What to wear over very pale legs in summer with skirts??

My legs are not fit to go bare - pale, blotchy and 40+

In winter I wear black opaques - but what can I wear with summer skirts?

DearPrudence Thu 25-Apr-13 15:22:03

I was looking at a nice skirt just today, and had exactly the same thought. Waiting for someone to come along with the magic answer.

freddiefrog Thu 25-Apr-13 15:27:50

Fake tan?

My legs are also pretty awful so use a squizz of fake tan. Not enough to look orange, just enough to lose the dazzle from the whiteness

I just get my legs out. My right leg is heavily scarred but they are my legs and if I what them out I will grin

allmycats Thu 25-Apr-13 15:30:09

Natural looking tights - evens out the skin tone and, if you are of a larger size stops naked thighs rubbing together.

heronsfly Thu 25-Apr-13 15:32:49

I'm interested in any suggestions as well,, my legs are bad too, scar running all along inside of left leg and generally old, pale and blotchy grin, I love the new trend of leggings under skirts and dresses but too hot in summer.

SinisterSal Thu 25-Apr-13 15:33:50

Holiday skin type stuff?

I use Sally Hanson airbrushed legs. Fake tan doesn't work for me but this just removes the milk whiteness and evens out skintone.

Lottapianos Thu 25-Apr-13 15:35:19

A really good moisturiser smile That's all I do. I gave up fake tan a few years ago and haven't looked back. Exfoliate and moisture well and you will be fine

MrsMills Thu 25-Apr-13 15:35:24

MAC face and body foundation. Makes my legs look less shockingly white with no orange streaks or obvious fakery. Just 'normal' legs.

StuckOnARollercoaster Thu 25-Apr-13 15:40:38

While its still a bit chilly there are two options - long boots (no tights but trainer socks inside!) or natural looking tights.
Once its warm I will go bare, even though I am very pale. I start about now getting my legs into a nice condition - exfoliate (lots of attention of ankles and soles of feet and moisturise.
I try to buy skirts and shoes that go with my pale skin, but at the start of the season I will use a bit of tinted lotion (I really like Benefit Jiffy Tan which isn't too dark, but washes of rather than being a fake tan with that funny fake tan smell that stays for a few days)
After a few weeks out in the open(not last year!!!) my legs are naturally a bit less pale and look better even though they never look 'tanned', but match the rest of my pale face and arms!!!

CheesyPoofs Thu 25-Apr-13 15:44:54

Leggings

megandraper Thu 25-Apr-13 15:46:15

hmm, natural tights. A voice in my head is screaming 'NOT AMERICAN TAN TIGHTS!'

But I am sure there is a more natural type of natural. Any tips?

LadyBigtoes Thu 25-Apr-13 15:47:27

Same here- super pale, 40+ legs.

I will wear knee-length or just below the knee dresses with bare legs. Like rollercoaster says, prepare the legs and you can improve them a lot - - if you can be arsed - wax, exfoliate, moisturise, and use one of those shimmery oil leg sprays. I sometimes also use a bit of that very light fake tan that develops gradually, just for a pale golden effect, not an actual tan. Also I love choosing nice sandals and wearing bright toenail polish in summer. Jazz things up at the foot/toe end and distract attention from the legs.

I also wear mini-dresses / long tunic tops with leggings or cropped jeans, I like this look as I'm not happy to show off my knees.

LadyMountbatten Thu 25-Apr-13 15:48:00

Just get them out in the garden.

Honestly !

LadyBigtoes Thu 25-Apr-13 15:48:15

But I don't do tights. I love my woolly winter opaques but I can't stand how "flesh" coloured/"summer" tights look.

dexter73 Thu 25-Apr-13 15:50:48

Just go bare legged - nothing will happen if you do!

second sally hansen, is brilliant stuff

BranchingOut Thu 25-Apr-13 15:55:44

I have just got a pair of light beige-tan spring boots.
Some people swear by nude fishnets. Or hold ups.
Mostly I just hope that no one is looking too closely!

megandraper Thu 25-Apr-13 15:57:39

I like the sound of your boots Branching out - where are they from? (if you don't mind me asking)

LovedayMerryweather Thu 25-Apr-13 16:25:42

I go for dark, unshaven leg hair. I think it suits me. No one has ever said anything, anyway.

GypsyFloss Thu 25-Apr-13 16:57:42

I love St Tropez gradual tanner for taking the glow off my legs and then I let the sun at them. It's the only tanner that doesn't streak on me but I do have to scrupulously exfoliate with their body polish first.

scripsi Thu 25-Apr-13 17:05:40

I do use very thin summer tights and thanks to MN I also have nude fishnets. I absolutely hate wearing shoes with bare feet.

Pandsbear Thu 25-Apr-13 17:13:01

Why worry? No-one is looking anyway! (I hope)

FrugalFashionista Thu 25-Apr-13 17:16:42

Sheer black tights are all the rage in Italy right now, most commonly worn with cutoffs paired with flats, converse or slouchy summer weight suede boots. Temperatures around 25C, tourists lobster red in shorts and flipflops.

I saw someone looking super chic in a gauzy ankle length plisse skirt yesterday.

JenaiMorris Thu 25-Apr-13 17:21:54

Nude fishnets are far nicer than ordinary tights.

I have the same problem - I'm at a loss as to what to wear for work every single year.

superfluouscurves Thu 25-Apr-13 17:32:55
superfluouscurves Thu 25-Apr-13 17:34:40

.. meant to add, good quality nude tights are fine for today's weather but unpleasant to wear when it's really hot and sunny

arf at Loveday

PrincessOfChina Thu 25-Apr-13 17:40:10

At this time of year I wear nude rights - I like the M&S hold you in jobbies.

I've just been in a hot country for a week with work and used a Rimmel wash off tan. It went on really well and didnt smudge off or anything.

dexter73 Thu 25-Apr-13 17:45:52

FrugalFashionista - do you mean cut off jeans? That sounds like a very strange look to me. I can't quite picture cut offs, tights and converse!

DearPrudence Thu 25-Apr-13 17:47:30

Hmm, nude fishnets you say? Yes, I like it.

BranchingOut Thu 25-Apr-13 18:05:12

Mine are a pair of Hobbs boots that I was lucky enough to pick up in a charity shop. However, Boden were doing something similar last year, which is where I got the idea.

MillyMollyMandy78 Thu 25-Apr-13 18:08:28

I have the same problem and hate most nude look tights. I end up just hiding my legs away all summer... Not good. However, last year I read a review for the most natural looking tights ever. They are by a company called Faulke and you can buy them online. I have actually just ordered a couple more pairs for this summer.
They are AMAZING... Nobody ever knows I am wearing tights unless I actually tell them. They look like your own legs but without the blotchy/ ill look. They are £10 per pair but even though they are very fine, they don't ladder very easily, and 2 pairs can easily see me through a whole summer of skirts and dresses.

AnonYonimousBird Thu 25-Apr-13 18:13:55

I got some gorgeous suntan tights from M&S last week - they look like they are hardly there, lovely and smooth....

Poodlehorse Thu 25-Apr-13 18:29:15

I haven't tried the airbrush legs but I keep hearing they are the puppy's nuts etc but I have discovered the gradual tanner from No7. Not cheap but they say you don't need to exfoliate etc and it contains some antioxidant to help you tan better (?) but it gives a lovely hint of colour. You need to be quite generous with it to make it show up at all but I think it gives a much better colour with no blotchiness than normal gradual tanners and it is really good at moisturising. It's the only one I have kept on using every day. It is just enough to make them look less milkbottle without me having to do the rest of me.

redmayneslips Thu 25-Apr-13 20:12:53

Ladies, can I jump in here? I have a small varicous vein in middle of the back of calf since I was pregnant 7 years ago. I have not worn a skirt apart from with thick opaque tights since. This year I have treated myself to a lovely pair of the boden pewter mary janes and I can't wear dark tights with them. So I have been tempted to try the sally hansen leg makeup - will it cover thread veins and the bluey colour of the other vein or do I need something else?

I have good legs and this really bothers me - would love to find a solution to it this year!

Sally Hansen covers blueyness and as its buildable you can put more over particular bits. Apply it with a mitt and you can usually pick it up for about £6 in Tesco.

Tights under trousers is jolly uncomfortable and sweaty. urgh

MarianForrester Thu 25-Apr-13 20:26:04

Leggings. Sometimes just below knee ones on rare occasions it's actually not freezing. Wee bit fake tan so as not to scare people.

superfluouscurves Thu 25-Apr-13 20:29:33

Agree with MillyMolly Falke nude tights are the business

(still find them too hot in summer though) apart from formal occasions etc

LadyMountbatten Thu 25-Apr-13 20:35:02

Red. Who cares?
Don't apologise for your body. Out and proud

AvrilPoisson Thu 25-Apr-13 20:37:26

Where does one get decent leggings from then (that won't go baggy after a couple of washes!)
I am short, so calf- length for others will be ankle-length on me...

Is a dress/leggings combo smart enough for work? (Not blue chip, but not casual either!)

AvrilPoisson Thu 25-Apr-13 20:41:21

very easy to say when you have lovely pins LadyM! wink
Do you wear leggings to work? Is it allowed?

I am always too cold to wear skirts/dresses... leggings would help a great deal.

LadyMountbatten Thu 25-Apr-13 21:25:48

I could. I wouldn't.
Have the v v done. Or use make up. Get that scar covering stuff

JaxTellerIsAllMine Thu 25-Apr-13 21:59:07

The Sally Hansen airbrush legs is amazing stuff. It makes me not care about my legs and I do get them out.

Although the past few days I have had them bare in the garden to try to get the blueness away. grin

FrugalFashionista Thu 25-Apr-13 22:13:07

This style is the normative street look in Rome and apparently also Milan right now - sheer (sheerer than in the pic) black tights worn with denim cut-off shorts (often with frayed edges). Footwear varies, have seen converse, slouchy suede boots and various types of flat shoes. No coat atm, any top goes but no skimpy vests.

I've also seen sheer black tights combined with discreet trainers (black vintage Airmax) and a simple black knee-length skirt and a simple top - at the opera! Incredibly chic...

PetiteMum Thu 25-Apr-13 22:26:36
LadyMountbatten Thu 25-Apr-13 22:36:51

Tights with shorts is hardly new

FrugalFashionista Thu 25-Apr-13 22:40:07

It's not new, it's been fashionable for a couple of seasons now, but sheer black is definitely back and a way to deal with pasty pre-beach season skin.

VerySmallSqueak Thu 25-Apr-13 22:45:54

Do nude fishnets look very fishnetty or does is it to 'fool' the eye?

auldspinster Thu 25-Apr-13 23:11:49

They do fool the eye, you have to be pretty close up to notice.

VerySmallSqueak Thu 25-Apr-13 23:16:48

Sounds worth a try auld.

I think a lot of people have been a bit shocked at the sudden bareness of legs over the last few days and we really haven't got used to it yet.

Silverstar2 Fri 26-Apr-13 07:48:44

I have red patches due to a skin condition on my shins, have done for years. I cannot wax, or fake tan, because the colour is too uneven. Even shaving is tricky, so I only do it during the summer months when i have too! I just wear skirts, and find the older I get the less I care. I do a lot of spin classes/cycling, so have quite, erm.....'chunky' calves too...... i try to waer nice skirts, sandals and paint my toe nails, and try to distract! But if you really feel the need, a bit of holiday skin or something is good - I tried it once, and it was good on my 'normal' bits of shin, but not on the red bits.

The one bit of advice I have though, that I swear by, is that no-one is looking at you as they are all too worried about their own insecurities!

Good luck!

LadyMountbatten Fri 26-Apr-13 07:49:28

Hooray for silver!

dexter73 Fri 26-Apr-13 07:54:06

Of course you mean shorts!! Duh! I had it in my head that you meant sort of 3/4 length cut off jeans. Denim shorts and tights is a look favoured by the teenagers here not the mums!

JaxTellerIsAllMine Fri 26-Apr-13 07:59:26

My DD loves the tights and shorts look as do many teen girls where I live. Not for me though, Id be muttony. grin

I have a little bottle of St Tropez gradual tan, going to give it a go over the weekend and I will report back. Havent had much luck with grad tan or fake tan. Always ends up streaky/patchy, despite moisturising, scrubbing etc.

MrsMills Fri 26-Apr-13 08:00:34

The cut off shorts with sheer black tights is standard school wear here for girls from around 14 upwards. Preferably with the scruffier of converse or sandshores. Teamed with the biggest beanie hat you can find. I don't th

MrsMills Fri 26-Apr-13 08:01:23

I don't think I've seen anyone over the age of 21 wearing this look (am in Stockholm).

SomeRainbow Fri 26-Apr-13 08:01:45

Nude micronet fishnets. They sort of fool the eye but I also think they look quite funky up close.

megandraper Fri 26-Apr-13 08:03:11

Thanks for the links!

I will check out the Faulke tights, and also looking at the Uniquo cropped leggings - are they good ones, do they bag/pile?

Can anyone give me a link/brand name for some nude fishnets. Tried typing it into Amazon and got a load of Playboy-bunny style stuff, which is not really the look I'm after...

FrugalFashionista Fri 26-Apr-13 08:36:01

Jax and MrsMills it's a young look here too (I live next door to a private university and the girls there embrace the tights+cutoffs look) but it has made sheer black tights fashionable for all - they aren't deeply middle aged any mnore. Many people here have very pale winter skin now, it will change after a couple weekends on the beach to mahogany, but people are definitely unwilling to flash skin right now although it's very warm.

Dexter this type of cutoff / culotte seems to fashionable too right now (Acne do them among others), but you tend to see them on fashionistas as they are quite tricky to wear.

I used to wear white and nude fishnets and they are quite popular among office workers here. The tighter netted ones tend to look a bit bizarre up close (weird skin texture). I loved this type, but they can be quite unforgiving if your legs are not very toned.

LivesInLegoland Fri 26-Apr-13 08:40:25

Nude fishnets all the way for me!

RescueCack Fri 26-Apr-13 14:12:23

I just wear my skin. It's grey/blue. I'm not ashamed of it. smile

ElectricSheep Fri 26-Apr-13 15:52:22

I like nude fishnets or Sally Hansen spray on legs - you can blend it over even the pastiest of legs.

frankietwospots Mon 24-Feb-14 09:08:23

This has been such a useful thread! Off to check out Sally Hansen today.
