I am clueless about this sort of thing and I've bought patent dark grey shoes - will black trousers be ok or does it have to be grey?

The shoes are very dark grey - almost pewter. I( knew I was clueless as I was thinking maybe brown! Top half is yet to be decided.
Thankks for that - I will confidently wear my black trousers now.

I like black with grey, it looks more interesting than all grey and not as ordinary as all black, and its a good background for a splash of vibrant colour in accessories

Actually...grey is THE colour to wear with brown and vice versa!

What I mean is, grey clothes look great with dark brown accessories- even T&S say so!
It looks more sophisticated and doesn't "kill" grey like black can.

Traditionally, if men wear pale grey suits, they were supposed to wear brown shoes with them. (So my mum tells me and she is 80+).

yup, grey and brown verrrry chic

I have a brown, short sweater dress from Mango

looks fab with brown biker boots, grey wooly tights, knee length grey wooly socks (yes, both at same time, very cosy) and a brown/cream/grey striped long cardi

oh, and some sorta scarf with silver/grey colours in it
