Shaved on one side hairstyle

(56 Posts)

Ok I'm thinking that maybe I want to do this before I get too old and mutton for trendy hairstyles like this.

I have long shoulder length layered blonde hair, which side do you decide to do it on for a start and has anyone had this done and regretted it ?

I had an undercut back in the day so I kind of know what I'm letting myself in for in terms of growing it out and maintenance.

Does anyone have any advice for success of words of warning !!!

Oh God, just don't. Its horrible

If you like it, then go for it. I think it's a particularly ugly hairstyle, TBH, but I'm probably just old!

Porkster Mon 11-Feb-13 20:36:48

I like Ellie Goulding's shaved bit, looks fab on her.

PaleHousewifeOfCumbriaCounty Mon 11-Feb-13 20:38:05

My sister did it, looked like she'd had surgery and theyd shaved a patch.

buttercrumble Mon 11-Feb-13 20:38:17

Its horrible , sorry

Oh no palehousewife ! Did she like it or she agree ?

I'm thinking maybe my lifestyle isn't rock and roll enough to carry it off

TacoLeBell Mon 11-Feb-13 21:20:09

I really like it. My style is pretty grungy rock chick so I think a bit different to the other posters on here but I've considered it myself before, the only reason I didn't is that my friend did it and we'd look a bit weird with the same 'statement' hair! If you're worries then go for an Ellie Goulding type 'patch'? link

Hopefully Mon 11-Feb-13 21:37:09

If you want a slightly less obvious option, I have (ahem) an undercut at the back. It's actually because my hair is really thick and it stops my short bob having a wedge at the back, but sometimes I slick it in place so the undercut is showing.

Ooh that's cute I like that Taco, I like her natural hair colour too

I am a bit grungy but flip over into floral dresses I think it will give my look that edge

Plus I'm working for myself so don't have to look smart

GeekLove Mon 11-Feb-13 21:47:26

I have an Ellie goulding type patch. I did have a more severe undercut which formed a v at the back and went to above my ears at the front. Its mostly grown out but the patch I put in when I got frustrated by the hair which would never grow long enough to tie back. If you leave it shaggy rather than razor bald say it won't show unless you want to show it off.

BerryLellow Mon 11-Feb-13 22:05:14

it's a Skrillex cut. and you're a braver woman than I grin

PaleHousewifeOfCumbriaCounty Mon 11-Feb-13 22:05:38

Oh my sister loved it for about four weeks... Now its looks weird as it grows out

VerySmallSqueak Mon 11-Feb-13 22:10:51

I think it really does depend on whether you mix with people who would 'get it' ,or whether you would feel you need to conceal it all the time because otherwise you'd spend all your time explaining yourself to them/them looking at you like you've lost it.
[speak from bitter experience....]

mamalovesmojitos Mon 11-Feb-13 22:30:12

Love it but agree with VerySmallSqueak

beachyhead Mon 11-Feb-13 22:34:32

My 15 yo dd wants this grin

revolvenotevolve Mon 11-Feb-13 23:35:58

i quite like it - but as I dye my hair it would be too different and give away my natural hair colour. Plus my head shape is odd.

ToysRLuv Mon 11-Feb-13 23:37:29

I have this hairstyle (albeit shorter) and love it. Wish I'd done it sooner. Although will have to change the blonde now that Kerry bloody Katona has the exact same style angry I am trying to grow the long side longer - adore Alice Dellal!

It's not for everyone, but I have always been quite adventurous with my hair (not full on punk, but not precious about hair either). Even shaved my whole head once. It was fab. I would do it now, but I don't have the figure for it (It can make you look quite butch if you have any extra flab). I hate dull hair.

ToysRLuv Mon 11-Feb-13 23:40:02

Am thinking of going mossy green.. before I get too old for it, and before DS is in school (so he won't be the one with the green haired mum). Or grey. Do it OP!

Pinot Tue 12-Feb-13 11:29:00

Oh god no.

BelindaCarlisle Tue 12-Feb-13 11:30:33

oi pinot
purging twitter?

SmilingMakesMyFaceAche Tue 12-Feb-13 11:31:11

I went from very long to a 'frankie Sanford' style and I loved it. Maybe that's daring enough at first and then you could decide to shave one side from there?

Oh do you know what I'm going to do it ! There is a hairdresser in town and she has it, she looks gorgeous so maybe she can make me look gorgeous too !

I think my hair could be layered up to help grow it out maybe if I get bored, I do get bored with my hair

I had shaved my hair when i was 16 and got in so much trouble with my mum, i shaved it and then dyed the stubble purple, totally gross. I worked as a waitress and used to hide it, but when I had it I totally loved it andDp said he would be into it.

As for my friends they aren't into my style but I think that they will get it, my style isn't for everyone. I live in a village and they're pretty open minded round here

I used to have something like this, without dreads and freshly shaved, and with dreads and growing out

I loved it, tempted to go back to it. I found that when I decided to grow it out the best thing to do was to let it grow out then cut it into a pixie cut/bob.

It's a cut that looks best when really over the top, like this, this, this and this.

iMum Tue 12-Feb-13 11:43:46

Tilda Swinton is my Hair crush

I love it. Go for it. I love people who have the confidence to change their hair a lot. Crazy colours, white blonde, shaved bits, feather extensions, pixie crops...etc....

In your Elle link, Kate Lanphear is at the top, she is so cool, my hair idol. Am changing jobs at the mo, when I get settled again, if appropriate, I may go for this do finally. My hair is currently long and mid blonde/ombré, so it will be a bit radical to suddenly be cropped and white!

prettywhite go for it. If its shaved one side, surely you can wear your hair in a center parting and cover a little if the occasion arises. I think good idea to go to a stylist who already has it.

Pinot Tue 12-Feb-13 11:45:55

I can't get on twitter shock laptop died and my crap phone has a hissy fit when I try to download (upload?) the twitter app.

Tis a v sad state of affairs.

dexter73 Tue 12-Feb-13 11:46:34

My dd has it like that but she is 15.

Pinot Tue 12-Feb-13 11:46:58

Belinda are to who I think you are?

Pinot Tue 12-Feb-13 11:47:17

Goddamn phone

dexter73 Tue 12-Feb-13 11:50:25

She has it on the left side btw to show off her array of earrings. I am getting quite good at shaving it every couple of weeks! Maybe I should go into business!

Bought Dp a beard trimmer for Christmas I knew it was a good idea

Murder of goths I really like you with it, you should get it done again it really suits you

Tilda is always a style crush of mine, she does classy androgynous

I'm thinking of going back to it. Think I'll do it one sided this time, last time it was both sides because of the dreads. Makes it easier to cover if I have to look respectable grin

Think I might leave my eyebrows on this time though...

Plus I'm only 34 any older and I won't be able to pull it off

Ooh yes keep eyebrows faces need eyebrows

I used to go to work and forget to draw my eyebrows back on! My boss made me keep eyeliner in the office so I could draw them on.

VerySmallSqueak Tue 12-Feb-13 16:05:07

pretty I think you should go for it.

There is a lot to be said for a two-sider that you can cover quite easily,so you ought to consider that - also when you are growing out it can be covered easily.

BelindaCarlisle Thu 14-Feb-13 14:18:05

Warning. I've just seen a gaggle of teenagers with it. And not the type you'd like to emulate.

Ooh, I say go for it. I have had the same hairstyle since I was a teenager (ie 25 years) and really regret never doing anything like that when I was young enough to get away with it. And I regret never having blonde or green hair (went straight from uni to job so always had boring very dark brown hair.)

"And not the type you'd like to emulate"

I wonder if that means I was "the type" when I had that hairstyle then...

Pootles2010 Thu 14-Feb-13 16:14:52

Go for it. Its not my thing at all but looks like it is yours! And assuming you're the one in photos on your profile (at bottom?) looks like you've got amazing bone structure that will help loads I imagine.

BelindaCarlisle Thu 14-Feb-13 17:15:35

lol i had it last time around Tears for Fears style

Thanks pootles it is me, I am going to go for it I called the hairdresser and she was really helpful, said she would look at my hair and see what she thinks, she's the same age so I think she gets it. Reliving our youth...

Ooh quite excited ! I will post up photos after I have it done so you can all have a look ;)

TacoLeBell Fri 15-Feb-13 08:56:16

MurderofGoths Your hair in those links is fab, it really suits you.

Reading this really makes me want to do it myself! I've just dyed mine pink so would love it to look something like this- Another Ellie pic

Ooh I really really love that pic of Ellie Taco, she looks hot

minko Fri 15-Feb-13 11:37:07

Two reasons not to - Kerry Katona. Mel B.

LulaPalooza Fri 15-Feb-13 13:42:28

Go for it, prettywhiteguitar

You definitely have the looks and bone structure to pull it off and life is too damn short.

I love experimenting with my hair and have had all sorts of styles and colours and cuts but am now getting to the age where I can't get away with anything too radical until I am really old!

God I really dislike Kerry katona

Thanks Lula that's a really kind thing to say, I think that if you have a certain look then you're more likely to get away with it

And not look like Kerry katona ;)

LetMeAtTheWine Fri 15-Feb-13 15:52:57

What about something like this,

or is it too much?

Shes a sexy lady but if I did all that to myself I would look like I'd escaped from Alcatraz

Alright OP, think I'm going to join you in getting this done grin

LetMeAtTheWine Fri 15-Feb-13 17:11:06

ha ha - fair enough! grin
