North Face Arctic Parka - will I regret buying?

Should not be spending any money at moment, as I am unemployed.

But having shivered all winter, decided that I really need a warm and practical coat for walking dog and watching ds play sport.

It was reduced hugely in the sale, and I know I probably won't wear it until next winter now - but I hope it could last 10 years... and it even comes with a 2 year guarantee.

Please tell me I haven't made an expensive mistake?

JoannaGlumley Wed 06-Mar-13 20:57:38

I have one and I find it really toasty and warm. It is a bit bulky and takes up masses of room in the wardrobe but definitely worth it, good buy!!!

bonzo77 Wed 06-Mar-13 21:07:05

It's fab. Warm and waterproof. And machine washable. It's a bit of an odd shape, sort of too bulky in the chest (above the boobs), but it doesn't put me off. Wish I'd got it in the first place instead of cheaper ones the two previous years.

Incapinka Wed 06-Mar-13 21:09:15

I want one! Where did you find it in the sale?! No you won't regret it grin

Love love love mine. I commute by train to London and walk everywhere.

Never been cold, not once in my artic parka! It's really efficient when you zip it up and put the hood on. It should last years.
I paid £200 for mine 2 years ago so that should help you with the bargain or not issue.

thenightsky Wed 06-Mar-13 21:21:11

I thought they were down-filled and not washable bonzo?

Speedos Wed 06-Mar-13 21:40:19

I think I have worn mine everyday since buying it last autumn, never been cold!

NuclearStandoff Wed 06-Mar-13 22:08:45

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

Bought it in the North Face shop - reduced from £320 to £190. Went in just to try it on and was going to then buy online, but when I saw it was on sale was same price as online so bought it there and then.

snoworneahva Wed 06-Mar-13 22:27:52

They are down filled and they are washable - drying is a slight challenge - needs a few tennis balls in a tumble dryer or a bit of bashing works too. In general because the exterior is waterproof I just wipe mine clean. Btw I love it so much that dh bought a men's and I got similar ones for the kids so we are all toasty.

MrsMills Thu 07-Mar-13 06:58:25

I love mine! Worn it every (v long) winter for the past 3 years. Has passed every test here so far and living in Sweden certainly tests it rigorously. This might make me look dim, but I've only just noticed that you can unzip from the bottom, making it easier to sit down!

This is not a purchase you will regret, promise! And you can wash in the machine too.

rubytutu Thu 07-Mar-13 16:51:41

I paid £165 at a north face outlet, was the previous seaons colour dark green. I have not regretted it at all and is the first winter ever that I have never once been cold. bulky and mumsy but very very cosy.

MrsKoala Thu 07-Mar-13 17:28:13

ooooh i have been coveting one for ages. I think i may treat myself - i can see them online for £189. The thing is, i really want the vintage white. Please talk me out of it and tell me the fig/brown/blue is better!

Also, does anyone know, is a large a 14?

motherofallmuddles Thu 07-Mar-13 17:33:21

does anyone have link ?I have coverted this for ages but can only see them at full price on the north face site

motherofallmuddles Thu 07-Mar-13 17:34:03

coveted even!

MrsKoala Thu 07-Mar-13 17:34:23
Ginebra Thu 07-Mar-13 17:34:59

I bought one four years ago and it has made me hate winter less. buy it i say.

MrsKoala Thu 07-Mar-13 17:35:31

Erm no it's not, that's a car i'm looking at on auto trader blush

try here

motherofallmuddles Thu 07-Mar-13 17:37:07

nice car - good colour , matches the dark navy blue parka very well!

I am a 12 and wear a medium. If you don't have a huge bust, you may want a M.
Depends what you wear under it I suppose.

Ginebra Thu 07-Mar-13 19:10:10

yeh lol at the car link. i thought my eyes were deceiving me.

i am size 10/12 but with no boobs. wear a small. there was no size 10, 12 etc. it was just small medium large i think

Ginebra Thu 07-Mar-13 19:10:54

buy the car too wink

MrsKoala Thu 07-Mar-13 20:53:16

Just to keep you updated, as i know you are all desperate to know, i have bought the i think i will buy the coat in chocolate - but i so want the white, although rationally i know it's totally impractical. sad

MrsKoala Thu 07-Mar-13 20:55:23

i don't have a huge bust, but i am broad shouldered and planning on being pregnant on and off for the next 4 years, so i think a large is best. Thanks.

Speedos Thu 07-Mar-13 21:52:03

Do they have the grey on sale, I have the grey and it's fab colour!

Speedos Thu 07-Mar-13 21:53:29

Mrs Koala, it is quite fitted around waist, not sure it would stretch to pregnant tummy....

MrsKoala Thu 07-Mar-13 21:55:17

oh no, i doubt it and i do get huge very quickly. i was thinking more of bfing and the after period.

You can just popper up around bump grin

thenightsky Thu 07-Mar-13 22:12:45

Why does the car ad say its a rover when its clearly an Astra? confused I do hope it is an Astra... I had a Rover and it was the shitest of shit cars I've ever had the misfortune to own.

So is the Medium parka a 12 would you say? I can only see small left now sad

lucidlady Thu 07-Mar-13 22:32:57

Love love love mine. Best coat purchase ever!

MrsKoala Thu 07-Mar-13 22:44:00

It is an Astra smile The guy sold a Rover and then piggy backed a new ad onto the original one! Our car which just died is a Rover 25, but wasn't too bad - it was very old when it died.

Right, that's it i'm ordering the brown in Large. smile

LarkinSky Thu 07-Mar-13 22:44:06

Ditto I love my black arctic parka, best clothing buy ever and worth every penny. Has withstood monsoon style rain, seriously low dog walking temps and even alpine skiing. Great pockets, fitted so flattering and it's not very heavy either. I'm a 12 and the medium fits me great with room to spare.

MrsMargoLeadbetter Thu 07-Mar-13 22:50:21

Sorry to hijack, but my husband who is 6ft 3 and is v thin is looking for a long parka like the one in this thread but a male version.

Checked the link and the men's coats on that site aren't really long enough.

Anyone know what brands to look for?

Thanks and sorry again for hijacking.

MrsMills Fri 08-Mar-13 07:15:43

MrsMargoLeadbetter - have you looked at Canada Goose? Bit more £££££ but will last a million years and is SUPER warm.

Warning though - the fur trim is real fur (coyote) if that's a problem for you you can find non furry coats.

MrsMills Fri 08-Mar-13 07:18:23

Should add DH is similar build to yours and wear the expedition parka in deep winter.

MrsMargoLeadbetter Fri 08-Mar-13 08:29:08

Oooh thanks MrsMills will look into those. Did your DH get once in the UK or are you in Canada?

Maraki Fri 08-Mar-13 08:41:43

Does the North Face arctic parka shed feathers after a few washes?

I have a down filled coat which after a few washes, is shedding feathers which really do show on any thing dark that I am wearing.

MrsMills Fri 08-Mar-13 08:47:33

We are in Sweden, bought it here when he realised his regular winter coat was next to useless here. I would advise he tries them on for size/arm length and weight, not for the weak iykwim!

snoworneahva Fri 08-Mar-13 13:38:12

Have only washed my coat once in 2 winters - no noticeable down loss.

rubytutu Fri 08-Mar-13 14:32:20

have not actually washed mine yet despite wearing it every school day since Octobergrin must buy some tennis balls.

LarkinSky Fri 08-Mar-13 20:07:10

Haven't washed my coat in two years - I wipe it with baby wipes. I thought it might never need washing - is that grim?

AlisonMoyet Sun 10-Mar-13 17:00:43

I need sizing advice on north face attic. Am busty size 12. Large ?

Gingefringe Sun 10-Mar-13 19:01:34

I've just looked at the North Face website and they're not reduced. Do you have a different link anyone? that doesn't involve cars.

I'm 12 and busty 32FF and wear M totally big enough

WannaSplitAPineapple Sun 10-Mar-13 19:49:47

I love mine, it's like wearing a quilt outside! I've been stranded at the train station for an hour today just wearing a thin dress underneath. Everyone else was complaining they were freezing but I was lovely and toasty. I was a bit shock about paying so much for a coat but its the best purchase I've made.

AlisonMoyet Sun 10-Mar-13 19:58:41

Thanks shattered. After almost weeping with cold today in an old lands end one I've put my foot down. H just ordered. Dunno what site.

NB be doesn't normally buy my clothes!!

AlisonMoyet Sun 10-Mar-13 19:59:11

Oh and you wanna.

I hope the skirts not too flarey

GoldenHares Sun 10-Mar-13 20:00:22

One of the best things I've ever bought. The first winter I've not been cold.

Alisonmoyet that's why I bought mine. It was three winters ago, we had so much snow. Even in London. I was pregnant, with terrible SPD and could only walk at a snail pace. My winter coat was a wool double breasted affair. I was frozen to the bone for about 5 months. I couldn't walk fast enough to heat up.

I vowed to myself I would never again wear a wool coat or be cold on my commute ever again. Trouble is, sometimes when I get on the train, after my march, I am sweltering.

AlisonMoyet Sun 10-Mar-13 20:23:35

Flaredy skirt bit?

nogoodusernamesleft Sun 10-Mar-13 20:29:40

Just to say that the Surfdome website had reduced North Face ( and others) jackets in their sale when I looked this morning. Hope this helps someone!

noddyholder Sun 10-Mar-13 20:31:02

They are quite roomy. I tried a few as I bought ds one for xmas and was in teh shop and M is fine

I don't think the bottom is flared Alison. Is that what you mean? Mine is pretty straight up and down

AlisonMoyet Sun 10-Mar-13 21:47:23

Thanks mate. That's how I want it.

motherofallmuddles Mon 11-Mar-13 12:08:09

Oh no I spent all weekend thinking about this and now have decided go go go only to find that there are none left in the sale
If anyone has seen Im looking for Large and whilst I'd love the vintage cream I think it might be hopelessly impractical

newpup Mon 11-Mar-13 13:13:48

I LOVE mine, I have the chocolate brown one and it is soooo toasty. I bought it last Summer in the sale and it was reduced from £320 to £190. DH bought it for me. I am a large size 12 with boobies! I have a large, the lady in the shop said that is 12-14 and they are on the small side. I tried on the medium as I would normally wear medium and it was snug. Large fits perfectly with room to wear a jumper underneath, not that you will need it!

HeyLuciani Mon 11-Mar-13 13:21:34

motherofallmuddles - I've seen a few white ones (is that the same or is there also a cream one? confused )

Outback Trading has a white one in a size L at £169.

BrendaBlethyn Mon 11-Mar-13 13:31:29

Mine is posted!

motherofallmuddles Mon 11-Mar-13 13:32:35

I love the white one but thinks it would mark v easily but I think all the black coats might have gone. I've looked at various sites but no luck sad
(first world problem obvs)

HeyLuciani Mon 11-Mar-13 14:10:07

They seem to have all sizes in black at Cotswold Outdoor.......unfortunately not as much discount as some other places - £220.

I ordered from Cotswold yesterday - could probably have got it cheaper if I'd looked a bit harder, but I wanted to order 2 sizes to try and couldn't be faffed ordering them from different shops blush and I got some cashback (Topcashback), so it's not too bad.

motherofallmuddles Mon 11-Mar-13 14:14:12

Right, I think I will just order from Cotswold - spent most of my lunch hour doing this and I can't find what I want ! Thank you so much

HeyLuciani Mon 11-Mar-13 14:26:49

No worries. I've been thinking about getting one for two years but the (full) price always put me off - decided yesterday to stop procrastinating and just bloody get one! Freezing today, so looking forward to it. smile

motherofallmuddles Thu 14-Mar-13 09:55:23

Very toasty on my walk to work today, parka arrived v quickly. In the end I went for large in black
found it from a shop on ebay if anyone is still looking

Willow36 Thu 14-Mar-13 14:23:50

I completely love mine. Best purchase ever. grin

NinaNannar Thu 14-Mar-13 14:57:40

it came! Medium in black
its a close fit but large will be huge

it isint very thick though

Inertia Thu 14-Mar-13 20:24:28

I bought one a few weeks ago and have worn it loads already. I'd done lots of research and couldn't find anything that was as warm, long and completely waterproof, so I've been coveting one for a while.

Definitely worthwhile getting.

MrsKoala Thu 14-Mar-13 20:29:55

mine is at the depot <wail> i was out when it arrived, hurrumph.

wont be able to pick it up till monday sad

Looks lovely, very similar to MN fav Merrel Haven/Wakefield/Insukated which us the most waterproof coat I have ever know and one of the only goats with lovely long sleeves do no cold/wet gap between coat and gloves grin

I'm not sure if goats are waterproof but the coat certainly is smile

Meglet Thu 14-Mar-13 21:26:51

I might have to invest in one. I made the mistake of buying a Zara down coat and it's awful, not waterproof and the pockets are so tiny that I can't pop my keys / phone in there without them almost slipping out. After 2 winters I've had enough and need to e-bay it and get something better.

NinaNannar Thu 14-Mar-13 21:32:06

Reassure me wrt thickness

rubytutu Fri 15-Mar-13 11:46:50

nina mine is very thick but wonder if yours has been packed flat for a while if that would make it like that?

rubytutu Fri 15-Mar-13 11:49:56

meglet get one. not one person on here has regretted it although I often mutter about selling it when am sweating. today for example outdoor temp is 7 and I know I would be too hot in it. buy it with a view to getting several winters use out of it.

MrsKoala Sat 16-Mar-13 17:23:00

i've got it! oh my, it is gorgeous!! chocolate brown, warm, so well made, lovely details. DH has even been tarting around in it smile

I got the large and it's a little roomy but with a chunky jumper and for skiing it's perfect size.

So glad i bought it. The only thing is DH's entire wardrobe is NorthFace so we are now going to look like his'n'her losers.

S'alright MrsKoala, me and DH are matching North Face as well! Just got to do the kids now grin

NinaNannar Tue 26-Mar-13 08:50:56

I got the M. It's snug. But not to allow air in.
I love it. Great style. Slim cut.
I'm really pleased as h wondered if there was any point buying it in march. Hem hem

Hulababy Tue 26-Mar-13 08:59:41

Dh and myself both ordered north face coats yesterday before we go away next week, seeing as its freezing but were are going to cent parcs and needed shorter coats to cycle in.

We went for the Naptse coats. Dh went for black. I've gone for brown. We will be a bit matching, lol! But the prices we really good and the man dh spoke to in Blacks really recommended them and Especially north face.

I ordered from surfdome yesterday as their sale prices were good. Free next day delivery too so should arrive later today.

Hulababy Tue 26-Mar-13 09:01:41

Nuptse not napste!

Size large is a 14, yes

NinaNannar Thu 28-Mar-13 06:17:28

My Has the napste. Ill warn you it's HUGE. REALLY BULKY

NinaNannar Thu 28-Mar-13 06:22:33

Ah. Of you mean the down Michelin one ?
My mistake. He has this one. Looks brilliant in it

Hulababy Thu 28-Mar-13 07:40:29

The insulated one yes?
Arrived and really light and not bulky either. Very very warm!

We needed shorter coats so can cycle in them.

noddyholder Thu 28-Mar-13 08:34:06

My ds has the nuptse but got small as he is skinny I sometimes put it on to nip to shops ad I love it so warm he says it's regulation film director coat for on set! Think he is getting ahead of himself grin

HogFucker Tue 12-Nov-13 17:21:46

I think I may have killed my coat this week - it was like wearing a duvet and I'm cold now. I know this is a Zombie thread, but has anyone seen this in the sale anywhere recently?

snowpuma Wed 13-Nov-13 18:53:35

Try the M&s down filled coats for a cheaper alternative... Less than £100!

MillyRules Wed 13-Nov-13 19:34:21

Think this is your coat

I got this other one and its amazing. I got it half price at £55.00 and its down and feathers . I bought it as I was fed up of being so cold for the last couple of winters and never venturing out. This keeps me sooo warm and toasty, just like wearing a duvet.

MillyRules Wed 13-Nov-13 19:37:01

ha ha.....didn't realise it was a zombie

Milkhell Wed 13-Nov-13 19:37:10

Now I have a really FANTASTIC tip...I bought a XL boy's for a very reduced. I can't remember how much by but it was a significant amount as we couldn't afford the full price one. I'm looking forward to wearing it this winter.

Milkhell Wed 13-Nov-13 19:38:05

* very reduced price

Mumbrage Wed 13-Nov-13 19:41:21

/zombie thread or not, I've just read through it. I like reading about winter coats. They are less in and quickly out (fashion wise) than other clothes.

MillyRules Wed 13-Nov-13 19:42:51

Mumbrage I am wearing mine for its first winter and its just amazing. A real life saver. Instead of shivering im actually having to leave it undone as it gets really warm inside....will be great when the snow comes. Yayyyy

millie19 Wed 13-Nov-13 23:35:55

I've just been persuaded to order a NF Arctic parka after reading this, and several other wise threads. Got mine from Outdoor Kit - £260 down from £320! Am 5ft8 with long arms (that info relates to another thread btw!) so hoping it will cover/reach all the right bits to keep me toasty & warm.
