Thinking of buying these:

or are they completely and utterly grim?

EuroShopperEnergyDrink Wed 24-Apr-13 18:18:29

Oh bloody 'ell

nipersvest Wed 24-Apr-13 18:29:08

i have those in blue, i don't find them quite as comfy as people say they are, and the fit is quite wide, but i do wear them a lot in the summer.

BeaLola Wed 24-Apr-13 18:29:45

I love them - I buy a new pair every year (sometimes two !) & wear them thoughout summer & on all holidays - really comfortable.

I think though they are like marmite - you either love or hate them.

MissMogwi Wed 24-Apr-13 18:29:54

I love my Birkenstocks. So comfy (once you've worn them in) and I wear them to death in the 'summer'.

Those are nice and will go with everything, I'd get them.

greenteawithlemon Wed 24-Apr-13 18:30:56

I like them! Super comfy.

ScienceRocks Wed 24-Apr-13 18:34:22

I can't get on with that style. The gizeh ones, however, are rarely off my feet in summer. I love them. It's only fair to warn you that there is no way back though. Once you have worn Birkenstocks, pretty much all other sandals and flip flops feel horribly uncomfortable.

alienbanana Wed 24-Apr-13 18:35:32

I like mine.. they are wide though.

Check your sizing - iirc they come up large.

EuroShopperEnergyDrink Wed 24-Apr-13 18:36:30

They are very practical, will be buying them for a trip to Tunis. Will also get some wear out of them for my summer job.

My friend had some lovely tan gizehs which I would so copy but I can't find them anywhere.

hattymattie Wed 24-Apr-13 18:38:18

I looked at those last saturday and think I'll get them - I know they're not the most beautiful sandal but had pair once before and they are sooo comfy when it hits 30°

mewkins Wed 24-Apr-13 18:41:22

I live in them in the summer. Mainly because they are the only sandals I have found which don't rub. Who wants to be too hot AND have blisters on their feet?
Just bought a pair of white madrids to add to my collection.

TheSecondComing Wed 24-Apr-13 18:44:23

Message withdrawn at poster's request.

Merle Wed 24-Apr-13 18:47:04

You can order them narrow. I have a silver pair. I was thinking of getting another pair, but thought it a bit excessive - TheSecondComing really? You must live somewhere hot?!

piratecat Wed 24-Apr-13 18:48:52

I live in them, have four pairs of 'relax' ones that are similar to the madrids, but i found them narrower.

i have to have arch support (plantar fasciitis prob) so they are great.

I have cerise, white, silver and black. hth

tk max often have them in

mrssmooth Wed 24-Apr-13 18:51:02

Love mine! I have them in purple. I would break them in though - wear them round the house with socks on .. I had to make an unplanned long walk in mine the first or second time I wore them and my feet were in bits! Once they're broken in, they are very comfy. (Although mine do tend to get a bit smelly too blush - is it just me?!)

DD has banned me from buying a pair this summer. She alleges they are granny shoes.

Winceywoo Wed 24-Apr-13 18:55:15

I love them, got about six pairs in different colours. Love the patent best. My only complaint is they (well mine, anyway) get a bit smelly towards the end of summer. I'm hoping its because I'm always greasing up my feet with cream as I have a deep loathing of cracked heels. Agree TK Maxx is a good place to buy them. I saw a lady wearing turquoise patent ones last summer in France and would love a pair like that this year. BTW my family hate them and call them 'Mummy's Beaverbrooks'. Weirdos.

Winceywoo Wed 24-Apr-13 18:56:39

Thank goodness I'm not the only one with smelly sandals.

blueraincoat Wed 24-Apr-13 18:57:07

I love mine! Also a plantar fascitis sufferer.

I am a 6 and had to get a 5 as they do come up big. Not granny shoes at all.

ShowMeTheYoni Wed 24-Apr-13 18:58:52

Smelly sandals? Stick them in a back in the freezer for 24 hours. Freezing kills the smelly bacteria...so I have heard! never tried

ShowMeTheYoni Wed 24-Apr-13 18:59:06

Bag...not back

awkwardsis Wed 24-Apr-13 19:01:46

I must be the only person on earth who can't get them to stay on my feet. I was constantly tripping over the pair I had and they took forever to wear in, oh the blisters. I stick to my trusty Reefs now.

JaxTellerIsAllMine Wed 24-Apr-13 19:05:32

If you are a costco member they usually get them in about this time of year. I have a few pairs and they are so comfy. I hated them at first, but they work in summer. The black ones and about 6 pairs of havianas are my staple 'summer' footwear.

And the person who does my pedicures said they are the best to slip on and off and not touch varnish. grin

NothingsLeft Wed 24-Apr-13 19:07:58

Love them! Bought my first pair last year post baby as I was pacing the streets with the buggy. The comfiest show going. Going to get more this year.

yellowhousewithareddoor Wed 24-Apr-13 19:08:03

I can't get them to stay on! I need ankle support . .

cocolepew Wed 24-Apr-13 19:18:11

I love them, have a few pairs of Madrid. I can't wear toe posts.
You can get a wider fit so take care on which ones you buy.

Imsosorryalan Wed 24-Apr-13 21:07:35

How long do your berkies last? I've only got one pair which I love but they only seem to last a summer but then I do wear them constantlygrin

CognitiveOverload Wed 24-Apr-13 21:09:15

Have to say I'm really not a fan.

sallysourire Wed 24-Apr-13 21:16:59

ScienceRocks I agree, no other sandal compares if you are a Birkenstock lover.

I have a pair as slippers I wear all year round and a couple of pairs I live in during the summer.

mejon Wed 24-Apr-13 21:17:37

I can't wear the Madrids but I have several pairs of ones with two or more straps on in various colours and designs. My oldest and comfiest pair somehow went mouldy under my chest of drawers over the winter so I may have to chuck them. Wish they did the patent in other styles though.

Selks Wed 24-Apr-13 21:21:23

What do I think of Birkenstocks? I think thank heavens for them, basically.

I like the mayari style - the toe loop looks great under trousers or jeans and they are extremely comfortable (and unlike some birkenstock styles they stay on well).

DewDr0p Wed 24-Apr-13 21:24:39

I've got some floral ones in the same style as the ones you linked to OP. I love them.

I did size down though as they were massive.

wreckitralph Thu 25-Apr-13 03:42:11

I think B's only look grim if the rest of your outfit looks grim. Otherwise they can be a really nice splash of colour. Saying that though, I just bought a natural brown shade, T bar sandal. Actually my favorite way to wear B's is to buy the covered front/ mule ones and wear them with interesting socks and wear gym in winter with a pair of jeans and a really nice jumper. Keeps your feet toasty warm and really comfy.

wreckitralph Thu 25-Apr-13 03:43:10

Wear them, not gym. Bloody iPhone.

Labootin Thu 25-Apr-13 05:13:07

Birkies with socks.. And interesting ones at that..
Oh my sweet baby Jesus

snoworneahva Thu 25-Apr-13 05:55:56

Great for my foot arch problems but the range has been downgraded to synthetic uppers which give me blisters on my very fragile skin, even the foot beds are often synthetic - I'd really like a new pair but I need leather.

FrancesFarmer Thu 25-Apr-13 09:16:03

I have them in narrow size. They're the best - so comfortable.

JennySense Thu 25-Apr-13 10:04:57

I bout the exact pair in silver this week - i've got horrible wide feet and they at least fit!

MarjorieAntrobus Thu 25-Apr-13 10:20:43

I have a few pairs of Gizehs. I wear them all the time (and I live in a hot country).

They last well if you don't get them soaking wet. If you do get them wet then dry them slowly so that the cork doesn't crack.

They're meant to be a bit long so that your feet have room to move in them. I'm usually a 38 but I buy a 39 in Birkenstocks.

Yep, bargain Birks in TKMaxx. Also on Amazon.

Kaekae Thu 25-Apr-13 10:28:34

I love them, I have a few pairs.

piprabbit Thu 25-Apr-13 10:37:26

I have Madrids in silver and a sort of bronze. I'm wearing my clogs (cream with a sort of brown compass/maps pattern) today.

AnythingNotEverything Thu 25-Apr-13 11:11:53

I love them! I buy a new white pair of Madrids every spring.

YY to breaking them in around the house.

Does anyone know how you can get the suede-y footbed replaced? That's the only reason I have to replace mine!

I have a pair of the Mayari style (bronze colour), which I adore. They are so comfy, and look OK I think. I'm considering getting the same again in a brighter colour.

If the rest of your outfit looks together, Birkies look great!

Maiakins Thu 25-Apr-13 11:34:59

Not a fan anymore ... wore mine to death in 2004-5. Reminds me too much of coin belts, Sienna Millar and boho chic!

BornToFolk Thu 25-Apr-13 11:39:45

I love my Madrids! I have a couple of pairs that are a few years old now and starting to show it so I'll have to get a new pair (or two...) for summer. They are so comfy once they get broken in and they last so well. I wreck cheaper sandals in a month or so!

My feet are size 8 and wide and I wear a size 40. I love that they are made for wide feet.

Birkenstock.co.uk have a sale at the moment. Not as cheap as I've seen in TK Maxx but they have some lovely colours. Gorgeous kids ones too, how cute are these?

woozlebear Thu 25-Apr-13 11:39:53

To people talking about them wearing out and breaking new pairs in...you can send them back to be repaired. Getting them resoled is much nicer than getting a new pair as the inside is still all comfy and moulded to your foot. You can get any bit replaced though, until you gradually end up with a whole new sandal.

kittykarate Thu 25-Apr-13 11:49:45

I live in Birkenstocks over summer as my feet are terrible. I prefer the styles with straps that go over the arch of my foot such as Gizeh, Florida or Pisa. I find Madrid quite hard to walk in. Costco usually do Gizeh and Madrid during spring for a good price.

I think there are definitely Birkenstock shaped feet though - my mam can't wear them as the support bits just don't line up for her.

Eskino Thu 25-Apr-13 11:56:22

Birkenstocks make my feet trump sad

AnythingNotEverything Thu 25-Apr-13 17:42:36

Woozle - that's really interesting. I basically want to keep the strap bit and replace the bit you actually stand on. Even the sole would keep another year or so.

Will check their website. Ta!

I lived in them till I discovered fitflops. Might dig them out though. I fancy a change.

GraduallyGoingInsane Thu 25-Apr-13 18:13:43

Grim! I hate them with a passion! My beloved Mother and I have a deal that if either of us purchase a pair, the other is allowed to hit them repeatedly over the head until they come to their senses.

They look like orthopaedic shoes, they aren't comfy (I tried a pair on just to see what the fuss is about) and when friends come over and kick them off in my house, they smell of wet dog.

and now I shall run away as I have voiced the unpopular opinion

foxysocks Thu 25-Apr-13 18:16:58

I absolutely hate them. i bought a pair in that post-baby fug of fashion wilderness after my first child was born, they ripped my feet to shreds AND looked awful. hideous shoes.

Poodlehorse Thu 25-Apr-13 18:38:48

I love my Gizehs as they stay firmly put on your feet, I don't buy them very often though as I hate the wearing in stage. They need to be falling apart for me to trade them in. I have Mocha clogs on today and they are 8 years old and I could walk forever in them. I know they aren't the prettiest of things but I am at that time when comfort is starting to overtake all things. Madrids I walk out of a bit.

carrie74 Thu 25-Apr-13 18:39:26

I hate the Madrids, but really like the Mayari and the Gizeh. I threw my white Mayari In The washing machine last summer, and they're still going strong.

thoughtsbecomethings Thu 25-Apr-13 19:30:46

Love them wear them all summer long wink

fridgepants Thu 25-Apr-13 21:40:15

I have size 9 feet, and I can't wear anything with a thong between the toes as I have a pronounced gap. I heart mine.

JaxTellerIsAllMine Thu 25-Apr-13 21:46:27

cant wear the gizeh they make my feet 'fart' when I walk. I have a brand new pink pair that I wore about 3 times, sent them to charity shop!

theoriginalandbestrookie Thu 25-Apr-13 21:54:43

Don't like em. Bought a pair last year and find them hard and flappy. Bought a great pair of croc sandals in US they are super comfyso the Birkies are going to the charity shop/bin

Love them. Madrids and gizeh. Bought a new pair of silver madrids in Tk maxx the other day.

My mum hates them on me.

I don't think I've seen the clogs - might have to investigate.

EleanorFarjeon Thu 25-Apr-13 22:10:17

I know they're fugly, but I have about 5 pairs of Gizehs and they are just THE most comfortable things in the world.

I can't wear flip flops like Havaianas for more than 30 minutes as they're too flat and they make my feet ache.

I was on hols over Easter in hot place and walked miles and miles in my Gizehs.

LynetteScavo Thu 25-Apr-13 22:14:33

I can't wear that style, but I love my thong ones. I shall be getting a new pair this year.

Not grim at all.[[ http://www.footshopping.com/gizeh-plum-patent/mid_36630.html?suchbegriff=743551 Very nice in fact]]

LynetteScavo Thu 25-Apr-13 22:14:45

I LOVE my Birkenstocks and never wear anything other than Gizeh ones in the summer. I have a lime green patent pair left over from last summer, a red patent pair which I bought in the sale at the end of last summer so ready for this summer and have just ordered a non-patent brown/gold coloured pair.
I just love them and have worn them every summer for the past 6 years. No other sandal will do!

WishIdbeenatigermum Thu 25-Apr-13 22:19:41

I love them and having gone shock at 2ndcoming's 30 pairs am nowblush reading and remembering how many I've had over the years.
Are they work wearable though? I travel by tube and have a public sectory non sales job. If not any recommendations? I love having my heals free and have nice feet.

MacaYoniAndCheese Thu 25-Apr-13 22:22:57

I adore them. I have the Madrids in black patent, blue and silver. Also have the Gizeh thong in a pearly pink colour but the Madrids are my favourites. They are so comfortable, last forever and I like how they look with shorts, capris etc.

A tip for breaking them in is to smear them with Vaseline, it softens everything but darkens the footbed too.

valiumredhead Fri 26-Apr-13 08:28:14

I have loads of pairs but not in that style OP as they don't stay on my feet.

JulesJules Wed 01-May-13 14:00:21

I absolutely love them and always have a few pairs on the go. Lots of great colours on Amazon, I usually have a white pair and a couple of coloured pairs. Purple patent at the moment! I have wide feet with high arches and plantar fasciitis and they give great support.

I can't get on with Gizeh sandals because of the toe post.

Panzee Wed 01-May-13 14:04:46

They look like they smell. grin

valiumredhead Wed 01-May-13 14:06:57

No they don't at all because the base is cork.

Panzee Wed 01-May-13 14:09:23

I don't actually smell them. grin It's the cork that makes them look manky.

Plathism Wed 01-May-13 14:17:00

Aesthetically I think they're hideous. Definitely a Marmite thing!

freddiefrog Wed 01-May-13 14:43:17

Unlike them for summer in theory, but the moulding in them never fit the shape of my feet so they hurt like buggery

miffybun73 Wed 01-May-13 14:47:10

I have three pairs and live in them from May to September ish. I literally wear them every day in the Spring/Summer that it's not raining. They are so incredibly comfy smile

miffybun73 Wed 01-May-13 14:49:17

Reading this it seems that they are not comfy for everyone. I have fairly narrow feet and a very high instep and they are as comfy as bare feet for me - stay on really well, can walk for miles in them and they don't rub at all ever.

freddiefrog Wed 01-May-13 14:50:18

Unlike = I like

PoppyAmex Wed 01-May-13 16:41:27

I might be the only person who looks at them and sees American pensioner tourists wearing bermuda shorts and socks confused

I wish I liked them because they do look comfy, but I'm Portuguese so I'm programmed to wear flip-flops in the summer.

Helltotheno Wed 01-May-13 20:25:09

Well for those of you who don't have unsightly bunions can I just say a. you're so dang lucky and b. there's not really a host of other options open to someone with that particular problem when it comes to sandals... would love to hear all suggestions but until then, I won't be dumping the birkies!

auntpetunia Wed 01-May-13 22:29:36

Love love my birkies, Am on to my 9th pair in 20 years, my favourite current ones are Kairo which are Gizeh with a back strap, fabulous as I can't wear shoes without a strap.

erowid Wed 01-May-13 23:30:36

I really liked the Gizeh style but my very flat feet doesn't like the arch in birkinstocks. But I found a similar style by Doc Martens which have lasted all summer for the last 5 years smile

They don't smell. Far from it!! In fact they are the only shoe I can wear throughout the summer without socks which don't make my feet smell. I literally can only wear Birkenstocks or Crocs. Everything else reacts with my bare feet resulting in an odour fit for chemical warfare!!
And I refuse to wear Crocs!!!

Love my Birkies smile

erowid Doc Martens are my other shoe-passion. And I love love love love those you have linked to.

Have bought my birkies for this year and there is no money left in the pot for more footwear but may treat myself at the end of the summer sale with my birthday money and save them for next year. They look fab!!!

erowid Thu 02-May-13 13:11:44

behindlock They're brilliant. Like all Docs, once you break them in they're like slippers and last years!
