Saturday night in London - overweight and middle aged, what to wear?

I'm going out in London this Saturday with some friends. I don't go out much in London, and when i do I'm usually in work clothes, so I've no idea what to wear. I'm size 16/18 and 37, definitely apple shaped. I'm getting my hair done in the afternoon, so hopefully that should look fab. What do people wear these days? My normal style is Boden/ Fat Face, but want to look smarter than that. I guess budget could do up to £150. I was wondering about jeans, nice top and heels. I have jeans, what nice top? Or if dress, what dress? It will be need to be available in a good sized town that has a John Lewis and Debenhams, but no House of Fraser, and I can get it at lunchtime tomorrow

I feel so old asking this question!

Day and/or night? What will you be doing? Dinner and a bar? Pubbing and clubbing? Theater?

thegraduand Thu 16-May-13 19:29:36

Sorry, day into night, getting my haircut and coloured at 3 and then meeting friends after that. Dinner somewhere, not booked anything, doubt we will, so not too smart, then nice bars. Won't be clubbing as need to get the train home at some point

PS can't believe I'm asking this, I used to be cool and live in Clapham, those were the days ........

NO to that dress, IMHandrespectfulO.

I forgot to ask about your coloring and what colours you like to wear. Duh. Do you think you'd feel more you in jeans or in a dress? SHall have a gander.

This with jeans? It's out of stock online but might still be around in store.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo to that James Lakeland one: it is monstrous. smile

Feel free to tell me no and not to go near things. I'm really rubbish. Hair is blonde, getting the roots done on Saturday afternoon, complexion is English pasty

Comfortable shoes if you are on your feet all day sightseeing/shopping etc.
I was going to suggest boden but see its your everyday style, just add a nice bag, scarf and sunglasses.

I love all those dresses, the last two are the kind of think I would buy and wear for work, I wasn't sure if they were too office-y for a night out

MrsLettuce Thu 16-May-13 20:09:10

Mmmm a bit better.

fedupofnamechanging Thu 16-May-13 20:13:23

I love that phase eight navy striped one and that black top you linked to.

This

tunic with leggings and heels?

this?

another tunic

No, no to leggings - jeans much better.

top

ubik Thu 16-May-13 20:19:43

jeans and a blazer is a good way to go - don't try to look too 'dressed up',

thegraduand Thu 16-May-13 20:20:33

I like the James Lakeland second one, but worry about lumps and bumps

MrsLettuce Thu 16-May-13 20:25:04

Hows about one of his tops then? With black rather than white though.

thegraduand Thu 16-May-13 20:30:58

Like the whistles top. I think I'm convinced by Jeans, top, possibly blazer and heels, should be able to find that tomorrow lunch time

For shoes

maybe

clarks for comfort

if they fit round the ankle

thegraduand Thu 16-May-13 20:31:37

Oo, like the dotty top, think I need a trying on session in John Lewis to see what fits

I'd avoid wearing new shoes if you're going to be walking around a lot tbh. Could you wear some comfortable flats and take heels to change into? Also, judging by how much rain we've had, sandals might not be ideal! I'm being old and sensible here btw. smile

MrsLettuce Thu 16-May-13 21:50:58

Oh hell yes, avoid new shoes if you can. Might be best to get some folding flats as back if you do go with new heels.

MrsLettuce Thu 16-May-13 22:00:02

Tec fail on the photo front here. Sorry.

MrsLettuce Thu 16-May-13 22:01:27

(wrong thread)

thegraduand Fri 17-May-13 20:45:53

Right, so I had some success

I bought these 2 tops

beige

blue

I"m going to wear the beige one, as I found a blazer I had forgotten about which would look good with it, so I'm getting there. Will definitely be doing flats into heels, but still not sure what shoes because of the rubbish weather

fedupofnamechanging Fri 17-May-13 20:53:51

I love the blue one.
