I have been researching sunscreens as am always being told to use spf daily on my face. Apart from hating the smell and greasiness of any moisteriser with sunscreen, I was reading an article on the internet saying that sunsreen helps prevent some causes of cancer but not all, and the chemicals used in sunscreens themselves are harmful and cancer causing. I know the sun causes skin aging , but surely to put harmful chemicals on your face when we are in the middle of winter seems completely silly. I use no spf on my face from November through to April and feel like I am being naughty!!Anyone else being naughty!!

My friend is a dermatologist and she told me the single most important thing to do for my skin is to wear an SPF every day. She recommends La Roche Posay Anthelios XL and I have been using it for years. It's a very light fluid, not greasy. I have very fair skin and I'm not taking any chances

Verity, do you use a moisturiser as well? And do you reapply it at all during the day, or just put it on in the morning?
I always use a moisturiser with min SPF 15 in it, generally Simple, Oil of Olay, or whatever is on offer, but am never sure how effective this is. Should I be using a moisturiser and an SPF?

Sorry for sort of hijack fayeso, in answer to your op, I want to use an SPF year round, but am never sure if I'm doing it right!

Poppity, I use it instead of a moisturiser. According to friend, the primary function of your daytime moisturiser is to protect you from the elements. She says complicted expensive day creams are a waste of time. It's only at night when your skin is renewing itself that you should bother with all the high tech ingredients.

At this time of year I just use the sunscreen in the morning then foundation, in summer I would usually reapply at lunchtime. And wear a hat. Taking no chances

Thanks Verity, you've cleared up years of confusion for me! I'll be getting myself some of that then

I have used Clinique City Block spf 25 and 40 for at least 15 years. I am told I look 10-15 years younger than I am.

You need to stop the ageing UV rays getting toyour skin even on cloudy days. every time you walk out your door, you skin gets a balst from them.

Clinique sunscreens are chemical free they use zinc oxide as a block.

purplepeony So do you use the Clinque City Block instead of moisturiser?

Also, I have always wanted to know if you top up your sunscreen during the day do you then reapply your foundation again? Just not sure of all the mechanics!

Chanel's Precision UV Essentiel which has SPF 50. It is a very light base - not heavily greasy like many spf rich creams. It is perfect under foundation and I have also used it under Chanel's tinted moisturiser when skiing and never found it too heavy.
