Scented candles as good as Jo Malone but less expensive?

I love the smell of Jo Malone candles, especially the pomegranate one but they are too expensive to be anything more than a luxury. Ive tried lots of others but they either dont have any scent or the scent doesnt last.

Does anyone know of a good alternative.

polyhymnia Tue 08-Nov-11 22:29:46

I much prefer Diptyque candles to Jo Malone - much classier IMO - but alas don't think they are cheaper. Also like Space NK's own candles which
I do think are a bit cheaper.

ujjayi Tue 08-Nov-11 22:53:20

okay, how cheap do you want to go? I love Ormonde Jayne candles but think they are similar price to Jo Malone.

This might sound rather far fetched but have you sniffed out Home Base's selection of candles? I have bought some beautiful candles from there (and I am a real aroma snob). They keep their scent and you don't get the cloying, cheap air freshener smell that you often get with cheap candles. At this time of year, their orange & cinnamon and white cedar are particularly good.

stripeybumpinthenight Tue 08-Nov-11 22:56:15

Morrisons do nice ones too and super cheap smile

I am a scent snob but they are lovely.

mumblechum1 Tue 08-Nov-11 23:03:59

White Company's Winter is rather lovely and Ocado give a 20% off voucher for them at the moment.

Moodykat Tue 08-Nov-11 23:12:41

Jamie at Home scent and saviour (or something like that) candles are lovely. I have Fiji apple one and it lasts ages and smells lovely! It takes turns with Jo Malone Red Rose.

puffylovett Tue 08-Nov-11 23:20:51

Neom? They last for ages and you can use the liquid oil as perfume. Not sure how much jo Malone ones are tho..

Make your own!!!

My giant thread from 2 years ago should still be hanging round the crafts topic. I still refill mine every couple of months and burn candles every day.

It's honestly fuckwittedly easy smile

galletti Tue 08-Nov-11 23:30:34

Stripey, I bought the Morrisons vanilla candles last week and all I smelt was candles burning. Which is nice, but no vanilla. What ones have you tried? I love the Ikea vanilla in a jar, but don't like the shape of the jar! This thread as reminded me to put a Jo Malone candle on my list this year though!

ColdSancerre Tue 08-Nov-11 23:32:27

I also make my own, because of Lauries fab thread, I have it in threads on watch still.

ash6605 Tue 08-Nov-11 23:33:46

Have you tried wax lyrical ones? I love the sweet shop one(admittedly not to everyone's taste!) it smells of rhubarb and custard smile

StellaAndFries Tue 08-Nov-11 23:37:15

I'm a Yankee addict, I love their scents.

brighthair Wed 09-Nov-11 01:01:39

www.candlewick-greens.com

she does Jo Malone dupes, and the scent throw especially from the wax tarts is amazing

blobtobetter Wed 09-Nov-11 06:59:26

Love Yankees and they have offers on now and then like 2 Christmas candles worth about £15 each, together in a box for £20ish.

Neena28 Wed 09-Nov-11 07:57:23

Neom all the way for me too. They are really beautiful scents and last ages if you burn them correctly. Also they are soya wax and don't live dark marks. I loved jo malone etc but wouldn't go back now.

dexter73 Wed 09-Nov-11 08:20:48

Could you post the link to Lauries thread please ColdSancerre?

ENormaSnob Wed 09-Nov-11 09:33:39

I like ikea and glade!

<obviously not a candle snob grin>

JosieRosie Wed 09-Nov-11 09:46:00

Wow, brighthair I've just looked at the Candlewick Greens website and it's FABULOUS! So many fragrances to choose from and the prices are very reasonable! Thanks so much for the tip grin

ColdSancerre Wed 09-Nov-11 09:52:03
teacoupons Wed 09-Nov-11 10:04:21

I'm a Yankee girl too. Diptique are lovely but rather expensive.

If you have a B&M near you pop in and try their vanilla or butterscotch scented candle in a jar. It's 99p for a small jar or £3.99 for a large jar. They don't smell very synthetic and have a strong long lasting smell that I love.

brianmayshair Wed 09-Nov-11 10:15:22

Geodesis orange blossom is very similar to jo malone orange blossom and has a 60 hr burn time at half the cost. Have never managed to find anything similar to pomegranite noir though here

ConfusedGirlSuz Wed 09-Nov-11 11:49:23

Check out Matalan candels. They smell scrummy and are really reasonable smile

marssparklesdownonme Wed 09-Nov-11 12:34:26

I love the St Eval candles from Cornwall. The Tranquility one is particularly lovely. Google St Eval Candles.

brighthair Wed 09-Nov-11 13:20:32

JosieRosie - I love them!! I always burn j&j bedtime baby bath in my bedroom, and I love the spicy ones too wink

CointreauVersial Wed 09-Nov-11 13:24:05

I was going to suggest Glade or Febreze candles. blush

I honestly can't imagine who would pay Jo Malone and Diptyche prices, but I'm sure they smell very lovely.

HugosGoatee Wed 09-Nov-11 19:27:44

Morrisons - I have a big orange coloured one which is maybe orange and spices or something, not sure hmm and a pink one in a jar which is fresh and flowery. They're both lovely, and iirc the big pillar one was only £3-£4 and lasts ages.

I have 2 Glade ones on the go - they're half price in Tesco atm - and the vanilla one doesn't smell of anything but the pink one is lovely and strong.

levantine Wed 09-Nov-11 20:25:05

Laurie, I tried making your candles, but they were never that strong - if you put essential oils in, how much do you use?

moaninlisa Wed 09-Nov-11 20:26:18

Arran aromatics

warmandwooly Wed 09-Nov-11 20:55:29

TK Maxx will probably have a mixed selection of candles. Try there!

TeamDamon Wed 09-Nov-11 21:02:53

The Little Soap and Candle Company aren't that cheap but are gorgeous. I have the lavender one - it scents the room even when not burning.

JennyPiccolo Wed 09-Nov-11 21:31:50

i was going to say arran aromatics as well. i was in the other day and the girl was making up a gift box for katy perry!

Granard Thu 10-Nov-11 12:10:19

http://www.maxbenjamin.ie/stockists/

Max Benjamin candles are FAR better than Jo Malone and much less expensive. It's an Irish company, link above.

FiFiMax Thu 10-Nov-11 12:11:09

Neom are very good

Granard Thu 10-Nov-11 12:13:30

Sorry, meant to say that they retail at 18 euro in shops in Ireland. Seem to be more expensive online. Don't know the UK retail price. But worth having a look.

Moodykat Thu 10-Nov-11 12:15:58

I like the look of those Candlewick Greens ones but how does one order them?!

levantine Thu 10-Nov-11 13:33:47

M&S ones are pretty good too - they're about a fiver

pinkbraces Fri 11-Nov-11 00:22:17

Thanks everyone, I am going to work my way through the list smile.

Tiredprobably Fri 11-Nov-11 02:41:01

Tk max have loads of candles really nice ones for £6/7.

brighthair Fri 11-Nov-11 07:02:53

Moodykat - if you click on orders and enquiries there's an email and you can email her and pay by paypal. Order form not set up yet wink

Michelefl Wed 22-Aug-12 16:38:27

The St Eval Candle Company have amazing scented candles, and they last forever... www.stevalcandlecompany.co.uk/ (plus they're made in Cornwall smile

True Grace. I used to stock them, so I'm pretty familiar with the range - Library and Sacristy are far and away the best two, but they have bazillions.

PerryCombover Wed 22-Aug-12 16:53:48

Okay

I like diptique and this only

Apparently the smell of Madonna's house ( by house I mean house etc) and It's lovely, lovely, lovely

Glade honey and chocolate on offer at tesco £2 each, I love them. (can't afford my posh candles anymore)

betterthannext Wed 22-Aug-12 17:37:12

the best candle I have had is from Village candles. It was years ago I bought it but it still comes out every autumn and scents the whole room .Also tk Maxx have great ones I like "this works" ones

notjustamummythankyou Wed 22-Aug-12 18:41:54

I second True Grace candles - have been buying them for years, and love them!

Have also noticed just today that True Grace has paired up with Mary Portas to create a special range for House of Fraser

Oh and agree about looking in TK Maxx. I picked up a lovely candle for £7 ish which was down from £30. Bargainous.

pottytraininghell Wed 22-Aug-12 19:43:47

White Company candles are gorgeous.... I never have a Christmas without there winter one. £20 & it lasts ages..

GillyChick Tue 30-Jul-13 16:41:15

The closest candle I found is by Sandy Bay - Pomegranate Rouge and available through QVC. Great Value

CerealMom Tue 30-Jul-13 17:11:59

Neal's Yard - don't leave black soot marks

Bamford (Daylesford Organic)

Neom

True Grace

eurochick Tue 30-Jul-13 17:15:53

I like the White Company and Diptyque too.

dontyouwantmebaby Tue 30-Jul-13 17:26:48

waitrose sell some lovely candles for about 6/7 they are long lasting and have great scent, not artificial.

would also love to see the thread about making your own candles, sounds fab.

Parks candles
Max benjamin candles
Just lovely.

HotCrossPun Wed 20-Nov-13 13:12:31
LittleTulip Wed 20-Nov-13 13:15:04

Another candle addict here!

Parks candles are lovely. Also like yankee candles. Is it really that easy to make your own?

Financeprincess Wed 20-Nov-13 15:04:33

I can't bring myself to pay so much for Jo Malone and Diptyque candles. I just can't! Even though they are lovely.

I really recommend M&S candles. They smell expensive.

Also just discovered Sanderson Primavera candles. They aren't cheap, but they are a lot less than Jo Malone. Lovely, chic smells in gorgeous packaging, printed with vintage Sanderson wallpaper designs.

polyhymnia Wed 20-Nov-13 15:24:21

Some White Company ones are nice .

ElizabethBathory Wed 20-Nov-13 15:31:32

I like Voluspa candles, especially the one called Branche Vermeil. It's like a lighter, less obnoxious version of Diptyque's wood fire candle.

cloggal Wed 20-Nov-13 15:50:37

Parks, often in tk maxx, are pretty good and their wild fig one stands up against the Jo Malone counterpart. Very cheap too. I think dedenhhams stock them too.

AwkwardSquad Wed 20-Nov-13 16:06:47

I'm with the posters who've suggested TK Maxx. I've just bought two more This Works candles - lovely Christmassy ones. They are £15, normally retail at £25. Space NK sells This Works so they are good stuff. I prefer them to Jo Malone although not to Dyptique!

TK Maxx has quite a good range at this time of year but you do need to sniff your way through the offerings (that sounds a bit odd...) as the quality varies hugely. They had a Miller Harris one and I was sorely tempted but it was still £30 and that's too much for me.

Another lover of Diptyque. Would also recommend Neom, Urban Apothecary and Bahoma.

Wilding Wed 20-Nov-13 16:42:03

Oh dear... just had a look at the Candlewick Greens website and I know what I'm going to be splashing out on this Christmas! Excellent prices & range of scents, am definitely going to be ordering some of those and giving them a try.

LittleMissRed Wed 20-Nov-13 16:46:47

I love Yankee Candles too, and agree that TK Maxx is great, especially at this time of year.
I also agree with one of the first posters that Homebase candles are really nice, esp the christmassy smelling ones.

AwkwardSquad Wed 20-Nov-13 17:06:55

Ah now I've seen lots of Bahoma at TK Maxx! May give them a try.

duckyfuzz Wed 20-Nov-13 17:09:56

Also try space nk sale, I got diptyque half price in the summer

macskater Wed 20-Nov-13 17:14:00

I got lovely ones in Muji. Shops are in London but they are online too.

bluebump Wed 20-Nov-13 17:39:54

These are lovely candles and scent a room really well. There are too many to choose from but i'm slowly working my way through them!

marleebrodie Wed 20-Nov-13 20:34:59

Arran aromatics....so good.

cloggal Wed 20-Nov-13 20:37:07

Oh actually, agree completely with marleebrodie, Arran Aromatics are lush.

For all Glasgow MNers, there's an outlet shop in St Enoch Centre, often half the price of the main Princes Square shop... Dangerous!

I usually use NEOM candles but have just had look at the Arran Aromatic website and might order some to try as they have 30% off some of their pillar candles.

Jemimapuddleduk Wed 20-Nov-13 21:01:11

Woodwick are gorgeous and Melt too. The Melt ones are a bit more subtle but last for ages and the scents are amazing!

hollyisalovelyname Mon 25-Nov-13 18:35:12

Try Parks of London. Divine candles- particularly Original. Often on Brand Alley sales or Secretsales at great value.
The Hyacinth smells of real hyacinths!!

fridgepants Tue 26-Nov-13 15:14:29

Another vote for St Eval. Inspiritus is lovely for winter.

Darna Tue 03-Dec-13 22:42:25

Milana candles are lovely, just as good as Jo Malone but cheaper and made with soy

Home base candles are excellent. I like their cinnamon and orange, sandlewood and vanilla ones. They are around £4 for a huge jar and they last for ages.

Yankee Candle smells are lovely, but I always use the little wax tablets in an oil burner as they are always far stronger than a candle. Break them into quarters, so you can burn 1/4 at a time until it loses its scent, then use the next quarter. They cost about a pound each.

Isle of Skye candles are gorgeous. Highly recommend!

TinyDiamond Mon 20-Jan-14 00:48:43

Sooooo second thread in a few mins that I've said this but... Next, 'blanc white light' £9. Trust me on this. So good and lasts well.

PastaandCheese Mon 20-Jan-14 09:28:47

The White Company for me too.

MrsMeow Mon 20-Jan-14 12:28:26

TinyDiamond, do you find that its quite a subtle scent though? I bought the Noir one as I have the diffuser and love it, but the candle didn't smell of anything at all to me? I wonder if the Blanc is stronger.

TinyDiamond Mon 20-Jan-14 15:26:25

I think it is lovely and strong it smells like Tom Ford white patchouli. Can still smell it the next morning when I go into room if have had it on night before. Have had a reed thingy same smell on the go since mid october and it is only half gone so they last 6 months. Not bad for £14 I don' t think.

Better value than rituals etc.

MrsMeow Mon 20-Jan-14 20:17:47

the reed things are v good value for money, I agree. I wish they did the perfume though like they do with some of the others, I'd definitely wear it as a scent.

I might give the Blanc one a go then, maybe I had a bit of a dodgy one. Love Tom Ford as well so that's swayed it! Hopefully they'll start doing a Grey Vetiver scented one soon wink

TinyDiamond Mon 20-Jan-14 21:12:18

I think they do do a perfume! check the website but I am sure I saw an edt at christmas think it was only £8

TinyDiamond Mon 20-Jan-14 21:13:08

Roll on payday I am off to next for home frangrances!

Thants Mon 20-Jan-14 23:38:58

Yankee candles all the way. I want them all! A lot of the Xmas ones you can get half prove atm. They don't all smell too Christmassy! I bought 2 today for 50% off at Clinton's.

beachyhead Mon 20-Jan-14 23:43:18

Zara home candles are amazing and 19.99 for a huge three wick candle

I tried two candles from Arran Aromatics and was really disappointed as I could hardly smell them at all. Will be going back to NEOM.

anchovies Tue 21-Jan-14 10:08:45

MrsAlwaysRight - I always go back to Neom too. I think Inspiration is my favourite one but I love most of them.

anchovies they have a sale on at the moment! <hides credit card> grin

anchovies Wed 22-Jan-14 10:09:19

Oh no! I checked for a sale earlier in the month and my credit card thought it had escaped!

hollyisalovelyname Wed 22-Jan-14 16:36:58

Parks London Original or Hyacinth- often on Brand Alley
Max Benjamin -Mimosa is lovely

ElizabethBathory Wed 22-Jan-14 16:48:50

I bought some St Eval candles after seeing them recommended on this thread, and they are totally lovely. Brilliant customer service too - the Sandalwood one I bought wasn't burning properly so they replaced it immediately and chucked in a load of scented tealights for free smile (There was a problem with the new formula of the sandalwood fragrance)

Bay & Rosemary, Inspiritus, Apple and Elderflower and Seasalt all gorgeous (I went a bit mad blush)

amazonianwoman Wed 22-Jan-14 17:58:28

Which Neom fragrances do you recommend?

And which White Company other than Winter?

I've had enough of cinnamon/wintery smells and would love something a bit fresher in anticipation of spring and to cover up the lingering smell of oil eggshell on my new kitchen units grin

I really like NEOM's Tranquility which is lavender, basil and jasmine. It is quite strong which I personally like but DH thinks it's overpowering!

ElizabethBathory do the St Eval ones have a strong scent? I like the sound of the bay and rosemary one - I love rosemary.

AmberLeaf Wed 22-Jan-14 18:08:57

I love the Glade ones too. honey and chocolate and the pink one. love something?

hollyisalovelyname Wed 22-Jan-14 23:55:56

Neom Morrocan Rose is lovely

ItsaMissTerri Thu 23-Jan-14 00:05:40

Another vote for Neom...loved the since they were called Natural Magic ...last for ages and smell even when unlit...the grapefruit bergamot and lime is lovely and a nice change to all the warming "winter" candles around over Christmas

ItsaMissTerri Thu 23-Jan-14 00:08:32

Oh...and as for White Company ...I like the wild mint one for a change it's not minty like chewing gum minty, just really fresh and clean smelling

BeaLola Thu 23-Jan-14 00:31:17

I like the wild mint one too from The White Company in my kitchen or outside in the summer evenings.

Rosieliveson Thu 23-Jan-14 05:12:51

Woodwick candles are beautiful.
They smell gorgeous whilst burning. Ice tried a few scents. Other than lily which was very mild they have all be beautiful and smell very good.

amazonianwoman Thu 23-Jan-14 09:04:13

Thanks all for the recommendations.

Headlikeafuckingorange Thu 23-Jan-14 09:18:46

Just to add something else into the mix - Melt are really good.

Leedsavril Thu 23-Jan-14 15:41:37

I also like White Company candles, I tend to buy them on offer also!

Flechas Thu 23-Jan-14 19:43:59

[[http://maxbenjamin.ie/our-products/candles/scented-candles max benjamin, have the grapefruit one and it's lovely, 18 euro as opposed to 40 pounds so definitely cheaper

Flechas Thu 23-Jan-14 19:44:31

oops. link didn't work
here

Flechas Thu 23-Jan-14 19:46:15

CointreauVersial, I would rather have a glade lime anti tobacco candle than most of the yankee candles. They are all very sweet, and just don't have that luxury feel imo

sunshinemmum Thu 23-Jan-14 19:54:20

Orla Kiely candles are lovely particularly the wild fig. John Lewis stick them but are cheaper at amazon.

therunnawaybride Thu 23-Jan-14 19:55:22

I'm a scentsy convert, they're a company from the us but have been selling over here for a couple of years now.
Similar to Yankee they have tons of different waxes to choose from but you warm the wax in a warmer that uses an led bulb to melt it rather then a flame so it's more child/pet/planet friendly I have 3 warmers in my house and was constantly getting asked where I got them..so much so I became a consultant for them.
You can google Scentsy uk and find your nearest consultant they'll usually come over with there tester kit and let you have a proper sniff!

I went on a candle spree in T K Maxx at Christmas. I bought lots of Bahoma candles/room sprays/reed things. I think they're really good.

Also have a lovely Neom one.

But, I still frequently return to Price's Chefs Candle or Anti-tobacco. Fantastic scent and value for money!

I do covet a Diptyque or Jo Malone, tho.

Flechas Thu 23-Jan-14 21:02:40

I also have a room fragrance reed diffuser from Max Benjamin, it's grapefruit and pomelo. I had thought that that was ridiculous as Pomelo is a grapefruit, but I was wrong. A pomelo is different.

sleepdodger Thu 23-Jan-14 21:50:47

So the real question is...
Will diptyque EVER do a sale wink

ElizabethBathory Fri 24-Jan-14 13:27:24

MrsAlwaysRight, sorry for the very slow reply. Yes the St Eval candles have a strong scent - not as strong as some, but the smell still fills the room quickly. I find with some candles (e.g. Diptyque) I have to blow them out after an hour or so because the smell gets too overpowering for my small house!

I wish Yankee candles had nicer scents, because they're exactly the right strength smell I think. But every one I've bought smells rank!

Flechas Fri 24-Jan-14 17:13:14

I saw a lovely one today, clementine scented, in a beatiful orange glass. The make was "torc"
Anybody heard of that make?
Same price as max benjamin, but never heard of torc so id be buying it for the jar it comes in if i bought it! Love orange glass though.
Do lots of citrus candles (different scents, grapefruit orange lime) do they clash or work together?
Maybe my house will smell like fruit salad if i throw orange in to tge mix

Thanks ElizabethBathory smile

ContinentalKat Fri 24-Jan-14 17:21:13

http://www.potterscrouchcandles.co.uk

All natural, no headaches when burning those.

HarrogateMum Fri 24-Jan-14 18:41:12

Harrogate candle company. The wow candle in dark amber & sandalwood on vanilla musk and lavender is gorgeous. It's a layered scent and smells divine (and I'm biased as it's a local company so supporting local trade)

hollyisalovelyname Sat 25-Jan-14 09:32:48

Torc is based in Carlow, Ireland. They definitely made for Dunnes Stores in the past and perhaps still do.

hollyisalovelyname Sat 25-Jan-14 09:35:15

Max Benjamin Mimosa is a lovely soft scent. In the Orange box I think

baskingseals Sat 25-Jan-14 13:12:12

www.lily-flame.co.uk
I love diptyque, but these are also lovely

Torc Sat 25-Jan-14 19:42:18

Hollyisalovelyname I just bought a torc candle! it was 'only' 16.95. I say only because a max benjamin or a brooke and shoals is €19 and this torc one comes in a beautiful orange glass jar. I see they do a basil and lime one too which sounds like a rip off of a jo malone one, but I'll try that one next. Pleased with it, the smell of clementine is not too sweet.

Torc Sat 25-Jan-14 19:43:36

I feel a knob saying this blush but candles in tins don't float my boat! Even though I did have one that smelt nice recently.

PapaMantra Sat 01-Feb-14 21:43:20

I swear by candle-lite candles, I get them from www.fragrantflame.co.uk. They do have cheap ranges sold in co-op but definitely try the ranges from the site.

I mainly buy the Revere House range and they burn perfectly and smell divine. www.fragrantflame.co.uk/product-category/revere-house/

I spend a fortune with them but they are still loads cheaper than anything comparable and have got a coupon code that may work for everyone its disco10 for 10% off

foxylady7172000 Fri 07-Mar-14 11:26:24
