Help me find a cocoon coat

I need a new winter coat, and I have always liked cocoon coats. Any colour, as long as it isn't black. I'd like it to have full-length sleeves, be no shorter than just above the knee and if at all possible, to have a collar. Any ideas, S & B gurus?

EldritchCleavage Thu 12-Sep-13 19:42:30

I forgot to say, budget is up to £300.

Ooh, thank you you lovely people.
They are all beautiful, though I fear the first one is probably too short (I will freeze to death in a mid-thigh coat I think). I keep saying I don't want red (never wear it) but that third one is calling to me. Decisions decisions.

I've found this: lovely, but red, and this. I like the teal colour, but does it look at bit 'old biddy' with that prim collar?

I like both but would avoid a one way zip as they can give/break at the bottom.

Go for buttons or a two way zip that can be undone at the bottom to allow more movement.

I like the coat from etsy - it's nice and simple which help to highlight the cut of the coat.

EldritchCleavage Fri 13-Sep-13 10:58:54

I think the etsy one is edge-to-edge, ie. no fastenings, which is not v warm, especially on windy days.

sweetmelody Fri 13-Sep-13 12:18:37

Ooh I was going to post a similar thread...

I totally covet that mink-coloured Jaeger one, but it is 'double-faced' or, like Eldritch says, edge-to-edge and so has no fastenings, nor lining for that matter.

Beautiful colour and shape, but just not practical as a main winter coat.

Anyone seen anything similar, particularly that colour which would make a change from my usual camel?

SundaySimmons Fri 13-Sep-13 12:24:26

I had an edge to edge coat years ago and overlapped the edges and sewed on large hook and eyes.

I'm also looking for a cocoon coat - in grey preferably. Haven't seen one though so can't help! There are some nice coats in Cos though, have you looked at those? see here

buttercrumble Fri 13-Sep-13 12:40:55

That Maggio one is beautiful

EldritchCleavage Fri 13-Sep-13 15:40:59

Aha, Sunday, I am pondering that now...

I saw the Cos ones, and there is a cocoon coat but very dark navy. I was hoping for something more jazzy colourwise.

here is a grey cocoon coat, though the sleeves are too short for my liking.

noddyholder Fri 13-Sep-13 15:57:03

this not strictly cocoon but friend has it and its lovely hers was tiny and it still fitted me and I am quite busty It s alovely shape on

SundaySimmons Fri 13-Sep-13 15:57:14

The red one is made to order so why don't you ask her if she can make you one that does up?

I love it!

love that toast one sunday

EldritchCleavage Sun 15-Sep-13 23:32:40

Tried [ this one]] on over the weekend. I looked rotund. I may have to rethink the whole cocoon coat concept. Bah.

EldritchCleavage Sun 15-Sep-13 23:33:24

Bollocks. link

snowlie Mon 16-Sep-13 06:52:52

I have my eye on the Zara one too Noddy I like this one in grey from French connection - I know not a cocoon coat but maybe worth a nose!

snowlie Mon 16-Sep-13 06:55:09

The Avoca coat makes the model look chunky. What body shape is best suited to this kind of coat?

SoupDragon Mon 16-Sep-13 07:11:28

The Etsy one does have a row of buttons on it but only overlaps by about an inch.

SundaySimmons Mon 16-Sep-13 09:59:39

The coat covers a multitude of upper body shapes but I don't think it would look right on thick/fat legs.

Sorry, linked already.

Will look again.

Trouble is, I'm beige coloured already. If I wore a coat the colour of that Jaeger one I'd look like a walking poo.

tethersend Mon 16-Sep-13 15:05:14

So have you changed your mind about a cocoon coat?

EldritchCleavage Mon 16-Sep-13 15:09:00

Trouble is, I'm in love with one that is too expensive and not available in my size. I can't get it out of my mind. It's ruining all other coats for me. It's this one.

Do you think if I emailed the company and was really really grovelly, they'd just send me one? It is last season's, after all.

tethersend Mon 16-Sep-13 15:13:02

Ah fuck, that is lovely.

Will try and find similar. What size are you?

EldritchCleavage Mon 16-Sep-13 15:19:36

You are very kind. I kiss you all over your face (as I say to my children).

tethersend Mon 16-Sep-13 15:21:34

Do that if I find something grin

As an aside, do you like this? it's maternity, but I'm just about to ebay one in a 16.

<sets the bar low>

EldritchCleavage Mon 16-Sep-13 15:34:53

I do like the maternity one and even the vintage one a bit. I need knee length and long sleeves to avoid freezing to death though.

EldritchCleavage Mon 16-Sep-13 16:53:35

this one is nice, for anyone who likes pink.

Not enough wool to be warm enough I think tethers.

tethersend Mon 16-Sep-13 17:11:18

Bollocks, it's out of stock, ignore.

tethersend Mon 16-Sep-13 17:21:11

too black?

What colour are you after BTW?

Could you put on a couple of stone? grin

tethersend Mon 16-Sep-13 17:39:59
EldritchCleavage Mon 16-Sep-13 18:20:03

Any colour except:

I'm avoiding black, dark navy and grey because those are the colours I wear to work and having a coat like that as well would just be too dreary. I'm also avoiding purple because the coat I'm replacing is purple and I need a change.

God, I sound so fussy! It's because I buy quality and wear daily, keep for years so I have to like it and it has to last. I have got a beautiful grey-green Cerruti coat that is now about 15 years old and not really smart any more (badly wearing on sleeves and lapels and hem), so no good for work. That pre-dated the purple coat, which is about 9 years old, also wearing and not really warm enough-I really suffered last winter.

The hard thing is before husband and children I could please myself-I would throw a daft amount of money at the problem and end up with a gorgeous coat. Now my money is family money I can't justify that, but equally I haven't really adjusted to having to buy cheaper clothes. And yes, I know that's a 'first world problem' and I sound spoilt. But work clothes are my armour, I neeeeeeeed to feel smart and confident.

EldritchCleavage Mon 16-Sep-13 18:28:21

Stuff it. This is taking up far too much space in my head. I've just bought the teal one I linked to on Friday at 10:21 because (i) there was only one left and it was now or never; and (ii) they reduced it by 20%. If I hate it, I'll just have to send it back.

EldritchCleavage Mon 16-Sep-13 18:28:50

Thanks for all your coat search linky efforts, tethers.

tethersend Mon 16-Sep-13 19:30:58

I'm still going, just in case that one's not right grin

EldritchCleavage Tue 17-Sep-13 11:09:03

Oh tethersend! You bastard! I think I like that more than the one I ordered! Oh, hell.

tethersend Tue 17-Sep-13 15:17:27

not sorry, buy it

snowlie Tue 17-Sep-13 16:08:49

Try Cos - most of their coats are cocoon shape.

EldritchCleavage Tue 17-Sep-13 16:22:01

snowlie thank you. There is one in Cos I will try if the one I ordered doesn't suit and if I decide the Hobbs one is too egg-yolky.

EldritchCleavage Tue 17-Sep-13 19:56:09

Of course, now I've ordered something cocoon coats are popping up all over the place. Oh sod it.

EldritchCleavage Thu 19-Sep-13 10:29:39

Well, the ordered coat has arrived. It is the most beautiful quality and has the DH seal of approval to boot. It makes me look like a large jade egg, but I don't care!
Thanks all for the suggestions.

tethersend Thu 19-Sep-13 17:44:41

Oh great, glad you like it smile
