'nude' lipstick

AuntieMaggie Wed 23-Jan-13 16:54:35

I want a nude(ish) lipstick that isn't a flat colour but has a bit of an iridescent(?) sheen but isn't too brown iyswim?

I've been watching the RHOBH and have been inspired by their lip shades...

notMarlene Wed 23-Jan-13 18:16:57

What 'nude' is depends entirely on your lip and skin colour confused. I guess you're after a pinky-beigeish shade though. Can you get to mac counter?

AuntieMaggie Wed 23-Jan-13 18:28:27

Yes that's right and yes I can but I get all confuddled when I start looking at lipsticks.

I have fair skin and really blonde hair if that helps.

coffeeinbed Wed 23-Jan-13 19:01:16

Kate Moss for rimmel No3 with a pink-caramel gloss on top.
Or Chanel Chic which is very sheer though.
Clinique Delovely Buttershine or Pink-a boo Buttershine.

notMarlene Wed 23-Jan-13 19:12:11

MAC Creme d’Nude
MAC Jazzed
MAC The Faerie Glen
MaC Cherish
Other Brands Are Available wink

might be worth a look. THere are plenty of swatches if you do a google image search. You should be able to get a good idea of the tones you fancy - beige based, pinks, corrally, whatever - and maybe even make a shortlist. But, please don't just order somethign. You relaly DO need to try them, IMHO a nude shade a 1/8 th of a shade in the wrong direction can really fuck up the look. With (for example) a bright red, if you do your research there's a damn good chance you can order blind and get it right. A nude shade is such a subtle thign.

notMarlene Wed 23-Jan-13 19:15:36

this is good. You need to click on the tiny 'load all' link after scrolling past the first few

notMarlene Wed 23-Jan-13 19:18:25

posted accidentally, twice hmm

yeah, the modle in the link has some frekkles on her lip which really help to see show sheer or otherwise the lipstick is. the lips naked here

PommePoire Wed 23-Jan-13 19:20:45

Hug Me! by MAC is my favourite nude colour. Also love Bourjois Rose Innocence number 11 which is slightly more irridescent.

smugmumofboys Wed 23-Jan-13 19:23:09

I have Chanel Boy which is quite nude on my lips.

Pinot Wed 23-Jan-13 19:23:22

Lisa Eldridge used Boots No7 lip pencil in "Nude" all over the lips and then covered in lipbalm - that was for Kate Winslet at some recent awards thingy in Asia. Looked gorgeous.

notMarlene Wed 23-Jan-13 19:24:39

that's all well and good, but, what's a perfect nude shade on me might be a nasty pink on you, way to pale on my SIL and somethign else entirely on the next person. Nudes can be fab but should be treated with extreme care.

Pinot Wed 23-Jan-13 19:28:49

well sure - but OP asked for opinions and that's what we're giving

hugoagogo Wed 23-Jan-13 19:32:22

I love UNE for lipstick, lot's of nude colours, but they do tend to be quite matt.

I'm sure it's not very cool, but I end up wearing a blistex tinted lipbalm a lot of the time as it's so easy to smear on and has a nice touch of shimmer. here

notMarlene Wed 23-Jan-13 19:33:12

yup. Shall we have some wine while we're at it? wine

I really fancy a way too bright fuchsia type pink lipstick but it has to dead matte. Totally. Don't suppose you've got any tips on that?

Pinot Wed 23-Jan-13 19:35:53

Nars Schlap - Sali Hughes wears this. It's pistol-in-your-knickers pink.

I love that blistex, hugo!

coffeeinbed Wed 23-Jan-13 19:37:47

Well yes.
which is why I'm not mentioning my favourite nude.
I don't think it will work on OP's colouring.

AuntieMaggie Wed 23-Jan-13 19:38:53

Thank you so much smile I will write a list of the ones suggested here and that I like the look of on that link and have a look in Debenhams... I just needed some direction as I always get lost!

What do we think about the really pale pinks? Like the MAC Innocence Beware!? Too young for mid 30s?

coffeeinbed Wed 23-Jan-13 19:39:58

My matte fuchsia is Funny Face.
Glossy one is a L'Oreal from last summer, forgot what's it called.

scottishmummy Wed 23-Jan-13 19:42:48

clinique tenderheart

Pinot Wed 23-Jan-13 19:42:49

Really pale pinks are awful on everyone, regardless of age. Remind me of frosted lippies that my Mum used to wear

coffeeinbed Wed 23-Jan-13 19:46:21

Pale pink is always evil.
You're better off with a sheer red.

Pinot Wed 23-Jan-13 19:47:16

Now you're talking!

MadBusLady Wed 23-Jan-13 19:47:55

I just skim-read from "pistol-in-your-knickers pink" to coffeeinbed's post and thought her matte fuschia was called Fanny Face.

<childish giggle>

Anyway, I was going to say character comes into it too, so don't be forced into a colour you don't like just because you're told it's "your" nude. I thought I wanted a nude lipstick, and according to make up counter people everywhere on me this means a pale heather pink. But I just look fucking stupid in pink, I really do. Turns out what I mean by "nude" is actually "almost natural but slightly on the brown side".

notMarlene Wed 23-Jan-13 19:55:31

Yes a a too pale pink is awful. No knowing if the Innocence Beware! would b e nude or too-pale-pink on you. If you want a nude pink (IYSWIM) it's best to match to the colour of your inner lip.

Nars does seem to be the thing for fuchsias! I like the look of both of those and Carthage too. I want matte though. Proper matte <sulk>. I usually stick tto ruby woo for this reason hmm]

AuntieMaggie Wed 23-Jan-13 19:56:33

I think the MAC marquise is similar to what I had in mind though there are lots of other nice ones including those suggested here.

notMarlene Wed 23-Jan-13 19:57:02

"pistol-in-your-knickers pink" exactly

Red is the way forward. Yes. unbeatable. I'm loathe to mention it 'cause I'm alwas banging on about it.

coffeeinbed Wed 23-Jan-13 19:58:56

keep meaning to thy Carthage. Is that a glossy or matte one?
Have Mexican Rose though - perfect colour, bleeds like buggery. And glossy.

notMarlene Wed 23-Jan-13 20:01:08

marquise looks like it'd probably be too pale on most people, but then if you're very fair. Who knows.

notMarlene Wed 23-Jan-13 20:02:50

Carthage appears to be as matte as nars go. they call the range Pure Matte. I beg to differ but it's certainly not glossy. Have not seen it in the flwsh.

coffeeinbed Wed 23-Jan-13 20:04:50

Oh I love my reds.
Far too much, I think.
having said that, just bought the prettiest almost nude one - Nars Mayflowers.

notMarlene Wed 23-Jan-13 20:04:56

Don't forget that what's your perfect nude in winter will probab;y be a bit too light in summer however thorough you are with the sun screen, just like foundation really.

coffeeinbed Wed 23-Jan-13 20:06:17

It's very similar to Funny Face on the website.
NotM - I meant Mexican Rose that was glossy.

AuntieMaggie Wed 23-Jan-13 20:12:39

I bought www.newlook.com/shop/womens/tops/bambam-tan-lion-face-body_267248418this in 181 which is an orange red at xmas - does that count???

I want something paler to go with my brighter eyeshadows (of which I have masses!!!!)

AuntieMaggie Wed 23-Jan-13 20:13:21

FFS damn copy and paste

AuntieMaggie Wed 23-Jan-13 20:15:29

Sunscreen??? ha ha ha ha... are you not in the UK then Marlene???

NaicePig Wed 23-Jan-13 20:25:46

S'long as it isn't FROSTED <shudder> frosted makes you look like you had a horrid chip pan accident and burned your muzzle off. Also, my personal opinion is that it creates the impression of a beard. But I think that's just me.

NaicePig Wed 23-Jan-13 20:27:14

Mag Marl means however thorough you are with the SS in summer. You DO wear SS in summer don't you? <stern>

AuntieMaggie Wed 23-Jan-13 20:29:17

my point was what summer?

dizzy77 Wed 23-Jan-13 20:31:17

I have darker brown hair: Clinique tenderheart as mentioned by Scottish mummy. Also possibly a tiny but of too good a "nude" match for me is max factor lip finity shade 001 - I'd really like something half a tone darker (the next one in their range is too much for me) You can add the incandescence with a gloss like the blistex suggested before: it needs a moist topcoat but don't think you're tied to the balm that comes with it as I use whatever's in my bag on top.

notMarlene Wed 23-Jan-13 20:32:13

Am indeed not in the UK grin Not anywhere warm either.

AuntieMaggie Wed 23-Jan-13 20:34:19

I bought sunscreen last year and I still haven't opened it.... the only time I was outside it was raining and I had a brolly over my head!

notMarlene Wed 23-Jan-13 20:48:43

<wags finger> that's Very Silly Maggie. You'll regret it voice of experience.

But, yes, the red you have is a classic. Just wear that!

AuntieMaggie Wed 23-Jan-13 20:57:33

I do have spf in my estee lauder foundation though sad Had it done anything other than rain here last summer then I would've used it wink

I love that lipstick but it tends to look a bit OTT with some of my eyeshadows!

notMarlene Wed 23-Jan-13 20:57:44
notMarlene Wed 23-Jan-13 20:58:05

x pots

notMarlene Wed 23-Jan-13 20:59:09

yes, it does need subtile rest of the face. Vary handy for rush days. swipe of nude eyeshadow, mascara, red lippy and BAM!

AuntieMaggie Wed 23-Jan-13 21:00:12

Thank you grin

Can't believe nobody has mentioned bobbi brown lipstick in nude. The perfect lipstick smile

Elemental Wed 23-Jan-13 21:41:26

Pom Pom by Soap and Glory is a lovely totally matt bright pink, by the way.

Elemental Wed 23-Jan-13 21:42:37

And my best nude is Confidence from the Poppy King No 7 collection.

notMarlene Wed 23-Jan-13 21:57:29

Ooh, thanks that does look like the range is actually matte, the shade is too subtle for what I'm after ATM but I'll definitely have a look next time in the Uk.

notMarlene Wed 23-Jan-13 21:59:13

babybarrister Wed 23-Jan-13 22:07:05

Nars dolce vita

polyhymnia Wed 23-Jan-13 22:18:26

One of my current favourites is Dior Addict in Incognito.

AuntieMaggie Wed 23-Jan-13 22:42:32

So which brand would have the best staying power?

notMarlene Wed 23-Jan-13 23:55:46

Mac is very highly pigmented so it tends to stay really well.

dontyouwantmebaby Thu 24-Jan-13 00:41:02

Lipstick Queen Saint Nude (altho can be too 'brown')
MAC Cherish
Revlon (forget name but always can get it in Boots)
Tom Ford Blush Nude (£££)

SaraBellumHertz Thu 24-Jan-13 08:15:00

Dior addict extreme is brilliant - fairly shear so any of their natural colours are good and a god send if like me you suffer from dry lips

polyhymnia Thu 24-Jan-13 10:07:23

Yes, the Dior Addict I recommended above - Incognito - is one of the Addict Extreme range and it's lovely and sheer. Certainly not matte but not 'frosted' either. Agree lasting power is good.

I have three favourites.
Mac Creme de Nude
MUA Shade 13 (and only £1, I prefer it to the MAC)
Revlon Mauve it Over.

I would definately recommend trying the MUA brand in Superdrug, for £1 the quality is really good and makes it a lot easier to buy loads to try out!

dontyouwantmebaby Thu 24-Jan-13 11:14:59

forgot to add these- maybelline beige glace, its a nude with a pearlescent sheen. Also, a brilliant brilliant brilliant one for wearing anytime, NARS angelique (almost a very pared down sheer red / nude if that makes sense!)

PoppyAmex Thu 24-Jan-13 18:16:32

notMarlene that link with the same person wearing all types of nude colours is AMAZING, thanks!

Heavywheezing Thu 24-Jan-13 19:06:45

For a cheap try rimmel Kate moss lip colour number 26. With a nude lipliner.
Google Charlotte tilbury and look for her feline flick. She uses a nude lipstick in that. See if it works for you.

kaumana Thu 24-Jan-13 20:30:55

I have the same colouring and I found Revlon lip butter Berry Smoothie shade 050 to be fab. I love the mua range but found shade 13 too dark.

AlwaysSleepingBeauty Thu 24-Jan-13 21:00:14

I find Nars Carthage pretty matte but a smidgen less matte than Ruby Woo. It is gorgeous if that helps! I wish I could wear nude lips for a change, but my lips are very pink and rosy so I look ridiculous!

notMarlene Thu 24-Jan-13 22:17:58

Thanks Beauty! It's a gorgeous colour and I'm heartbroken to hear that the finish is as right as I'm going to find. TBH Mac is already over budget, I really shouldn't;t stretch to nars - NYX would be realistic but if it has to come to shitty lipstick that doesn't stay put then, well, my lips are lovely as they are and I've 2x 3/4 full tubes of the lovely ms woo on the go

There doesn't seem to be a reasonable dupe of schiap/Carthage in the range and I need to go less blue rather than blue. I'm liking the look of mac impassioned, don't suppose you've tried that? It seems to have a similar intensity schiap and in terms of colour it's very close moxie, I'm hoping blotting and a wee bit of powder might solve the issue with the finish.

notMarlene Thu 24-Jan-13 22:21:01

And, rosy pink lips are fab - don't knock 'em!

notMarlene Thu 24-Jan-13 22:25:37

fuchsia swatch gallery should anyone be interested... (click on the tiny 'load all' link after the first few swatches)

Turquoiseblue Thu 24-Jan-13 22:52:40

has anyone suggested MAC ample pink Gloss - I love it and wear it daily get lots of compliments on it. Really worth a look

AlwaysSleepingBeauty Fri 25-Jan-13 09:01:08

I do have Impassioned (not that I'm a lipstick junkie or anything...) it's a beautiful colour that is less 'blue' than some if the bright pinks. It is more on the creamy side comparatively but not glossy at all if that makes sense. You might want to have a look at Dainty Doll It's My Party as that's a similar colour, quite matte and very pretty. Those lipsticks are about £12 in Boots and often on offer.

Havingkittens Fri 25-Jan-13 10:38:57

MAC Viva Glam V (ie.5) is a lovely pinky beige with a warm shimmer, suits loads of people and comes in a gloss as well as a lipstick. You can alter the shade slightly depending on your mood or skin tone by using a different lip pencil with it. My personal favorite is also a MAC one called Dervish which is quite a natural lip shade but on the pink side, but if you wanted slightly deeper you could try a colour called Soar.

Illamasqua's lipsticks are all matte and they do a couple of bright pinks. You can also use a matte fuschia eyeshadow (or something like MAC's Matte pigment) to blot over your lipstick if you find it's not matte enough for your liking. That's what make up artists sometimes do for fashion editorials. If you can't find what you want to achieve a look you have to improvise a little bit.

notMarlene Fri 25-Jan-13 10:39:31

Thank you! Dainty Doll is another brand they don't sell over here (like nars, soap and glory, revlon...) but I'll have a look next time I'm in the UK.

notMarlene Fri 25-Jan-13 10:41:09

x posts kittens.

No Illamasqua here either. I'm in the EU, not outer mongolia angry

notMarlene Fri 25-Jan-13 10:41:39

Good tip for blotting though! Cheers.

Havingkittens Fri 25-Jan-13 11:27:49

I find Impassioned almost neon and a touch on the coral side. A couple of my MAC favorites are Girl About Town (one of my staples) and Full Fuschia (not sure if this is one only available from pro counters) which is much more reddish pink.

Oh, and MAC's bringing out a couple of matte bright pinks in their SS '13 collection "Strength" soon so might be worth holding out for them? (Probably limited ed so if you fall in love, stock up!)

Havingkittens Fri 25-Jan-13 11:30:14

Sorry, I meant Fusion Pink not Full Fuschia.

AuntieMaggie Fri 25-Jan-13 11:58:10

Marlene that site is fantastic thanks smile

Can you get Make up forever where you are? Someone in work raves about it!

I cleared out my make up yesterday and threw loads away. However I'm now also after a nice coral after seeing one on tv last night... I need to stop watching tv!!!

Havingkittens Fri 25-Jan-13 13:23:18

Bear in mind when you look at colour swatches online that the way the colour shows up depends a lot on your monitor, and also your own skin tone. I just had a look through the ones on the Temptalia site and a lot of the ones I am familiar with look slightly different in real life than they do on my monitor.

notMarlene Fri 25-Jan-13 14:46:16

yy that's an important point! Even if the colour calibration was the same on all computers and we all had exactly the same skin and lip colours the lighting that's used to take the photos has such a large influence how a colour looks that you still couldn't get an accurate idea of the exact shade.

Still, they're nice to look at an give a good idea of the most significant differences between shades.

I ordered ruby woo without seeing it in the flesh but it's one of the most reviewed and swatched colours there are. Is also almost universally flattering, but even so it was a risk.

notMarlene Fri 25-Jan-13 14:51:58

Sorry, was so busy ranting that I forgot to thank you for the excellent tip about the Mac strength colours - I keep clicking on party parrot swatches and cursing that it's discontinued. Tother pink is interesting too. Will definitely be off to check em out when they're rereleased.

AuntieMaggie Fri 25-Jan-13 15:29:40

Well I've just 'tested' all my lipsticks on my hand... I don't need any pinks (except perhaps a fushia wink)

I definitely haven't got a pale nude but think the coral I was thinking of is similar to the orange/red I already have...

Now to find a pewter eyeshadow...

drfayray Fri 25-Jan-13 15:35:28

A nude for dark skin ( I am Indian) in case there is anyone reading this of a darker hue is Photo by MAC. I like to make up my eyes ( I channel Cleopatra grin) so like a nude lip.
I have some pix if anyone is interested. I like how the colour enhances the shape of my lips.

coffeeinbed Fri 25-Jan-13 16:59:48

L'Oreal Rouge Caresse has great bright fuchsia - it's not matte though, it feels very much like Dior Addict lipstick.

AuntieMaggie Fri 25-Jan-13 17:44:03

I may indulge in a more expensive nude as I'm going to wear it more often/daily and I have 10 quids worth of beauty rewards for debenhams.

lilacmamacat Fri 25-Jan-13 17:50:02

Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream lipstick is my fave - a variety of colours but all go on semi-sheer. But Google it for prices - it seems to vary wildly.

Helzepops Fri 25-Jan-13 18:19:12

You need nice white teeth to carry off nude lippy well :-)

blossoming Fri 25-Jan-13 18:24:02

I have the type of colouring that needs colour on the lips and my favourite every day lipstick is bobbi brown creamy lip colour in Rose Petal covered with MAC Ample Pink as mentioned b a previous poster.

Havingkittens Fri 25-Jan-13 18:26:45

Auntiemaggie - Lancome have a nice dark pewter eyeshadow. Not tried it yet, but may get it to try. I have Chanel's Illusion D'Ombre in Eptant which is much less greenish, and more pewter than it looks. Quite sparkly though. Neither very cheap though, unfortunately. L'Oreal look to have some good metallics but I've not tried them.

AuntieMaggie Fri 25-Jan-13 21:21:04

Thanks Havingkittens. I've got one from virgin vie in a set of 4 thats running out and I'm desperate to replace it!

Mewsical Fri 25-Jan-13 21:50:03

Ooh, an interesting...bordering on obsessive hunt for my perfect nude has been re-fuelled.
I wear rose-petal by BB and love Clinique Sweet Honey and Laura Mercier Baby Lips.Mac Twig and Cosmos are good too but I think only the BB has iridescence. All are quite pinky though rather than browny nude.

notMarlene Fri 25-Jan-13 22:22:54

Urban Decay S&M is a true pewter, looks like well, pewter.
Estee Lauder Cyber Silver
Mac Print or a wee bit lighter is Swell Baby

AuntieMaggie Sat 26-Jan-13 11:07:27

I think I meant taupe rather than pewter blush a pale shimmery one

Havingkittens Sat 26-Jan-13 12:29:12

MAC Satin Taupe is lovely. A medium shade thou rather than pale but you can wear it more sheer if you use a longer haired brush.

Havingkittens Sat 26-Jan-13 12:29:40

Thou? Though!

notMarlene Sat 26-Jan-13 13:31:36

YEah, that;s a really nice one. I like the Mac Paint Pot in Groundwork too.

AuntieMaggie Sat 26-Jan-13 15:40:47

My poor lips are so sore sad I have literally tried almost every lipstick in Debenhams today! I have learnt that brown is no good for me and anything too pale looks crap as I apparently have quite dark lips!

Anyway I chose Mac peach blossom. It is much less orange than in those pics more pink... So I walked around wearing it for a bit then tried a few Dior ones and came back with a Dior one on my hand to see if Mac had one similar and it was the same as the peach blossom only more shimmer... But they didn't have it in stock sad So I'm sending DP in to get it for my birthday next week and if they still haven't got it I'll get the Dior!

I then went to Superdrug to see what MUA had and I got two MUA Lipsticks shade 3 (fushia-ish) and 7 (mid pink?) and a Collection one called Satin Bow which is almost the same as the Mac one but more creamy and no shimmer.

No luck with the eyeshadow and I looked everywhere sad they were too dark. Will try to upload a pic of the colour I'm after.

marlene are you in a country where they have sephora?

PavlovtheCat Sat 26-Jan-13 15:47:38

i wear nude lip pencil with either gloss or lip balm on. Depends on how 'heavy; i want the look, sometimes I put the gloss or balm on 'before' the pencil.

No.7 range is reasonable enough and then I use a variety of gloss - clinique clear, Chanel Illumuniere, (sp), Motherplucker by soap and glory or simple vasolene aloe vera lip balm.

notMarlene Sat 26-Jan-13 15:52:33

Oh yes, that looks lovely! Nothing like the yukky beige shades.

I see it's in stock at debanhams on line...

notMarlene Sat 26-Jan-13 15:53:02

Nope, no sephora here.

AuntieMaggie Sat 26-Jan-13 19:17:57

I can't spend my points online sad but thank you smile

The colour I had in mind was a grey-beige with a pink sheen(?) - I saw something similar today in a gloss but I think it was too pale - sounds weird I know!

I have now fallen in love with this site and am after new eyeshadows!

AuntieMaggie Sat 26-Jan-13 21:04:52
Havingkittens Sun 27-Jan-13 11:01:25

Try MAC's Pretty Please lipstick over a beige lip pencil such as Subculture. Or if you want more glossy, try with Oyster Girl lipgloss on top. (other brands are available wink ) - In case you're wondering, I worked for MAC years ago so am really familiar with their colours (and own most of them!)

AuntieMaggie Sun 27-Jan-13 15:47:08

LOL thanks Havingkittens smile
