I'm basically an hourglass but have fat thighs. So rather than going in at the waist, out at the hips and a smooth curve down my thighs I go in at the waist-out to the hip bones-in a bit-out a bit then curve down my legs.

I could do with losing some weight from my legs probably, but is there anything that will help smooth that out under a dress? Maybe something shorts style? My stomach is flat so I don't know if I'd need a whole-body type thing, or do they give the best shape?

It's mainly for under a short dress that I'm thinking of at the moment, so can't be too long in the thigh. Any recommendations please?

No answers I'm afraid, but I have the same problem - I have so called 'violin hips' and I find it so hard to dress. Trousers give me a weird muffin top and dresses and skirts hang really weirdly on me because of them. I find that normal shapewear just accentuates the weird hips rather than smooth them out.

I'm currently a size 12/14 and could do with shifting a little weight, but even when I was a size 8 I still had the issue.

I've never heard them called violin hips grin I'm sorry you have the same thing, but glad somebody else knows what I'm talking about!

Fit and flare look nice on me because I have a small waist, but I don't want to wear that all the time and a lot of other stuff kind of looks like I'm wearing underwear that's too small and digging in at the bottom... This dress looks really nice from the side but from the front you can see the seams sort of 'hang' for a couple of inches.

It's not fair - down to my hip bones looks nice then from mid-thigh down it's fine, it's just that middle bit! <sulks>

I have MASSIVE hip dips, I just never knew they had a name!!

I wear m&s hold in tights - magic wear with skirts.
Under dresses, I wear those tights with a sort of dress shaped hold in thing too (from eBay) it's really good. A copy of spanx I think. It works really well, and almost makes it disappear....

Those of you with hip dips HAVE to at least try this:http://m.asos.com/asos/asos-minimal-playsuit-with-short-sleeve/prd/6667879?iid=6667879&clr=Black&SearchQuery=minimal%20playsuit&pgesize=7&pge=0&totalstyles=7&gridsize=4&gridrow=1&gridcolumn=3&affid=10607&pubref=1171&transaction_id=102c3ea8944a40245c1b07b1e9b63c

It doesnt look much, I'll give you that, BUT it's loads better irl and the shape is perfect!! It's got a bit if a cos vibe about it. JamieVardy put me onto it. It's bloody perfect for our shape, I tell you!!

I had my DS 7 weeks ago and just bought a pair of Spanx shorts today to go under a dress for a wedding. Wow they are amazing! They are soft breathable Lycra and look like high waisted cycling shorts and they definitely help both tummy & thigh lumps and bumps. John Lewis price matched and I got them for £24.
