Hair ideas for person not interested in hair

Can anyone suggest a good shortish hairstyle for thick hair for someone who cannot be bothered to do lots of/any styling at all? I've tried to go shorter a few times e.g. bob type styles but every time I end up thinking my hair is just too thick and it goes all mushroom/triangle style. Currently shoulder length and I just tie it up but it's so boring. Do I need to go REALLY short?!
