they are the sort of thing I'd wear for work.

I hate looking 'tarty' and my norks make it easy for me to look both matronly and tarty combined. Not good!

The nicest things I've bought recently are:This and this but I don't see either of them as dancing items!

MooMinCow Fri 13-Sep-13 21:17:06

Dress or pencil skirt with shoe/ankle boots? I go out regularly with (younger) workmates and tbh there's no way I could wear what they do (disco pants, cropped tops or minuscule skater dresses)! I just wear something I feel comfy and confident in, machine washable (as someone is bound to spill a drink over you) and great statement jewellery and lots of makeup grin they tell me I "look hot for my age" (39) wink

SundaySimmons Fri 13-Sep-13 21:20:54

A hearing aid. sad

ViviDeBeauvoir Fri 13-Sep-13 21:21:15

Hmm yes, you're right, I would wear them to work too if I wasn't on maternity leave

It's really hard dressing big boobs especially for clubbing - I find I can make the frumpiest of outfits look 'tarty' just by virtue of their size.

Can you link to some styles you like? Or a look you think you'd like?

ViviDeBeauvoir Fri 13-Sep-13 21:22:52

Moomincow - I always get told I look good for my age because I always add on another 5 or 10 years wink

MooMinCow Fri 13-Sep-13 21:27:02

Vivi grin will remember that!

I like this but don't really like showing the tops of my arms. And I pretty much always wear a black dress, if I'm not wearing skinnies.

MikeLitoris Argentina Fri 13-Sep-13 21:33:20

I've got that dress remus and it is flattering on my belly but it is a bit see through.

LEMisdisappointed Fri 13-Sep-13 21:35:17

Ear plugs!

Agh -don't want see through!

MikeLitoris Argentina Fri 13-Sep-13 21:41:25

Its not really bad but I wouldn't wear a thong under it grin

I dont think it would fare well under fluorescent lights if you didnt have black underwear.

smile Might try it on, but it would be good to have something other than skinnies or a black dress.

AphraBehn Fri 13-Sep-13 22:04:08

I would one of those silky kimono type jackets with a camisole or vest top and cigarette trousers (because I don't wear skinnys).

AphraBehn Fri 13-Sep-13 22:08:30

How about that stripey skirt you linked to with a slouchy black silk t shirt and shoe boots?

daimbardiva Sat 14-Sep-13 10:06:11

Shorts and tights and heels?

Cigarette trousers = work clothes.

Stripey skirt and silk t-shirt = work.

Love shorts and tights, but not sure about on 40-something year old thighs.

Screwfox Sun 15-Sep-13 05:31:51

Well I wouldn't go bit of I had to it would be jeans. Think you're unnecessarily focused on what's work wear tbh

Roshbegosh Sun 15-Sep-13 05:56:20

Would want a burkha personally. No law against clubbing right into your 70's if that's what you want to do, but why??? The girls will say things like " aww, my mum has those and they look sweet" but hey if it's your thing knock yourself out.

Lavenderhoney Sun 15-Sep-13 06:46:42

Went for the first time in ages and wore a short shift dress in black lace with heels. Wish I'd kept my coat on, I just wanted to leave! So loud and when did people start punching the air whilst holding drinks?

Also I wasn't really comfortable until I had worked out my exit route in case of a firesmile so many people! see, too oldsmile

I used to love clubbing. And music festivals. I suppose I'd hate it now.

Screwfox Sun 15-Sep-13 07:02:17

I always hated them. There's a lot of pressure to like them. When I married I decided I wasn't pretending any more

CoteDAzur Sun 15-Sep-13 09:11:23

Remus - I think you need to clarify what kind of "clubbing" you have in mind.

Screwfox Sun 15-Sep-13 09:51:39

oh Cote! of COURSE!
Its her book club ;)

Screwfox Sun 15-Sep-13 09:51:48

..or Pony club

Pinupgirl Sun 15-Sep-13 10:36:05

No,no,no to skinnies and heels-its been done to death. I was in the big city last week and all the 40 something's women had on skinnies, floaty tops, stripper shoes and too much fake tan<shudders>

You sound like you have an amazing figure to me!-stop trying to hide the norks-you have to work with them-not against them!

I cant do links with I think a dress which shows a bit of your cleavage with very good shoes and bag would do you well.

Roshbegosh Sun 15-Sep-13 10:40:37

Maybe the twerking will be a struggle in jeans, if you hold on to the pole and just make sure the thong is covering the crucial bits you should be ok to join in still. Then no one will notice your boobs.

CoteDAzur Sun 15-Sep-13 10:51:26

Errm that's not what I meant.

Clubbing could mean thumping techno music in dark clubs with very casual clothing <thinks fondly back to Escape From Samsara nights at The Fridge> or it could mean something like Boujis. You would dress very differently for them.

Notfootball Sun 15-Sep-13 11:32:10

Early 40s here and went to a late bar with a dancefloor/DJ last night, I wore a pleather, above the knee pencil skirt and a loose-ish vest top with hemline studs and high heeled ankle boots plus a teal clutch. I looked good if I must say so myself! My usual attire is yours: skinnies, heels and nice top but I needed a change.

lifesgreatquestions Sun 15-Sep-13 11:43:42

I love that you still go so often that you need some new clothing ideas!

TaudrieTattoo Sun 15-Sep-13 11:44:32

My house.

happybubblebrain Sun 15-Sep-13 11:52:05

Last time I went clubbing in my late 30s (4 years ago) I wore a glitter dress and boots.

Wear something a bit comfy, especially on your feet.

Screwfox Sun 15-Sep-13 12:02:22

I was only kidding cote.

Screwfox Sun 15-Sep-13 12:02:53

I thought it was obvious

CoteDAzur Sun 15-Sep-13 12:20:14

Sorry screw, I just didn't want Remus to think I was making fun of her.

noddyholder Sun 15-Sep-13 12:26:09

God I think it's v difficult not to look muttony. I would prob wear dark tight skinnies turn ups ankle boots and a plain black t shirt No glittery swooshy tops they are loose women territory.

niceupthedance Sun 15-Sep-13 12:31:28

I still go out a lot and I'm 39.

I think low key is best with accessories.

Last time I went out I wore blue skinnies with red suede mid-heels, a thin grey t shirt with big hoop earrings and a chunky gold bracelet.

SparkyTGD Sun 15-Sep-13 12:33:18

I'd wear a silky or embellished top with skinnies & wedges, my legs are also my best feature. And some statement jewellery.

I like this, I like the slightly 'rock chick' style that some of the shops have in.

Screwfox Sun 15-Sep-13 12:42:52

Oh I am though. tickles remus

Pompbear Sun 15-Sep-13 12:54:43

Leather pencil skirt, show off your legs? Work-ish but with a bit if edginess? Ankle boots... Top??

Could be hot in a club though?!

Oh god, you've made me even more paranoid now.

The 'clubbing' usually means various bars and then ending somewhere with dancing, rather than Ibiza-esque or a club full of 18 year olds. I love dancing and spend enough time in the house, so all you people saying you'd rather be at home, I do that too - but I like going out dancing as well!

There's usually a mix of us, from super-skinny early twenties up to aged 50-ish and I am on the older side of middle age-wise, and the smaller size of middle, size wise,

If I wear skinnies and heels, I am never, ever orange and my shoes are not stripper-esque, just either black heels or black shoe-boots.

A black mini-ish dress would be the obvious alternative to skinnies, but I pretty much always wear black.

The shiny t-shirt linked to below is the sort of thing I quite like with skinnies on others, but would draw too much attention to my norks. I need v plain on top and then need to draw attention to my legs I think - but how to do that without looking slapper-ish?

Mummyoftheyear Sun 15-Sep-13 13:48:02

Whatever you love and that looks fab on you n makes you feel most confident. 40s are the new 30s

Mummy - I never feel confident!

Screwfox Sun 15-Sep-13 14:37:47

i was just thinking about this and was thinking a bodycon dress and a leather jacket on top
of course quite hot though...
You want a plain top? loose or close fitting?
i couldnt imagine a leather skirt in a hot bar/pub

#chafing

Screwfox Sun 15-Sep-13 14:38:04

what about a dark red stretch dress? maroon

Top can be loose or fitted, so long as it doesn't cling.

Maroon dress might work - any links? Would need sucker-in undies though!

what about a tube skirt
loose floaty vest thing and jackay?

I was just looking at and liking the 'Too Formal' one - what a coincidence! I wondered if the sheerness would = slapper though?

Don't like the weather girl one at all.

Love the 'tunic' and it would suit me - but it's about £100 too expensive. smile

Tube skirt, floaty vest and jacket = v v me - but I wear it to work.

Screwfox Sun 15-Sep-13 15:05:18

GET OVER THE WORK THING
grin

is this top a bit too Jayne Mcdonald?
www.mintvelvet.co.uk/black-double-layer-studded-top/new-in/mint-v/fcp-product/3234

Don't know who JM is. Top is nice, but tis the same old same old thing I wear with skinnies all the time. I want to get my legs out! smile

Screwfox Sun 15-Sep-13 15:12:30

Nope, still no idea who she is. I think her hair is bigger than my entire body!

Fallenangle Sun 15-Sep-13 15:16:02

I'm confused Remus, you rejected the shorts and tights idea on account of your thighs. How about wearing shorts or a short dress with black lace tights? They disguise the line of the slightly larger thigh.

MissDD1971 Sun 15-Sep-13 15:16:42

Last time I was out clubbing (think loud City bar after work) I wore a black and gold trim Zara batwing light knit top, pencil skirt and dark red suede boots with massive heel.

However after one Sambuca shot too many and the heels I tripped over a glass table, badly cut my hand but also broke two ribs. YOW.

Now, I'd wear black skinnies (H&M) with either a rock chick top (nice Top Shop bright pink roses top) or a floaty Top Shop vest top with chains at side. Also dresses are nice. Been clubbing in a lurex knit with black sequins sort of body con Top Shop dress and also other dresses. Depends where you go. An ex friend of mine varied what she wore from black or red shift dress from ASOS, to vest top with jeans and floral kimono. Heels are the way to go. But watch the shots!

PavlovtheCat Sun 15-Sep-13 15:17:37

60's style shift dress with wedges.

MissDD1971 Sun 15-Sep-13 15:18:48

oh also I have a nice black zipped playsuit (Top Shop again) looks nice with glossy tights, and i had some glittery office shoe/boot things.

Shorts are shorter than mini skirts (I don't go higher than just below mid thigh in a skirt), and draw more attention to thighs. My legs are decent and my thighs are okay. I'd only wear lace tights with a knee length pencil skirt, as I think they look tarty otherwise.

I might try some shorts with opaques. It's so hard to get it right - not matronly or worky but not tarty and/or muttonish.

PavlovtheCat Sun 15-Sep-13 15:21:59
MissDD1971 Sun 15-Sep-13 15:23:38

Pavlov that's really nice,very 60s and flattering.

PavlovtheCat Sun 15-Sep-13 15:24:35

or this i might buy this for myself.

Thanks, Pavlov. Not my sort of thing though - shift dresses are awful on my shape.

PavlovtheCat Sun 15-Sep-13 15:27:58

miss they are! I have three or four of this shape dress, in various colours and slightly different necklines. The style hides any lumps and bumps, and if worn with either wedges or heeled boots, adds some length to my short legs. I wear these type of dresses in the winter with boots, either heeled or biker style, or in the summer with wedges or sandals. I like them as I can wear them dressed down in the day, to look a bit groomed (even without make-up or hair done), and in the evening with full make-up, hair, nails etc to look wow.

PavlovtheCat Sun 15-Sep-13 15:28:31

Oh really OP? that's such a shame! I bet with the right shoes they would look awesome.

Love this but it is a) out of stock and b) another black dress!

Screwfox Sun 15-Sep-13 15:30:12

I dont like those dresses either.
SIgh

i got some shorts from Mango last winter as noddy encouraged me
kind of waxed look. i LOVED them, H said they were a bit Jayne macdonald.

Tempted by the jumpsuit though. smile

Screwfox Sun 15-Sep-13 15:39:42

Plastic shorts even more of a no than leather.

Screwfox Sun 15-Sep-13 15:40:38

I like that dress a lot. Print across norkage and high neck not a great combo though.

The thought of clubbing makes me wince. I am 43 and way too old.

I did end up in a hideous late night venue recently on a mums' night out (blerk). It was full of skinny jeans, sparkly tops, ham arms & nude shoes.

love that - its like that Phase eight dress we all got that time! Youd have to get it not too big on the top of youd look heryouage

Thanks Clackie. Pencil skirt too worky though, even in fake leather, especially with court shoes!

lurkingaround Sun 15-Sep-13 17:56:05

What about a jumpsuit and high heels? Is that off the Richter scale?

I have this very same issue, once a year every time I have a night out. I end up wearing a variation of the same ole ding dong. Tho I did buy a leather panelled dress last year, jeez it's a godsend. I have a friend with this. She is amazing in it. 40 next year. Prob 5'3, 5'4 at a push. Not for me, unfortunately. For you?

Thank you, Lurking but the idea of me in a jumpsuit fills me with horror. smile

lurkingaround Sun 15-Sep-13 18:37:45

grin Yes I know Remus! Filled me with horror too. And then I saw her in it and the horror changed to envy!

grin You'd see me in it and your horror would change to nausea.

AlaskaNebraska Sun 15-Sep-13 18:46:37

you silly cow remus grin

AlaskaNebraska Sun 15-Sep-13 18:46:46

( its me obvs)

Obvs it's you. smile But why am I a silly cow? I AM - but why are you telling me so? smile

Lurking with intent. Have first night out in 4 MONTHS on Thursday (NCT Girls' Night Out obv - shoot me now!) and given i haven't worn anything other than stretch jersey for a year and a half, I don't know what to wear. And also a stone lighter with J size bf boobs. Sadly still 5’ 3”. I look like I'm about to topple over any moment.

Am thinking skinny jeans (soz), black vest and kimono/waterfall style gauze jacket which is black and navy with elbow length sleeves. Hard to explain but quite nice on. Skims boobs, covers ham arms, shows flash of chest at front but not at the side.

AlaskaNebraska Sun 15-Sep-13 19:40:21

you slagging yourself off

AlaskaNebraska Sun 15-Sep-13 19:40:49

AlaskaNebraska Sun 15-Sep-13 19:44:00

AlaskaNebraska Sun 15-Sep-13 19:44:31

AlaskaNebraska Sun 15-Sep-13 19:45:21
AlaskaNebraska Sun 15-Sep-13 19:46:25

www.wallis.co.uk/en/wluk/product/clothing-265973/jackets-blazers-2181084/black-pu-collar-blazer-2222705?bi=1&ps=20

also matching black with black makes tits less obv.. then get huge earrings to detract?

Ahhh. Sorry.

I like my legs, my wrists and my ears - so an outfit to flatter those would be good! smile

Your outfit sounds fine, Button. Kimono shape makes me look a bit like a large lady trying to cover bingo wings (even though I haven't got terrible arms) but the plain black vest will give you a streamlined shape, so don't worry about the ship effect!

AlaskaNebraska Sun 15-Sep-13 19:49:34

what is that about her thighs though? a skirt?a dress? a tea towel?

It's a pair of shorts. I like the shape, but not the colour.

AlaskaNebraska Sun 15-Sep-13 19:51:28

shoes look a bit odd too.
I got a tuexdo type blazer in zara sale at xmas, only ordered it to get free P and P...

I need a new tux blazer. Will have a look in Zara, even though it makes me want to kill people, including myself.

Hmm, suspicion of waves splashing across the bow, I think. May need to rethink

AlaskaNebraska Sun 15-Sep-13 20:17:28

nope
YOU LOOK LOVELY

lol at waves

AlaskaNebraska Sun 15-Sep-13 20:17:46

are your jeans too long though?

VERY nice, Button.

Have (v short time only) put a picture on my profile of me in a black dress and biker jacket, which is the sort of thing I usually wear. Excuse the crappy hair etc and tell me what you think will suit me, please.

AlaskaNebraska Sun 15-Sep-13 20:26:41

it looks fine but a bit... kind of formal. I would say. is the dress very loose?

AlaskaNebraska Sun 15-Sep-13 20:27:06

The dress is a Westwood and is possibly a bit big. I don't like clingy stuff because of norkage.

If I wear skinnies, I tend to wear a loose-ish silk top.

AlaskaNebraska Sun 15-Sep-13 20:30:52

but it makes you look bigger than I think you are my darling!

dress def too big

Oh thanks! It's been sooo long, I don't know myself. I never thought I'd be one of those people. When do you get your life back, please?

Yes. Jeans are too long - story of my life - will sort 'em before Thursday or just wear long boots rather than heels

AlaskaNebraska Sun 15-Sep-13 20:31:34

i just roll them up if i want 7/8, normally inside.

Yes, it probably does tbh. It looks slinkier than that minus the biker though.

AlaskaNebraska Sun 15-Sep-13 20:35:00

i know exactly where you are coming from though . SIster always said/ says the same for me. thats why i find dresses impossible. to fit on thighs they make me look like Jessica Rabbit

That was quick I missed you while eating my chocolate buttons

I find going bigger doesn't always work to hide the boobs. Better to go with some cling but keep it partially covered up instead. Particularly if you're small, it can start to look a bit like something out of the dressing up box

Mmmmm chocolate buttons...

tanfastic Sun 15-Sep-13 20:41:46

I'm 40 and last time I went out to a posh bar (not nightclub admittedly) I wore a stretchy black tube midi dress with cap sleeves, very high red suede shoe boots and a little black jacket. Big gold chunky bangles and a clutch. If that helps.

AlaskaNebraska Sun 15-Sep-13 20:45:16

dress sounds lovely

Just found this I like.

AlaskaNebraska Sun 15-Sep-13 20:58:00

ooh ooh me too! get it! and not a huge size

AlaskaNebraska Sun 15-Sep-13 20:59:30

im looking hard.
are whistles big or small sizes?

Whistles dresses are usually a v bad shape for me - huge across the back but tight on norks. I like their skirts, which are quite true to size. Tops are enormous.

AlaskaNebraska Sun 15-Sep-13 21:01:19

Don't like the giraffe one - too loud.

Varya Sun 15-Sep-13 21:04:12

Was in Matalan recently and the counter staff told me they are online now and she implied you could order, not just view the items.

AlaskaNebraska Sun 15-Sep-13 21:05:14

yes youd need to be pretty gutsy

This would suit me and I'm short enough to wear it as a dress. Would be too hot though.

AlaskaNebraska Sun 15-Sep-13 21:32:06

LIKE klaxon

smile

I might try it on for evenings in the pub.

AlaskaNebraska Sun 15-Sep-13 21:36:42

reviews say its tight

Which should mean that a 12 will fit and not be too big!

noddyholder Mon 16-Sep-13 07:58:35

I like the shorts rather than the dresses. That body Con look is something ds mates all wear in an ironic 80 s way but on older I think a bit formal and mum at a Xmas do. The shorts with loose top v nice.

BetsyBidwell Mon 16-Sep-13 15:46:42

Linea weekend dress arrived today
just wrong - I think maybe too small, I got a M which was 12 - 14 but it lacked that " just thrown on" vibe

noddyholder Mon 16-Sep-13 15:59:47

I hate anything that doesn't look just thrown on in fact I think that could be the definition of mumsy

BetsyBidwell Mon 16-Sep-13 17:53:40

yes, i think you may have a point. I looked a bit parcelled up.
MIND YOU the alternative is remus wearing TOO BIG stuff * hard stare*

I'm going to try some shorts on, if I can find some that are not super-short.

Have worn super-clingy skirt to work today and have had many nice comments. smile

Shame about the dress.

BetsyBidwell Mon 16-Sep-13 17:56:14

it is

I looked to see if there was a L. nope

BetsyBidwell Mon 16-Sep-13 17:56:42

i have a matalan tube affair I am saving for colder weather. With the new boots ( see sep thread)

mysticminstrel Mon 16-Sep-13 17:57:52

I wore this clubbing recently: http://www.amazon.co.uk/French-Connection-Lovely-Lorine-Balsamic/dp/B008VE7R4E

If you're a 12 I'd go for a size 14 as it was one the small size (am also 32E and struggled with my boobs in the size 10).

It's a nice length and covers upper arms.

BetsyBidwell Mon 16-Sep-13 17:59:14

ROAR!!! at the models grumpy face

HOW pissed off does she look?!

mysticminstrel Mon 16-Sep-13 18:00:28

It looks really different on different models, I found.

looks better here

Ooh, she's scary. The dress is quite nice but not quite right for me, I think - mostly because of the little sleeves. No sleeves or three quarter work better for me.

BetsyBidwell Mon 16-Sep-13 18:01:24

i like it.

Oh remus me old mate.

2nd model MUCH better!

mysticminstrel Mon 16-Sep-13 18:03:02

<obviously I looked just like the second model. Oh yes>

But of course. smile
