I have fair skin, light blonde hair, green eyes. Generally wear v subtle make up and akl pinks. I would LOVE to wear a striking lipstick.but they all look rudiculous on me. Can i wear a dark/ a red lipstick or am i forever to wear nudes?!

iamnowawhaticallmother Mon 06-May-13 22:29:42

Sorry. I can spell. Phone terrible. That's ALL pinks. And ridiculous.

Try revlon lip butter in candy apple - it's a gorgeous sheer red, easy to wear and I bet it'd work with your colouring. Keep the rest of your slap to a minimum and it'll be lovely smile

iamnowawhaticallmother Mon 06-May-13 22:35:35

Thank u codswallop! I look fine till i add lippy then... Drag queen.

I know what you mean! It's taken me ages to find one I can wear during the day without feeling like a total painted fool grin - if you try it, come back and let me know if it works?

FrugalFashionista Mon 06-May-13 22:41:17

I have your coloring (cool tones - work out whether you are cool or warm) and a dozen medium pink lipstick in heavy rotation. In theory yes. In practice, I don't like pure reds on me - somehow too harsh and even aging - almost reds (Chanel Coco Rouge Rouge Orage) in winter and deep fuchsias (Cambon, Legende) look 'red' on me but somehow much better.

I sometimes wear a plum lipstick (Chanel Etole) during the dark seasons but it's a bit too dark on me <vampire bride>

MarianForrester Mon 06-May-13 22:45:30

The Kate Moss red for Rimmel is really nice. I have similar colouring and am a make up floozy, but it bears my Chanel one...

currentlyconfuseddotcom Mon 06-May-13 22:48:43

I have similar colouring to you, the experts usually advise reds with a 'blue undertone'.

Can you try a smear of a true red if you're not sure about full coverage?

MarianForrester Mon 06-May-13 22:50:31

Beats, not bears....

FlightyAphrodite Mon 06-May-13 22:52:04

Can I hijack and ask for a red recommendation too? Fair skin with dark hair and eyes, want a nice one for my fifties inspired make up for my wedding...

Revlon fire and Ice lipstick is perfect with fair skin!

iamnowawhaticallmother Tue 07-May-13 09:16:58

i think i have warm colourings ... but not sure. i will tan easily now the sun comes out and im probably going to tone down the very light hair. the only lipstick that has been daring that suits me is a fluorescent almost pink colour by Givenchy. but reds.... look horrid. i see holly Willoughby looking gorgeous wearing one and think - why cant it look good on me?! i look like a scary clown. not a big problem i know - but 31 soon and sick to death of never being different from 'mute nudes'

MrsLettuce Tue 07-May-13 09:22:14

Flighty Mac Ruby Woo is the perfect matte retro red.

comelywenchlywoo Tue 07-May-13 09:32:39

I was going to say Mac Ruby Woo is supposed to be the go-to red lippy, but I see Mrs has beaten me to it!

Lisa Eldridge does a tutorial on red lips. Have a look, but I would heartily recommend looking at her other videos - she gives excellent advice.

(not that I'm confident in red lippy, but I have bad skin)

TallulahBetty Tue 07-May-13 09:35:38

I second Revlon lip butter in Candy Apple. Lovely sheer colour but definitely red. I've always been scared of red lipstick but this is a revelation smile

flipchart Tue 07-May-13 09:37:41

Go to the Mac or Bobby Brown counter and get them to pick the one that is right for you. They have some great colours.

ExRatty Tue 07-May-13 10:25:55

Sometimes though not often I wear a bright red chanel lipstick
flat base eyeliner and mascara
Lipstick is Rouge Allure Dragon..blue based old school glam glam glam red

ZaraW Tue 07-May-13 11:03:36

I use Stila Logan Berry. Easy to apply as it comes in the pen applicator.

EmpressMaud Tue 07-May-13 11:22:21

I'm fair also, with blue eyes. I usually wear a nude lipstick, Bobbi Brown in Nude. However, I've just tried a red (mentioned here), and it is actually quite subtle, the Revlon Candy Apple.

yes yes to Ruby Woo

I'm always on the look out for a new red - thanks for the recommendation of Candy Apple! It's on the list.

LadyBigtoes Tue 07-May-13 12:03:08

I'm also v. fair OP and wanted to try a bright red that didn't look daft. My suggestion is clinique chubby stick in Ten Ton Tomato. It's v sheer and almost like a lip balm, so it won't last ages, but the orangey red is great with pale skin, I love it.

showerhead Tue 07-May-13 13:30:29

i was going to say try the Clinique chubby sticks intense. My colouring is different to yours but although i wore very red lipstick throughout my 20s i got out of the habit as a mum and now find i look too painted in it. To remedy this I am getting back into it by using fairly sheer reds to start with. I got the clinique consultant to try out several shades on me until I found one i really liked. Recently i bought No7s sheer temptation in Glam which is a lovely sheer red that works for me as an everyday lippy.
I'll have to check out the Candy apple suggestion next!

Everyone's talking about this Revlon stuff! I went out with my friend on sunday night, she'd read about it in a magazine and bought one for herself. Really is gorgeous, I need to get to Boots and get some.

I so wanted to love Ruby Woo, but whatever I do it goes on like chalk sad

I had a chubby stick in Super Strawberry and lost the bastard thing straight away! It was lovely and I want another one. I'll check out the reds, I went straight to the pink...

kiwigirl42 Tue 07-May-13 14:45:55

Kate Moss Rimmel lipstick in #1 is a lovely, matte, blue toned red. Its widely touted as a dupe for Ruby Woo but supposed to be not quite so matte and drying as the MAC. I have pale skin, hazel eyes and dark hair and it works well with my skin tones

mirai Tue 07-May-13 14:48:41

I love the lip butters! I've just ordered the Candy Apple and also Creme Brulee grin

OrchidFlakes Tue 07-May-13 15:13:17

Have a look at Sleek, their red Vixen is fab! I'm pastie fair, blue eys, dark hair and I love it

Ashoething Tue 07-May-13 15:50:34

i just got a free avon lipstick with marie claire and its lovely.called red shimmer i think.i have tried loads ofs reds too.revlon kissable balm in romantic is good for an everyday red.

AlwaysSleepingBeauty Tue 07-May-13 16:51:08

I'm very fair and I'm obsessed with red lipstick. I love MAC Ruby Woo and Russian Red, I also like Dior Diva lipstick for a slightly softer but stil classic red and Laura Mercier Audrey for a much more subtle take on red.

shufflehopstep Tue 07-May-13 16:52:51

What's the colour of your favourite ever outfit that everybody always comments on? This should indicate whether your warm or cool colouring. As you're blonde and fair skinned you will also have light colouring rather than dark. Then you find your "season". Warm and light = spring (peachy pinks, lime greens, turquoise, daffodil yellow - think spring flowers), cool and light = summer (pastel shades, lemon yellow, powder blue, mint green - colours that remind you of ice-cream), warm and dark = autumn (auburn tones, bronze, navy and dark green, orange and brown like autumn leaves) , cool and dark = winter (colours like dark blues, black, dark reds and purples making you think of icy cold snowy nights).

If you have cool colouring, you can wear either summer or winter colours but if you're wearing winter colours you have to make sure that you balance your bold lips with a bold colour somewhere else like your shoes or jewellery. The same goes for spring / autumn. This might be why it seems overpowering. It could just be what you choose to wear with it.

clareanna Tue 07-May-13 17:09:57

for a cheapy to try check out Seventeen in showbiz. I'm also fair and blonde and someone in Boots gave me it to try - very different look for me, and I didn't want to spend more when I wasn't sure I'd wear it again

YoniAsOldAsYoFeel Tue 07-May-13 19:27:14

I recommend Clarins Red. It looks quite dark in the tube but it's lovely once on, and lasts a long time too.

scottishmummy Tue 07-May-13 19:34:01

Clinique red-y to wear so good

babybarrister Tue 07-May-13 21:11:22

do Boots stock Revlon lip butters?

Crunchymunchyhoneycakes Tue 07-May-13 21:23:53

I have a Rimmel Kate moss one, lovely texture and colour

motherinferior Tue 07-May-13 21:41:24

Or try Revlon kissable balm stain in Romantic - a truer red than Candy Apple imo, which I find a bit corally - and/or the matte red Revlon lipstick in Really Red, which is fabulous.

MrsLettuce Tue 07-May-13 21:45:22

(just get the Mac Ruby woo, you won't be disappointed)

i have the kate moss one and the Marie Clare Avon one.
Dark brown hair, dark hazel eyes. Pale freckled skin.
Very thin mouth. I look like a hooker in it sad

My best red is a sheer wine red (No7 Opulant)

reindeesandchristmastrees Tue 07-May-13 22:10:31

There is a mother at school who is v fair with dark hair who wears a shockingly red lipstick and it looks truly hideous. I hope she is a m'netter and reads this thread. I don't know her well but I always think 'she hasn't got a best friend' as you'd think someone would tell her how bad it looks. Sorry, bit off topic but i think I'm trying to say please ask the opinion of someone who'll tell you the truth before wearing the lipstick in public

TallulahBetty Tue 07-May-13 22:14:02

Yes babybarrister they do smile

MrsKoala Tue 07-May-13 22:23:50

i have dark hair and fair skin with green/blue eyes (i'm a cool/winter colouring) and i wear Dior Indian Red. I get lots of compliments on the colour.

dontyouwantmebaby Tue 07-May-13 23:51:13

I have the exact same colouring as you OP and I recently-ish started wearing red instead of my usual nude/pink colours. I have loved wearing MAC Russian Red, out of all I've tried this is my fave. Tried Ruby Woo which I like but somehow the finish on RR suits me better.

Have also got Lipstick Queen Saint Red, I like the colour a lot however have found the packaging has got on my nerves as the lid doesn't stay on properly (maybe I got a dodgy batch) so I don't tend to carry this one around with me so have hardly worn it.

Lipstick Queen do another nice red which I considered buying but didn't in the end, its called Medieval if I remember correctly and its their version of a 'red that suits anyone', like a 'red for beginners' I think they mean smile. I'd go to a make-up counter and ask them to try some samples out on you so you can see what suits and what you're comfortable with.

unapologetic Wed 08-May-13 09:00:06

I generally look hideous in red lipstick. However I have got a corally red from Estee Lauder (no 59 portofino coral) and it looks lovely. I wore it to a family occasion and my daughters kept saying, mum you look different (in a good way) and I looked passable in the photos.

cressetmama Wed 08-May-13 12:33:38

Hollywood Red (540) from Maybelline is a gentle pinky red. As other posters have said, MAC has a huge range of reds (but they tend to be drying on me); of these I like best a light orange-y red called Frost. I'm fair-haired, blue eyes but olive skinned BTW.

ygritte Wed 08-May-13 21:25:59

Clinique Parisian red...check out the make up alley reviews...brilliant. I tried Chantecaille Rose Delice lip chic today and wondered why I ever needed a red when this suited me so much better.

SorrelForbes Wed 08-May-13 23:10:19

I've tried all the MAC, Chanel, Revlon and Kate Moss ones mentioned on this thread and they all look terrible. Very aging and drag queeny! I am fair skinned but slightly olivey of complexion, green eyes and and brown hair. I have thin lips which doesn't help.

Guerrillacrochet Thu 09-May-13 02:50:52

I love Ruby Woo and Russian Red but find them a bit drying. However I did get Mac's Viva Glam 1 recently and it is a beautiful red that has a bit more moisture- it looks quite dark and subdued in the tube, but has a lovely vintagey effect when I put it on- very Mad Men (pale warm tones, blonde and blue eyes, so it might work for you).

SorrelForbes Thu 09-May-13 07:50:26

Thanks. Alas, I've tried that one too but it didn't look any better than the others. I think the main problem is that I have crap lips!

Catlike Thu 09-May-13 08:58:37

I agree with Sorrel that strong coloured, old school lipsticks can be very harsh and ageing. And I don't think any of the red lipsticks that supposedly suit every colouring really do look fantastic on everyone. Whenever I've bought something recommended on that basis (often from a Sali Hughes column), it's never looked amazing on me and I've always ended up giving it away.

Revlon lip butters are REALLY flattering though! I haven't tried the reds but have a bright coral and bright fuchsia pink. Lipsticks in those shades would look awful on my 36 year old face even if the shade was right for my colouring (gave away a Sali Hughes recommended coral lipstick because it was too OTT although the shade itself was good).

But the lip butters are lovely and sheer and seem to have a brightening effect for the whole face. They are far fresher looking and less ageing than lipstick IMO. Would definitely recommend trying their reds out, I plan to do so myself asap grin

SorrelForbes Thu 09-May-13 09:49:29

Catlik You've convinced me to try the Revlon lip butters again. I'll pop into town tomorrow and have a trying on session!

ellajayne Thu 09-May-13 09:55:33

Maybelline's 14 Hour lipstick in Non Stop Red is a very wearable light red for pale skins day to day. For more impact go straight to MAC and ask to try on Ruby Woo. It's a matte texture so you need a good scrub and lip balm but it is the ultimate suits-all red.

ellajayne Thu 09-May-13 09:56:42

Ooh yes! Also the Kate Moss for Rimmel matte in 107 is a beautiful deep red. It's Demi-matte but half the price of the MAC lipstick and lasts just as well, just a more berry toned colour.

SorrelForbes Thu 09-May-13 09:56:47

ellajayne Hmmm, I've tried Ruby Woo at least 5 times and it looks bloody awful on me. Fantastic on a couple of my friends though.

ellajayne Thu 09-May-13 09:58:19

What about MAC Viva Glam which is similar to Ruby Woo but slightly different in tone or Lady Danger for a more orange toned red? Illamasqua Sangers is another very wearable red.

SorrelForbes Thu 09-May-13 10:00:55

Yep, got the Kate Moss reds in 107 and 111 and both are terrible on me.

I do a bit of the old amateur theatricals and for most shows I wear Max Factor lip finity in 120. It looks fine onstage especially for a vintage, showgirl look but I could never wear it it RL.

SorrelForbes Thu 09-May-13 10:03:53

Nope, tried Russian Red and Viva Glam and hated both. Even the MAC assistant agreed they didn't suit me. I'm 43 and most people tell me I don't look more than 30 (I'm playing an 18 year old in my next show deluded) but honestly all those lipsticks made me look about 55.

Lady Danger sounds a possibility so I'll check that out, thanks.

iamnowawhaticallmother Thu 09-May-13 11:24:35

Hi all - thanks for all your advice. I tried the Revlon Candy Apple ... and nope! I still look like a whore / man in drag. Oh woe is me! I might see if the people at MAC can help me - but i fear I am doomed for pinks forever. In other news - I now have warm dark golden hair and a bit of a tan - so the pinks are looking better. Thanks for all your advice. This forum is great!

JeanPaget Thu 09-May-13 11:30:27

I love Revlon Cherries in the Snow, it's got an almost pink-y tone to it that I think is really flattering. It's much less drying than the MAC ones.

fridgepants Thu 09-May-13 22:58:42

Ruby Woo is way too bright on me - it kind of sits on my face instead of being part of out iyswim - I prefer Russian Red, Lady Bug and Brave Red.

1gglePiggle Thu 09-May-13 23:07:54

If you want a cheapie try Miss Sporty Dr Balm in sweet kiss SOS. It's a nice sheer red, doesn't last on lips long but only a couple of quid. It's a good gentle way of starting to wear red!

JustinBiebermakesmevom Fri 10-May-13 08:34:03

I'd love to get away with red lipstick (have similar colouring to OP, short blonde hair, green eyes) but unfortunately I'm prone to hormonal break outs on my chin. At the moment I have something resembling a meteorite on the right side of my chin....I do think a red lippy can suit any colouring but only if your chin is pretty much perfect....

comelywenchlywoo Fri 10-May-13 14:46:48

If you are considering getting a Revlon lippy, pop to Boots, put your advantage card in the special machine, print off the £2 off lipstick voucher and get your lippy for £2 less. I don't know how long the offer lasts but I did it today when I succumbed to MN S and B peer pressure yet again

SorrelForbes Fri 10-May-13 15:41:22

Oh thanks, will pop to Boots tomorrow!

babybarrister Fri 10-May-13 22:58:51

I just got the Revlon lip butter cqandy apple - nice colour - thanks S and B ...

Catlike Sat 11-May-13 09:07:10

Same here! It's lovely smile Has the teeniest tiniest gold flecks in, which make it very pretty and forgiving to wear.

It's 3 for 2 at revlon in boots at the moment too...

Sounds like you are cooler toned TBH. I am warm toned and can't wear bright pinks as they look very odd.

There is a red out there for you! My personal favourite is this one which is not a brown toned as it looks.

I can't find a swatch of it online as most blogs are not allowed in work. If you have an Illamasqua counter/store near you I would urge you to visit them - I much prefer their reds to MAC, and they have lots of variations.

Acually this pic gives you a better idea of different colours.

SorrelForbes Sat 11-May-13 16:56:08

Ok, I've just bought the Revlon Candy Apple. Lovely. I think it's the sheerness that makes it wearable on me.

mrsblakey Sat 11-May-13 18:16:33

just bought the revlon candy apple too !!

TallulahBetty Sat 11-May-13 18:33:37

There must be a national shortage by now!!

SorrelForbes Sat 11-May-13 19:48:50

I got the last Candy Apple in the very large Boots where I live. There was another lady trying the tester and I leant across her and took the last one blush

scottishmummy Sat 11-May-13 22:16:00

good for you, after all,you snooze you lose

comelywenchlywoo Sat 11-May-13 22:40:34

I had to try two Boots to get mine. The first one only had a tester and one that clearly had been used (yuk).

I'm really in love with this lippy. Lovely and sheer, but with a pop of colour. Thank you S&B!

SorrelForbes Sat 11-May-13 23:26:31

comely. You're not in the SW are you? The tester in my boots was in an awfully yucky state

comelywenchlywoo Sun 12-May-13 08:45:07

sorrel you're not suggesting it was you who used the second lipstick because the tester was so yucky are you?!!!! wink

No I'm in Scotland - it must be MNers the length of the country rushing out to try Revlon Candy Apple. I wonder if Boots have notice a spike in sales?

SorrelForbes Sun 12-May-13 08:56:28

No! I just grabbed the last wrapped one grin

JustinBiebermakesmevom Sun 12-May-13 23:38:08

To everyone that has bought the Revlon Candy Apple lippy and is loving it - do you use a lipliner with it ? The problem with red lipstick I have is that when I use a lipliner it can end up looking too made up but when I don't it just looks as thought I've been eating a red ice lolly. Think I've got funny lips as they definitely need some kind of definition...I always use a lip liner with my nude or pink lippies

mirai Mon 13-May-13 02:09:04

You can use a nude lip liner with a red lippy, it'll help you look 'finished' but won't give you the bold OTT effect of using a red liner!

comelywenchlywoo Mon 13-May-13 09:15:27

I've not been using liner, but have been using the "edge" of the bullet to draw a crisper line around the edges.

mirai Fri 17-May-13 09:37:00

Just to say my Candy Apple has just been delivered and OH MY GOD I absolutely LOVE it!! It's perfect, a nice bold colour but not as matte or heavy as a lipstick, so it has a nice gloss that makes it less formal and scary to red lippy first timers!

The only problem is I think I now want the entire lip butter collection shock grin

SorrelForbes Fri 17-May-13 10:28:46

I've worn mine a couple of times this week. I do like it and I'm sure I'll wear it again but it definitely makes me look older/harder.

I read this thread and picked up a Candy Apple too! I have about 10 lip butters, but not a red one. I don't like it as much as some of my others, but it's the most wearable bright red lipstick I have, it will be lovely with a bit of a tan in summer smile

SchnitzelVonKrumm Sun 26-May-13 23:03:09

Bobbi Brown 'Red' is v.good for pale, cool skin tones.

AlwaysSleepingBeauty Mon 27-May-13 00:36:38

I've recently bought Lipstick Queen Deep Red Sinner and it might actually be my perfect red, I would highly recommend it.
