Are these boots too 'mumsy'?

I like these, but don't want to look dowdy.

I mainly wear leggings, and tunic tops, and want an ankle boot that looks smartish, with a decent tread on them.

I don't like chelsea boots, even though they seem 'on trend' this year.

So if not these, what?

bigTillyMint Fri 06-Sep-13 17:12:17

Hmmm, maybe if you are young and model-like. They would look very mum-bootish on me.

Look dowdy to me grin

ProtectiveMother Fri 06-Sep-13 17:14:33

I think they are not nice. I too am looking for winter boots so will keep you updated on any finds :-)

Screwfox Fri 06-Sep-13 17:14:43

They're a bit vegetarian

SofaCanary Fri 06-Sep-13 17:15:36

The mum boot alarm is ringing loud and clear shock

bigTillyMint Fri 06-Sep-13 17:16:02

Screwfoxgrin Vegetarian in the 80's!

DeathByTray Fri 06-Sep-13 17:17:19

I don't like the boots.

That aside - I hate the reference of mumsy = dowdy.

Screwfox Fri 06-Sep-13 17:18:21

Mumsy means dowdy. It means nothing else. It's like Saying that you don't like the idea of red being a dark shade of pink!

BethAndHerBrood Fri 06-Sep-13 17:23:39

Lol, that's what i secretly thought!

I am alarmed that i thought they looked 'comfy'blush

I may be teetering on the slippery slope to a wolf fleece and bootcut jeans!

Help save me!

Sorry but I think that they are worse than 'mumsy' and are actually 'very old lady-ish.' They are dreadful, imvho. However, if you like them and want to wear them, ignore me!

I think leggings and a tunic is already a difficult look to make 'not mumsy' so those boots would really not be helping.

These look sturdy and comfortable but less Footglove-ish.

campocaro Fri 06-Sep-13 17:26:52

They look reasonably smart and comfortable for every day.
I have some like this and also some like the higher heeled ones under the main photo for smarter occasions when I dont have to walk too far

CambridgeBlue Fri 06-Sep-13 17:33:08

I really like Clarks boots in general but I'm really not keen on those - I'm sure they'd be comfy but if you want something stylish they're not going to work imo. There are lots of better ones on the Clarks website that would tick both the comfy/practical and stylish boxes. I like these although I guess suede isn't actually that practical. These are nice, possibly a bit high (although I've got a couple of years ago's knee length version and find them really comfy and practical). The ones Remus linked to would be ideal as well.

BethAndHerBrood Fri 06-Sep-13 17:50:55

I like those second ones, cambrigeblue, i wonder if i can carry them off. I don't walk loads, but would like to be able to wander round town without ending up with feet balls of fire.

Remus, those are just a touch too 'biker' for me. And dh hated them.

Thanks for your opinions. All very helpful. grin

Yes, Cambridge's second ones look like they'd be good. smile

Dare I ask what your dh thought of your original ones? wink

orangeandemons Fri 06-Sep-13 17:55:02

My friends dh once described a pair of shoes that she bought as left wing. grin...sort of like vegetarian ones really

BethAndHerBrood Fri 06-Sep-13 17:59:02

Remus, i showed dh those i posted on here earlier. He just went off into a monologue of 'how can a woman with so many shoes blah blah blah'

He tends to not comment unless he dislikes something, so silence is a good sign!

ModerationInEverything Fri 06-Sep-13 18:04:13

I got DMs last year and they are super comfy. These are the ones I have www.shoes.co.uk/womens/dr-martens/boots/new-authentic-wedge-zip-calf-boot--743300001/black?cawelaid=1474607555&cagpspn=pla&gclid=co6e44igt7kcfuxktaodowqa8w but they have loads of styles.

If he was silent for the original ones, his opinion is worthless anyway! grin

BethAndHerBrood Fri 06-Sep-13 18:35:26

Oooh, i like those shimmery docs! Unfortunately, they are not really 'me', iykwim.

And those wedge boots wouldn't fit round my legs.sad

These are my current Clarks favourites, FWIW. Am watching keenly for when they come into stock.
Clarks have much luffliness this season.

BethAndHerBrood Fri 06-Sep-13 18:49:39

Mami, those are really nice, but not sure about suede though. I live somewhere where it rains a lot. It has started today. And probably wont stop till may.

toisa Fri 06-Sep-13 18:54:30

Positively not mum-bootish.....GRAN-bootish!!!! Mwah ha ha! Soorry...didnt mean to be rudethanks... But keep looking!

BethAndHerBrood Fri 06-Sep-13 18:57:02

Lol, toisa, yes, i know! I have been told. Several times.

Now have a yearning for a pair of doc martins.

dh will pass out

LynetteScavo Fri 06-Sep-13 19:00:37

Who said "smart and comfy"? Never a good combo. It's what my mother aims for (so, yes, mumsy) Unless you are talking ballet pumps, of course.

Those suede ones are lovely, but I've given up on suede boots.

Back2Two Fri 06-Sep-13 19:02:35

I love these

and these

And I bought these already....so comfy and I love them!!!

Clarks are fab. And you should always mention if they have 20% off online as they'll honour it in store too.

I've got those ballet shoes but in 'normal' leopard print, not grey. I love them and have worn them so much.

GypsyFloss Fri 06-Sep-13 19:04:48

I had those suede ones in tan nubuck last winter did they were fab, perfect with skinnies and dresses alike. The only downside is that heels were painted plastic and the paint rubbed off but it's not going to stop me getting them again once they come back in to stock in blue.

LEMisdisappointed Fri 06-Sep-13 19:05:30

I had a pair of clarkes boots once, they lasted two weeks - i took them back, never again

GypsyFloss Fri 06-Sep-13 19:06:35

And also have the leopard ballet flats and have just taken delivery of the national sugar biker boots in black smile

BethAndHerBrood Fri 06-Sep-13 19:11:46

Gypsy, how wide are the legs on those sugar boots. I like them. A lot.

Yamyoid Fri 06-Sep-13 19:12:26

I like them op. I think everyone else's links (apart from the dr martins) are very mumsy and boring.
<runs>

Parmarella Fri 06-Sep-13 19:13:43

The original ones in the OP are mumsy frumpsy.

I have them.

They are comfy, they keep my feet dry on rainy days when I don't want to wear my nice ( suede shoes)

I wear them often on those dark days when it pisses down with rain and nobody looks at you anyway as everyone hurries along with their raincoats and brollies.

BethAndHerBrood Fri 06-Sep-13 19:15:56

Parmarella, argh! You are messing with my mind now!

Back2Two Fri 06-Sep-13 19:18:40

beth
I think you could get away with them. Depends on what you wear, and in grim weather everyone will be jell.

GypsyFloss Fri 06-Sep-13 19:45:46

Beth not stupidly wide. I've got skinny calves and hate boots that wobble about like wellies. They've got 3 buckles on them so you can wear them looser/ tighter as you wish. They' also chunky but not clumpy but quite generously sized so don't size up for socks. If BWISE doesn't work then try BTS13 for 20% off.

BethAndHerBrood Fri 06-Sep-13 20:11:00

Thanks for that gypsy, may go to clarks tomorrow and have a try on.

Thanks everyone. You've been most helpful. thanks

OPeaches Fri 06-Sep-13 20:33:46

I think if you want to avoid mumsy, you need to avoid Clarks!

Fly London have lovely boots. The first doc martens linked to further up are v nice, and rocket dog and red or dead also do nice boots.

Back2Two Fri 06-Sep-13 21:58:14

Fly are lovely but leak in wet weather.

boodles Fri 06-Sep-13 22:02:27

They are nice mami. I am also wondering about these www.clarks.co.uk/p/20356859

CooCoolite Fri 06-Sep-13 22:12:30

Awful, epitome of mum boot!

boodles Fri 06-Sep-13 22:14:50

I obvs don't get mum boot then as I thought these www.clarks.co.uk/p/20352216 were mum boots.

MissStrawberry Fri 06-Sep-13 22:20:15

They look like this year's version of my boots I bought last year grin.

They are furry lined so lovely warm and comfy. But plain.

Screwfox Fri 06-Sep-13 22:22:53

The official mum boot (I'm the person who defined it originally ) are black leather block heel square toe. From the mid 90s. Maybe foot glove.

MrsSchadenfreude Fri 06-Sep-13 22:34:18

Oooh, comfy. grin I go for comfort over style in the foot department, and am currently sporting the world's ugliest sandals from Naot, but my excuse is that I have been on my feet all day.

these are my current boots. I also have a pair of Fly London boots that my mother would probably describe as "with it." blush

I'm v tempted by the Sugar boots.....

NotAsTired Fri 06-Sep-13 23:05:57

I quite like the look of these. Just not the price tag.

NotAsTired Fri 06-Sep-13 23:13:22

These are the ankle boot version of the above, but I don't think it's as nice, although infinitely better than the one in the OP. grin

CointreauVersial Sat 07-Sep-13 00:38:28

OPeaches - get with the programme - Clarks have really upped their game recently and do some great footwear.

CambridgeBlue Sat 07-Sep-13 06:53:27

As I said earlier I really like most Clarks boots and don't think they're mumsy at all. Fly London on the other hand seem to be both mumsy and ugly, surely nobody's trying to achieve THAT look!

CambridgeBlue Sat 07-Sep-13 06:56:47

PS OP as I mentioned I have similar boots to those in my second link and have always found them comfy for walking, no burning balls of feet at all (I know exactly what you mean though!) I think it's because although they're high-ish they have soft bouncy insides and the chunky heel helps spread the weight rather than it all balancing on the balls of your feet. Hopefully this season's version would be just as comfy.

SundaySimmons Sat 07-Sep-13 07:35:03

Using the 20% codes I have bought three pairs of clarks this season. I would never, ever, ever, ever have been seen dead in clarks but having seen a thread on here that mentioned them, I had a nosy and was very surprised to find that I liked a few of them.

The shoes in the OP are what I imagine Felixity Kendal wears. Inoffensive and comfortable.

The clarks ones I have bought are

www.clarks.co.uk/p/20355406

www.clarks.co.uk/p/20355407

And

www.clarks.co.uk/p/20356807

I still have another two vouchers for 20% so will return to buy the Orinoco sash in the black and/or the brown, moonlit star in blue and this bag which is in the men's section but is lovely

liftthatup Sat 07-Sep-13 12:32:35

Sunday I too got the mojito ones and nearly went for the more cowboy style too- we've got great taste smile

ProtectiveMother Sat 07-Sep-13 13:29:43

Ooh Schadenfreude who would have known Camper did such cute boots? Anyone know where to get these?

MortifiedAdams Sat 07-Sep-13 13:34:58
Notfootball Sat 07-Sep-13 18:49:07

Love those Clarks National Sugar ones, just ordered them in black with the 20% discount.

Beth, the Clarks suede beauties I linked to also come in black leather but not clear when either style will actually be in stock confused

Did you manage to get to a Clarks shop to try on IRL?
