H&M for children...

Previously DD had some great skinny jeans from H&M, and also a couple of really nice dresses. So I popped in today, thinking I would get her a new pair of jeans, and was quite horrified... They had quite a few styles, but they all had that "distressed" look, like they had been passed down by four generations !! DD is 3 by the way. I just wanted a nice plain pair of jeans. And I also saw lots of horrors - e.g. a dinner jacket babygro !!
There were a few nice things, but not many... Maybe my taste in clothes is different to everyone else.

its one of those shops where you have to rummage, there are a few good bits but alot of horrors {fake leather jackets for toddlers spring to mind. i have to be honest most of their stuff is not really to my taste but its ok pre school wear.

Long sleeve stripey tops and SpongeBob tshirts are all I need from H&M.

For DS, not me btw!!

Agreed - I ended up buying a couple of nice boys' shirts as Christmas presents, but I had to do lots of rummaging ! It's a pity, really, because I really don't think most people want their under 10s to look like trashy teenagers.

I so agree. I used to get quite a lot of good things there, simple and nice. Now I struggle to buy anything. DD is 4.4.

I liked it a couple of years ago, even last summer it was ok - lots of nice funky prints. This season its ghastly. i dont want everything in pink or purple with giant glittery kittens printed on - who does?
Am very disappointed...

ooh I do (giant glittery kittens, that is) - they are ace

rest of h & m seems a jumble sale this year though. was always good for print tshirts in the past. their leggings seemed designed for children who are all arse no legs as well this year

loved the jeans for children too. both dds have a great pair. Wonder if still available.

yes a couple of years ago was great, especially summer stuff. The glittery plasticky print seems very similar to benetton for my likings. Mind you this year I couldn;t find anything I liked in gap either.

Winder if my taste is changing, if I am getting too stingy. Luckily dd1 is forever in school uniform and dd2 has got all the hands me down.

oh yes I have been looking for skinny or bootlegs for my DD, normally get great jeans from there and last few times I've been in- no nice jeans at all. Did get a nice floral smock top to wear with the no jeans!!

Depends on the branch of H&M, can be fab or hideous jumble sale.

Really like their purple and deep red cords for £7 (like Boden but a third of the price) & dd also has a couple of lovely dresses from there early in the season but not anywhere to be seen now.

I bought the most fabulous (pink, I admit) dress in there yesterday for dd - floaty and fairylike, yet contemporary and slightly kookie - perfect (for her ) Agree that there were too many kittys saying hello right left and centre ....

I loved it when DS was a baby, but the little boys stuff is gross. All jeans and skulls. Although they did have a vintage style 'Kiss' (as in the band) t-shirt but none left in DS's size.

The girls stuff looks better, although I am over Hello Kitty so will have to spend some time rummaging for DD.

I bought some lovely dresses from there recently for my 2 year old - they're really fab. BUT I have noticed a bit of a decline in their range lately. They could always be relied upon for good quality, affordable, t-shirts and long-sleeved tops and trousers and I don't think that's the same any more. Also their sizing on girl's tights has gone crazy. They now do a size 2-4yrs in tights - how does that work?!

A little bit dubious about the ethics behind their production, so try to avoid now.

Their clothes are super cheap for sure, but at what cost.

Not trying to be very moral and have bought there myself previously.

we all want giant purple glittery kittens in our house too :P

I don't find them to be super cheap at all - about the same price as Next and Mothercare. I got loads of nice stripy tops for DS and some nice brightly coloured jumpers.

What do people think of those waistcoats they are selling for boys everywhere?

They still seemed to have some OK dresses this year, and I bought DD a good winter jacket there (brown, from the boys' section) but for basics like leggings and long-sleeved T-shirts Zara seem a lot better at the moment - more interesting colours, and more or less the same price.

Zara has some real mini-fashion-victim stuff of course, as well, but their basics are great.

glasjam, my 2-year-old DD has a pair of age 2-4 tights from there and they fit her now (and she's totally average). They're bizarrely stretchy, though (the thick purple ones with the stripey/zigzag pattern half way up) so will prob. fit next year too.

One thing that's good in H&M this year, though - girls' socks. They have packs of 5 in really rich green/pink/purple/orange/red. You often can't find the size you want, but I struck lucky this year.

I like H&M but find different shops have different styles of clothes in, so some H&m stores are better than others.

My totally average 3.10 yr old DD has some 2-4 tights and they fit her like Nora Batty!

she has a fabulous knitted Hello Kitty dress from there which she loves.

Are H&M childrens clothes not good nowadays? That's a shame. I haven't been to look for ages cos I'm not near one, but certainly when dc (especially dd's) were up to the age of 5 or 6 a few years back I always used to find lovely things for them in H&M.

I agree. There's the odd nice thing (stripey cotton knitted dresses and tights are lovely) but on the whole it's all gone a bit princess and pirates - probably surrendered to the prevailing Brit taste...
