I think I want one, don't know if there to "princessy eww"....

I have a red one that I might wear again. Dh says I look like a Chelsea pensioner in it though.

Inneedofbrandy Thu 04-Oct-12 22:39:38

Oh I don't think pensioner, I think glamorous!

I wish! I love them, and they are so warm, but they are also really not me at all - need fitted stuff.

Mine is military bright red with black buttons. I sometimes use a stick, I think I should leave the thread.

Inneedofbrandy Thu 04-Oct-12 22:46:10

No don't leave tell me how warm it is and do your arms get cold?

seventh have you tried one on?

lurkingaround Thu 04-Oct-12 22:48:32

I totally fancy a cape. But I feel totally ridiculous in them. And then I read a comment about carrying a handbag with one, what type of handbag and how much a nuisance it was. So while I fancy a cape or poncho, nah, not faffing about with handbags.

Bags are def a problem, arms don't get cold at all for me. I feel slightly pretentious in it if that helps?

Inneedofbrandy Thu 04-Oct-12 23:06:26

I need to go try a few on before I know if I will feel a pretentious twat, I can imagine with black skinny jeans and boots it will look nice. I don't always take my handbag and I do have other coats for shopping.... hmm

LeChatRouge Thu 04-Oct-12 23:54:38

I love them, I have three.

One vintage wool navy one with hidden inside buttons so you can make sleeves if you wish; one tweedy check one that has slots in the side, pockets and a big collar and one khaki one with a hood and a dipped hem that's a bit like a parka.

I wear my cross body bag, don't have too many problems.

I one ever became mega mega cheap. In the sales then I might try them.

babybarrister Fri 05-Oct-12 08:47:38

I have a red one too from a v old cape shop in Madrid - sesena - I love itgrin

nm123 Fri 05-Oct-12 08:50:26

Omg le chat they sound just what I'm looking for! Where did you get them?!?

hippermiddleton Fri 05-Oct-12 08:55:03

I have a mad yellow-and-grey tweed one from Anthropologie which manages to look like 50s vintage and Sherlock Holmes at the same time. Really warm and perfect for this time of year when it's too cold for jackets but not quite full-on winter coat weather.

Inneedofbrandy Fri 05-Oct-12 09:21:19

I want a red or navy blue one. Am very envy of those who already have one.

minipie Fri 05-Oct-12 12:38:16

Ooh, this might solve my maternity winter coat dilemma. Anyone got a link to any nice ones?

Inneedofbrandy Fri 05-Oct-12 13:04:27

Yes mini I think a cape would work, plus it wouldn't be a never wear maternity item because it's not fitted.

I want some links to please.grin

Inneedofbrandy Fri 05-Oct-12 13:07:32

Oh I like this one. See if link works...

But my budget is not £300

tethersend Fri 05-Oct-12 13:20:42

I have a 1970s welsh wool one. I love it like my own children.

gypsyfloss Fri 05-Oct-12 14:55:19

My local TK Maxx had some yesterday. Might be worth checking them out online?

Tuttutitlookslikerain Fri 05-Oct-12 14:59:03

I really need one. I use crutches, so I think I would be better off with a cape than a coat.

DH thinks I am mad though and sniggers every time I mention it. New look has a tweed one, but I think I could end up looking like Sherlock Holmes!

Inneedofbrandy Fri 05-Oct-12 15:03:34

Tutt I just looked online and the newlook tweed one also comes in grey!

Tuttutitlookslikerain Fri 05-Oct-12 15:28:04

I know Brandy, but I really fancy a navy one!

eagerbeagle Fri 05-Oct-12 15:35:19

I have been lusting after this outfit Tara Starlet Cropped Cape for ages but havent been able to justify it.

They also have this one Vamp Cape and this one Cosy Cape but I'm not brave enough to work them.

eagerbeagle Fri 05-Oct-12 15:37:10

I have a camel chunky wool cape from Phase Eight bought in the January sales and have to say I love it. I was even wearing it earlier.

Bag wise I find an over the body bag is easier to handle. I also make sure to wear long sleeves tops on underneath.

Legs wise, I either wear skinnies and boots or straight legged. Any thing wider than straight legged makes me look too wide with the cape.

minipie Fri 05-Oct-12 16:33:22

Dotty P has some cheap ones, I like the belted style as you can choose whether to havea fitted look or not.

I had a cape/poncho type thing last year. I loved it and t was much admired on the school run. It was from River Island.

Then I wore it to visit my mum in her nursing home on the dementia unit. Despite having no memory of anything said five minutes ago, my mum and assorted residents managed to mercilessly mock me for dressing like Clint Eastwood in an old western whilst asking what I was doing with "that fat man" (DH). A true leveller.

lurkingaround Fri 05-Oct-12 18:21:29

grin Elsie!!
I always think they look glamourous. But the what bag issue coupled with the feeling ridiculous in them, and now the fat cowgirl look.
That's a 'no' then!!grin

DontmindifIdo Fri 05-Oct-12 18:21:46

I quite like this one and it's in the sale, but I'm very short and I think it's too long to look good on me.

steben Fri 05-Oct-12 19:06:09

I love them but can buxom (ahem slightly porky) ladies wear them???

lurkingaround Fri 05-Oct-12 20:08:10

There can be a bit of a "District Nurse" look to them. Didn't the district nurse in Open All Hours (Ronnie Barker, David Jason, Lynda Baron) wear one?

Actually, I have my old nursing one in the loft if anyone wants it. Tis fetching .

TooMuchRain Fri 05-Oct-12 20:26:03

I quite like the casual DP ones, bit tempted...

lurkingaround Fri 05-Oct-12 20:29:37

We're they an official part of the uniform Toughas? They look a bit impractical, all the fabric flapping about.

lurkingaround Fri 05-Oct-12 20:30:26

Were not we're. Stupid autocorrect. Leave me alone will you.

For night duty, bless Guys hospital, still giving out capes in 1992.

lurkingaround Fri 05-Oct-12 20:52:18

Did you ever wear it?
1992!!! Who would have thunk in 1992, nurses wore capes. That was yesterday! (for some of us ahem mature-ish folk)

I wore it once when I was a very serious student nurse, then we used them for random table cloths or draught excluders. I feel a bit disrespectful now, it had the proper red crossover bands at the front and everything.
It was to keep us warm in the tunnels underneath guys at night when we were walking between wards.
