Hairdresser tomorrow, I want a change...

(51 Posts)

I used to be the girl who never had the same haircut twice. Now I'm just a clone of the mums I see at playgroup.

Mid length, full head of highlights and all over mousey colour to hide the all too many greys.

I've had cut and grown out so many fringes, I've been every colour under the sun. From peroxide blonde to navy to pilar box red.

I was dark when I met and married dh. He always. Says he prefers it dark, but would never tell me to do anything. I like it dark too but the upkeep of dying it with the grey roots coming through is a night mare. It's shiny when dark. Blonde and its a bit meh.

It's currently the longest I have had it for years and I like being able to do things with it, so maybe I just need to change the colour.

I'm rambling now!! Does anyone have a suggestion???

Ok, I'm leaning towards sliver grey, someone talk me out of it........

Or lilac

chebella Fri 30-Aug-13 17:30:39

Do it (living vicariously emoticon)

Oh chebella, you are no help! grin

I used to be told I looked like Kelly Osborne, but not sure I could pull off lilac.

AndThatsWhatIThinkOfYou Fri 30-Aug-13 17:43:44

silver grey!!! I have mine like that, or pastel pink?

AndThatsWhatIThinkOfYou Fri 30-Aug-13 17:46:01

how about white blonde with a hint of pink. sorry I am a hairdresser and love adventurous clients like you, very exciting!! grin

My hairdresser said that about me too andthatswhaithinkofyou! She does do a lot of old lady sets though!!

I do like this

Seeing as you are an expert, do you think it could be done in one sitting? Or would I have to bleach then tint?

ClaraDeLaNoche Fri 30-Aug-13 18:09:37

I went back to dark and got a blunt fringe recently, I love it! The roots are easier to hide with the fringe, there's just the top bit to touch up and not all around the temples. Go for a Claudia Winkleman like me!

That's what I had pre blonding Clara! I'm going to try upload to my profile.

AndThatsWhatIThinkOfYou Fri 30-Aug-13 18:21:35

I love it!! youl have to pre lighten all over and have a toner on, I love having white hair you can have all sorts of different toners from platinum, grey, pastel colours and silver. I love having pastel colours. 'dusty rose' is my favourite quite like the pic but more pink than purpley. Go for it!!! please update us all! grin grin

Ok dark and light pics on profile.

Coconutty Fri 30-Aug-13 18:27:29

I think that you look good with both, looks shiner with dark hair but I would go for the lilac if I were you are felt brave. It's sooo cool and different, not a mummy cut at all.

If you don't want a full head of lilac/pink, can you go white blonde with some slices?

I have sent a message to my hairdresser to see what she thinks. Also I'm not sure they will have the colour in. Might need to get it in specially.

swooosh Fri 30-Aug-13 19:10:32

Mine was mousey brown and highlighted until this afternoon when my hairdresser put an all over PURPLE on it. The dark bits that were originally there are no brunette, the rest a plummy purple and the highlights bright purple grin

BEST thing I did!

Pic please swoosh! grin

SmallTorch Fri 30-Aug-13 19:14:45

I am going for a pixie cut next Tuesday.

swooosh Fri 30-Aug-13 19:20:08

should be on my profile!

You need to make your profile public swoosh

Pixie cut sounds great, but I don't suit my hai shot. I'm too round in the face.

I like the dark better. It would look lovely dark with some red or purple in it.

LeoandBoosmum Fri 30-Aug-13 19:28:43

The condition looks lovely in that brunette pic but I like you with lighter hair. I would no do the blonde/ pink combo...I think this only works on those with the palest, most ghostly of complexions. I think you should do what Swooosh did smile I also think a longer, sideswept fringe would be more flattering.

swooosh Fri 30-Aug-13 19:32:30

Think I've made it public now!

DisappointedHorse Fri 30-Aug-13 19:36:52

OP I could have written your post! I'm exactly the same, I always had different and usually cool hair and now I'm bored and feel identikit. I hate mine blonde but dark is so hard to keep up to now I'm really grey! I can't go too different though because of work.

I like yours dark, it's very shiny and I think it suits your skin tone. How about dark blue?

I am very pale, blue infact!

Hairdresser has messages me back to say it would take a couple of visits to get the lilac. She is having a think tonight

DisappointedHorse Fri 30-Aug-13 19:38:21

I love that swoosh!

Swoosh, that is a-maz-ing I love it!

My grey is quite even throughout apart from at the from right on my parting. I have a Karen franklin streak going on!

Love your hair, Swoosh. I had mine a similar colour in my early 20s. Now I am nearly twice that, I feel I can't. smile

Coconutty Fri 30-Aug-13 19:52:14

Swoosh - that looks fab.

I'm 32 21 am I too old??

And Leo, I agree about a sweeping fringe.

swooosh Fri 30-Aug-13 20:04:51

Thanks! I'm 25 grin I loooove it!

I like the sound of lilac Glaikit, it was one of my options.

Coconutty Fri 30-Aug-13 20:12:04

Not too old at all.

MissDD1971 Fri 30-Aug-13 20:12:05

I love you dark btw OP - really suits you. don't know what to suggest, plum lowlights? maybe caramel ones so you get the light part?

MrsDavidBowie Fri 30-Aug-13 20:16:56

I love your hair swoosh.

Tweet2tweet Fri 30-Aug-13 20:35:03

OP, defo go dark it really suits you. What about going for some red flashes like in this pic?

AndThatsWhatIThinkOfYou Fri 30-Aug-13 21:49:48

if your going naturally grey, it will be easier to keep up to it being lighter, you won't notice the sly beggars creeping through as much. Live on the edge and go for it, once you go dark it's much harder to go back light, where as its alot easier to go darker from blonde, so if your not keen at least you know you've tried it. grin grin

Appointment at 11, I will report back when I'm home! I'm leaning towards blonde. When offering opinion dh said dark, but I don't listen to what he says wink

still at Hairdresser. I may be some time!grin

Ok, I'm home, blonder but not lilac, armed with silver shampoo to get rid of the gold tones before the lilac happens.

New photo on profile.

swooosh Sat 31-Aug-13 15:45:11

oooh that looks lovely! I LOVE silver shampoo, it makes a massive difference.

AndThatsWhatIThinkOfYou Sat 31-Aug-13 18:09:31

yeey a few more visits and itl be there!! grin grin

Spottypurse Sat 31-Aug-13 18:16:03

Wow. Fab. grin can't wait to see the lilac. I chickened out of purple flashes today, but did go red. And short.

Andthats when do you think I can go for the next step?? Should I wait and see how the sliver shampoo works first?

I forgot to make an appointment when I left, but I normally go every 6 weeks. I am impatient at the best of times!

Coconutty Sat 31-Aug-13 21:55:32

Ooh I like it.

AndThatsWhatIThinkOfYou Sun 01-Sep-13 00:08:48

the silver shampoo will make a bit of a difference but it needs to be slightly lighter to achieve that 'grey' look. Your hairdresser has done the right thing by doing it in stages, I know you said earlier she does alot of sets but this just means she has more experience. I don't no what shade you were before but bleach can damage your hair if you don't look after it, eg regular trims and treat your self to a hair treatment or even just leave conditioner on for 10 mins while in bath.

Take your hairdressers advice on when to have it done again if your impatient like me I'd have it done again in a week but I'm a hairdresser and if my hair snaps of I know it will grow again haha also I don't know what condition your hair is in so be patient your stylist knows best!!

So exciting!!! grin grin little tip... put silver shampoo on dry hair - make sure you get every bit of hair mind, you might use half a bottle so get the cheap stuff from bodycare - leave on for an hour or so if your feeling a bit dull it will tone it and take the yellowness out. (this is secret knowledge only know by hairdressers and not spoken of, otherwise nobody would need a toner lol) grin grin

I love my hairdresser and trust her implicitly. The salon I go To is a small village one, and there is alway a lady getting a set done (they have the best stories IMO, so I don't mind) and its not £££ like the Aveda one I used to go to and never see the same stylist twice. I've been going here for 4 years and not had a bad experience yet.

I have a trim at least every 6 weeks and I'm a 3 Minute Miracle girl, put it on, wrap a towel and clean the bathroom, rinse!

Before the blonde I was the dark in the photo on my profile. I've been going lighter for about 18 months so my ends need extra time to lift the colour. But she chopped an inch off yesterday and put more highlights through the underneath than she would normally. She said herself that she thinks the ends are light enough to do it next time.

Thanks for the shampoo tip! Will go buy more from bodycare can't afford £8 a bottle for the stuff hairdresser gave me if I need to use half a bottle each time!!

And I am firmly of the opinion that it will grow back if it goes wrong! And it has gone wrong many time in my life! grin it's only hair!

AndThatsWhatIThinkOfYou Sun 01-Sep-13 17:21:41

brilliant don't do the shampoo on dry hair every time do it once see what happens you only need to use the silver shampoo maybe twice a week to keep the cool tones smile

cocolepew Sun 01-Sep-13 17:31:19

It looks lovely. I love your white glasses too. I gave up on going blonde today and went back to dark, I have no patience!

Swoosh your hair is amazing, I never realised you were a youngster grin

Week one update!

The silver shampoo is working. Did the dry hair thing suggested by AndThatsWhatIThinkOfYou tonight and wow! It's really lifted the warmth through the top layers. Couple more weeks and I'm back at the hairdressers for stage two!! Eeeeek!
