Help me find some dresses I can wear in the day as I'm sick of skiing jeans and want to a little more polished.

Size 14 and 5'7

Come help me find some nice dresses and show me what you have?

juniperdewdrop Tue 01-Jan-13 19:47:20

I'll watch your thread as am same size and 5 8 and also want day dresses. I was looking for a nice jersey dress, sort you can throw on. Also fancy a nipped in waist one for dancing.

Check out the White Company -- if there's a store near you probably better selection than online.

juniperdewdrop Tue 01-Jan-13 19:50:35

Quite like this one.

Stylelostinlabour Tue 01-Jan-13 20:31:28

Was hoping for less casual than white company and with a bit of colour. I see loads of people wearing nice dresses, tights and ankle boots and look lovely I however can't find anything I like getting quite moody about it now..

iloveblue Tue 01-Jan-13 20:34:31

Lots of nice ones here

Stylelostinlabour Tue 01-Jan-13 20:39:26

I like some of the white stuff ones but its like boden round these parts and want something a bit more unique - ungrateful girl that I am

I like Dorothy Perkins for dresses.

daisydoodoo Tue 01-Jan-13 20:45:37

Not unique but I wear dresses everyday. I buy from all over im a 12/14 and 5'9". Favourite shops include new look, top shop, Dorothy perkins, monsoon and m&s. For more casual dresses/tunics I like white stuff fat face and joules.

Stylelostinlabour Tue 01-Jan-13 20:46:55

Me too but just can't see any on the website or in the shop as its one of my first port of calls

iloveblue Tue 01-Jan-13 20:52:20

Some nice ones here too

Stylelostinlabour Tue 01-Jan-13 20:56:24

Yes some lovely ones but the two I like as not in stock in my size grrrr

knitknack Tue 01-Jan-13 21:04:14

I've just bought this

(sorry links are awful on iPad!)

It's from a label called indi & cold which is Spanish I think but does beautiful muted dresses, this one's much nicer in real life. Great plains are great for dresses too.

Firstly though, work out what suits you - eg I MUST have a denied waist - anything that's remotely empire or has waist directly below the boobs (what's up with that? Are there legions of woman wondering around with waists directly underneath their boobs? (there could well be, I'm 5,10" so a bit gargantuan)) makes me instantly six months gone. So find your shape and then you can start happily hunting....

knitknack Tue 01-Jan-13 21:07:31

Defined NOT denied!

libertychick Tue 01-Jan-13 21:09:23

what about Oasis?
navy print
this animal print
coral acorn print

and lots more!

Stylelostinlabour Tue 01-Jan-13 21:11:17

Thanks knickknack - I know what I don't want nothing floaty floaty nothing empire or waist up by my boobs, I have the shape in my head but can't find them so probably don't exist.

knitknack Tue 01-Jan-13 21:19:10

Can you describe it at all? (love a challenge me, and lots of other posters)

Stylelostinlabour Tue 01-Jan-13 21:36:32

Right here goes

Nice material and not black (so not my colour)
Just above knee so not showing knickers when I bend over
3 quarter sleeves
Darts at side but no empire or anything else that looks maternity

Like this one at the top but not the bottom

Like this one but not so tight

I like this but not the neck

Does that help?

knitknack Tue 01-Jan-13 21:40:51

Blimey - you've just described the dress that I'm always looking for!! I see SO many dresses, especially in Warehouse and DP's that would be PERFECT if they were 6 5-6 inches longer! I'll post any I find and will lurk with interest! smile

Stylelostinlabour Tue 01-Jan-13 21:45:52

Oh and no bloody ties round the back either should be that hard should it...

I think I like this one but alas no sizes left

knitknack Tue 01-Jan-13 21:46:03
knitknack Tue 01-Jan-13 21:48:07

This one's lovely, but out of stock!

knitknack Tue 01-Jan-13 21:51:12

Are these too 'tea dressy'?!

Oh like the NW3 one that's the kind of thing could even live with the frilly bit at the front...

Have booked marked it

cheddarcheeselover Tue 01-Jan-13 21:59:14

I hate to say it but boden's got a sale on, some bargain day dresses at 70% off....

knitknack Tue 01-Jan-13 22:03:46

Ooh I love that blue people tree dress! I HATE ties too - they interfere with cardigans etc, it's just lazy pattern cutting! Wow, I never realised I had such strong feelings about dresses! grin

Stylelostinlabour Tue 01-Jan-13 22:07:06

Me neither until I decided enough I want a couple of good nice dresses.

This boden (shudder) might not be too bad but depends on how bad the material is a 7 weeks wait is just silly

DowntonSprouts Tue 01-Jan-13 22:09:03

I am 5'10 and need a 14 or sometimes a 16 to get a bit of extra fabric for length. IYKWIM.

It is so hard to get daywear to fit when you are tall. Waists are always too high on dresses. I am watching with interest as I would love to wear dresses with tights and ankle boots too.

juniperdewdrop Tue 01-Jan-13 22:10:08
Stylelostinlabour Tue 01-Jan-13 22:21:40

Maybe I should get the sewing machine out as there is a demand for dresses that don't tell you what colour knickers I'm wearing but not a Whistles prices.

I have boobs and long legs so sometime need a 16 too

Between us we must be able to find some?!?

That liner one would be good for work I think unless the front attracts attention to my gut?

I'm wearing [[ http://www.matalan.co.uk/fcp/product/fashion-to-buy-online/-Dresses/-Floral-Print-Belted-Jersey-Dress/67871&resultsPerPage=100&attrList=Dept,brand this]] one at the moment, it'd much nicer on than in the picture. They have a different colourway too, and a bargain at £16smile

Oh, I'm a size 18/20, and it's clingy where you'd want it to be to not look like a sack of spuds, and extra fabric round the skirt but to house a multitude of sins!

(Thanks DS2 aged 14 months for that last post...)

On a roll now, I've also just got a couple from Mantaray in Debenhams - this one and another that's not on the website, they have quite a few others but they're a certain kind of print, exactly my style but not for everyone I'd guess smile

NaokHoHoHo Wed 02-Jan-13 16:08:46

<slight hijack> Watching with interest as I'd love to wear more dresses, but I can never seem to find anything with sleeves, or more than short sleeves. That's fine in summer but how do you not freeze to death in winter? It's january, I want to be warm! Is it just a matter of wearing things over them? What sort of things? Am a bit stylistically challenged...

knitknack Wed 02-Jan-13 17:55:53

this arrived today from Great Plains (bargain!) and it's GORGEOUS - I'm so happy - I love dresses with pockets. (please bear in mind that I'm a redhead with brown eyes when dismissing colours! haha)

juniperdewdrop Wed 02-Jan-13 21:08:58

I love that Great Plains one knitknack.

SilverSixpence Wed 02-Jan-13 21:20:49

are you in London? there are some lovely ones in Anthropologie on sale at the moment. The website is good too, but saw nicer ones in store.

Stylelostinlabour Wed 02-Jan-13 21:25:00

Never think to look at Matalan will have a look on website sadly not in London til the end of the month and I guess they will be all gone by then

NewYearNewNagoo Wed 02-Jan-13 22:01:55

Fuck me the great plains site is annoying. Am I doing it wrong?

I got some nice dresses in the Dorothy Perkins sale yesterday smile

BookFairy Wed 02-Jan-13 22:30:08

On the high street there's a range at Dorothy Perkins called Billie & Blossom that has lovely day dresses. I bought 2 recently in the sale!

Online: I've bought quite a few dresses from Ruby Rocks - v quirky prints in flattering shapes. They have their own website but also sell through Joy. They also have their own small shop in London on Great Portland Street, which I discovered by accident!

(I'm on my phone so apologies for the lack of links)

juniperdewdrop Wed 02-Jan-13 22:46:54

Billie and Blossom for BookFairy. Hope that links properly as doesn't look as if it will?

juniperdewdrop Wed 02-Jan-13 22:47:20

Good it did smile
