How do you apply liquid eyeliner?

I keep trying to do this and I look like DS has been at me with a paint brush. It never looks pristine and flawless like I've noticed on bloody school children. I'm going to a hen night at the weekend and I don't want to like like a 6yr olds painting.

try resting your elbow on a table and applying it

Make sure there's not too much on the brush. Lots of practice!

I can't stop my eyelid from moving. It twitches when I put the brush near it. Will try resting my elbow on the table and see how it goes.

I htink it can look very ageing on older skin- if you are under 30 fine but otherwise looks a bit cilla black

Don't pull your eyelid out at the sides in order to get the line to go on straight (tempting as it is) - if you are older than 17 your eyelids will be slightly wrinkly, so when you let go your eyelid the eyeliner will be all wrinkly and will look like you put it on with a pastry brush.

Plus, the types of eyeliner vary differently. I can't get on at all with the felt tip style ones, it goes all Amy Winehouse. The olf fashioned looking ones with a very fine brush are the easiest imo - No 7 do a great one. However they all take a bit pf practice at first. I handy tip also is don't start off woth black eyeliner, you can't hide any errors. I mid-grey/charcoal one is best to start with. I have got a couple (well, my dd has nicked them now) which are very easy, they are sort of a cross between a fine pen and a brush and are both gunmetal grey, one is from Tesco Make Up, one is called Superliner from Loreal.

Also, glittery eyeliner is surprisingly easy to put on and not as Liberace as you might think, I use Collection 2000 and is very easy to put on, though takes a while to dry.

(You can tell I like liquid eyeliner, can't you!)

Sorry for all those typos - I haven't been drinking, honest!

I'm 36 - I'm blonde and have bought a semi-permanent red colour for going out at the weekend. That does it, neither will be getting used if I'm going to look like Cilla.

Dont add too much too quickly.

Try just adding near the outer edges first. It can be quite dramatic so go easy !

lol get a leather jacket and you are there
yes i liek the UD stuff too but that isnt a hard line is it?
i think a softer smudged line is often kinder! I also highly rate GREY eyeliner - the no7 one is ok ish adn the prestige brand blue grey one very nice

I got a black liquid one free last time I put in an Avon order. It's got a brush shaped felt tip applicator. I may just have to use a pencil this weekend and practise with the liquid one till I look stunning. I will be as old as Cilla by the time that happens so will get the red hair dye out.

Elizabeth Arden Gel eyeliner - very easy to do, in a little pot with a brush, you don't get such a sharp line as liquid, but it is hard to go wrong with this one. £14, wonderful.

I use Bourjois liner pinceau - it's very good, and much easier than some liquid liners with a long brush, and def much easier than the pen style ones.

Rest your little finger on your cheekbone (or find similar position whch means your hand is steady).

I personally do pull my eyelid out slightly, to get a nice straight line, but that's to do with the shape of my eyes.

Seriously, finally found that one a few years ago and would never go back.

(no, I don't work for bourjois)

Expensive but very much worth it (and it lasts forever) is the Laura Mercier cake eyeliner... I'd given up on liquid eyeliners til I tried it. It's basically the old fashioned stuff in a solid block that you wet and mix with a brush and then paint on. Never smudges and stays on until you take it off.

cake eye liner

I don't work for them either, just in case you were wondering!

I find at my decrepit age that wet matt bourjois eyeshadow is the easiest liner.

I have the metallic BB gel eyeliner in brown, tis good but hard to get perfect...my dd looks good with it though

Lauren Luke's eyemakeup tutorials (either in the Guardian or on her Panacea81 youtube channel) are very good.

Really pleased to see Laura Mercier make a cake eye liner - used to love spitting into my Miners one as a teenager (gloopy spit was better than water) had thought they might have been discontinued on health grounds.

Have you tried appying it from the outside in? I find it much easier doing it this way

If you cock it up and the line is a bit wobbly just paint it on and then take a cotton bud dipped in eye make up remover and tidy up any smudges.

Shu Umera do a fab one - I think that is what it is called - the gold lettering is starting to rub off!

Never use red or anyhting slightly reddish near your lash line looks like you have got the disease that kills bunnys!
