I love the deep red/burgundy hair thats around. But how can i tell if i will suit it? Im light blonde and naturally mousey. Chemically enhanced blonde for many years. Grey eyes and freckly but tan easily. Anyone got this hair colour? Is it easy to wear? I think it will probably wash me out but i think its amazing

fridgepants Tue 15-Jan-13 23:58:21

I have it. The thing to know is that it does fade pretty quickly, so you'll have to dye it more often. I use a semi-permanent by Garnier at the moment, so you could try that and see how it is on your skin? Or wash-in-wash-out thingies if they still exist... I've never gone blonde, mind, so I'm not sure how dying after bleaching works out - if you can afford the hairdresser or generally get your colour done there I'd check with them first.

I'm porcelain, freckly and have deep blue eyes, and a deep red really makes my eyes stand out. My natural colour is a very pale grey-brown but I suit red considerably more smile

Thanks fridge :-) im going to consult a professional!

MoodyDidIt Wed 16-Jan-13 14:43:30

i have dyed red hair

i love it, i just do it myself, i use the schwartskopf xxl live colour. and agree with fridge, it does fade quick

you are lucky as you are blonde the colour will take brilliantly on your hair envy mines dark brown so never quite as red as i would like, and i dont want to bleach it first as too damaging

holstenlips Wed 16-Jan-13 16:14:23

My hairdresser has cut a bit of my hair and is going to dye it as a test! Exciting!

holstenlips Wed 16-Jan-13 17:45:07

What sort of make up do you wear? I think my pale lashes will look funny

MoodyDidIt Wed 16-Jan-13 18:31:51

i don't wear much make up, and hardly ever wear mascara / eyeliner

but i have dark brows though. and am also quite pale, dont know if this will help you grin

holstenlips Wed 16-Jan-13 19:53:43

Which xxl colour do you use? Im not sure but i think i want a cherry red. Im naturally pale but freckly but i tend to self tan :-) and i have light brows and pale grey eyes. Do you have favourite clothes colours to wear? Sorry lots of questions!

MoodyDidIt Wed 16-Jan-13 21:35:22

i use "red passion" or "real red" ...tbh i think they are the same

and i wear any colour clothes really, no idea if any particular colours look bad or good with red hair though lol. and i used to fake tan, just not been arsed lately as i have barely had any skin on show as its been so cold.
just go for it! its only hair smile

JumpHerWho Wed 16-Jan-13 23:47:38

I have similar colouring to you I think, I'm blonde at the mo but have had dark red hair in the past and loved it. DH has banned it though sad it wasn't massively bright or brash, I think it was subtle enough and suited me but he likes having a blonde wife hmm

You will probably want to wear more makeup to balance the drama of the colour, and you can reassess what colours to wear clotheswise too - bright reds and blues will make the colour pop.

jackstini Thu 17-Jan-13 09:20:53

I have it at the moment, I have naturally brown grey hair and green eyes.
I have had every colour hair there is, mostly blonde for last few years but this is the first time I have tried this colour and everyone loves it - including me!

I have had to change some of my wardrobe and make-up to fit in with it but that's been quite refreshing

Easiest way to tell if it will suit you is visit a wig shop and try it on.

Or upload a photo and go on one of the online hairstyle sites and you will get a better idea

holstenlips Thu 17-Jan-13 10:42:40

Good idea ! Need to find a wig shop! Everyone i ask says i look better blonde but ive never tried red and just have a feeling i will like it. Fed up of the bleaching and yellowy ends!!

BonkeyMollocks Thu 17-Jan-13 10:57:30

I'm a blondie (very pale skin, eyelashes etc) and I went red for a while!

I loved it .....but you need to re-do it often. Scott cornwall toner for red helps give it a boost in-between.

I did wear more eye make up but mainly because thats my style, it added some warmth to my sking and I didn't look quite so dead wink.

I will say though - be sure you want it because it is a bitch to get rid of!!!

holstenlips Thu 17-Jan-13 11:12:36

I can imagine once you get it youre pretty much stuck with it for a while! Thats my worry. Appt booked for weds!

BonkeyMollocks Thu 17-Jan-13 11:20:23

Its not so much the red, its when I decided I cba to keep up with it or afford it really .

I had a few weeks of ginger (and I mean ginger) but it was either the ginge or have bright blonde roots and red ends.

I managed to get it back to a really pale strawberry blonde (which I quite like) , and its growing out subtly!

Good luck!

BonkeyMollocks Thu 17-Jan-13 11:20:41

Oh and if you do it we need before and after pics!

NoelHeadbands Thu 17-Jan-13 11:28:42

From your description I think a bright red would suit your colouring really well

NineteenOatcake Thu 17-Jan-13 11:45:13

I went from blonde to red about 2 years ago. And yes, it's a bitch to get rid of and the regrowth can be nasty (the roots are grey now, used to be mousy) if left long enough. But it's unbelievably worth it IMHO.
I'm a lazy mare so I get the hairdresser or do it. An all over tint then Goldwell Elumen over the top. It's like a top coat and oh so shiny AND doesn't fade nearly as fast as home colour.

JumpHerWho Thu 17-Jan-13 11:54:16

I did mine with home kits, was so much cheaper than my current full head of highlights! Keep considering trying a home blonding kit but just know it's a bad idea... but dark brown and red I found easy enough to do at home and seemed to make my hair lovely and shiny, especially compared to the effects of blondifying.

holstenlips Thu 17-Jan-13 11:59:36

So now im thinking cherry red ? Or Emma Stone red? Or Amy Childs red? Cant do links on phone! So want to do it but a bit scared!! My friend said oh well you can always shave your head!!

MoodyDidIt Thu 17-Jan-13 12:44:59

cherry red! or amy childs red - go bold and bright grin

TigerFeet Thu 17-Jan-13 12:49:46

I have it. Pale skin, blue eyes, light freckles. I've had loads of compliments on it, far more than when I was brown/blonde/lighter red shades. I do wear mascara most days though as otherwise my eyelashes are lighter than my hair which just looks a bid odd imo. Brown mascara for day, black if going out.

BonkeyMollocks Thu 17-Jan-13 14:05:38

If you have the balls for it go bright firwengine red.

It will suit with your pale skin.
If you can't quite face that then buy a slightly darker one (Amy child's) but make are its still got the brightness!

JumpHerWho Thu 17-Jan-13 14:23:37

Am envy make sure you do before and after pics and post them to your profile OP!

holstenlips Thu 17-Jan-13 14:31:51

I will do. If i go through with it! Going to go see how the strand test went later.

MoodyDidIt Thu 17-Jan-13 15:28:16

holstenlips Thu 17-Jan-13 16:23:59

Forgot to say..im over 40! It wont make my wrinkles stand out will it??

jackstini Mon 21-Jan-13 09:29:25

Am 40 and think it takes attention away from the wrinkles!
Yes - have to see pics holstenlips.
Am having mine redone on Thurs - grey roots! blush
Also going to look up Goldwell Elumen....

holstenlips Tue 22-Jan-13 10:31:18

Last chance to influence my decision!! Its tomorrow!! What shade do you have jacks? Ive been looking at the red/burgundys but now i also like the reddy/coppers!! I dont suit brown so i need it to be quite bright.

LillethTheCat Tue 22-Jan-13 10:53:47

I have red hair. I use this but thats only cos I won a load of it. I used to use this and prob will again when the hair dye I have runs out.

I must admit that I dont dye it as often as I should as it does fade quicker, but thats just because I just really CBA.

When I was younger I had blonde hair which got darker with age and Ive always suited blonde hair, but my roots look too dark mixed with grey now so would have to dye it more often so dont bother anymore. Ive been other colours, but I love being red so will most likely stick with it for most of my life now.

Go for it, its only hair you can change it again if you dont like it (though must admit it is difficult to go from red to blonde)

Good luck with it.

holstenlips Tue 22-Jan-13 10:56:38

Thanks Lilleth

snowgal Tue 22-Jan-13 11:25:09

Go bright red! You're inspiring me now....

holstenlips Tue 22-Jan-13 11:50:36

Im so nearly decided to do it...!!! Just a fear of the unknown...i love the red on other people though. My appts at 10 tomorrow. Havent seen the strand test yet due to the salon being shut in snow.

holstenlips Wed 23-Jan-13 11:18:32

Done it!!

JumpHerWho Wed 23-Jan-13 12:53:37

Pics please!! Do you love it?

LillethTheCat Wed 23-Jan-13 13:21:38

Oooh what's it like then? Are you pleased? Will it take a bit of getting used to?

jackstini Wed 23-Jan-13 14:52:43

Ooh - what's it like?!
Mine is a Maijirel colour - will have to ask hairdresser tomorrow which one.

holstenlips Wed 23-Jan-13 18:13:03

Well ; the strand test she did was ORANGE!! So we looked again and put on a dark plummy colour which she mixed with a violety one and a darker mahogany. Because i started off virtually peroxide white in places and mousy roots...its come out a black cherry/plum. And i love it!! My eyes look really blue. Will try to get some pics up x

BinarySolo Wed 23-Jan-13 18:21:33

Sounds lovely. I used to use Xxl colour to due my hair burgundy. It fades terribly but at the same time is a sod to get rid of! I've stopped doing permanent colours and if I fancy a change I use Directions Semi permanent dyes now. They have an amazing range of funky colours, and might be worth looking into if you want to refresh your colour without using a harsher permanent colour.

Always leaves my hair soft and shiny. I like Dark tulip which is a pinky purple colour and fades out nicely (no ginger or grey!)

Looking forward to pictures.

LillethTheCat Wed 23-Jan-13 20:32:49

Oooh I like the purpley look though wasn't sure if I was too old as Ive only ever seen late teens/early 20's with it. Now Im thinking maybe not.

Glad you like it

I might look into those Directions Semi permanent at some point Binary

BinarySolo Thu 24-Jan-13 06:50:53

Lilleth if you go purple with Directions, choose lilac over plum. Plum is much darker, takes ages to wash out, but fades to grey while it does! Lilac fades much better, can't remember exactly how, but it was my colour of choice for a while as a teen.

holstenlips Thu 24-Jan-13 20:20:28

Argh cant load a pic via phone sorry chaps. im still loving it. Loads of compliments today !
