Best buy of the year so far?

(78 Posts)

I was thinking about this today. I think mine is these shoes. I have worn them several times a week and still love them to bits.

Anyone else care to share?

WaitingForMe Wed 12-Jun-13 20:02:50

I spent shock at Laundry in Manchester when visiting my mum. Their stuff is amazing - I bought about 9 items of clothing! Seriously, if you go to Manchester go in and ask to be styled. I have a million outfits out of those items AND they go with the rest of my wardrobe.

MrsCampbellBlack Wed 12-Jun-13 20:13:16

new jacket - love it so much. And have worn several times in the last week.

I was going to get that jacket mrsCB but sold out in my size by the time they deigned to give me a preview code. It's lovely - will you reverse it do you think?

Waiting just had a look at their site and now wish I lived in Manchester - love the tribal maxis!

DewDr0p Wed 12-Jun-13 21:04:27

I love those shoes amber and the jacket mrsc

Mine is probably these boots from Office. Thought it was a bit late to be buying boots when I got them <hollow laugh> but have worn them loads!

Although my new sandals might be a close contender if the sun ever reappears!

DewDr0p Wed 12-Jun-13 21:05:15

waiting love the look of that shop too - was v pleasantly surprised by the prices grin

Mine are a couple of basics which make everything else easier to wear AND go really well together. Neither of them are online anymore -
black cigarette trousers - Cos
black mesh jumper - Cos

and my lovely tan leather Converse, which I am utterly devoted to, after dithering for ages about whether to buy them. smile

libertychick Wed 12-Jun-13 21:47:48

These M&S flats which I found while hunting for a cheaper alternative to Amber's gorgeous JV's. They work with almost everything.

And this Gerard Darel dress but in black which I have worn at least once a week since I bought it in the January sales. Very comfortable, work appropriate and just enough va va voom to put a spring in my step smile

liberty - GD is my go to for workwear.

Remus - glad the cons are working out for you!

Dew those sandals are gorgeous, and they'll last you til you're 80 as you'll only wear them once a year wink

Sonotkylie Thu 13-Jun-13 13:32:00

Liberty: i've had my eye on those M and S flats for a little while.. Tell me, if you don't mind, are they grey neutral or beige neutral? Thank you

For me, it was Kiehls 'creme de corps' body moisturiser. Leaves skin so soft and glowing.

And my Chloe mini marcie. I am skint now but no regrets oddly enough grin

foxysocks Thu 13-Jun-13 15:14:12

good qu! I think mine is probably a rag and bone grey jersey biker from the outnet. have worn about three times a week if not more.

this one

although skinny grey goldsigns also right up there, SO useful flattering and comfortable. OH and ash nude trainers - ditto.

sweetheart Thu 13-Jun-13 15:22:32

liberty could I ask where you got the GD dress from?

Toasted did you return the Hobbs?

libertychick Thu 13-Jun-13 15:44:12

Sonotkylie they are beige neutral and the trim is black. The patterning is all over the place - I ordered 3 pairs before I got one I was happy with!

sweetheart I got the GD dress in the GD shop on Marylebone High Street

Sonotkylie Thu 13-Jun-13 15:45:59

Thank you very much. I couldn't tell from the picture. Back to the umming and ahhing ...

libertychick Thu 13-Jun-13 16:05:01

Quite a few of the regulars on the MN Vogue thread have bought them sonotkylie and the consensus is that you need to size up in them. They are fab smile

santamarianovella Thu 13-Jun-13 16:23:04

mrscb I love that marant jacket, really gutted it sold out in my size,
For it me it's this jacket by iro.
liberty that GD dress is so gorgeous.
toasted did u get the Chloe instead of the Hobbs?

Sonotkylie Thu 13-Jun-13 16:26:22

Wanted them to be grey. But black piping makes them more versatile ... You KNOW i'm going to do it don't you ...
Thanks for the tip!

these would be my favourite buy of the year, closely followed by another Marant

charitygirl Thu 13-Jun-13 16:33:45

Probably my Ash Virgins - not terribly exciting but after a few frustrating weeks in the Uk finding them sold out in my size everywhere, I spotted them on holiday in Venice and snapped them up.

Have also worn this a lot - and what a bargain it is now!

Ashoething Thu 13-Jun-13 17:04:09

Any of my Lady vintage London dresses as I wear them all the time!

The tan t-bar shoes I got for £3 from charity shop or the red waist cincher belt that was £2 from primark.

AmberNectarine No, i am ashamed to admit to buying both - and loving them! Bag collection hopefully complete for yrs to come. Had to cancel this yrs holiday so thought 'sod it' and bought bags instead shock

HappyGirlNow Thu 13-Jun-13 17:27:08

Aw charitygirl I got those shipped from the US last year.. Love 'em grin Coincidentally I'm not long back from a weekend in Venice where I wore them all the time - so comfortable..

Love that R&B biker.

MrsCampbellBlack Thu 13-Jun-13 19:37:09

Love the iro and marant - santa and sleep!

Foxy - I've worn my biker lots too.

The only thing I want in the sales is the marant ariana - come on nap sale, start soon please.

Laska42 Thu 13-Jun-13 21:07:51

this and this and a gorgeous orange broderie anglaise sleeveless shirt dress from tkmaxx (but cant find a picture)

Laska42 Thu 13-Jun-13 21:15:47

I so want this though..

Oooh Laska that Arana Maxi Dress is THE most gorgeous fabric pattern.

Laska42 Thu 13-Jun-13 21:23:47

It is isn't It? I love it and is so flattering .. (I bought it at full price though the moment it came into Monsoon - not something I usually do - and now glad I did! )

Amazinggg Thu 13-Jun-13 22:32:24

Black leather biker jacket from River Island, a total bargain at £100, just gorgeous smooshy nappa type leather, goes with pretty much everything I own.

And my olive Primark skinnies for £7 which I love, partly because they're a size 8 not vanity sized at all, oh no and wear several times a week, can be dressed up or down and again just seem to slot seamlessly into my wardrobe.

ivanapoo Fri 14-Jun-13 07:49:22

My M&S jeggings in watermelon red - so much happier than my usual black/indigo denim...

AntPants1 Fri 14-Jun-13 13:01:42

This belt from topshop has been great

Laquila Fri 14-Jun-13 13:11:24

Half-price cream marl jersey blazer from Zara, which I bang on about all the time, which has been soooo useful.

Amazinggg aren't leather jackets useful?! I bought one from Gap a couple of Christmases ago - it was about £120 and it's not half had some wear. Just seems to go with everything and makes everything look so much cooler!

QueenCadbury Fri 14-Jun-13 13:37:26

Too many buys this year to name just one grin but it'll be either my pink or red cardi that get worn several times a week.

My definite best buy was getting my colours done. Totally worth every penny.

Annianni Fri 14-Jun-13 13:42:46

It's probably my Hudson beth baby bootcuts.
I wear them on average twice a week.
And they were a bargainous £50 in the Donna Ida sale earlier this year.

Limecrime velvetine matte lipstick in red velvet, I wear it nearly every day and it cheers me up. The most expensive lippy I own but it's worth it smile

Citizens of Humanity jeans.

So envy of the mini Marcie Toasted. And I love that Iro jacket!

Biker jackets are the bee's knees - mine was from Oasis about a year and a half ago and it is literally the best £100 I have ever spent. Love it and it's hardly ever off my back!

Sonotkylie Fri 14-Jun-13 18:14:27

Shoes arrived today. They are massive! Interestingly the 6 (my usual size) is also marked 39 1/2 rather than 39 so I think they may have changed the sizing? Anyway, great on all other fronts so I will re- order. But out of a massive £184 order, I am keeping £4 worth of school daps for DS ... No VPL pants give the worst Vpl ever seen even 2 sizes too big, and the pull on jeggings which I know everyone raves about just don't work on me at all - not as nice as either leggings or jeans. Am going to pour myself a big glass of wine now.

MrsCampbellBlack Fri 14-Jun-13 18:23:49

Was thinking about this more and these 2 things have been used to death

Etoile blouse perfect for fat days

And my lovely red bag. There is something very cheering about a red bag.

libertychick Fri 14-Jun-13 21:19:41

Interesting on the shoes Sonotkylie. Have you narrow feet? I found them slightly long but very narrow?

I have been hankering after that Marant blouse MrsCB - 'good for fat days' may well be the deciding factor if it goes in the sale! I also really like the ariana....

That sounds simply wonderful annielaw! What was the website again?

hmm

polyhymnia Fri 14-Jun-13 22:17:44

amber love those shoes . Are they comfortable ? What's sizing like?

MrsCampbellBlack Sat 15-Jun-13 07:46:31

Its in the sale on matches Liberty and it also washes incredibly well. I love it!

Sonotkylie Sat 15-Jun-13 08:03:01

I didn't think I had narrow feet, although Boden shoes fit me and they have a narrow reputation. Let's see how the 5.5 work.
And the Marant blouse is gorgeous.

poly they are comfortable, they have padded soles. They're a little big on me, but I am a 5.5 really and got a 6, so I would think TTS if you were not a dodgy half size like me.

EliotNess Sat 15-Jun-13 09:03:10

which jacket CB? GOes to home page for me

EliotNess Sat 15-Jun-13 09:03:53

i dont like any of the marant stuff on that page though - hippy stuff is not for me

EliotNess Sat 15-Jun-13 09:05:28

my best thing so far have been my neon clutches - even if your outfit is a tad wintery as it is atm, the zara yellow one www.zara.com/uk/en/trf/handbags/basic-clutch-bag-c358041p1251501.html
and the Gap ink one from xmas are amazing

EliotNess Sat 15-Jun-13 09:06:05

oh plus got a snakeskin bag form laura bloody ashley of all places in the sale.

thats a good transitional bag * does wanker sign at self *

dexter73 Sat 15-Jun-13 09:21:11

I love all the hippy Marant stuff. I had looked at the shirt Mrs CB has but in black and white. Bit pricy so got this instead and it is lovely. Also it is only £15 at Warehouse so got JL to price match.

polyhymnia Sat 15-Jun-13 10:15:17

Thanks, amber. Like the idea of the padded sole. Going to explore them. Don't think I'll go for the M and S ones as I've had bad experiences in past with shoes from there which seemed comfortable until I actually wore them for a day, when they ripped my feet to pieces.

Eliot I got a snakeskin scarf from Laura Ashley this year - grey and lemon yellow. Love it.

My best buy probably a pair of tan pointy toe flats from Aldo. They have a hidden wedge and elasticated sides and look shit on the website but they are brilliant. here

iMe Sat 15-Jun-13 13:59:43

mine is a me&em black drawstring waist dress from £150 down to £45. (sold out now) I am disappointed that after only a few wears it has pilled a little but the cut and the shape and everything else about it is so perfect, I love it. Hopefully it will not pill anymore. I can wear it with flipflops for casual or add heels and hide the drawstring with my obi belt to dress it up.

Just remembered my lovely studded brown leather clutch. Will try to find a pic. Probably quite 'dull' to some of you lot but I am v happy with it! smile

Here Even more of a bargain now.

Amazinggg Sat 15-Jun-13 14:26:51

Not a fan of the Marant stuff - looks amazing on the models, but on anyone over a size 8 and over the age of 22 it's going to look like leftovers from the 1990s IMO. I think it's a trickier fashion to pull off than it appears. What is it the Guardian called it - glam boho? Doesn't really work if you just bung on a blouse with jeans. Tesco sell floaty blouses every season, a lot of the Marant stuff looks not much different to me blush

mignonette Sat 15-Jun-13 14:29:44

A pair of grey felt flat form brogues from River Island. Cost? £8 in sale!

this Merci-Paris bag is shaping up nicely too.

this cheapo New Look swallow print T is washing and wearing very well..

Was given this Marant wool knit coat by a friend. It was a press sample that she was given herself and doesn't shock like....I wear it out, I wear it as a dressing gown....

And these J Crew geo-print slim leg pants. I could wear these forever.

libertychick Sat 15-Jun-13 15:42:40

Thanks MrsCB. Does anyone know what's the Marant sizing like - only 14 and 16 left, I am a high street 10/12 but I know some higher end brands come up smaller...

liberty Marant tops and jackets certainly seem to come up small so worth trying 14?

MrsCampbellBlack Sat 15-Jun-13 16:44:29

Agree with sleep marant can be small but the Stacey blouse is quite generous.

Go on liberty, join me in shoving on a blouse with jeans and going back to the 90's wink

Good job I'm a size 8 albeit ever so slightly over 22.

Ladyflip Sat 15-Jun-13 17:01:24

As recommended by MN, my best buys have been
a)Toast jeans, very comfortable and wearing well reduced from £95 to £19 in the sale. Sadly, no pics available.
b) this dress which is fantastic for work. Comfortable but very smart and, according to my DH, makes me look like Jessica Rabbit
c) these Gap trousers which are great

libertychick Sat 15-Jun-13 21:11:10

The 90's were my best years MrsCB wink and I did them in lots of boho draped across my then size 16/18 ass!! I was contemplating some desert boots to wear with the Stacy and jeans and the throwback would be complete.

However, after an evening of dithering I have decided against (I think!!) as I am not convinced the colour is right for me and I am planning on getting my colours done soon as I think it will make me more decisive. I have only recently started buying clothes in the Etoile type price bracket and I live in terror of an expensive mistake - in fact I have made quite a few sad.

But thanks again for the tip off thanks

kerstina Sat 15-Jun-13 22:10:00

Elemis beauty flash balm it was a freebie with Red. Liked it so much bought another copy. It is a really good make up base. I have been having problems with clinique city block and sunsense under make up as it just seems to peel off.

EliotNess Sun 16-Jun-13 10:22:26

Ah ye olde Gap slim cropped.

Are ace

EliotNess Sun 16-Jun-13 10:24:28

i like that ines dress a lot lady thing
Is is super stretchy?

noddyholder Sun 16-Jun-13 11:34:36

Gap trousers are useful Bought a couple of bits in cos that I have worn to death!this is lovely tempted to get the grey too. Weather though has caused me problems as I am sick of all my winter stuff but still wearing it!

dexter73 Sun 16-Jun-13 12:21:35

Sod it I'm 40 and a size 12 but don't care if someone I don't know thinks I look like a throwback from the 90's!!

santamarianovella Sun 16-Jun-13 13:51:13

mrscb i would love to have a peak at our closet, bet its awesome.

amazinggg i dont think many 22 year olds can afford Isabel Marant, love her or hate her, but she just nails that boho, parisian look to perfection.almost everything she designs becomes an instant hit.

Tweet2tweet Sun 16-Jun-13 19:34:59

Toast jeans for £10 in sale and a red cashmere John Lewis' cardi for £7 from charity shop. Outfit for under £20, yay!

Mrsrobertduvall Sun 16-Jun-13 19:38:17

My linen supergas
I am going to buy another pair.

Ladyflip Mon 17-Jun-13 10:54:22

Ah yes, Eliot sooper stretchy but really thick jersey so hold you in in all the right places. And it came beautifully packaged - think pink tissue paper and elegant cardboard box. I've had loads of very positive comments on it.

Termsandconditions Mon 17-Jun-13 11:06:29

These sandals are my best buy. Absolutely love them. I would have preferred them in pewter but I still love them. High-ish but v wearable, nice block heel, wear with anything (almost).
