Can someone talk me through using hair tongs?

I have long hair.
How do you wind sections around the tong? Do you secure the end under the clip part and then wind the rest of the hair on top? Or do you wind all the hair around while holding clip open and then close clip over total hair coil?
There must be a knack to this, any tips gratefully received.

Hi Mrs SB, I think you secure the end of the hair in the grip part of the thing and wind up or round depending on which way you want your curl to go.

Is there a youtube video that could show you?...its always my default place to look for stuff like that.

I got some GHDs for Christmas last year, and they came with a DVD. "How difficult can they be?" I thought? How wrong was I.

Still can't get the hang of using them, so they're still in their box!

Thank you! Yes it does look like you clip the end under the grip part. I'm not sure why he started half way up the strand though, and then had to hold the end all the time - I'd never manage that one-handed.

Maybe its to stop that kink you can sometimes get in the bit of hair in the grip.

BIWI - were the GHDs tongs or the normal straigteners? Unsure if GHD also do tongs, as I know you can use straighteners to curl as well.

My dd has tongs with a 'helter skelter' on the shaft (sounds painful) and they are very easy to use.

They are normal straighteners, and you can curl as well. Except I can't. Nor can I straighten my hair! And they always make my hair go really frizzy, even though I put some 'product' on first.

To curl easily with GHD straigtners wrap hair arount the end of a metal tail comb. Apply heat via GHD's and voila. Nice and easy

BIWI, I have the same problem using GHDs to curl, it never works for me either. I think you have to twist and move the hair really slowly and I find the movement nigh on impossible, like my arms are not long enough.

Sigh. I don't think I was cut out to be a girl.

It does take practise, but if I can straighten my hair, anyone can!

With GHDs clamp the top of the hair - flip them 180 degrees then slowly pull down, then when you unclamp and a wave appears twirl it with your finger into a curl.

Its really easy but you have to practice practice practice. I don't use products (other than hairspray) but my friend swears by this- www.boots.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?categoryParentId=4394&storeId=10052&productId =14140&callingViewName=&categoryId=4605&langId=-1&catalogId=11051

Are your tongs wide barrel? If I am curling my whole head I use a mix of tongs and GHDs for variety.

I have the YouCurl and it is pretty good! Although, my friend uses those tongs with the helter skelter lines and her curls are perfect - sometimes with my GHDs and YouCurl one side of my hair goes great, the other side not to great.

Like the idea of the metal tailcomb SeaShells but don't you end up with really tight curls?

Depends on how big the sections of hair are that you take. For bigger curls take at least a one inch section. For tighter curls use smaller sections.
