I want a blush evening gown/wedding dress - you lot are my only hope!

(64 Posts)

Hi all. Mostly lurk on these boards and post occasionally. Really need help finding a dress to wear for my wedding in a few months' time.

I've decided I'd love to wear a blush/nude/palest pink dress and I want it to be long and vaguely bohemian, if that doesn't sound too wanky. The problem is size (sort of) and budget. I am very teeny and petite and am finding that many Gown (capital G) type dresses come up quite large in sizes. The length doesn't bother me, I'll just wear giant heels, but the size is trickier. I ordered this dressBand of Outsiders in a size 1 and although it's stunning, the fit wasn't quite right.

Have ANY of you seen a similiar type dress anywhere? Or can you recommend sites that do small sizes? (I'm a 6-8 UK size.) My budget would be about 450 pounds, 500 absolute max, but ideally much much MUCH cheaper. I don't want a meringue, and I don't want to have to pay fuckloads in import tax from the US.

I bought a dress from French Connection for my wedding, it cost £150. I can't link as I'm on my phone but if you type 'French Connection Shelby dress' into google images it comes up.

It looks quite like the one you linked and is a beautiful blush colour with a sweatheart neckline and small pleats.

I'm not sure if FC still sell them but you cn get them on ebay or if you want a size 8 I'll sell mine as I didn't wear it in the end (though I did get married!), still has the tags on.

If you really like the dress you linked to could you not buy it and get a seamstress to take it in for you? It shouldn't cost more than £50.

Good luck in your search!

This is pretty stunning and comes in a 6 and 8

this by Ted Baker

and another stunning one

Thank you so much sweetheart, some great options there, will look in detail when I get a chance
Please keep them coming, I think realistically I'll need a size 6

Thanks again x

Ted baker options look great, folks thank you all, will update properly later

Ian Stuart does a lot of blush/palest pink dresses (mine was that colour, lush!), though most are a bit meringuey, and definitely £££, but you may find an ex-sample one or pre-loved within budget, and be able to minimise any meringueness. Just an idea, in case you hadn't considered this.

You are geniuses, S&B folk, thank you all soooo much.

Ok, here goes

All of those dresses are gorgeous. The Temperley fab but too dear and would prob need the size 6. The Halston colour is perfect and love it from the waist down but the neckline...my boobs are tiny and I think I'd get that weird pancake boob look.

That FC is lovely and thank your for the offer to sell! I will totally keep it in mind. The Band of Outsiders dress I linked to, while truly fab, just doesn't quite work with my size, the froofing layered skirt around the empire line doesn't flatter. So I think it's not worth getting it taken in. You need to be real tall and really skinny to pull it off, I think.

great choices. The Forever Unique is pretty but ultimately too barbie-ish with the pink and the sequins, I think. The two Ted Bakers are gorgeous - I am seriously considering the second one...flowers

The first one...noooo not close! The second one, yes, but like you said wrong size. Thank you though!

That last one, the Jovani, is beautiful but too dear. I'm not too keen on sequins+pink also, but it's a gorgeous dress.

Ooh you wore blush also, would love to see a sneaky link or pic of your dress! Ultimately I think those dresses are all too bridal for me - lovely, but my ceremony will be really teeny so I want to keep the vibe quite relaxed.

Thank you all again! And if there are any more keep them coming - ideas outside the brief always welcome, and it def doesn't need to be strapless

EldritchCleavage Wed 13-Feb-13 15:19:28

I wore blush, but I had mine made. Is that a possibility? Cheaper than shop bought and the fit will be better.

OrchidFlakes Wed 13-Feb-13 15:22:54

I know what you're saying Eldritch but I'm both lazy and busy (between work and manic toddler) and I just need the minimum fuss and instant gratification of ordering online and not having to do any further work/research/fittings...perhaps I'm being naive about this...hmm

Orchid, that first Mango is totally lovely! It's not the dress for me, but it is lovely. The second one doesn't grab me. Thank you smile

OrchidFlakes Wed 13-Feb-13 15:30:14

From the US but you could chat with them re postage/taxes, there may be a way around it:

LentilAsAnything Wed 13-Feb-13 15:33:31

I will PM you!

MarianForrester Wed 13-Feb-13 15:38:01

Different league price wise, but could be pretty?

EldritchCleavage Wed 13-Feb-13 15:40:23

Fair enough. I had no choice as I was pregnant (slattern that I am-had no idea how strongly some people feel about pregnant brides!) with boobs bigger than my head, so made to order was the most realistic option. I've told DH we have to renew our vows just so I can have the wedding dress I really wanted. He's not going for it so far...

sweetheart Wed 13-Feb-13 15:54:06

this is quite unusual

Have a look at these dresses they come in any colour and can be tied however you want to make various different style dresses.

Jimjamatron Wed 13-Feb-13 16:26:03

Ghost do a range of dye to order dressed at John lewis and have a pale dusky pink in the dye range:

paler pink

Beautiful Matthew Williamson

NanetteCarter Wed 13-Feb-13 16:47:52

The Matthew Williamson and Ted Baker ones are stunning...really beautiful.

If you need any more inspiration though, have you looked at this site?

Seen it recommended on here several times and I'm waiting for a reason to order!

MarianForrester Wed 13-Feb-13 16:55:48

Oh, that Courtesan boutique site is amazing!

I need an occasion....

I was just going to link to the Ghost ones sold at JL. I have two (Chelsea in Nude and the Novella in Boudoir Pink). They are very long. I am a size 10/12 and bought a M. Strangely, my sister is a 8/10 and also has the Chelsea in a M but had to have the shoulders taken in a bit. I think the S might be Ok for you. I would expect to have to make some small alterations on most evening gowns.

Angelmist Wed 13-Feb-13 17:48:53

What about flesh, a very light apricot.

It depends on your skin tone and hair colour. If you are very blonde with light skin tone a pinky toned light colour would look good.

Lucky are those dark skinned gals who can wear almost anthing and look ravishing.

The ghost one

Is really lovely.

Especially on a size 8 frame. Unfortunately I'm an 18 and could only dream...!

Have you looked at TK Maxx? I noticed today that they have wedding dresses at greatly reduced prices. There might be something there that tickled your fancy for less than you might otherwise pay.

Argh just wrote a post and it disappeared.

So, where are we:

-the ghost dresses are lovely but I don't fancy long sleeves.

-the Matthew Williamson is loads of fun but perhaps a little too much.

-tethersend's velvet offering is tempting me, it's vv pretty, but I don't want to order from US - couldn't take another import tax disaster

-The Notte dress in sweetheart's link is also vaguely tempting me, but it's sold out, bastards!

- I keep going back to this Ted Baker Ted Baker but something's holding me back - would the tie waist+that colour look dumpy from a distance - I am vertically challenged!

- I also found this Theory dress Theory which again is lovely but see concerns re. Ted Baker above

So the search continues, thanks again to everyone for their input! flowers

SorrelForbes Thu 14-Feb-13 10:03:58

Not all the Ghost dresses have long sleeves.

Look at the Chelsea and the Novella

any of these take your fancy? A friend of mine has ordered from this website twice for wedding outfits and the dresses that have arrived have been lovely.

another halterneck one way over budget damn

will reply to y'all properly asap but in the meantime...thoughts on this JCrew? It seems to have all sizes under the earth AND does a petite option... and they seem to have the international shipping stuff sorted out.

Am actually having a little wobble about the colour - the 'dusty shale' mint is also extreeeeeemly pretty.

cathyandclaire Thu 14-Feb-13 11:46:47

That's gorgeous...you'll look like a Greek Goddess smile
Like the champagne too

JumpHerWho Thu 14-Feb-13 12:18:22

That is a beautiful dress! With 'undone' hair (flowers) you'll look fabulous. I like the pale pink better but the green is also lovely. Pink seems more 'bride' than green somehow.

LoveGigi Thu 14-Feb-13 12:49:02

Google DVF Zarita dress in nude, some pics look taupe but it is a blush colour, it's totally not what you originally wanted but will look amazing on a petite frame. The small sizes are in stock and a batch are being made at the mo, I've been assured. I'm looking at this for my registry office ceremony in late August.

Claxonia Thu 14-Feb-13 13:35:05

J Crew one is beautiful, I agree that pink is more bridal but green night be good if you want to avoid that.

Try the eliott claire website there tons in pale pink!!!!

Amazing link cremeeggsrock, I've never heard of Eliott Claire. Those are beautiful dresses! This is really lovely cowl and I see you can pick from lots of colours. Argh! That's thrown a spanner in the works now, I'd almost had my finger on the JCrew button!

God it's a minefield, isn't it. There are some truly gorgeous frocks out there. Hard to know, hard to know. Hope that some bridal lurkers have gotten some inspiration from this thread at least
<hands out brew to all link providers, you are all great>

NanetteCarter Thu 14-Feb-13 15:49:26

I saw this one earlier and thought of this thread!

and more

Apologies if these have already been linked...

Please let us know what you go for in the end....with pics?! wink

cremeeggsrock Thu 14-Feb-13 16:50:46

sorry for the confusion grin hope it helps!

I've ordered the JCrew Arabelle in Misty Rose. In the end I felt that its simplicity would work best on my short frame. Hoping to go with the 'undone hair' look JumpHerWho mentions! <wills hair to grow faster>

It looks like a lovely dress - the champagne, misty rose, graphite and dusty shale shades in particular had me drooling. Really really hope it works out. I will update either way!

thank you again to all flowers. So many lovely dresses were shared on this thread!

cremeeggsrock Fri 15-Feb-13 14:58:22

really pleased your sortedsmile keep us posted grin

JumpHerWho Fri 15-Feb-13 20:43:58

Yay! Do we get a sneaky pic of you in it when it arrives please?

I had a classic meringue, wish I'd been more adventurous.

Ok folks.

The J Crew dress has arrived and I have tried it on. First, though, I need to tell you that I also panic-ordered that beautiful Halston dress that many of you linked to, and by coincidence, both arrived today. I wanted to have them both to try on and compare and contrast in the hope that one would be the clear winner.

The Halston arrived first. It is a beauteous dress. Lovely heavy silk, the material falls gracefully - all in all, the draping's very Ancient Greek and just fab. The neckline is way deeper than I'd be comfortable with but I ordered a lace bralette thing to go underneath it and that actually looked really pretty. The tie waist is somewhat problematic: the sash is very long and it's kind of a case of 'what-do-I-do-with-this'? And something about the way the dress hangs once tied made me feel that the face-on view is not as flattering as it could be. (The side view is fabulous.) But I felt that I could make it work with a little tweaking.

Then the J Crew. It's much lighter than the Halston, really feathery chiffon. And? I LOVE IT. I'd been worried that it would be too pink in RL, but it's not: it's exactly the same shade as the Halston and just what I wanted. Even though it's a Petite dress, it's still long enough to feel event-length. I had been thinking of wearing it bra-less but there is a tiny bit too much room in the bodice for this. Tried it on with a strapless bra and it's perfect - comfortable and doesn't leave me feeling like I have to keep hoicking it up to hide the bra or anything. So all I need to do now is get a really good strapless bra.

So that's it, decision made. Thanks again to everyone flowers

cremeeggsrock Thu 21-Feb-13 14:16:48

JumpHerWho Thu 21-Feb-13 15:26:24

Thanks for update, that dress is so so beautiful - there will be a collective 'ooh' when you walk in! What are you planning for hair and shoes etc? How about something like this ?

I actually had something already that's not a million miles from that, JumpHer, I uploaded a pic to my profile, see if you can see it. Excuse the wanky pose and the dreadful mess but I needed to take a pic to see what the dress looked like properly iykwim. hair will probably be up.
Shoes suggestions welcome!

argh and excuse my terrible hair, it will not look as messy on the day!

(am taking pic down in a few minutes!)

LentilAsAnything Thu 21-Feb-13 19:10:37
