Why do you wear make up?

Just that, really.

shootfromthehip Wed 07-Aug-13 13:50:23

Several reasons, I hope you are sitting comfortably...

1) I have bad skin and being in my mid thirties, I feel the need to hide the fact that I look like a teenager

2) I have a very masculine face; long nose, strong jaw, big forehead (ha- not selling myself really here). It feminises me.

3) I like the dressing up aspect of making myself look completely different according to my mood- strong colours/ classic combinations/ natural etc etc

4) I have a job in which I think grooming is really important- I think make up makes me look well turned out.

That's mainly it wink

libertychick Wed 07-Aug-13 13:50:35

I did not wear make up on a daily basis until about 2/3 years ago (I am 40). But now my skin is not as good - stress, sleep deprivation etc mean I just look a bit tired and old so I find a bit of foundation, concealer, blush and lippy makes me look a bit fresher and therefore I feel better about myself. It's mainly for work - I don't always bother at the weekend.

BinksToEnlightenment Wed 07-Aug-13 14:31:13

The same reason I don't wear a sleeping bag with holes cut out for my feet and arms.

bunnymother Wed 07-Aug-13 14:32:16

You wouldn't ask the question if you saw me without makeup. grin

Thurlow Wed 07-Aug-13 14:34:51

It makes me feel better. I don't mind not wearing make-up, but I feel that I look a bit better with it on - foundation evens out any blotches, mascara and cheek tint make me look a bit less washed out.

So that when I pass a mirror/reflective surface I don't think 'oh bloody hell'.

Panzee Wed 07-Aug-13 14:36:11

I scare myself without make up. grin I don't even wear much, just foundation, nothing else.

ImNotBloody14 Wed 07-Aug-13 14:36:23

1) i love the way it changes my appearance- i love how different colours, products and brushes can all have a vastly different effect.

2) i like the look of a made-up face- whether that be very subtle natural make-up or clearly, well done, but artificial looking make-up (not badly applied shit- the pro stuff)

3) increasingly my mother asks me what's wrong with me if she happens to catch me without make-up- meaning i look like shit without it so must be ill hmm

MrsPercyPig Wed 07-Aug-13 14:37:34

I look like death without it!

I don't wear lots of makeup, just tinted moisturiser and blusher to give me a 'glow' and it makes me feel good!

myalias Wed 07-Aug-13 14:40:02

To disguise the bad and enhance the good - I work in customer service and I'm not going to deny it but far too vain to go make up free and wearing it gives me confidence.

HomeEcoGnomist Wed 07-Aug-13 14:40:18

Lots of reasons

I am very fair so look like I have no eyelashes if I don't wear mascara

I think I look nice in it

I like buying it/reading magazine articles and learning more about what to use

I don't want to scare small children

At work, it is part of my 'mask'/image, whatever you want to call it.

Nothing to do with what others think, or to please a man, or because I am at the mercy of the patriarchy

Why do you ask OP?

ImNotBloody14 Wed 07-Aug-13 14:40:47

"The same reason I don't wear a sleeping bag with holes cut out for my feet and arms."

heat preservation? confused grin

Hassled Wed 07-Aug-13 14:41:03

Because I look as rough as a badger's arse without it. Seriously rough. And to add to the original issues (primarily, scary dark rings below my eyes), one of the many, many joys of the perimenopause is that I'm getting brown pigmentation creeping across my face - I can't just leave that uncovered.

lottieandmia Wed 07-Aug-13 14:42:24

Because it enhances the way I look and I feel smarter with it on.

oreoaddict Wed 07-Aug-13 14:44:03

hmmmm, it's hard to think why really because I've been wearing it on a daily basis, since I was 12 confused I know...... quite young. I'm 29 now and the idea of not having it to hand, fills me with horror!

Again, I don't really know why I feel the need, so I'm probably not the best person to post on here grin I'm blessed with good skin, but wear foundation every day. I also wear, mascara, lipstick and eyeliner every day too.

I'm pale and I have big eyes, so I look a little gothic without make up, but tbh, I think it's just habit and the fact that I'm more comfortable looking at my face with makeup, rather than without. I guess I just feel more me with makeup, which is quite sad really isn't it.

Lottapianos Wed 07-Aug-13 14:46:14

Very good question!

My face is all different colours - red cheeks, grey eye sockets, slight brown patches on cheekbones - and make-up evens it all out
I don't think I'm attractive or feminine enough without it sad
It gives me confidence
It's fun - I love wearing bright eyeshadows and mucking around with black eyeliner etc.

cloudskitchen Wed 07-Aug-13 14:46:47

I prefer the way my face looks with it on. mascara frames my eyes, tinted mousturiser or foundation in winter even out my skin tone and lip colour enhances my slightly colourless lips.

Keztrel Wed 07-Aug-13 14:46:53

Because it makes me look prettier.

Bexicles Wed 07-Aug-13 15:07:20

I have very pale skin without make up I have dark circles and look wiped out! I don't use too much just blush, lipstick, mascara, eyebrow pencil and light foundation during the day. Also I love the ritual, it's part of my morning routine.

Skinheadmermaid Wed 07-Aug-13 15:43:43

When i was younger i used to match my eyeshadow etc to my outfits and do fancy designs. I used to be really fat as well and wanted to draw attention away from my super sized frame. ( not that it worked!)
Now i wear a shed load of foundation and concealer because my skin is just AWFUL. Really appallingly bad and its quite depressing. sad almost every month i have huge lumps of cystic acne cropping up on my chin and loads and loads of scars over that whole area from years of it despite me not touching them. I also have loads of tiny white heads and bumps if i eat anything my body doesn't like: sugar, wheat, grease. I know i shouldn't eat junk food and i rarely do but thats enough for my bloody skin!
Now the spots have stared creeping up my previously clear cheeks and forehead so i have to smother the whole area in cover up.
As i've spent so much time in the mornings doing my base i feel i might as well finish my face and draw attention to areas i do like so then finish off with lipstick, blusher, eyeshadow, liner and mascara.
I would love to just go out with a slick of mascara and a bit of lip balm like other women but i look an absolute fright. sad

Hopefully Wed 07-Aug-13 15:50:31

I look much more business like at work

I feel like my look is much more stylish with red lipstick, my whole outfit feels more polished, even if it's quite casual.

I don't wear it every single day, but most of the time I do my three essentials of tinted moisturiser, mascara and lipstick

Because it makes me look better. I don't look terrible without it (I'm not wearing any right now as I have just go home from taking the DC swimming so I didn't bother putting any on this morning - I didn't notice anyone running away screaming in terror while I was out and about) but I do look and feel better with a little bit. I go for a natural look, usually very lightweight foundation or tinted moisturiser, one coat of mascara and a slick of neutral lip gloss. It makes me look like me, but better.

Nagoo Wed 07-Aug-13 15:58:08

To cover up my zits primarily. I am 34 and have as many as I did when I was 14. I am less bothered on a good skin day.

To make me feel a bit 'done' when I go somewhere. I like to feel like I have tried to make an effort so if I whack a bit of mascara/ blusher on, I feel more ready-to-go!

Selks Wed 07-Aug-13 15:58:13

Because I want to.

NandH Wed 07-Aug-13 15:58:51

1. I feel ugly without it.
2. Im unconfident without it and find myself walking along looking at the floor if I go out without any on (which is extremely rare anyway)

HalfSpamHalfBrisket Wed 07-Aug-13 16:02:50

Because I have very deep set eyes and unless I use concealer I get asked if I am unwell.
Because I'm getting loads of hormone related zits, and having had lovely clear skin before, I cover them up as they make sad.

fieldfare Wed 07-Aug-13 16:04:14

Most days I just wear tinted moisturiser, mascara and some rose lip balm but then I'm running around with children and not in a customer facing role anymore.
When I had to be suited and booted for work I was a lot more highly groomed.
I wear make-up (whatever amount) because I like how I look with it. But I also like how I look when I've not got any on, as long as I've had enough sleep and drunk enough water!

dexter73 Wed 07-Aug-13 16:05:18

I like the way it makes me look.

Naebother Wed 07-Aug-13 16:11:07

It makes me look better.

SuckAtRelationships Wed 07-Aug-13 19:11:05

To enhance my good features (eyes). No reason really. I am definitely not on the hunt for a man or anything.

FamiliesShareGerms Wed 07-Aug-13 19:16:24

Like other posters, it covers up the bad bits (bad skin, dark circles) and enhances the good bits (long eyelashes, but fair without mascara). That's about the sum of it!

CoTananat Wed 07-Aug-13 19:23:32

I don't wear it but I'm starting to get interested in the whole idea. Is there a good thread on S&B where I can go to learn? Like the bra threads?

(I've never found a foundation that remotely matched the colour of my skin, which is a really strange pink. )

SundaySimmons Wed 07-Aug-13 22:20:32

Primarily to make my skin look better. Mascara, eyeliner, eyeshadow opens my eyes. Lipstick plumps my lips and blusher enhances my cheekbones.

I do not go out without wearing make up. Never. Even if my house was on fire I would stop to put it on!

On some days I wear make up and style my hair.

On other days I don't wear make up and my hair goes in a scrunchie.

It just depends how I feel.

Samu2 Wed 07-Aug-13 22:34:06

So I don't look like I am surviving on very little sleep.

I have been told I resemble a heroin addict without eye makeup hmm

Eliza22 Wed 07-Aug-13 23:01:52

When I was in my 20's I was fascinated by the power of transformation. My mum always told people my sister was the pretty one (she was, too) but I had "something about me". When I started wearing makeup regularly in my early 20's, just basic stuff, not like 14 yr olds do today, I suddenly "became" pretty and as a former Tom boy, I loved it! I loved playing with it.... I'm still drawn to the counters like a kid in a sweet shop. The packaging, the colours and textures. Like jewels.

In my 30's I wore it to hide my lack of sleep. (Kids)
In my 40's, to hide the massive stress of divorce
I'm 51 next month and now, I wear it because I feel tired without it and "together" with it on. I can honestly, honestly say, that I wear it for ME. Not my husband or society or to fit in.

DameDoom Thu 08-Aug-13 00:05:06

Good make-up ( not necessarily expensive though) is so transformative and it gives me a massive confidence boost. I look washed out and so much older without it - am happy to go bare-faced at the weekend at home but I haven't left the house or answered the door without some level of make-up since I was about 15 - am 41 now. I really enjoy products and my mum started me on an excellent skincare routine at 12 so all this stuff is second nature. I don't wear a great deal and veer towards the youthifying glowy look. My colleague never wears it and believes it to be rather vain and a bit of a foolish frippery - can't help but think she is missing out on something rather fun.

VenusRising Thu 08-Aug-13 00:15:41

I wear make up so people don't keep asking me if I'm alright, and do I need to sit down envy shock

I can look a bit haggard without it, but a touch of mascara and liner and I think I look better. blush grin
A swipe of bronzed around and about makes me look warmer, iykwim!

ZacharyQuack Thu 08-Aug-13 00:16:28

I wear makeup to justify the amount of money I spend on it.

runningforthebusinheels Thu 08-Aug-13 00:25:09

Because I'm so amazingly pale without being an English rose that I have to. My face is just blank otherwise - but simply add some foundation, eyebrow pencil, eyeshadow, a tiny bit of eyeliner, mascara and lipstick and I look fine. I never look overmade up, but without makeup I look pale and wan. And 60. (I'm 42).

EverythingInMjiniature Thu 08-Aug-13 00:29:26

Because my allergies mean if I don't random people stop me and ask why I'm crying

Remotecontrolduck Thu 08-Aug-13 00:30:36

Because I love the way it looks.

Simple as that really.

Monty27 Thu 08-Aug-13 00:35:45

Foundation to cover my skin tone which is not naice, mascara to make me look awake, and bright red lipstick to make me look glam smile but probably fails grin

Don't wear a lot more. I spend about 2 mins doing it. A bit longer if I'm going out to a party or something and I may even try to put a bit of eyeshadow on.

tigerdriverII Thu 08-Aug-13 00:37:05

It looks good. I like it. I want to.

Most days I don't wear it. This summer I have as I have a bit of a tan and a nice even tan looks so much nicer than a blodgy old fizz hog.

runningforthebusinheels Thu 08-Aug-13 00:38:28

Btw: I do this grin

Monty27 Thu 08-Aug-13 00:51:28

BRILLIANT! Bit like me but not the eyeliner and only occasionally blusher. grin

Why do I wear make up OP? Cos I'm worth it! grin

Monty27 Thu 08-Aug-13 00:52:18

Sorry that was in response to Running's link. Thanks for that. smile

msshapelybottom Thu 08-Aug-13 08:44:34

I only wear eye make up, eyeliner and mascara, or nude eyeshadow shades and mascara. I just like how it enhances the way my eyes look...not totally different, just...more IYKWIM?

I used to wear a lot of purple eyeliner (green eyes) but now I prefer a more natural look.

Hate foundation, concealer, blusher and lipstick though. I'm happy to go about with blotchy skin but don't take my mascara away!

LynetteScavo Thu 08-Aug-13 08:50:39

It makes me look less dead.

I don't wear much, especially if I have a tan, but I wouldn't throw away my makeup bag.

It protects my skin. Make up provides a barrier between you and pollutants.

Some make up is actively good for the skin like mineral make up.

I look 10 years younger than my actual age from having worn make up since my late teens.

MadBusLady Thu 08-Aug-13 08:51:46

It makes me look like me, only better. I don't tend to do a lot with my eyes and lips though, which I think is what makes people think "she's wearing lots of make-up". I am more about the contours and outlines. If I only have 2 minutes I do BB cream, eyebrow pencil, powder on nose and blusher. Make-up is kind of like drawing yourself in felt pen.

Bonsoir Thu 08-Aug-13 08:53:17

Because I have convinced myself that I look better with it. I don't wear much though.

elQuintoConyo Thu 08-Aug-13 09:00:07

Because I look like one of the Walking Dead without it.
Because I'm terribly pale and look invisible with no slap.
I only wear the bare minimum and don't have a different day/evening look, maybe just a different lippy.
It saves me from being too much of a walloping great moose!

madmomma Thu 08-Aug-13 09:03:49

Because I look like a crack whore without it.

colditz Thu 08-Aug-13 09:04:35

It's like icing a delicious cake <<preen>>

dexter73 Thu 08-Aug-13 09:08:37

Is this going to be a discussion on the Wright Show soon?!

SprinkleLiberally Thu 08-Aug-13 09:17:09

I look nice with it. Also, I love the actual process of putting it on. It's fun!

oreoaddict Thu 08-Aug-13 11:26:42

dexter really?.....

dexter73 Thu 08-Aug-13 11:28:38

What do you mean oreo? They often take discussions on here and use them in their show. Why not have a discussion on why women wear make-up?

LaRegina Thu 08-Aug-13 11:34:40

I like the process of applying makeup and experimenting with different colours.

I know I look better (so therefore feel better) wearing it. I actually think I look quite washed out and unhealthy without it.

And I love shopping for makeup - so it would be a waste not to use it grin

Keztrel Thu 08-Aug-13 11:37:08

LOL madmomma. But I reckon it is just our own perceptions that we look corpse-like or tired without make up. When I think of my friends who don't wear it, who are just as pasty and weedy-lashed as me, I never think they look ill or tired - they just look like themselves. But on me, it's the contrast between how I look with and without it that makes me think GAAH when I see myself bare-faced. So my answer to this question is always just 'it makes me look prettier'.

Spoonpaws Thu 08-Aug-13 11:39:50

I don't wear makeup. Usually because if I try to I look like a comedy panda. But mostly because I can't be bothered.

ummlilia Thu 08-Aug-13 11:40:33

Haven't worn it for ten years..and never really got into it before that..am just happy as I am (not wishing to imply that others aren't though..)

oreoaddict Thu 08-Aug-13 11:45:54

dexter, oh. Well I didn't know that grin I can imagine it being a good discussion actually. Watch this space then I guess.

dexter73 Thu 08-Aug-13 11:49:00

Some make-up threads in the past have become real bunfights! It is amazing what people can get upset about!

EssexGurl Thu 08-Aug-13 12:54:59

Same as alot of you. I have been wearing more recently but that is because I found the right foundation. I went to the Boots no7 counter to do the matching thing. It was a revelation. The foundation is my skin colour and I still look like me only 100% better. I have worn it most days and it does make me feel more confident as I feel more polished.

As a SAHM I don't feel the need like I did when I worked. But I also feel more anonymous. A bit of slap gives me a boost in the mornings

ChildOfThe1980s Thu 08-Aug-13 19:04:35

I usually just use foundation because I can't be bothered to do any more, and because I often have spots. Lipstick always comes off and eye stuff freaks my eyes out.
