I'm in my mid thirties and finally got my armpits waxed for the first time ever (i've been shaving, not running around hairy) and it is SO SO much better. It hurt obviously but was totally bearable and my armpits are so smooth.

Just thought I'd share that with you all.

I've been waxing my pits for years.
First time I thought "Never Ever Again" but in time it gets finer.
I used to have a real 5 o' clock shadow, now even when it gets feral (in winter) its not too bad.

My Resolution now I'm 50, is to always have my underarms fit for public viewing

Em mine was about 1/4 inch I think?? You should totally try it. I never thought I would but I know someone training and she needed a Guinea pig. Never shaving again.

I'm right there with you but I epilate. Stung like mad the first time but I've kept on top of it and hair is now so fair and fine now it's completely painless!
If only I could get there with bikini line

Yep, discovered this about 8 years ago.
Even when I leave it to grow out for weeks and weeks, there is Harley anything there at all!! I epilate. It takes mins, costs nothing, and I am always "underarm ready".

I've epilated mine for about 10 years - hurt like hell the first time but now barely stings and takes seconds. Doesn't need doing often and regrowth is sparse with no shadow. Much prefer it to shaving my armpits!

Huck, chill out. I apologise for upsetting you. I hate pressure on girls to be 'acceptable' in some way, so I challenge posts or things people say that imply women are 'ready' when they have depilated etc.

I don't need to know whether you feel my standards are acceptable to you or not!! Personally - I don't want to walk out with hairy armpits on show. That's my prerogative. And I am 43, so - pretty good with not being a young impressionable teen.
I'm on a style and beauty thread on mumsnet, so don't expect many young teens to be reading my views.

If you can't say something nice - how about not saying anything at all.

And I don't need to chill out, you need to think about how you make people feel, not just words on a page.

Well that was unexpected! I started a lighthearted S&B thread and it's turned into a bun fight.

Yes, admittedly depilating does conform to a societal norm and cultural expectation. No it is not compulsory. Personally it's something I feel better for having done.

The patronising and comments from those who prefer not to is a little disappointing (whether meant to be patronising or not that's how they read). Surely the point is that women should have choice. It is ok to shave. It's ok not to shave but power lies in being able to make the decision; so suggesting that women who do chose to remove hair is 'pathetic' is imho no better than judging those who don't.

Anyhow, that's my 4am sleep-deprived 2 cents worth.

I don't get the "ready" thing though. Not from some kind of uber-feminist perspective (bore off, sorry, but really) but because shaving every day takes about a minute and you're smooth every day, whereas allowing enough to grow back to be able to wax it must mean a good week of being reasonably hairy. How is that better?

I get mine lazered. It's brilliant because after 6 sessions the hair is gone forever. I used to have such sensitive underarms from shaving and could only use very few deodorants, so it is much easier now.
