what do you think of this dress?

(121 Posts)

My sister's wedding in 3 weeks. It's a late afternoon register office then hotel evening do.

Pic on profile, any other suggestions more than welcome.

Alibabaandthe40nappies Sun 17-Mar-13 17:39:15

I can't see your profile?

Just realised that! Hang on...

Ok think I've sorted it

pinkyredrose Sun 17-Mar-13 17:44:00

still can't see profile!

ivykaty44 Sun 17-Mar-13 17:46:10

no can't see anything

It's working for me. It's fine. I do wonder if that shape could perhaps be a bit worky, but if you like it and it feels comfortable then it's absolutely great. What will you wear with it?

Alibabaandthe40nappies Sun 17-Mar-13 17:48:39

I like it. You look as if you've got quite big boobs? In which case that is a good neckline.

Have you got a jacket or something to go with it? Doesn't look like the weather is going to warm up any time soon!!

Thanks, the boobs came with the 3 extra stone grin No idea what to wear with it, I am a style free zone. I thought black heels and a black clutch bag? No jacket that would work.

You'll need something over it or you'll freeze. Personally I'm not terribly fond of bright red with black. Have you already bought the dress?

Nope, I tried it on, didn't buy it. Maybe a darker read for shoes and bag?

pinkyredrose Sun 17-Mar-13 17:55:33

That's a lovely dress, agree that it would look good with something over the top. A wrap or shawl.

I think black heels and bag would look great.

pinkyredrose Sun 17-Mar-13 17:56:54

No I wouldn't do darker red for the shoes and bag, it would just saturate the colour of the dress whereas black would 'set it off' IYSWIM.

But not a black shawl/wrap for a wedding though?

snowmummy Sun 17-Mar-13 17:59:45

Is it the red dress? Its nice and appropriate for the occasion. Do you feel good in it?

TiggerWearsATriteSmile Sun 17-Mar-13 18:01:48

Sorry, I think it's too office like.
If you put black shoes and bag you're definitely bordering on work wear.
I'd go shopping again.

OK, other suggestions please? I NEED tailoring, I have tried floaty and I always look like a sack of spuds sad

Egusta Sun 17-Mar-13 18:06:13

Oh I love it, and think it really suits you, if that is you in the pic. smile

Say, hair up, smokey eyes and a great necklace, bangle combo and you are good to go.

(says me who is wearing hot pink and bright orange today..... but in my defence the orange are my pj bottoms).

Snog Sun 17-Mar-13 18:06:37

I think you look awesome and your username's not bad either
A black jacket or pashmina will work well and also recommend you treat yourself to a blow dry for the wedding
Enjoy!

Egusta Sun 17-Mar-13 18:08:00

Hang on... you have 4 children and can wear a structured dress?

[swoons with envy]

What's your budget? And what colours suit you? Size?

Alibabaandthe40nappies Sun 17-Mar-13 18:17:50

I don't think you need to shop again. Weddings are supposed to be smart, not necessarily massively glamorous - especially at this time of year.

I would go for hair up, and smokey eyes as suggested above - and gold jewellery with perhaps a nude clutch bag and wrap/shawl. That will take it away from any kind of office look.

pinkyredrose Sun 17-Mar-13 18:18:45

How about a blue shawl? That would go well if you get the right shade and maybe a blue fascinator?

Would you like me to come shopping with you missus?

notimefors Sun 17-Mar-13 18:21:50

I think it is a tiny bit too officey too. The shape suits you though. Maybe something in a similar shape but nite one block colour would work better?

notimefors Sun 17-Mar-13 18:22:32

Not, not 'nite'.

Thanks all for the compliments blush Yes it is me in the photo and I will DEFINITELY get a blow dry for the wedding smile

I am 5'7'', size 16, pear/hourglass shape, I think I suit reds, peacock blue, lime green, oranges? If it helps someone said I am an autumn.

TiggerWearsATriteSmile Sun 17-Mar-13 18:31:04

Ooh, yes Remus. That second one is beautiful.

OP, you look great in that shape dress. Make the most of it, the link Remus put up is really nice and more suited to a wedding guest IMHO.

Enjoy it.

TiggerWearsATriteSmile Sun 17-Mar-13 18:33:00

Oops, cross post.
The Hayworth one is what I meant OP.
Good shape but more sister of the bride.

Oooh I do like all of those, thanks Remus, a lot less cash than the one I tried on.

It's gorgeous, isn't it? Expensive though.

Quee, that would be lovely but I'm not sure you (or anyone) have the patience in RL hence the posts smile

Doesn't shiny fabric make you look bigger? Always a bit nervous of it. Love the pink Hobbs one too.

TiggerWearsATriteSmile Sun 17-Mar-13 18:59:41
TiggerWearsATriteSmile Sun 17-Mar-13 19:02:06

Really love This one but you may upstage the bride smile

Looooove the butterfly one. There is a phase eight shop down the road from DCs school, might pop in tomorrow. Thank you smile

I don't think my sister would forgive me for the second dress, although it is lovely.

BuggedByJake Sun 17-Mar-13 19:16:52

It looks good on you but please to wear it with black. Nude or a light beige looks great with red.

TiggerWearsATriteSmile Sun 17-Mar-13 19:17:03

It's the nice fitted shape again Inga. It would show off your assets too ;)

There's more like that on the site I linked. Try on a few if you're close to a store. Sometimes what looks wrong at first glance looks different when its on you.

BuggedByJake Sun 17-Mar-13 19:17:50

* don't wear it with black.

I have been looking for an excuse to buy nude heels Jake mmmm

cocolepew United States Sun 17-Mar-13 19:30:27

You look lovely, I think the butterfly dress will look good on you too.

BuggedByJake Sun 17-Mar-13 19:31:56

Those shoes are perfect smile

So what colour shoes for the butterfly dress?

I am actually excited about dresses smile

Phase Eight so expensive and so polyestery nowadays. Some good shapes but they are often not terribly nice irl because of the fabric. They can be frumpy lengths too, but you are tall so should be okay.

BuggedByJake Sun 17-Mar-13 19:37:49

I can't see the link to the butterfly dress ?

I know lupin but look so is the one I tried on. Loads of viscose and polyester around in every shop I had a look in, including Harvey Nicks shock

Alibabaandthe40nappies Sun 17-Mar-13 19:38:27

Phase Eight has gone downhill so much, it is a real shame. Everything is polyester, and it doesn't wash either. I had to bin a Verity after one outing last summer because it got wet and the stain wouldn't come out, it just spread - and I dry-cleaned it first because that was what the care label said to do.

£100+ for one wear is too much for me!

Hopefully that butterfly one will come up trumps!

My Janice looked like a dish rag after a couple of washes. I refuse to even look in there now tbh.

Oh the thought of spending £100+ on a one wear dress is scary for me. I need to at least believe 10+ wears for that sort of cash.

TSSDNCOP Sun 17-Mar-13 19:41:55

I like the red dress, but I'd put these accessories with it:

wrap

bag

shoes

Loving the wrap and bag but the shoes look a bit flimsy for me, any suggestions for a slightly more solid shoe (and about £100 off the price tag) smile

Verity dresses bnwt on ebay for £75 shock

Viviennemary Sun 17-Mar-13 19:55:42

I'm not very fond of bright red as a colour especially for weddings. But it's a perfectly OK dress.

TSSDNCOP Sun 17-Mar-13 19:56:49
CockBollocks Sun 17-Mar-13 19:57:02

I would agre that the red dress, although lovely, is more of a work look.

Loving the Coast & Phase 8 dresses. Especially the Floret one.

Bambalam Sun 17-Mar-13 20:01:05

Hi OP

I think you could do with a little more definition around your waist so how about this dress - I think the V neck would work for you and twist around the waist can be quite forgiving after a few drinks and a meal...

I think the thing is I don't work in an office, I'm a student midwife so either scruffy jeans for uni, smart casual or uniform for placements.

Loving those shoes smile

happyherdwick Sun 17-Mar-13 20:02:04

You could also try Kaliko-they usually have nice dresses!

happyherdwick Sun 17-Mar-13 20:02:31

You could also try Kaliko-they usually have nice dresses!

happyherdwick Sun 17-Mar-13 20:02:46

oops sorry!

This butterfly dress is only £35 in the Oasis sale.

Ooh that is nice and would also show off my lovely tattoo. Maybe a bit of a high neckline for my shape though?

HappyAsEyeAm Mon 18-Mar-13 13:57:06

I love the Betsy butterfly dress. I think it would be prefect. I have lots of Phase Eight dresses in the same fabric as that and they are really wearable. They're staple dresses in my wardrobe. Good luck shopping!

FWIW I wouldn't wear the Oasis dress so that you can show off your tattoo. Tattoos and weddings don't mix for me. Just my opinion of course.

TiggerWearsATriteSmile Wed 20-Mar-13 20:57:50

Did you go shopping OP?

Ashoething Mon 25-Mar-13 13:16:17

I like all of those phase eight dresses but especially the geranium one-I am a sucker for 50's style though. I dont know how to do links but Lady Vintage do lovely fit and flare dresses for £40-£50. Lovely prints and all the dresses are lined. I have bought 2 recently and love them. Hope you enjoy the wedding!

Ashoething Mon 25-Mar-13 13:17:36

BHS-yes really!-also have some lovely wedding appropriate dresses at the moment.

A shoething, do they need an underskirt/net or are they ok without?

Frogman Mon 25-Mar-13 13:44:35

I think you need to have a look round the shops again. It's okay but looks like something I wear to work.

Frogman Mon 25-Mar-13 13:46:30

Ooo those phase eight dresses are beautiful. I especially like the second and third ones and looks like you have the right figure to make them look great.

I think the phase eight geranium dress is gorgeous and looks like the best one for your shape, really flattering.

Frogman, I believe the polite term is 'curvy' grin

I loved them all but maybe it's because DD2 had a similar-ish dress a couple of summers ago that I'm not sure about the Geranium one IYSWIM.

The sales assistants were great, very helpful and brought me little shrug cardis (which I would probably wear again) and shoes/bags. My question, would I buy shoes/bags from there? They were £99 & £49 shock

Frogman Mon 25-Mar-13 14:30:13

You don't have to spend £99 on shoes- go to a cheaper shop if you haven't got any shoes already that you can wear ( and no one will look at your shoes anyway!). Borrow a handbag from a friend - again it's a small part of the outfit.

I definitely need to buy shoes, I have nothing even vaguely suitable smile

TiggerWearsATriteSmile Mon 25-Mar-13 15:44:10

I really like the second and third ones.

The first one is a bit too toddler party dress for me sorry, I could picture a junior bridesmaid in it IYKWIM. Then again I am a short ass so that is clouding my judgement!

That's what I thought Tigger

And I'm not short

Ashoething Mon 25-Mar-13 16:34:19

msinga-I will wear my lady v dresses with an underskirt but I try and emulate a vintage look so any excuse to wear them! They still look lovely without them as there is a lot of material to the skirt part. The square neckline is very flattering on a bust too-I am a 36E. My dress sits on my knee and I am 5'6.

Ashoething Mon 25-Mar-13 16:35:33

I just got lovely patent nude shoes from Barratts sale for £15 and a bag to match too.

Ashoething Mon 25-Mar-13 16:39:00

msinga-Lady v do Audrey Hepburn style dresses too which I believe are slightly longer-hit just below the knee if that's any better for you? They have a stunning blue one which I am seriously tempted by!. Btw I don't work for Lady vintage-someone on here recommended them and I was blown away by the quality for the price. If you like then on fb then keep an eye open for special offers too-lots of discount codes or money off.

I am loving the Lady V dresses but can't order until Thursday. With the BH weekend I'm thinking there's no way it would be here in time sad I love them though and will definitely buy one for the summer smile

Ashoething Mon 25-Mar-13 19:04:28

I ordered my first dress on the Monday and it came on the Wednesday! The other one I ordered on a Saturday night and it came on the Wednesday too so delivery times are excellent! I really want to order a couple more but think dh will cut up the credit cardgrin

Ashoething Mon 25-Mar-13 19:05:49

I am sure they do an express delivery though so I think if you order first thing thurs you would maybe get it for Tuesday? I would email them and ask-honestly they are really very helpful.

The wedding is on Tuesday, my nerves wouldn't stand it!

petitdonkey Mon 25-Mar-13 20:12:56

I have only skimmed the thread but I think you look lovely in the picture - I am also curvy and LK Tina dresses have been some of my best buys! I would agree, don't wear black - I think that nude would look just lovely and softer for a wedding.

I can see why someone would suggest the geranium dress but I know that, on me, it would just be overwhelming and the shape wouldn't flatter at all. I love the Lady V dresses too but I think I would look like a caricature of a curvy girl if that makes any sense at all.

I always go for simple, elegant boring? but with immaculate hair and make-up.

petitdonkey Mon 25-Mar-13 20:21:22
Coconutty Costa Rica Mon 25-Mar-13 20:26:41

OP you look fab, I would have guessed a 12 not a 16 in the red dress. Some excellent advice here, hope you have a great time.

makingdoo Mon 25-Mar-13 20:42:41

Love the 2nd phase eight dress and think it would look fab on your figure.

You will definetly get accessories cheaper elsewhere

Ok so accessories, shoes and a bag, where should I look?

Thanks coconutty blush

petitdonkey Mon 25-Mar-13 21:47:02

What sort of budget?

£100 for both would be great

petitdonkey Tue 26-Mar-13 08:39:06

too boring?

Which dress did you decide on?

petitdonkey Tue 26-Mar-13 08:40:28

The clutch bag that tssdncop linked to in Coast is hard to beat- looks much more expensive than it is.

I think I might go for the bouquet dress

babySophieRose Tue 26-Mar-13 11:08:37

I'd forgotten about that bag smile

That outfit is lovely but at £310 before accessories is out of my budget.

TiggerWearsATriteSmile Tue 26-Mar-13 11:40:17

The bouquet dress is really lovely, do you like it?

I know time is against you so I won't suggest trying to get a pink suede sandal or anything.
There is greys in the dress too. I think you'd be able to pick up a dark silver or pewter colour shoe easily enough on the high street. You could match the bag and shoes completely or you'd get away with a sparkly clutch too.

That's what I tried on in the shop with the dress, dark grey peeptoes and the same clutch bag. Also both pink and grey shrug cardis. Both lovely smile

I loved all the dresses smile

TiggerWearsATriteSmile Tue 26-Mar-13 12:04:13

Well you can't have ALL of them ok. smile

These shoes are nice too if they are the same colour as the dress.
www.phase-eight.co.uk/fcp/product/phase-eight/Shoes/Alice-Slingback-Platform-Shoes/750339106
(I have about 10 links open looking at shoes and the bouquet dress!)

TiggerWearsATriteSmile Tue 26-Mar-13 12:11:23

These shoes you'd get a lot of wear out of I think. http://www.phase-eight.co.uk/fcp/product/phase-eight/Shoes/Tia-Filigree-Sandals/750347787

Not with the bouquet dress though. Maybe the Ellie one?
I'm picking phase eight because its close to you by the way. It'd be nice to walk in and try everything on together.
I want to come shopping now!!

TiggerWearsATriteSmile Tue 26-Mar-13 12:15:05
TiggerWearsATriteSmile Tue 26-Mar-13 12:36:16

I spotted them too! They are nice.

Oh, I see they actually have them on with the dress in that link, duh me!

Which was the most comfortable all on together?
Was there any one that had the edge for you?

I liked them all but I'm leaning towards the bouquet, the ellie dress was lovely but where the crossover is at the top, my bra showed at the sides and all my bras are the same shape.

TiggerWearsATriteSmile Tue 26-Mar-13 13:48:04

Well then, there's your answer Inga!!

Something tells me you are still a bit apprehensive though.

petitdonkey Tue 26-Mar-13 15:53:12

The bouquet dress is beautiful and would be my choice from the selection (not that I think that matters!!!) - good choice!!

A grey or silver shoe will work perfectly and can be used again - ditto pashmina or shrug.

any of these bags would work

I just don't really 'do' dressing up. I'm going out on Thursday to buy it all. So Phase Eight for dress, Coast for bag and a trawl for shoes smile

TiggerWearsATriteSmile Tue 26-Mar-13 21:57:39

Accessorize have nice clutches too and they're not too expensive.

Happy shopping and enjoy the wedding. You will be lovely.

Off shopping today armed with DHs wages (not all of them obvs) wish me kuck smile

Luck hmm

OK so bouquet dress, green shrug, nude shoes and matching ish bag. Very happy, in and out in an hour like a ninja, thank you all smile

woopsidaisy Fri 29-Mar-13 09:18:36

Just fiund this thread which has passed a bfing session!
I have a very similar dress to the one in OP. I love it and it looks fab, and I get so many compliments when wearing it.
But when I sit down it really rides up. I have good legs but it is not comfortable nice or flattering!
I love the outfit you have chosen. And the accessories sound gorgeous. You will look amazing, have a great time at the wedding!

TiggerWearsATriteSmile Fri 29-Mar-13 09:24:01

Fab Inga!
You'll have to post a photo on the day after all that.
Enjoy smile

Turquoiseblue Fri 29-Mar-13 09:25:59

i think it s a nice dress, I would go for a colour bag and shoes - a purple or blue maybe ? (need to see them together though)
You could do a cream/ ivory blazer type jacket paired with nude/ gold heels bag belt too (they would be easily reused ...) I have a lovely jacquard type ivory blazer from Zara that I ve worn lots with dresses and also casually with jeans etc. THe material leand to it being a bit more structured and easier to dress up.

Turquoiseblue Fri 29-Mar-13 09:30:05

oops sorry see you re sorted - enjoy the day !

OK total outfit:

dress

shrug

shoes

bag
