Why is red wine causing puffiness?

I'm not a heavy drinker. Probably a bottle of red, per week. I'm finding though that my under eyes are puffy next day despite drinking lots of water. I am 54 and AM stressed to fuck (which is ongoing.... nothing I can do).

I have gained some weight. Have started HRT. Get plenty of exercise walking the dog 2 hrs daily so, am not sedentary.

Have had two small glasses of red this evening and will probably do the same tomorrow but don't drink in the week.

I suppose I could give up entirely but am just wondering "why now"? I've drunk all my adult life (apart from my 30's when I had a young child) and a big chunk of my 20's when I was always at the gym and my body was a temple!).

Anyone else? Any tips (besides stop drinking)

Organic wine might be worth a punt

I have no idea sorry. But I think you should give up the wine. And drink gin Wink

I've stopped drinking wine. I can't drinking it anymore. I'm in my mid 40s and wine now causes me to have night sweats and insomnia. Persumably its hormonal. I second the suggestion - switch to gin.

might be the sulphur?
try wine without to see if it is, but it would be better to not have any at all.

Ok. Thanks for the suggestions. I don't drink anything else. Never done spirits or lagers/cider.

Will try organic and sulphur free (if there is such a thing!?)

Not sure what it is in red wine, but I get this too after just one glass of red wine - the next day I am pale and puffy. I can drink a bottle of lots more white wine and be fine, weirdly.

I get a rash on my face with some wines. I researched it and seemingly it can be the additives within it. It has also happened with other alchohol. I dont drink that much tbh and when it happens it feels like sunburn. My face
feels very hot and gets a fine red rash that is patchy.
I wonder if it is something like an allergic reaction?

Some people get an intolerance to the tannins in red wine, and red wine is also very high in histamine. If you are very stressed then your digestion is also probably not quite at the top of its game which doesn't help histamine sensitivity.

White wine has very little tannin so you could try that or low tannin reds like Pinot Noir, Burgundy or Sangiovese. You could also try taking an anti histamine before bed and seeing if it helps!

I get this. I was presuming it was the rosacea I've developed but interesting to read about sulphate/tannin/histamine reaction...hmmm, thinking...

yeah it's the histamine. I can't be bothered to google, but some varieties are better than others, so you'll have to find out and switch to those.

Agree it might be the histamine in the red wine that's causing an allergic reaction.
I no longer touch red wine as after drinking a couple of glasses my chest always feels tight and I feel as though i have a cold coming on - I've been told that this may be the histamine and that it can sometimes bring on asthma attacks.
