Losing the will to go on.. Sorry, it's another wedding guest outfit plea for help!

So I have tried on so many dresses ( well - probably about 20 - mainly courtesy of asos ) but most have been wrong. I'm about 5'3/5'4, size 8-10, fairly straight up and down, not much of a waist, but pot belly is probably my worst feature ( other than the face and hair ).
I am happy with my arms and legs but as they are not the longest I think I suit knee length or just above.
I found this www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-darcie-jersey-dress/p2543062?colour=Navy but the length was all wrong. I quite liked the neckline and the navy but wasn't all that keen on the ruffle ( but after 3 hours in Westfield I was losing the will to live so bought it anyway out of desperation. )
I have since tried on this www.johnlewis.com/miss-selfridge-embellished-angle-sleeve-dress-ivory/p2743539?&DPSLogout=true&_requestid=18501708 and I quite like it I think. But I have no idea if it's okay as a wedding guest outfit. Plus I have no idea what I could wear over the top should it be chilly ( wedding is at the end of the month ) or what colour heels to get.
I can post a ( headless ) pic of me in it tomorrow should that help or am I barking up the wrong tree entirely? Last wedding I went to was about 3 years ago so have no concept of good outfit/bad outfit.

That second dress is lovely, I think that would be great for a wedding.

I'd go for heels similar to what the model has on, strappy nude or maybe metallic heels. It's hard to tell the tone of the beads, are they silvery or more black?

As for a cover up, I think a wrap type shawl would look nice, a cardi or jacket won't sit well over it with those sleeves. You could always brave it, I'm sure it won't be that cold.

Thank you - the beads are sort of pewter you and light black if that makes sense. I have another dress ordered that I'm picking up later so I may be brave and post some pics for comparison.
Any ideas what type of shawl/wrap thing I could get...agree that a cardi/jacket wouldn't work.

Pewter you? Pewtery.... Not that that is even a proper word but there you go...

I don't mean to offend but those dresses aren't very wedding like. I find them very drab and cheap like material. 2ND dress so over priced for what it is. The material of both would cling to your belly where u want to skim over it. The oasis dress is right for season and skims belly and shows arms and legs beautifully.

Thanks for your thoughts 3 ... The main problem with dresses like the oasis one is the length. The midi length just doesn't do anything for me at all. I'll try to post some pics later on this evening of both.
If it's at all relevant it's not a church wedding but I appreciate you're not a fan of either choice Grin

I like them both, especially the John Lewis one, you can jazz it up with bling jewellery and great shoes, bag, jacket, etc. I think hot pink always looks nice with navy or go restrained chic with mainly navy + white/cream.

Thanks Black I really liked the top of the navy one but the length and would have put up with the ruffle if the length was right! Tricky customer right here Smile

Have you thought about trying a two piece set? Mix and matching a midi skirt and top?

Report
bobkate · 06/07/2016 18:01

I had thought about a skirt and a top but to be honest that feels like I'd have to start searching all over again and not sure I can face that.
Can you have a look at these 3 pics and say yay/nay/you need to start all over again...
First is the John Lewis navy ruffle, linked about. 2nd the Miss Selfridge one and 3rd is actually navy and from Next.
I think the 2nd Oasis one you linked to 3 would suit me better than the first So may have to trudge back to the shops to try it on if the consensus is I need to start all over again....

First one too long. Second one too short. I like the theirs one. Fits well looks glamorous and is a nice length.

Third not theirs.

Agree with bluesky - the lengths of 1 & 2 aren't right, but 3 looks lovely in every respect.

If you really love the 1st, could you get it taken up a bit?

Thank you.- I think if I went with that I could get some bright heels/bag but that's a whole new search. I think I'm leaning towards the 3rd although it's the most clingy around the tummy. Wondering if there's such a thing as strapless control undies...off to google those too.

Thanks Brankolium...I don't think, due to the ruffle and the split, the first could be taken up that easily and I prefer the third anyway - only picked it up today.

Don't like the navy ruffle one. It looks like a work dress with a frill stuck on it.

LOVE the second one on you, but don't think it's terribly weddingy, unless you were just going to the evening bit. A wrap or shawl would look silly over it, I think. I'd be more inclined to put a grey jacket over it for when outside and then take it off immediately indoors to show off the sleeves. It's far too short for the daytime bit of a wedding though, I think, unless that doesn't bother you.

The third looks like a dress for a winter evening event, not for a summer wedding.

Eight Cotton and pretty but maybe a bit too mother of the bride?

Love this if you don't object to black.

Thank you - Remus the first link didn't work and I do like the black lace dress but I think black is a bit harsh on me, hence why I usually stick with navy or dark grey.
Eeeeek I miss the good old days when I had time to peruse shops and found pleasure in going shopping...this just feels like such a chore Sad.
I feel most comfortable in the sequin one but it probably is a bit too short...

First link again but I don't think you'll like it! I like the weird print, but it could be a bit dowdy if the length isn't perfect.

The black one comes in khaki too, but I feel khaki is more for casual wear. That might be me being an idiot though!

I love the third one :) and you have a beautiful figure I can't see no tummy :)

I love these from Warehouse. I'm 5ft4 and the length shouldn't work on me but it does. Fantastic colours too Smile

Second one is great IMO unless a super traditional posh wedding. You have the legs for it which is important Grin

How old are you if you don't mind me asking?

I love the second one!
