Help with greasy hair!

joanne90 · 28/08/2016 21:30

Please help ladies!

My hair gets greasy again after washing around a day later 😞.

Ive resorted to wearing it back, and washing it just twice a week, I dont dye it or even use conditioner. Just a small amount of shampoo and I always rinse thoroughly.

Any ideas please?

Some dry shampoos work a treat, use the ones for extra volume tuo get your hair up off your scalp.
It might be hormones - what age are you? Has it always been oily?

Wash it every day using a clarifying shampoo. Pantene does a good one (clear shampoo in clear bottle).

Try dry shampoo on in between days if washing every day isn't going to happen. It can disguise the greasiness, but I hate the way it makes my hair feel, so I'd rather just wash it.

Rather than going for a strong shampoo get a mild one and accept you have to wash your hair every day. I agree clarifying is the new word for greasy but I don't think think it makes much difference to how quickly your hair gets greasy.

Personally I hate dry shampoos they make me feel grubby. If I know I can't wash my hair ( usually because I am travelling) I rub a rather large amount of talc into it before bed which works better than dry shampoo for me, my hair is very greasy and I need half a can to have a effect, which is probably why it feels horrid on me.

I use head and shoulders for greasy hair everyday.
Only put conditioner on the ends

I have the same problem. I've found that if I add dry shampoo (the cheap one from Tesco as Batiste costs too much) after I've dried my hair then I can get three days out of it if I need to, although tbh I prefer to wash it every day. Some days though there just isn't time in a morning.

I've had good results with the L'Oréal clay shampoo and conditioner in the pale green bottles. Good for greasy roots. Often on offer too in supermarkets.

Reverse washing/conditioning. I wash my hair every day (Which I realise is not good but I've done it for years and not about to stop) but day 2 it would be greasy so would either tie it back or just wash it again.

I then heard about reverse washing, which is basically wetting your hair, applying conditioner, leave it for a minute or so, loosely wash out with water, and then shampoo your hair. Don't re-condition.

Some people find it hard to comb through afterwards, but personally I don't have this problem. Then blow dry as normal. My hair is much softer afterwards, and doesn't get as greasy and I can get 2 days out of it, and ebven wear it down on day 2 (previously unheard of!). It feels weird at first, but you soon get used to doing it the 'wrong way around'.

There are 'specialist' shampoo and conditioners for this process (Tresemme do one), and whilst they're good, I do it with any bog standard shampoo and conditioner.

Another thing I have discovered which is brilliant is Percy & Reeds 'Smoothed, Sealed & Sensational Volumising No Oil, Oil' which you can get online. M&S sell it too (I'm going to stock up on a 20% off day). I got it as a sample and its really great, doesn't weigh your hair down at all. My hair has taken on a new lease of life!

I've also just accepted it. I have fine hair and not much of it and think this is why. I also don't dry it out by bleaching or anything. It is in good condition.

Another vote for reverse washing! I don't do it every time I wash my hair but I'd say once out of every three washes. I have really fine hair and I find it's always softer after a reverse wash and lasts a couple extra days. Like a PP, I just use normal shampoo and conditioner - don't fall for Tresemmes reverse washing range. I do freshen up with dry shampoo pretty much every day. I can generally get two or three days (at a push) of my hair being down then a day tied up before it needs washing. The less I wash my hair, the less greasy it gets.

I'm 53 and have been washing my hair every other day since I was about 12 for this reason. Why fight against nature? I rarely use conditioner at all, maybe a bit when on holiday and washing hair every day after swimming.

I think what you describe is normal for a vast number of people (me included) it's not something I would consider a 'problem'.

What's wrong with washing your hair daily?

I'm sorry to say it but you may look a bit grubby in between washes.

I think a lot of it is just down to your own hair type - I have dry hair and a really dry scalp, and I only wash mine once or twice a week. I have found that the more you wash it the more it seems to need washing though.

Mine is like this so I wash it ever day. Why wouldn't you do this if hair is greasy?

Report
MitzyLeFrouf · 29/08/2016 15:47

I'd be lost without dry shampoo. A spritz on freshly washed and dried hair gives it a bit of oomph and keeps the grease at bay.

With dry shampoo I wash my hair every other day. Without it I'd have to wash my hair every day and even still the front strands would be greasy by the end of the day. It's just the type of hair I have!

You don't say if this has always been the case or if it's a recent change. If it's recent, it could be hormonal so get that checked out. If it's always been this way then you've got to look at ways to manage it. I'm the same and I do the following which help a great deal:

  • get highlights (bleach opens the shaft and makes it thicker) so stops it sticking to your scalp so much.
  • wash your hair every day. (I sometimes do mine twice a day).
  • use a clarifying shampoo or one for greasy/fine hair.
  • keep conditioner away from your roots
  • blow dry your hair in sections with a large round bruch (don't blast it)
  • use dry shampoo as a last resort (although I always find this makes fine hair look dirty but great if you've got thick hair).

I find that using only conditioner, no shampoo, means my hair gets less greasy. Still have to wear it up on day 2 but it looks and feels better than when I use shampoo.

Im another with greasy hair, I wash every day if I leave for 2 it's just pretty grim. I'm interested in the reverse washing idea, does it actually leave any conditioner or isn't the shampooing just washing it all out?

I have just accepted that I have to wash my hair everyday. If I don't wash it I just spend all day wishing I had washed it and feel crap.

I may have to start washing mine every day. Like a pp's it is fine and not much of it. The people who do this, do you blow dry every day? I am worried about heat damage.

Report
MrsCampbellBlack · 29/08/2016 18:53

Agree with practically everyone else - just wash your hair every day. I only use conditioner about twice a week.

I wish more people would wash their hair more often if it is fine - honestly greasy hair is horrid and stinks.

I totally accept curly/thick hair is very different and needs washing less often.

Yes I blow dry every day but always use a heat protection spray so I don't worry about heat damage.

I blow dry every day and use a volumising spray. To be honest my hair is so fine that I don't worry about heat damage - I have never had a split end.

I have the same problem. It's got worse after having DC. I'm thinking I might have to start washing my hair everyday too. I blow dry and straighten my hair though so I'm worried I'll do too much damage.

I've also been using a clarifying shampoo and it's done sod all so far Sad
