Not unpleasant...but wouldn't be my choice.

I like itsmile but very pricy for a little bag?

certainly pricey for high street. perfect size for me though. must admit price is bothering me a bit.

all the others i like are super expensive.
this is worse than searching for new jeans!

Snowgirl1 Mon 20-May-13 23:02:20

Like the tassels. Doesn't blow me away - especially for the price.

pictish Mon 20-May-13 23:04:04

Blimey - just saw the price!
It looks like good leather...I bet it would last you for years. I don't think I'd want it for years though. My mum would've had that bag.

It's nice but very pricey for the size of it. I bet you could do better for the money

I showed dh without letting him see the price.
He said its just a black bag. Then after showing him the price he looked disapproving grin
I love bags but think it is dull tbh.

If anyone has suggestions I would love to hear them!
Was going to buy Chloe marice mini but can't commit as it is a bit too small, and would have to be ideal for that price.

Would prefer to spend around £200 mark for good leather. Must have decent structure (don't like slouch much) and be small as Hobbs bag with more than one compartment. Something neat and chic, not hobo, etc.

It is driving me a bit mad.

valiumredhead Mon 20-May-13 23:25:18

IMO it's a pricey boring bag. If you are spending a couple of hundred quid you could do better than that easily IMO.

santamarianovella Tue 21-May-13 00:00:43

toasted, I would wait for the sales, good leather bags under£200, are hard to find,AH do good sales specially on cross body or shoulder bags,
The Hobbs is not worth it .

You're probably right.
If it was £50 or thereabouts I might...

Reminds me of Topshop asking near on £200 for a polyester dress because it's 'unique'. Pfffft!

SnookyPooky Tue 21-May-13 06:38:00

A fairly generic black bag really.

bigTillyMint Tue 21-May-13 06:42:03

Totally agree with valium - I bet you could get something similar for a quarter of the price!

I like it in navy. V pricey though, but if its perfect for you and a good size then worth spending to use all the time? I do really really like it actually and if I could spend that on a bag I would (as long as I am carrying things like juice and raisins for my DC though I wouldn't dare...)

I like the natural too. Nice for summer.

iloveweetos Tue 21-May-13 06:54:19

Deffo wait for sales. Agree with everyone else.

noviceoftheday Tue 21-May-13 07:17:32

Toasted, the bag doesn't do anything for me (and I love bags). The mini Marcie is v good cute though. It's about £500 though isn't it? Have you looked at banana republic, coach and aspinal? I would hold on a few weeks for sales as well as more expensive bags might be reduced (I doubt the marnie though!).

Will definitely wait - thanks everyone!

KenDoddsDadsDog Tue 21-May-13 08:21:11

Have you looked at the Tenperley Somerset ones in John Lewis. Some nice ones in there.

KenDoddsDadsDog Tue 21-May-13 08:21:22

temperley

loobylu3 Tue 21-May-13 08:51:37

I have seen it toasted. I like the navy, which has silver hardware and the natural. I'm not so keen on the black personally.
I really liked it and it seems good quality but I decided that it is too expensive and that I would have a look come sale time. If I had the money, I think the mini Marcie would be my bag of choice too.

I know what you mean, Looby, but the Marcie worries me because I already use a tiny fabric bag and all of my stuff rattles around in it (no interior pockets)....keys often fly out too. I'm not sure the Marice is secure, kind of frightened of my phone flying out when I run for a bus!

marcie not marice!

MrsRadicchio Tue 21-May-13 09:15:16

I actually like it quite a lot, esp in navy. Agree it is v expensive though, and wonder about quality - the high street just seems to be getting worse and worse. I'm sure it'll be in the sale though, so may be worth keeping an eye on it if it fits your criteria.

love this

PestoSwimissimos Tue 21-May-13 09:44:36

Well I've got

this one

And it's very versatile as it has detachable leather strap, so you can wear it on your shoulder or across your body, should you prefer.

It's lovely quality too smile

Shinyshoes1 Tue 21-May-13 09:50:13

OP unfortunately I find that bag hideous

pesto that bag is gorgeous !!

I like the black modalu!

do the handles not flap about?

polyhymnia Tue 21-May-13 09:57:12

I have seen the Hobbs bag and really like it in navy. But it is pricy. Have been thinking about getting it if there's a 20% off offer but, even then, will probably leave it. But, if money were no object, I would!

haven't seen that particular Modalu, but the majority of their bags are spoilt for me by their bright and rather obvious 'gold' metalware - too bling for my tastes.

PestoSwimissimos Tue 21-May-13 09:58:07

It is gorgeous, I only bought it recently for DH's funeral sad

But I know I will use it a lot and I haven't found the handles in the way or anything. I like the fact that I can use it as a grab bag too you see.

Nagoo Tue 21-May-13 09:58:26

Boring.

For £200 I'd want to be doing grin this face every time I used it.

polyhymnia Tue 21-May-13 10:07:23

Just checked the Modalu one and it is the small Pippa, which I have and don't really use. (I must try to Ebay). Partly it's the colour - a light grey, which isn't as useful as I hoped, specially in non-summer weather like this. Black or navy would have been a better choice.

Also, as said, am not a fan of the metal work (though that's a very personal thing). And I do also find the two handles a bit cumbersome, tbh.

I think with bags everyone has their likes and dislikes and it's really difficult to know until you see and handle them in RL.

MarshaBrady Tue 21-May-13 10:10:13

Toasted lots of Anya H on the Outnet today. Around £200ish

I'd go for something half price, or in the sales, to get more for your £.

bleedingheart Tue 21-May-13 11:55:28

I like the Maeve in navy.

Have you looked on & Other Stories ? They have a range of black leather bags from £65 -£175, good quality on the whole too.

KenDoddsDadsDog Tue 21-May-13 11:59:15

Love Anya Hindmarch stuff - some nice new ones on the outnet. I love the turquoise iPad holder envy

loobylu3 Tue 21-May-13 12:50:02

I haven' seen the Marcie in real life; I just love the shape of the Chloe bags. Have you looked at See by Chloe for a cheaper alternative?
The Modalu bag is not for me either. I think the gold hardware puts me off and it isn't quite feminine looking for me. Bags are as personal as clothes and what suits one person won't suit another. I think you have to see it and touch it!

I love the AH Valorie clutches and the larger bags, less sure about the small shoulder bags, although haven't seen them in real life so should probably reserve judgement.

whats4teamum Tue 21-May-13 12:58:07

Metalwork on the Modalu makes it look very "marketstall." Sorry.

polyhymnia Tue 21-May-13 15:24:47

Yes that's certainly my view and main reason I regret getting one. But seems to be OK with the Middletons who could presumably afford to buy any brand!

Pesto I'm so sorry to hear that! I lost my dad a few weeks ago, so my heart goes out to you flowers

Do like the Modalu personally, especially the hardware! I still think the Chloe is cute but a bit too small and not exactly worth the price either. True about bags being really personal....I can see the perfect specimen in my mind's eye but cannot locate it anywhere. Oh to be rich and have one created just for me!

MrsMcGregor Tue 21-May-13 18:39:54

I saw that bag in navy - it's the size I want with two separate compartments, which I also want, butl like many others, I think it's a bit pricey for what it is. Now, if it was half price .... smile

the navy seems popular!
the online photo's of navy don't seem to flatter it.
i'm guessing it is nicer in real life?

PestoSwimissimos Tue 21-May-13 18:50:51

Thank you ToastedTeacakes (great name btw!)

It's been hard losing DH and dealing with everything sad

But Team Pesto are strong and we will keep goingmas best we can smile

Sorry for your loss too <<hugs>>

I know someone who has that Hobbs bag in cream. It is very, very nice IRL! I would get it!

Thanks, too, Pesto x

Amber, I really love the cream version but can't see how it would work with any of my outfits. Looks so lovely though!

YoniOno Tue 21-May-13 20:26:02

Nice bag! But far too expensive for high st. Have you looked at Rebecca Minkoff bags? Or Marc by Marc Jacobs? Those two and Michael Kors are the only brands in Selfridges with cross body bags under £250. I had staff running around last weekend grin I decided to wait for sales...

loobylu3 Tue 21-May-13 20:34:31

Goodness pesto- I missed that you have just lost your DH. Wishing you all the strength in the world to look after yourself and your little ones.

Really sorry for your loss too toasted.

Might be worth looking on ebay too..

YoniOno I never get lucky in sales, it seems to be an art I can't perfect grin There are some nice MMJ bags I agree, esp the quilted ones....still can't decide though.

Looby thanks smile

polyhymnia Tue 21-May-13 23:29:29

pesto - me too. So keen to air my own views on bags I didn't pick up on your loss. Really sorry for it and all wishes to you and your DCs.

PestoSwimissimos Wed 22-May-13 08:11:34

Thank you for your wishes, t'is hard but we keep on going. Good luck with the handbag hunt everyone smile

Ive just got this

Its quite big but I love big bags, its loooovely!

That's lovely desperateH! I already have a shopper, but would def consider if I needed one! (although I always prefer it when they come with optional cross body strap - I am fussy)

And oddly, I am still attracted to the Hobbs bag.

Prefer the cream, but wear a lot of navy, so just don't know. The size and design is just ideal for me - I just can't justify a tiny, non pocketed bag like the Chloe, even if it's cute!

I think we Shouldn't be judging it as 'too expensive for high street'. The gulf between high street and designer has narrowed enormously. The quality of Hobbs, Jaegar etc is up there with M by MJ, M Kors etc. I think the fact that it is understated without loads of branding is v attractive.

YoniOno Wed 22-May-13 12:05:01

I disagree - personal taste obviously means someone might prefer the more understated design but the leather quality of M by MJ bags can't be beaten by high st. IMO it's better than many more expensive designer brands. I like many Jaeger / Hobbs designs, Jigsaw also worth a look, but they are overpriced for the quality IMO. Obviously branding doesn't = quality though as we can all agree I'm sure <eyes fab Primark skinnies>

Meh, I've got a couple of Marc by Marc Jacobs bags. They're good, but not amazing. I personally can't see an enormous difference in quality. I think top end high street bags are great, and I speak as someone who buys designer pretty much exclusively. The quality of designer bags seems to be deteriorating in line with the increase in pricing. Coach and Kate Spade seem to be two of the only brands to have retained their quality without astronomical pricing.

I do agree that leather quality of M by MJ better than Mulberry etc though. A lot of the mid range brands are better than the higher end.

But, to be fair, when M by MJ charges £150 for nylon, I don't think £200 for leather is that outrageous.

Just get it Toasted smile

YoniOno Wed 22-May-13 12:27:49

If money were no object I'd get this - but I quite like blingy branding smile

polyhymnia Wed 22-May-13 12:31:32

I agree! Try it. I really covet it, having pored over it in-store more than once.

Don't think all Hobbs bags have a wow factor for the price - generally prefer Russell and Bromley - but this in navyticks all the boxes for a smaller bag for me. Just personally find the expenditure hard to justify at moment so am waiting in hope of offers.

Now that is nice Yoni! I'm not averse to a bit of bling myself - my main issue is that I'm a HoC winter, and ideally need silver hardware, yet all the bling tends to be gold!

YoniOno Wed 22-May-13 12:36:40

I don't know my colours, but also want silver hardware! I like MBMJ classic q bags and some of them have silver hardware. Am stalking some on Ebay atm... slinks back to TPF

I like the Hobbs one.
I like tiny bags, it must be a way of rebelling against motherly big bags.
I dream of this

Think that is the one the OP had her eye on originally.

MarshaBrady Wed 22-May-13 12:46:50

I like this hairy looking fringed Anya Hindmarch.

Like the chain. Fringing could be good or not really.

MarshaBrady Wed 22-May-13 12:47:46

Forget the AH, prefer the small Marcie.

YoniOno Wed 22-May-13 13:05:08

I like the hairy one Marsha! grin Do you know is the strap long enough for cross-body? Is it basically like a mini Gracie?

MarshaBrady Wed 22-May-13 13:11:31

Oh goodo me too! grin

Love the chain. Not sure if it would be long enough. Someone should get it!

that hairy bag would make my cat nervous!

MarshaBrady Wed 22-May-13 13:25:13

Sod the cat! grin

They'd probably be best of friends.

santamarianovella Wed 22-May-13 13:59:31

really lovely hairy bag marsha, and that gucci bag is gorgeous!,some gucci bags do end up in sale, maybe toasted you can check the website on sale time?

polyhymnia Wed 22-May-13 14:18:06

Only like my metalware silver or very minimalist / pale gold.

That mini Marcie is super cute but I'd miss an outside zipped pocket like the Hobbs one has for my Oyster/ metro ticket. How boring am I!

loobylu3 Wed 22-May-13 14:41:54

Hello to amber and marsha.
Although I have never owned a designer or even high end high street bag, I think amber is right that designer bags are v over priced now. I wouldn't mind paying for great quality leather and a beautiful shape/ design but don't want to pay double the price for an obvious brand and lots of bling.

That is one reason why I like the Hobbs bag; it is pretty and fairly understated. It is also v practical, three compartments, I think.

Marsha- much as I love your taste, I really couldn't do that hairy bag! The Gucci is too obviously branded for me. I would feel self conscious and foolish holding it but, again, that's just me.

MarshaBrady Wed 22-May-13 14:47:47

Looby! Lovely to see you on here!

I know on the hairy one. I must admit I first saw it on my iphone and didn't realise it was hairy all over. Loved it when I thought it was just a fringe round the edges. Then thought hmm maybe it won't be so bad. So am on the fence really. Think it's my bad eyesight, I would probably miss the individual strips.

On designer, I like the plainer ones most and am very happy with the Celine trio as not too blingy. And not as much as the ones that are £1k+, which is very high. Although still quite a lot it is true.

polyhymnia Wed 22-May-13 15:00:51

Agree about the Gucci and it's ilk. If I was going to spend that much money I wouldn't want to be a walking ad for the brand - and possibly make myself look a bit naff into the bargain.

polyhymnia Wed 22-May-13 15:02:30

Aargh - 'its' not 'it's ' !!

I think I really want the Hobbs one now.
It's like someone said earlier in the thread, it's just a personal thing, and if you can afford it, probably best to get the one you lean towards. I had a 'treat' budget (to self) of around £400, and even though I could get the Chloe it doesn't really yell at me.

Now I'm stuck between black and cream. I don't want the navy as I wear a lot of dark blue, etc. So bloody confused!

The hairy bag seems to have taken over this thread grin

loobylu3 Wed 22-May-13 17:34:39

Marsha- the Celine trip is absolutely gorgeous- so elegant but just a smidgen over budget. smile

Toasted- get the Hobbs bag. I prefer the natural and would be tempted but it wouldn't really go with my clothes.

polyhymnia Wed 22-May-13 17:39:15

Popped in to check out on that Hobbs bag this afternoon - as nice as ever. Love the different compartments plus outside pocket and hangs just right, on me at least ...

has anyone seen the black Hobbs bag in real life? If so, is it ok? I sense that the navy one is more popular, but need to know if there's something essentially 'wrong' with the black one?????

polyhymnia Wed 22-May-13 22:37:19

Hmm sorry, I'm pretty sure I did the first time I saw them in store and black was fine but can't be 100% sure as it's the navy I'm interested in.

MrsMcGregor Wed 22-May-13 22:43:15

Poly - are you wearing the Hobbs bag over one shoulder or cross body? Maybe it goes both ways? I loved it when I saw it in HoF a month or six weeks ago - 'twas the navy version. I have a pale pink LKB bag so wouldn't see myself using the cream but really want a navy bag.

People complained about the strap length in the Hobbs website reviews of the bag - seemed to wish it was longer. For me personally, I'd prefer it shorter as I hate them banging against my leg.

Have had my eye on this for weeks! Looks better in real life perfect size for weekends with kids. Lovely in the white but am getting the black as soon as I find a discount - did have 15% one in the post but it ran out Monday before I had a chance to get it! Hobbs bags last ages so worth it I think.

Nothing wrong with black just that other colours really nice and maybe more noticeable iyswim. Black more practical really for me. Lovely thick soft leather.

polyhymnia Wed 22-May-13 23:27:11

Alas don't have it yet - also waiting in hope of 20% off but I tried it in store and the strap sits well on shoulder and across body. I'm 5'9'

YoniOno Thu 23-May-13 12:06:42

Hairy bag strap doesn't go cross body sad I did some googling and it's this but hairy. As you were.

michelleandmali Thu 23-May-13 12:17:55

Too zippy I think. It's nice but I think I'd be over it come next season. x

Am still dithering...

loobylu3 Thu 23-May-13 13:26:07

Black is nice too toasted. I personally prefer the navy and natural but, if you look at the stock levels on JL and HoF, it looks as if more people are buying the black.

<whispers> a couple of black on ebay at the moment.

thanks looby!
im no good at ebay unless it's 'buy it now'. grin

oh god ladies why are we so weird and finicky about bags!!!!!!?? why can't i just buy one and shut up!?

polyhymnia Thu 23-May-13 14:12:02

If you buy one online and pick it up at one of the shops you'll save postage etc and you'll be able to return it straight away if it doesn't live up to expectations.

santamarianovella Thu 23-May-13 15:25:54

toasted we all know how you feel, you want a nice quality bag that will last, its not a cheap buy,so your hesitation is very understandable.

MrsMcGregor Thu 23-May-13 22:00:31

Thanks Poly and Toasted for comments on strap length.

Ordered the black. If I don't like it I can take it back to the store. Will let you know how it goes! Thanks for all the opinions.

PestoSwimissimos Fri 24-May-13 09:38:16

Oh glad you've made a decision, let us know what you think when it's arrived.

Exciting smile

thanks pesto, will do!

loobylu3 Fri 24-May-13 18:08:57

Well done on making a decision toasted! Let us know what you think.

The Annabel Ingall bag looks v nice too.

Hello looby - blue has the Hobbs in cream - is gorge!

Toasted glad you went for it!

I like the lots of pockets too. Am using massive M Kors for work ATM and its just like throwing my stuff down a well. Love my mini Gracie, but my laptop won't fit in it!

Hello again... The Hobbs bag arrived this morning (black version) and I couldn't be happier! It is a lovely shape, and doesn't look too overloaded with the zippers at all - i really love that there is even another interior pocket (surprise!) and a little clip hook for keys, etc. It's absolutely ideal for me, really glad i took the plunge.

Leather extremely soft but bag keeps shape really well. Very pleased with quality...thanks again everyone!

polyhymnia Sat 25-May-13 10:46:12

So glad you're pleased - makes me want one even more! Sad, but I love those clips for keys!

Me too! It isn't sad when you are a habitual key loser like myself grin

This ticks every box for me. Was worried I'd hate the tassels but they kind of work well in real life, if that makes sense. I was surprised that I went for it in the end, as many advised against it, so I must have really felt keen. S&B is a great place for finding how just how much you really want a thing after all!

PestoSwimissimos Sat 25-May-13 18:31:01

Great choice then Toasted grin

So pleased it 'ticks all your boxes', it's fab when it works out well. Enjoy!!

loobylu3 Sat 25-May-13 19:37:05

Great news on the bag- so pleased you like it. I will be tempted if it gets reduced, although I need a large bag and not a small one.

MrsMcGregor Thu 30-May-13 21:16:29

Okay a quick question .... will this bag last a couple of seasons (in the navy) or will it look dated this time next year?

I tried it IRL back in March and liked it and it's in my shopping basket just now. Want to put an order through tonight but am worried that it won't do me for long enough to justify the cost, if that makes any sense!

Thanks!
